Yes, the prices reflect that you are out in the country, and everything must be trucked in, but the markup seemed reasonable. It's a great place to pick up anything that you realized that you may have forgotten or to restock on anything you may need during your stay in Shelter Cove. They really have all the essentials, which is nice and we visited here a couple times during our most recent stay in Shelter Cove. The town of Shelter Cove is a small coastal town so wherever you are staying in the area, this general store is easy to get to. As we pulled up, they had fresh vegetables and fruit for sale outside the store. We were warmly welcomed as soon as we entered the store and everyone was very friendly. The store is on the smaller side, although they were well stocked and had everything we were looking for. The store was clean and really well organized. I really liked that it was very easy to find everything that we were looking for. They have bear canister rentals as well as trail information if you are hiking the Lost Coast Trail. The Lost Coast Trail stretches about 25 miles along the coast and Shelter Cove is where people start or end this trail. People tend to come here (by car or plane since they have a small runway) to have a nice relaxing weekend on the coast or to hike the Lost Coast trail. If you are doing the latter and have forgotten anything, this is a good place to stop. They have a gift shop next door with items from many local artists and craftspeople and it's a great place to get unique souvenirs. An all around excellent general store to meet your needs while visiting the beautiful Shelter Cove area!

Hayfork Discount is in the "Frontier Village", which is a strip of buildings on the northern end of town that look mostly abandoned. (The mill closed about 15 years ago). Hayfork Discount is anchoring the busy end of the village strip..... next to the laundromat and Roping Rhonda's bar. [Oh, yeah, there are also two bars in Hayfork....] Hayfork Discount is pretty much equivalent with Wiley's. Wiley's has a few different frozen food and fresh meat choices; Hayfork Discount tends to have a little bit cheaper prices on dairy products. HD also has hard alcohol, whereas I believe Wiley's is beer-and-wine. Prices are high in Hayfork -- raising transportation costs really hit this town hard. The cashiers are friendly.

It should also be noted that in a town with very few public restrooms, Ray's is not stepping up to the plate. There were two restrooms in back, one of which is designated employees only (despite two non-employees sneaking in to use it while I waited) and the actual customer one, which includes a sign saying you have to have purchased something in store to even use it. There was someone inside so I waited in a line in a cramped back hallway for a good ten minutes wondering what in the world this person was doing inside before finally giving up and hitting a dirty gas station across the street.
