However, there is one employee (a male with long-ish wavy hair, likely in his mid-30s) who clearly knows his products but often delivers suggestions in a tone that comes across as condescending and judgmental. Diamond Lake is so Diamond Like. Came here for Ace Wrap. Or a copy of Ace Ventura Pet Detective. THEY DIDN'T HAVE EITHER ONE. FALSE ADVERTISING. Pretty awesome hardware store with great prices on the corner, in the tiny Minnehaha Plaza, in a residential neighborhood in South Minneapolis. Not only are they full of the right stuff, and family owned but they really care about the neighborhood. I was parked in front Diamond Lake Ace, when I came back there was a note on my car saying, "come into the hardware store and ask for Dave". I figured I had parked in a bad place, and I was willing to hear about it. When I got into the store Dave told me that my car was the victim of a hit and run. He had loaded an email with three pictures of the damages to both cars, a video of the car pulling in, and the sound of a crash. He directed me to fill in my email address and he'd send it to me. Best selection of live bait you'll find in south Minneapolis. In fact it may be the only one. Anywho, any time I've come in for minnows or just to snag some other fishing gear, the staff has always been extremely friendly. I grew up with a small-town bait shop. Pictures on the wall of local catches. Relaxed and always wishing you luck. You'll get that here. Didn't rate five stars because I've never purchased anything other than bait or fishing gear, but the store has a neighborhood feel but appears large enough to start and finish most projects. read more

As I am living so close to Ace, I often find things to buy (if you know what I mean). This Ace reminds me of where I grew up. Like a small town, the staff recognizes you when you come back. They are always willing to help...and for a long time if need be. Everyone seems to know everything! They won't try to 'sell' you on anything, but sell you the right thing for you. I have even been told they do not have the right thing for me, go to 'fill in corporate hardware store here'. (They also have a clearance bin in case you are itching to buy a tool(s) for no particular reason.) I hope to stay in this part of town for a while. As we've been in the middle of our 734th house project, these guys always seem to have the know-how in order to help - and if they don't know or have the piece I'm looking for, they tell me where to go. Diamond Lake Hardware has simple solution to fix snowblowers for under $5 I have an old Toro snowblower that decided I needed to do more shoveling. Maybe it thought it would be good for my health or just get a workout for a change. I tried to pull start the beast maybe 50 times. It really wrenched my back, which made shoveling for the next hour painful. Next time it snowed I was faced with a dilemma. Should I try and start the blower or give up and just shovel to avoid the extra pain. Instead, I decided to rebuild the carburetor again. Only this time I went to an auto parts store and bought cans of carb cleaner and starting fluid. They didn't have the right sparkplug, so I went to Diamond Lake Hardware. As usual, someone came right up to me to see if I needed help. It was the owner Dave. I told him about the carburetor rebuild and the cleaning fluid, and I just needed a new spark plug. He said, "Naw, that's not your problem." We walked down an aisle and he stopped by small engine products. "You probably don't need to do the rebuild if the snowblower has been sitting around since last year. Just drain out the old gas, put in some new, and add some of this to the gas." He held up a small bottle of wonder fluid. "Works every time." So, I had spent about $15 on stuff to make it go and here was this small bottle that cost less than $5. I was committed to the project, so I bought the spark plug along with the wonder fluid. Later last night, I finished off my corner sidewalk with my smooth running snowblower. I should have gone to Diamond Lake Hardware in the beginning. I could have saved some money and 90 minutes of freezing my fingers off removing the carb, cleaning it and putting it back together. The wonder fluid does have a commercial name, but I'm so grateful to Diamond Lake Hardware that I'm just going to give you their phone number so you can call and ask them for the name if your snowblower isn't running. I ADORE this hardware store! The employees are so friendly and helpful AND they welcome dogs! I went in last weekend with a list of no less than 20 items. I was immediately greeted by a man who helped me find every last thing on my list, gave me good painting and product advice, and called another store and arranged for a pick-up when Diamond Lake was out of an item I needed. AMAZING!! I've always loved this hardware store but today they really went above and beyond for me. I went in lugging an infant and jogging stroller and they were there immediately to get the door for me and ask what I needed help with. All I needed were the right screws to get the car seat attachment onto the stroller and not only did they find them for me, the guy helping me took the stroller and got the whole thing installed for me!! All for the $1.30 it cost me in hardware. Of course I found another thing to buy so I could help support them but I knew I wouldn't have gotten any slack if I wouldn't have either. This neighborhood hardware store is as outstanding as it gets. Countless problems solved, always - always willing to take the time to help you out and get it right. The latest, the team at DLH was able to recreate a thick, arched/rounded piece of glass that had cracked in a door that was over 100 years old. They took the time to spec it out and carve the arch by hand. The piece fit in the door the first try! Amazing craftsmanship at a fair price, this hardware store is a real gem and we are lucky to have it in the neighborhood. read more

Spring has finally arrived!!! Today I turned on the outside faucet and discovered over the long winter I have developed a leaky shut off valve bleeder cap. Sigh. It's always something! So I turned the water back off, removed the bleeder cap and see that the uber-tiny washer is looking kind of sad. Ok. Amazon? Nope - for sure I wouldn't manage to order the right size, I need to SEE the replacement cap with my own eyes to feel comfortable that it's a good replacement option. Nearest Home Depot? Nope - no one will be there to help me find it *IF* they even have it. Diamond Lake Hardware? You bet!! Only 5 minute drive, they will for sure have someone to help me. I brought the cap, showed it to the fellow at the service counter. He immediately went to a small bin, nope not going to work. Went to another, nope. A third. Hum. None are the right size. So we went to the actual shut-off valves figuring maybe we could find a replacement on one of them. All were too small. So he went to the washers and found the perfect size that would fit inside, and said to ADD the new one to the existing one and see if that worked, and by the way, no charge! Wow, when is the last time THAT happened? I headed home, stacked the two washers, threaded the cap back on, turned the water back on and low-and-behold, no dripping! This place is the best. The fellow found they didn't have exactly what I needed, but he took the time to "MacGyver" a fix, and at no charge. I used to only go there when I thought I may have needed to actually talk to someone for assistance. Then I started going there because I was confident they would have what I needed. Now I just go there because they are the best, and because I would miss them if they closed, and because small businesses need me more than big-box or Amazon ever will. I'd give them 11 stars if Yelp offered it. Staff it fantastic. Owner (Dave) is very "hands-on" with the business and wants people to be happy with his store. He's great to work with. read more

Today, they get a DOUBLE ROUND OF APPLAUSE-- It is Dec .17 and we just got big snowfall. I had errand on Nicollet, near their Diamond Lk store. I parked on Nicollet, few doors down, did my errand, and returned to my car. Alas, could not back out, car stuck in a snow rut. Went to Settergrens for help. Two of their guys came out to help me- after a few unsuccessful tries, another of their guys pulled up with his truck and finally got me out. They saved the day, and seemd happy to do so. My outdoor faucet started leaking. I went to HomeDepot, but they did not even offer looking for replacement gaskets. So I cycled to Diamond Lake Hardware Shop and they had a lot of replacement gaskets assortment and a gentleman who works there picked right gaskets and lubricated for me. The BEST hardware store in town. I have no skill at repairing items and they are patient enough to teach me step-by-step. Also, I have brought more items in than I can count for them to repair. They will cut wood, repair furniture, repair electrical items, etc.. The last thing I brought in was a 40 year old Champion Juicer. The only thing wrong was the electrical cord. They were able to repair the cord and I only spent $7. read more

I am so impressed with this Ace Hardware location. A few days ago my car overheated right around the corner from the store. I realized that I was low on antifreeze so I went in to see if they sold it. Right away I was greeted by Mike and he asked me how he could help me. I explained the situation and he helped me locate the antifreeze. He could sense my nervousness and offered to help me put it in my car. He spent a large chunk of time helping me with my car and offering advice. I was so appreciative!
