I recently came to Kennedy Theater (KT) for my niece's white coat ceremony, which was postponed due to COVID. For those who are unaware, a white coat ceremony is a ritual where some schools of medicine and other health related fields that marks the student's transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences. I had no idea what this was all about until 5 years ago where I worked at a lei shop. I recall families would order flowers for this special occasion locally or to send to the mainland to celebrate the white coat ceremony. Built and opened in December 1963, KT is located on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus. The venue seats about 600 people and hosts various events showcasing the university's performing arts. Each student was allotted entrance tickets and parking passes for the ceremony, and I was fortunate and honored for the invite. Although KT is over 50 years old, the structure and interior are still in good shape as it's well kept. Just like any other venue, restrooms are on the ground floor and on both sides are stairwells to lead you to the theater. There were ushers from the entrance to greet you, to ensure you had a covered face mask, to receive your entrance ticket and to pass out the event's program. At that time, we were advised restrooms are only on the ground floor and then to proceed up the stairs. On the second level the usher guided us to our seats where tape was placed between every other seat for social distancing. The interior could use a face lift, but it did have character. The AC seemed on an intermittent schedule as it was warm and cool throughout this 2-hour ceremony. We sat in the middle of the theater and had no issue with the acoustics throughout the ceremony. KT is currently still enforcing covered face masks for entry. Prior to entry there were hand sanitizer and disposable face masks. To be frank, I was shocked to have witnessed families/friends who showed up to this white coat ceremony without a mask. With regards to parking, KT has a designated parking lot adjacent to this structure, as well as street parking. Overall, a very positive first experience at KT. I can envision attending a performance here. I enjoy the performing arts and this venue suits very well. read more

Kabuki in Hawaii 2019, held here from March 2-8. Got to see the 1st performance here. I haven't been to Kennedy since my college days. Seems the venue looks the same, maybe time for a renovate. The Kabuki was last performed here in Hawaii in 1966, what a honor to see Japanese centuries old culture. The first hour was an introduction to the Kabuki performance and meaning of the music. Totally educational. 2nd half was the performance which had authentic set they use in Japan. Elaborate costumes and Kimono as well as musical instruments were awesome! This was well run by staff and performers. Well worth the price of a ticket. read more

It was my second time at the John F. Kennedy Theatre at U.H. Manoa. I came to a night showing of a program a few years ago. After finding A Midsummer Night's Bollywood Dream was showing from my Bollywood mo'ai, we decided to see it as a group together. I was ecstatic after knowing there were a few seats left for their last showing of this program. I purchased my tickets from the U.H. Manoa website for a 2pm matinee show. At the time I purchased my tickets, there were no assigned seating and the price was $25 per ticket at will call at the box office at U.H. However, purchasing tickets in advance, were cheaper for adults at $16 (6 months purchased in advance). Throwback Saturday's mainstage tickets are available at discount prices (shown only certain Saturday's) and discounted for students. Prices on program tickets vary by production. $25 per ticket is worth it for fresh talents and supporting students. The Kennedy Theatre is home to the universities theatre and dance programs but also welcomes guest artists as well. My favorite thus far is A Midsummer Night's Bollywood Dream incorporating both eastern to western touch of Bollywood choreography and millennial banter to the story with the main foundation from Shakespeare. The set was creative, gorgeous with ensembles bright and colorful and an interactive cast. The program was approximately 3 hours with a 10-15 minute intermission. After picking up my tickets at Will Call (according to last names first), I waited in line to get into the theatre. Seating is 30 minutes prior to showing and unassigned. Entry to the mainstage is available on the second floor or the first floor depending on where you want to sit. The theatre was built in 1963 and the smell from its time still lingers in the seats, floors and wood. The mainstage theatre seats 620 with shallow graduating seat elevations (no balcony). If you're short like me, I would get a corner seat, or sit on the third to the front row. Bring a shawl or a sweater to snuggle in. No photography or videography allowed during the show and no late attendees will be allowed entry until intermission. Snacks are on sale during intermissions but can't be brought inside the theatre. Bathrooms are located on the first floor only. Women's lines can get lengthy between intermissions or after the show. Since I attended on a Sunday during the day, parking was free at the Kennedy Theatre parking lot behind the building. Otherwise, it's $6 to park on campus on a weekday and Saturday. Sunday In The Park With George: Yet another outstanding performance @ KT. I am not an art enthusiast, but I do know of certain works. I have seen George Seurat's painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island La Grande Jatte", however, I knew nothing else. This performance gave insight in respect to the artist and his works of art. I highly recommend my fellow Yelpers to attend one, if not all, the performances held at KT. Parking at UH: $6 entry onto campus, entered from either Dole St. or Maile Way. Parking is allowed anywhere on the weekend, including "reserved 24 hrs" spaces directly across the street.There is a parking lot behind the theatre and a small one located across the street, off to the side. Restrooms: One set located just inside the main entrance. Ladies, there are 7 stalls and usually 100 women needing the facilities during the 10-15 minute intermission. (You do the math) There is a water fountain just oitside the ladies room and another one upstairs if you get thirsty. No food allowed in the Theatre. Stadium seating. The theatre itself is great since the seats are elevated enough that even if a tall person sat in front of you, you'll still be able to see. The thing I don't like about this theatre is the parking. After spending most of 2 years living in this theater, I have quite a bond with it. This theater's performances are almost all done by students, with the exceptions of guest performances and directorial and design work. Since it is students doing the work, no one is getting paid so everyone wants to be there. The building itself is quite nice compared to other theaters. It is all air conditioned. It has padded seats, restrooms, water fountains and is very handicap accessible with ramps and an elevator. There is no bad seat in this theater since it is not the biggest. They sell snacks and beverages on the upper lanai during intermission. If it is a children's show, the actors come outside and greet people after the show. Tickets range in price from $12 to $27 and can be bought online or in person at the box office. Go support the arts at this great theater. You will more than likely enjoy the experience. read more

If you have never been to UH, question is, where is this Kennedy Theatre? On my way to meet my friends for a play, not sure where it is, I figured I'd wander the UH area, I'm sure to find it. I make the first right turn as I am coming up University Ave. once I see the campus and the immediate right because it looked as though there was something going on there. I asked the guy standing out in the rain if this is where the parking was for the play... He replied; oh, you want to go to Kennedy, go back on this street and make it left at the second light. --easy directions. There was a long line getting in because parking was $6. The lots were in the back of the theatre, so the walk up was not very pleasant in heels. The theatre itself is well maintained. Seat weren't that comfortable. And for some reason, the air conditioning wasn't cool enough because the outside air was cooler. During intermission, the line for the restroom was long, there isn't enough stalls for the amount of people. Overall, it is a nice theatre. read more

I LOVE this theatre. It's a little old and there could be more restrooms in the lobby, but it is properly air conditioned, the stage is a great size, the sound is excellent, and every seat in the house has a good view. I've been to many productions in this theatre. I have been in productions in this theatre. I have danced on the stage and changed the lights and once, many years ago in my final semester of college, I stage managed from the right wing. And one day while adjusting lights and fixing cues I turned to my left and saw him, a stranger, a handsome theatre major, the hottie with a charming smile and twinkling eyes who would later become my husband. Yes. I love this theatre. We love this theatre. As a theatre major and a dance major it was our home, as lovers it was our late nights and secret spots, and as husband and wife it is our precious past. After not stepping foot in Kennedy theatre for at least 8 years I brought my 6-year-old daughter to a dance performance a week ago and took great delight in pointing out where I met daddy, and where mommy used to write, um, HELP write daddy's papers while he slept, and where we used to eat and sit, and where in the parking lot I would wait for him to finish rehearsals. The theatre smells the same. To me it smells like a thousand little memories and makes me want to cry. I know we are not the only ones in love with this theatre. Go to the shows, watch the students perform their hearts out, support this place that is wonderful and living and so very dear to so many hearts. And if you are a young one starting out at UHM and you are considering theatre or dance, know that you will grow close to this theatre too. It can be a magical place. read more

I recently went here for the Asian-Pacific Dance Festival, very good concert showcasing traditional and contemporary dance forms. I came to this theatre a couple other times watching shows. It has a very nice and homey atmosphere. There are conveniently located restrooms are soon as you enter the doors of the place. Left side for guys and right side for girls. There's a box office to purchase tickets on the day of the event. If you are a student, you always will get discounted prices. Parking is not so bad. There are a few handi-cap stalls right in front of the theatre and next to Jefferson hall across the street. There's also more parking in the back of the theatre. The front managers were sooo accomadating and kind. I took my grandmother recently to watch dr. Seuss, we were treated amazingly special! The performance was great, kids loved it and seating is good. We found parking easily and the outside wait area to good for kids. Highly recommend. read more

i am a born and bred Brit now living in Hawaii and have to say how much I enjoyed along with my husband(both seniors) the adaption of "Blythe Spirit"currently playing .i found the acting ,stage presence,pronunciation of the English language and accents really quite impressive .Every one involved in the production should give themselves a pat on the back .We enjoyed it so much that we are hoping to come again to the Sunday matinee and bring my brother who is here visiting from England .
