Shelter Cove General Store is conveniently located and you pass directly by it when entering the town of Shelter Cove. It's a great place to pick up anything that you realized that you may have forgotten or to restock on anything you may need during your stay in Shelter Cove. They really have all the essentials, which is nice and we visited here a couple times during our most recent stay in Shelter Cove. The town of Shelter Cove is a small coastal town so wherever you are staying in the area, this general store is easy to get to. As we pulled up, they had fresh vegetables and fruit for sale outside the store. We were warmly welcomed as soon as we entered the store and everyone was very friendly. The store is on the smaller side, although they were well stocked and had everything we were looking for. The store was clean and really well organized. I really liked that it was very easy to find everything that we were looking for. They have bear canister rentals as well as trail information if you are hiking the Lost Coast Trail. The Lost Coast Trail stretches about 25 miles along the coast and Shelter Cove is where people start or end this trail. People tend to come here (by car or plane since they have a small runway) to have a nice relaxing weekend on the coast or to hike the Lost Coast trail. If you are doing the latter and have forgotten anything, this is a good place to stop. They have a gift shop next door with items from many local artists and craftspeople and it's a great place to get unique souvenirs. We found the store to be tidy and quite well stocked with necessities. Staff was friendly. We did not need gasoline, but was pleasantly surprised that they do have older functional gas pumps - pay inside to pump type deal, no card reader, so only open during store hours. Yes, the prices reflect that you are out in the country, and everything must be trucked in, but the markup seemed reasonable. I believe they observe their hours tightly so plan ahead to get there well before closing. read more

Gave zero Fs about 4 stranded, out-of-town customers: Shelter Cove is extremely remote. The nearest place to get food or any provisions is about 1.5 hrs away along crazy windy roads. At 7:29 four cars pulled up to the only in-town store, which closes at 7:30. I was one of them, needing to get baby food and diapers for my 1-year-old. Nope. The clerk literally shut the door in our faces and left. Technically, she's in the right--7:30 is closing time. But it's also an obvious F-u to anyone who looks different or looks like they are from out of town, no matter how much they need the tiniest bit of kindness or hospitality. Shelter Cove is a beautiful place with some very harsh people. read more

There were three of us struggling to get the plug in, but Larry stepped in and got it done with ease. Not only was he super helpful, but also incredibly friendly--turning what could have been a disastrous start to our trip into a positive experience. This place is awesome. Although you should expect a mark up on prices because they have to get the items to shelter cove, they have a good selection of items and appears they keep the essentials at a reasonable price and the things you don't really need I.e. cookies a little bit more expensive. The General Store provided a range of items that you would need for your camping experience. They also sold cooked pizza, hamburgers, french fries, onion rings, soup, fish and chips, and a variety of prepared food. Two things I didn't care for: -I purchased a package of marshmallows, and when I opened the package they were melted and stuck together. I had to toss out the bag. -They had a variety of t-shirts, sweaters, and hats that promoted Shelter Cove, the t-shirts were a bit outdated, and were $25 each, I thought that was pretty steep. *What to expect, the staff was not super friendly, and the packaged food was not as fresh as it could be. But for being miles from civilization, they measured up. read more

I have long had the practice of visiting small country stores, usually seeking out local products you cannot fibd elsewhere. This charming place is tough to get to, regardless of which direction you choose, east or west being you only options. In any case, I have to say it carries everything you might need as a camper or fisherman, resident or hiker. It gas fresh produce and ATM, local meats, bulk items, and canned/jarred items galore. Yes, it has gas, too. I simply needed camping supplies and expected a high price. Some items can be pricey, like can opener, but they sell canned items that do not require it. The folks there are very helpful and light-hearted friendly. It is just fun looking around at the variety for the size of rhe place (500 sq. ft.?) on a hill. Give this mini supermarket a look-see. It's unreal to me that a place this remote offers fresh Brio Bread! Make sure you stop here before dropping into the cove. It's the best choice for everything. Fresh produce, locally grown fruits and veggies, cold drinks, friendly staff. A good place to check in before going backpacking in the King Range / Lost Coast. read more

I bought some bread and cheese for snacking. As I walked up to the cashier who was a very friendly young woman, the other was updated her register and looked at me and said " i can refuse to sell to you." I'm thinking WTF. Then she said "We have the right to refuse service" all the while the young girl continued to ring me up. I should have gotten her name, not welcoming at all. So I thanked the young woman and turned to the other and said "don't bother I won't be shopping here again". I've been to many places but have never had someone ever say that to me. Kg this is not the campground you're thinking of. They don't sell anything premade that would be the deli campground. Yes this store has everything you need and so much more except shelter Cove T-shirts. There is a gift shop next door for that. Its a shame that the kg guy didn't do proper research and gave a bad review as this is not the business that he describes as all the things he mentioned are not available here just groceries and the like read more

If you are looking for groceries in Shelter Cove, this is the place to go. They have a great selection of fruits and vegetables, especially considering we are 45 minutes from a major grocery store. Fresh cilantro, avocados, cabbage, limes. In addition, when you go up and down the isles there is a huge variety of products. This isn't like your usual grocery store that lines up four cans of the same product. Often times, you can find more of the specialty products here than at the bigger grocery store over the hill. They are doing an awesome job. It may be a little bit more expensive but it's cheaper than my time and gas driving over the hill. Plus i'll pay a little more to keep them around. After checking out the other options, this store is definitely the best place to buy groceries in Shelter Cove. They had fresh fruits and vegetables (including some organics) as well as an assortment of other groceries. They have a good selection of local and regional wines. Their prices were a bit on the expensive side, but not as expensive as the other options in town, and some things were actually close to "mainland" prices. Service was friendly. We would definitely stop here again. read more
