Mark is wonderful. My first tattoo was the Scottish emblem, placed on my thigh about 7 years ago and it still looks great. I am in the middle of my second tattoo - a Raven. Mark talked with me about what I wanted and I shared my thoughts and ideas. He then created the designs. When I came in for the tattoo itself, he walked me through the process before we started. Came here for a small wrist tattoo a few months ago. All I can say is I want to cry every time I look at my wrist. The artist gave me attitude before I got my tattoo and it looks like he didn't even try. It doesn't look like orchids at all, or is patchy, disfigured, and plain UGLY. I hate it. Mark is a great tattooist. He is a degreed artist and an art lover, so much so that his studio is filled with the work of local artists. Since I got my tattoo from here, his business has grown so much that he's added another chair. The place is clean, on the artier side of Genessee Street south of Washington near the galleries. Know that Mark does not take walk ins; you should make an appointment to discuss what you want. His prices are fair. Most of all he is an upstanding guy who runs a clean studio and does great custom work. I needed a touch up after my first seating and it was included for my tattoo. I really love my tattoo from Mark. We chatted for a while when he did the work on my arm; and he told me that when he opened his studio, he was trying to get approved to move into Libertyville but the village council would not approve his business permit because they didn't want a seedy element added to their town. All I can say is, "Too bad for Libertyville. Their loss is our gain." I went to Mark before he had this studio, but the experience was great. I got a recommendation from a friend for Mark, and I am glad I did. He is professional, very creative and talented. I made sure to ask him about taking the blood borne pathogens health and safety class. And he has his bachelor's degree in art! How many tattoo artists can say that? I only got a small tattoo on my foot, but I love it! He isn't cheap, but I wasn't looking for a cheap tattoo artist, I was looking for someone who would be great. What a great shop, Very friendly service upon entering the shop and you notice the size and cleanliness of the shop immediately. What really amazing his studio fill with beautiful art work from local artist. As far as pricing goes they aren't too bad cost, depending on your opinion of expensive. If you are worried about trying to get a tattoo for cheap, then this probably isn't the shop for you because amazing work isn't cheap, and honestly it would be insulting to try and get cheap work from this caliber of a shop to begin with. Mark Hoffman he was incredibly accommodating and helped custom draw something I really liked. Also flexed around my work schedule and stayed late to do my tattoo. After my first session with Mark, I swore that I wouldn't ever let anyone else work on me. I can honestly say that the quality of the work that this shop produces is top notch. Had a great non tattoo experience with this business. I was looking for some piercing information. Owner was amazingly polite explaining to me that he does not do that kind of work. He took the time to give me name and number of 'the only person he would recommend'. So nice to have such a pleasant exchange with someone who wasn't even gonna make any money from me. The studio is fun and has really neat decorations of dinosaurs, definitely should have a Jurassic Park party when the second movie comes out. Any who... Chris did my tattoo. I gave him a few pictures and ideas of what I wanted and he has great talent, the drawing for my tattoo came out perfect. He did a pretty big piece on my upper arm and it took about three hours which was perfect timing. Prices are great as well, they charge by the hour. After a consultation with them, we described what we wanted and they sat down at a design table to sketch out original art for our approval. I found this shop doing a google search. It was the only one in Waukegan, and I'm glad I went to check it out instead of going to Libertyville. Mark, the owner, greeted me when I came in, and was extremely friendly and helpful. I showed him what I wanted, he was able to draw it up perfectly, and do the piece right away for a very fair price. We talked about doing another piece in the near future. Mark and his apprentice are both very knowledgable and down to earth. Just wanted to show some love to the booth you had set up, I walked the event quite a few times in between waiting to be judged for my large black and grey piece and just wanted to say youre booth, people and art really stuck out from everyone else, instead of the artist being tucked away working on a piece,having youre artist and canvis facing everyone walking by pulled me in, it felt very personal and having the woman being tattooed representing the shop and talking with me, being able to talk to the artist and people involved in the creative process of your shop was unique and super inviting. A lot of the more abstract art reminded me a lot of the style of paper and ink drawing i do, so i felt a strong connection with the shop as a whole. Over all amazing people, and presentation. If i find my self in waukegan in the near future i'd love to stop in and see more art. Made an appointment during the wine walk, yes I was quite intoxicated however I did make a nice deposit to ensure I would return. Went 09/07/2013 half a hour ahead of time and from the moment we stepped in the door we were treated very very badly. First with the whole "didn't think you would show up" really I made a deposit why wouldn't I? He seemed to be angry that I did. So we were told to " cop a squat" Which we did and waited and waited in the mean time a young man came into the shop asking about getting a tattoo Chris the receptionist asked the "artist" If he had anytime available for another tattoo in which he responded "no because of her I am now backed up" Wow is all I could say. How is it because of me that you are now backed up. I placed a deposit and kept my appointment. We then walked over to chris and expressed our concerns and his response was ok bye. Wow didn't even bother to ask for the deposit back just wanted out of that shady establishment. We went to modern tattoo and what a completely different experience from walk in to walk out. This is the only shop I will get my tattoos done and I don't live in IL, I wait until I go on my yearly visits. I have 6 tattoos and 3 have been done by Mark the owner and those 3 are the 3 that get talked about and people are impressed by. What I love about his shop is he doesn't want to copy what someone else has done, he wants you to just come in with an idea and he goes from there. He doesn't have pictures for you to choose from and I love that. I met Mark in 2008 before he opened this shop when my husband went to get a short bus memorial tattoo for a friend that died in Iraq and when we went back to him a year later he remembered us and since then Mark has become more then just our "tattoo guy" him and his family have become our family because that is the kind of person Mark is.
