Photosprouts provides their own mirrorless cameras and lenses for these workshops but you can bring your own as well. I brought my own and Jordi helped a ton with helping set it up and answered tons of my questions about when to use various features. The class structure is a mix of lectures and immediate hands-on exercises. The photowalks during the intermediate sessions were especially useful for applying manual settings to real-world scenes and learning how to compose shots on the fly. Getting that direct practice with my own gear was the biggest takeaway and I walked away with a much better handle on my camera. Highly recommend PhotoSprouts and I plan to take some of the more advanced workshops in the future!

Christina is the best!…read more I first came across PhotoSprouts when I took a beginner photography lesson in 2023 with Jordi. Afterwards I followed up with questions on what the best camera to buy for a safari would be, and PhotoSprouts owner Christina went above and beyond in helping me compare and contrast the 2 models and lens I was debating. She literally wrote me an essay and I remember being blown away. Fast forward to 2025 when I bought my first real camera (the Canon mirrorless one that she'd recommended two years ago) in advance of a safari honeymoon. I took 2 private lessons with her to learn how to use it. I'm a complete beginner (ex. I barely knew how to attach the lens and adapter to the camera base). Christina is knowledgeable, warm, and patient. She suggested we go to the SF Zoo to practice shooting different animals to best recreate what the honeymoon would be like. We started off with the basics (ex. aperture, ISO, shutter speed) in the Zoo cafe. Christina was prepared with printouts, props, and example pictures which helped me grasp the concepts faster. After we went through the 101 printout, we walked around the zoo to put the concepts in action. It was so helpful to have her next to me so I could ask her all my questions as they came up in real-time. For example, she pointed out that I had a tendency to over-expose my shots (because they looked dark on the LCD and viewfinder when we were out in the sun) and that I could be more aggressive when pressing + holding down the shutter release button. I also only had one battery which died within an hour, and she kindly lent me another for the remainder of class. I was amazed by how much I learned in the 2 hour lesson and took a follow-up lesson on how to import, store, and edit photos. Thank you Christina for the amazing classes and tips!

At first I tried looking up photography blogs online and tutorials on YouTube. While I found a lot of helpful tips, I ultimately felt like I needed to set aside a dedicated chunk of time and attention to learning the basics. One quick "photography class" search on Groupon, and a cross-check of Yelp reviews for this studio later, and I had a voucher for two beginner classes and/or photo walks for $142.40 (the usual price is $178, which is still a steal, but Groupon usually has some sort of 20/25% off promotional code floating around). It was easy enough to book the beginner class because they offered at least one each week, usually on Saturday or Sunday morning. I chose a Saturday morning session, 10 am to 1 pm, at their studio in the Mission. For some reason 3 hours seemed like a long period of time on paper, but the actual class just flew by. Darrell was our instructor and he walked us through shutter speed, aperture, ISO and some composition tips, all while fielding questions specific to the different cameras everyone brought in - very helpful! He also gave some suggestions on starter equipment with reasonable price ranges (i.e. prime lenses, tripod, circular lenses, etc.). It was a bit harder to book the photo walk since those only seem to come around once per month, but it's not impossible. In late November, I was able to book a Sunday evening session, 3:30 to 5:30 PM, in early December. You start off at the Warming Hut Cafe near Crissy Field, make your way up to a lookout point with a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge, and then head up close to Fort Point with views of the Golden Gate and the SF skyline at dusk. Darrell was our guide on this excursion and we had a chance to play around with f-stops, depth of field, white balance, histograms and metering. After we wrapped up our class, I decided to head off to Farmhouse Thai for dinner with coworkers and then Salt & Straw for dessert (can't waste any trips into SF if you live in the East Bay), lol. All in all, I credit Isla Studio with helping me feel more confident in manual mode - no more auto for me!

Our instructor (Lindsay) was incredibly patient, thorough, and taught us not just the basics of photography itself, but also how to operate our own cameras (and iPhones, for those who needed it). I wouldn't return if it wasn't any good. Assemblage (say it with a French accent to impress your friends) is, simply put, an art form where found objects, everyday articles and whatever you got are glued or screwed together to make freestanding sculptures or wall hangings. James' class is very low key and freeform. It's actually more of a guided workshop than a structured class. James brings in huge bins of junk, debris and discarded materials which might consist of doll heads, driftwood, electric appliance parts, photographs, toys, old telephones and what-the-heck-are-these-things. James supplies tools and glues. Many students bring materials from home. Then the students take the materials and put them together to complete their own masterpieces. There's a lot of "networking" that goes on between the students. It's fun to go around to the different work tables to see what the others are doing, and many times we offer suggestions or take advice from each other. I've stolen some of my best ideas from other students. James is very low key and non-judgemental but he has a subtle way of guidance that is always helpful and inspiring. He is a master of tools and adhesives, and he is a great problem solver when it comes to assembling art where a student is unable to figure out how to put something together or needs another eye to see what works best in the way of balance, color, etc. Besides being knowledgeable in the utilitarian side of things, James is an accomplished artist with a very strong vision of his own that is not forced on anyone else. On top of that he's a very likeable man. If you are looking for a very structured class with a teacher who has a definite agenda and a syllabus, I wouldn't recommend this class. If you're looking for a class that is freeform but has a steady mentor who is there if he is needed but is savvy enough to know when to stand back and let your creativity flow, then this is the one for you.

CCSF Fort Mason campus has changed my life... even that is an understatement…read more I first found out there was an art campus at Fort Mason from getting a CCSF flyer in the mail. Months later, I went to their annual holiday sale to see just what kind of art was being made there. The depth and variety is amazing to me given how, all things considered, the building is kind of small. City College only takes up two floors of building B. Painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture... it's all there. I'm one of those people that resorts to drawing symbols of stick figures when asked to draw a human. Now that I've been taking classes here, I can actually draw a person to their likeness. One of the best things about the Fort Mason campus is the incredible diversity it attracts in students. Obviously there is a lot of ethnic diversity, but it's the age diversity that is such a joy. I've literally had classmates ranging from 18 to 94. The range of ages adds so much to the classroom's energy. Everyone is there because they want to be there and they're all at different stages in their life. All this life experience elevates the work and it's inspiring for everyone working there. The teachers are great too. They make it such a pleasant, encouraging, and supportive environment. I was kind of intimidated when I took my first class. I had flashbacks to grade school and was worried I'd be the only one that didn't already know how to draw at least a little bit. My worry was for nothing. If you are thinking about taking a class here, do it!

If you are in search of a wedding photographer, look no further - Augie is your person! Augie was recommended to us by our venue (Casa Real) and from our first call we knew that we wanted to work with him. During our engagement shoot, Augie brought great energy and made both of us feel completely at ease. Neither of us are naturally photo people, but he guided us effortlessly and helped us feel comfortable in front of the camera. And we loved our engagement photos! Augie was wonderful during our wedding day. Everything moves so fast and can feel overwhelming, but Augie was organized and efficient and kept us on schedule. He got us through what felt like endless permutations of family and group photos in record time, all while keeping things calm and stress-free. You can tell he's very experienced and knows how to navigate a busy wedding day. His candid style is exactly what we were looking for. Our photos feel authentic, emotional, and true to the moment. He also captured so many of the small, meaningful moments - like getting ready with my bridesmaids - so beautifully. Those are some of our favorite photos. He shared teaser photos with us right after our wedding, and it was such a treat to be able to see the photos so quickly and relive our day. We absolutely love our wedding photos and know we'll cherish them for the rest of our lives. We truly could not have asked for a better photographer to document our special day. Tom has a great way of breaking down concepts so they feel approachable rather than intimidating. The hands-on practice is incredibly helpful because you're not just learning the theory--you're immediately putting it into action. One of the biggest things I took away from the course was confidence. Sometimes all you need is someone knowledgeable to confirm that you're on the right track and help you understand what to work on next. This class did exactly that for me. Tom also reinforced something that seems obvious but is easy to forget: the best way to improve your photography is simply to get out and shoot. The more you practice, the more comfortable and intuitive it becomes. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone who has owned a camera for years but never moved beyond auto mode, I highly recommend this course.
