3 consoles w/6 spindly legs, only usable against a wall. We needed a corner unit.
    J S C.

Joe's handyman fu is strong! Trusted, clever, responsive, hard working, tidy, and fair. Did I mention friendly and careful? Joe is thorough in assessment of each job so there will be few-to-no surprises as he digs into the work. He won't commit to what he can't do or finish. No work is left undone. Among many things, he has: replaced sinks, assembled furniture, repaired antique furniture, installed quake ties for heavy furniture, handicap aids for post-surgery, hung items on walls, even repairing more than one defective item w/ingenius solutions so they need not be returned. He fixed the derailing medicine-drawer-from-hell that we can't believe we spent decades putting up with because we were sure it couldn't be fixed without deconstructing the built-in cabinet. It was no problem for Joe. He also heroically installed a bulky commercial kitchen faucet in my textile craft room that seemed utterly impossible because the deep sink was set too close to the wall, but he wrangled the plumbing in there lickety-split, having exactly the right specialty tool in his truck. Now, it's our favorite sink in the house. Like I said, strong fu! My next to-do list for him is nearly long enough for another call. Joe was also game to implement a crazy idea. I always dreamed of glass front banker/lawyer's bookshelves to house our many treasured volumes, as well as, our vinyl collection and other media. Unfortunately, old-school glass front bookshelves are not the right size for modern entertainment components or vinyl records, and even if they were they're ungodly expensive. We asked Joe to make a large glass front bookcase out of TV consoles, and put them on wheels, and still have them support 800 lbs! Joe was skeptical but intrigued and, finding the consoles to be solid wood and large weight-bearing casters numerous, agreed to take up the challenge. He made it work better than we envisioned with suggestions that improved the design at less cost. They are crazy sturdy with all the reinforcements. The back has 2 waist-high mounted power strips in easy reach for powering off when out of town. Plugging anything in or out is no longer a back-wrenching misery groping blind behind an immovable armoire. Everyone who sees them is so jealous of our dust-free book and media cases! To break it down solid-wood bankers' bookshelves modified to work would have been $20,000. No chance. I thought I was going to have to settle for another set of ugly, disposable shelving that couldn't stand up to the job and be bummed every time I looked at them. In the end, the cost of 3 consoles + Joe's elbow grease brought the whole project in at $2,000 with no laminate, vaneer, or garbage particle board, and lower than the cost of Ikea! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Joe!

Joey went on to build a beautiful gate to our backyard. As with other jobs at our place, he selected the best materials and finished the gate with wonderful craftsmanship.

    Replaced the kitchen faucet

First time to hire Joe, I spoke with him on the phone about my kitchen faucet problem. He was easy to communicate and understood what the problem was right away. His quote was reasonable. He is definitely a good professional, was very friendly and thorough. He got the job done well and clean. I would totally hire him again.

Before, the table lost four screws and fell down, throwing off lamp

Highly recommended. The oak table breakdown is now fixed by Joe Diaz. He came the day after I sent the picture and set to work. I feared the table might be a goner since this was not the first breakdown and repairs were not holding. In short, I am very happy to have discovered DIAZ HANDYMAN SERVICE, -- the previous efforts to repair did not get to the base of the table's problem which is now solved, I am confident. He brings all sorts of tools and repair things including much better screws to replace the very old outdated screws that were part of the problem. I asked him about a water damage issue I have been ignoring and learned a lot about possible options, from major expense to minimum to halt the damage. He Is a licensed contractor, so that takes in a lot of fixes. And reasonably priced. A congenial, and I believe a trustworthy problem solving professional. I feel lucky to have been given his name by my son who saw his many good reviews.

Joe helped me renovate my rental unit and did great work. He over delivered on timing, repeatedly finishing things in less time than quoted. He automatically fixed things he found that I hadnt discovered. He worked well around the painters, floor installers, and countertop installers, making me feel someone besides me was keeping an eye on the big picture. Everything was done very professionally with great attention to detail. He knows how to do many many things and is a pleasure to be around. His fees are more than reasonable for the quality of work he does. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Diaz installed the 240V outlet and the duct work in the wall.

I reached out to get some cat wall furniture hung up (shelves, steps, and other things for the cat to jump and climb on), and it was super easy to get a quote and schedule a time. I imagine it's a somewhat small job for him compared to some of the reviews I saw here, but it's something I didn't have the skills to do myself, and I appreciated him taking it on. I will definitely be reaching out again in the future! It's such a relief to have someone I can rely on to take care of these things. He was professional, quick, and I am so happy seeing the shelves up (and knowing they're secure). Ted has one more fan in our email list!

This is going to be long, but it needs to be, because the experience unfolded slowly and then all…read moreat once. I hired Ted because he seemed professional at first: reasonable quote (not the cheapest), clear scope of work, and a stated one-year warranty. I waited about a week for him to come out. The first red flag was timing. He said he'd arrive between 9:30 and 10:30. At 9:50 he texted that he was "wrapping up his morning job" and needed to get fuel, with no ETA. He arrived at 11. When he came in, he put foot covers on his shoes -- and then immediately stepped outside and back into my house, tracking dirt onto my carpet. He didn't have enough material to protect the floors where he'd be working, so I laid down plastic myself. He didn't seem particularly concerned about keeping the space clean. As the work began, things went downhill quickly. Ted started cutting into my walls and ceiling far more than expected. What should have been a relatively contained wiring job turned into multiple drywall openings -- including a long, thin strip cut from the power box toward the bathroom. As I write this, I have a drywall professional repairing all of these cuts. Once I realized how much drywall he was removing, I asked him to stop cutting and to check with me before making any more openings. I also asked how much he would charge to repair the drywall. He responded defensively, saying, "I didn't agree to that -- check your texts," as if I were asking him to fix it for free. He even threatened to leave. I clarified several times that I was simply asking for a quote. He never gave one, and instead just continued working. The long strip he cut was supposedly needed to run a new power wire. Ted initially insisted the wire would need to run under the ceiling joists -- essentially beneath the drywall -- and that I'd "just mud and tape it." I've done enough drywall work myself to know that this is incorrect. I used a flashlight to show him existing wiring running properly over the joists. He eventually conceded that it might be possible. Later, he called me to say he'd need to extend the strip further because he didn't have a straight pole to fish the wire. I paused, thought about it, and realized I owned steel fish tape -- the correct tool for exactly this purpose. When I showed it to him, he glanced at it and said, dismissively, "That's for conduit," and turned away. I explained that fish tape is used for precisely this situation. He repeated, "It's for conduit," several times. When I tried to demonstrate its flexibility, he raised his voice and said, "Look, I don't want to get lectured, okay?" At that point, I had to tell him not to raise his voice at me in my own home. Eventually I suggested he just try the tool, and if he needed help I'd assist. He asked if we could "do it together," which struck me as odd. I declined. Later, I found the wire successfully run over the joists -- using the fish tape. After calling me again about needing yet another cut, I asked him to leave. By that point, the house was extremely dirty. Drywall dust was everywhere, and the carpet was full of debris. Ted insisted on vacuuming before leaving, despite the job being unfinished and the walls and ceiling being full of holes. I told him it was fine and that he could go. He kept insisting. At one point I looked down and noticed he was standing on my carpet without foot covers, after removing the plastic I'd put down. I finally had to tell him to leave very directly. The next day, a licensed electrician came to finish and clean up the work. He installed the remaining fan with zero additional cuts except for the one required to vent it outside -- not the cuts Ted said were necessary. We actually laughed together at how bad the previous work was. He also confirmed that the new circuit Ted had run was unnecessary. After checking the fan's power requirements, he simply removed the cable Ted installed and powered the fan from the existing circuit. I'm now having him come back later this week to fix a mistake Ted made on the fan he did install. One final detail: Ted left for about two and a half hours mid-job, and when he returned, he immediately smoked a cigarette in front of my house. I'm honestly baffled by how this person has positive reviews. I regret hiring him, waiting for him, and not ending the job sooner. Ted started out sounding professional, but that professionalism did not extend to his workmanship, communication, or conduct in my home. Edit: I see this guy replied to my review! I'm disappointed to see this response mischaracterizes both my expectations and my conduct. At no point did I ask for free drywall repair, nor did I yell at or curse at anyone. The core facts remain unchanged: unnecessary drywall cuts were made, the work was left unfinished, and a licensed electrician later confirmed much of the work was unnecessary and corrected it. I've shared my experience so others can make an informed decision.

After hiring Jamyang (Karma Handy) again to finish a remodeling project a dishonest, licensed contractor had messed up and then abandoned, I feel I have no choice but to update my review. Based on our history, I thought I could trust him but it turned out I could not. He was asked to install a bathroom vanity, mirror, light fixture and wall cabinet, redo a wall heater installation, and finish the new kitchen (cabinets, countertop, stove and dishwasher). While some things were done well (vanity, mirror, cabinet doors), he made so many mistakes and errors in judgement, I was beyond frustrated. (All this while he kept bugging me to write him a good review on his new webpage.) *New bathroom cabinet was positioned so the door hit the wall, multiple drill holes through the back, mismatched hardware... it looked terrible. *Free standing range: Told me to throw out parts that were required per mfgr. (and code) when he had no idea what they were for. Never read manual. *Countertop: Had the slab cut into two pieces, rather than a single piece with a cutout for the stove, leaving a 4" gap between it and the wall. He insisted the stove didn't fit and didn't understand that built-ins and free-standing units have different installation requirements. Widened the piece that went alongside the wall, against specs and requiring new filler/trim. *Ordered unnecessary materials *Positioned dishwasher crooked and too high and couldn't find the mfgr's. mounting brackets (they were in a bag inside the appliance, along with the instructions). Trim around it was sloppy and uneven. The list goes on... like leaving garbage and uneaten food on site, unable to reinstall cabinet hinges (I ultimately had to do that myself), rings of adhesive in the sink, installing a new light switch "upside down", incomplete caulking, mis-assembling the roll-out drawer, leaving pencil marks on the wall, and more. The last nails in the coffin came when after several weeks, we finally scheduled a day for him to come back to fix his mistakes, he showed up late, said he was only there to "talk about the work" (I'd sent an email with a complete list but he "doesn't read email"), and to my surprise, abruptly left saying he'd be back the next day. This wasted not only the day I'd cleared for him, but meant I had to clear the next day's schedule as well. He did return, and with a sour and argumentative attitude. He presented me with a bill that included old receipts I could not decipher, including purchases for another client (deducted after I noticed it). I wrote him a check for the full amount, but felt taken advantage of and immediately stopped payment so I could process what had just happened. It took a while but I documented what I felt were the biggest problems. I consulted professionals, highly-skilled carpenters and they all said that fixing mistakes was his responsibility (Jamyang charged me full price for fixing his errors). (Reminded me of the time I asked him to replace an outdoor light sensor with a motion sensor. Unsuccessful after many hours of trying to figure it out, I ordered a half-dozen other units based on his recommendation. He spent hours trying with a couple of them, but left the rest unopened. So much time had passed by this point that I couldn't return them for refunds.) The ultimate insult came when he assured me - promised, in fact, to swing by and assess the compatibility of a range hood vent that had a very short window for return. He said "tell me when it arrives and I promise I will come that day". (I'd asked him to look at the specs earlier but he couldn't figure them out.) When the day came. he didn't reply to my texts for two days and ultimate said, bluntly, "I'm not available". That alone cost me over $350 dollars. Ultimately, I put a list together with detailed explanations for the deductions I was taking. It was a lot of work that I did not enjoy, and I reduced the amounts deducted several times. When he showed up for his new check, I showed him the document I'd prepared with the details and that he could have someone read it to him or I could summarize it for him. He thought I wasn't going to pay him at all, which might have been appropriate but is not my style. He refused to take the letter with him and left with a snide remark. After all this, I will never recommend, hire or trust him again. He was arrogant, unreliable, disrespectful and made numerous amateur mistakes. He didn't listen or follow/read instructions. This job was clearly over his head. His customer service skills desperately need attention. I was surprised, disappointed and left with a slew of regrets and a whole new mess to fix. I hate having to do this. Moving forward. Caveat emptor.
