Biscuits and Gravy and a side of sausage

Wifey and I have eaten here LOTS of times. First things first: It's a college bar and grill. But, it's a great breakfast place. The food is almost always fantastic. Today, wifey got the peach cobbler pancakes and a half order of biscuits and gravy. I WAS going to order my usual Breakfast Pile. However, after hearing Wifey's order, I said, "Let's Just do it one more time! So, I ordered the same thing. We both got coffee and water. Service was very good. We were sitting at a table apart from most everyone else. Usually that means you'll be ignored, but our server (we didn't get a name) didn't forget us at all. That was a pleasant surprise. The peach pancakes were awesome. We had to remind them that should have whipped cream (a necessity, since it's a little dry otherwise). Our server was very happy to oblige and quickly remedied that. That made Wifey's day because the whipped cream was the "rug" that pulled the whole breakfast together. Mmmm! Overall, we will come back yet again, as it's a very good place. Great food, a little crowded. A little too tight, but well worth it.

You would be wrong if you are not expecting anything fancy from a small town in Illinois. Tacos are very delicious here! I love the fish tacos. The chicken and street tacos look very enticing too. The portion is very generous. What really amazed me is many vegetarian options on the menu. As a healthy nerd, I enjoyed the plant based chicken nuggets and on demand salad without meat. Truly put my mind at ease to have a blast in a sports bar. Last but not least, the Dirty Martini at the Dirty's, you gotta to try. It's vegan, haha, and served by friendly staff. 5 star, if you are in town, give it a try.

So you find yourself in Charleston, IL. You're most likely here because of Eastern Illinois University. When it comes to grabbing dinner close to campus, you have probably 5-7 choices, and Dirty's Bar & Grill is among the best. Don't let the name fool you, because Dirty's is more like a TGI Fridays than a seedy, hole-in-the-wall saloon. The menu features an amped-up selection of typical American bar food.. various fried appetizers, burgers, wraps, street tacos and other sandwiches. The exception being what they call a "Pile". There are about 4 different kinds, and they are basically fries topped with a protein and then covered in a sauce. If you've ever been to Springfield, IL then you've probably had a Horseshoe, and Dirty's Piles are kind of a spin of that dish. The drink menu has some speciality items on it as well which separate Dirty's nicely from the various college bars that surround it.. This makes Dirty's a great spot for parents visiting their college kids that are looking for a drink, and don't feel like having their feet stick to the floor while enjoying a $2 Natty Light.. (not saying that doesn't have it's place either..lol). We took my daughter and her boyfriend here for dinner (both EIU students), and had a very nice meal. Our server Macie was great. She was attentive, knew the menu, made solid recommendations and we wanted for nothing. The food was good, and tasted pretty much as expected. No one was blown away, but the flavors were all right there, and the food was hot and freshly prepared. I had the Chicken BLT wrap with chips. It was as good as a Chicken BLT wrap was gonna get. My wife had the Dirty's Signature Pile which featured waffle fries topped with fried chicken and Buffalo sauce. Again, pretty good. The kids had a Yum Yum burger and a Flip it & Reverse it Grilled Cheese. These two dishes might have been the way to go if/when we come back. The kids both raved about these sandwiches, and they had both had them before. Again, our selections weren't bad, but theirs looked better. I'm sure there were some healthier items on the menu, and also some items if you're vegan, or have dietary restrictions, but we stuck with what we knew - solid bar grub for fat people... lol. The kids then split a Martini Sundae, named for the glass it's served in.. and they liked it.. I didn't have any, but it did feature cookie dough wrapped in an egg roll wrapping - which looked intriguing. We've eaten at a few different spots since we've been coming down to EIU, and believe it or not, there are some pretty nice choices around campus that feature some pretty delicious food. Dirty's certainly has earned it's spot among them.

Hope with those with the dietary conditions

Hope was a rockstar! We had many folks in our party with dietary conditions, Hope double checked each ingredient and she specifically made dairy free tartar sauce! There is Hope for our Health!

Good food, great drinks. Meals are not always consistent; serving sizes seem to vary from trip to trip (I get a dinner portion Caesar salad, and sometimes it's more of a side salad for $11), and sometimes the meals are made differently. The service is usually good.

Usually this is one of the best restaurants in town. Last week we enjoyed a Friday evening at ole Dirty's. Food came out fast everything was all good, the wings were super hot fire.... This week not so much, the waitress brought out 12 traditional Bat wings when we are in the middle of a pandemic that was started by these lil mfs in the first place. I'll give them a 5/10 since its hit or miss, get your it together. #Whack

Been here a few times while visiting EIU. Small town sports bar. Place has always been busy each time I have been there. Their burgers are always good. Hand pressed beef and not just a frozen hockey puck you can get at so many places. If you are up for something different you can try "The Pile." Not a ton of sit down options in the Chuck so this is typically a go to for us.

Hey, again, faithful review readers!…read more So, today, we are dining at Alamo Steak House here in Mattoon, IL. We live in a small town area and this is definitely a local favorite for many in the area, us included. This is to say that the experience, the food and drink is consistently very well done. As we pulled up, the parking lot was JAMMED! It was so crowded there was only about two spots available. Wifey told me to check the wait time. So, we went in. No wait!!! It appears that everyone drove separately. The hostess was very pleasant. We had her switch our table because we like the tables vs. the booth. Today we sat in the upstairs balcony. We've sat here once before a few years ago. Pleasant. More cozy than the common dining room. Our server was very prompt, and since we come here enough, we knew what we wanted. I got the smothered chicken with a sidecar porkchop (just because I can). Sides of House Salad and Onion Rings. Wifey ordered the distiller, baked potato and a salad. For the first time ever, the dinner rolls at the table were actually overdone. It's usually crisp outside and soft inside, but this was actually way too hard. Wifey likes things well done and she said this is just not edible. This could have been easily remedied, but we did not want more so we left it be. But this was the first time this has ever been an issue in 13 years. Salads came out first. I had ordered a house salad with blue cheese but got a Caesar salad. Lots of Parmesan, good presentation. I decided I was meant to have a Caesar salad and was glad this mix up occurred. Wifey had a house salad and it was good, but she was eyeing up my Caesar with those thieving eyes! So we will call it a happy accident! Shlafly's makes a competent stout, a little hoppier than you'd expect from a stout, a little spritzier than you're used to in a stout, but I knew this going in. It's a solid brew, but not creamy like most stouts. Wifey's raspberry margarita was, good, according to her, but a little sweet. She squeezed in some lemon and lime and that helped add more tart which pleased her. She does not usually get non citrus based Margaritas, so she chalked it up to that. Again, the drink was still good, just not her favorite. A little long in the main course delivery, but, wifey had a medium well steak and that takes some time. However, it seems to be taking much longer than expected... The food DID show up, just before it became a seriously long wait. My food: Most things were not quite hot enough. All the flavors were great, but, it feels like the food was under a heat lamp that didn't work for too long, or maybe not under it for too long of a time.. At a steakhouse as "high quality" as this one, I expected better. Since our server was uber busy, we didn't voice our complaint. He was truly running hard up and down the stairs so we have no complaints with his service. But we are both disappointed that it was very not hot. And we were hungry, and the flavors were good, so we chose to eat it as is. Wifey said all the flavors of her steak and potato were on point but admittedly the not hot part took its toll on the overall. We are sad to report all of these very unusual mishaps but we really still swear by the place for the great food and for the many, many experiences that were consistently on point. We also know if we would have complained or asked it would have been fixed no holds barred. But it was pretty busy and we did not want to wait. So if one experience out of maybe 50 was a bit sub par, we are still going to consider it a winner and well worth looking past. It just seems everything happened at once. So hopefully we are all good for another 50 visits!

I ordered the beer battered cod and my partner the plank salmon. We waited a reasonable time to a bit long for the entrees to be served. The server did come to the table a couple times to tell us it would be out soon. When the food was served the waitress said she would be back to check on our dinner. I looked across the table and from there could see the salmon was way overcooked. My partner took a couple bites and agreed the salmon was overcooked and quite dry. I tried piece one of two of the cod and found it was a bit greasy with an over abundance of breading but tasted OK. When the server came to check on the food my partner told her the salmon was overcooked. She replied "sorry, I'll tell them" and left. We expected someone to come to the table and offer a redo or substitution but *surprise* no one and nothing happened. I thought my dinner was going to be OK until I tried the second piece of fish. It was tough and rubbery. The server finally came back to the table and asked if we wanted dessert without mentioning anything about the overcooked salmon. By this time we were so disappointed with the experience we didn't want to take a chance on a bad a dessert. In closing let me just make a couple points: 1) when food and service are good I willingly pay a good price for it 2) when food and service are not good I expect for the establishment to make it right by replacing the food or discounting the price - Neither happened! In this instance it was a $60 lesson. Needlessly to say I will not go back!

When I walked in I asked where it was and the security staff told me to go to the 10th floor. You have to walk through the hotel part and go up. Once you get off I promise you, you feel that you are no longer in Terre Haute. I honestly felt like I was in Charlotte, NC. The view is insane looking at the greenery of what makes Indiana so pretty in the summer time (I can't wait to go back during fall to take in the view then too). The music was a total vibe. It was R&B, Chill POP (is that a thing, don't know how else to describe). There is an outdoor patio area where there was a guy playing live music and people sitting on couches relaxing and watching while enjoying a cocktail. I sat at the bar because I was by myself and certainly didn't want to take up an entire couch and leave that for others that may have larger parties. As soon as I sat down my server came to take my order. While I wasn't really planning to eat, once I looked at the menu the Chicken Nachos were calling my name. Even though I am counting calories, I had to order. Man, when they came out they were huge and so so good. You can order the chicken blackened which I did and man it was great. I just sat and enjoyed my very caloric nachos and a cocktail and just really took it in. I don't live in Terre Haute, I live in Indianapolis, but I spend a ton of time in Terre Haute for work. At that moment, I felt proud. I felt proud of Terre Haute for making the investment and proud that they are attempting to change the city by offering things like this. I host client events for work and I am thinking of ways to host something fun here, so I will be back!

Through the hotel lobby entrance, take a hard right and then another right to the elevator bank, up to the 10th floor. There is plenty of signage to tell you how to find Altitude. A greeter is at the podium to offer a friendly welcome. We are actually not going to have a drink nor something to eat (note that they do offer food in addition to adult beverages). My aging parents and I simply want to walk around and see the space. And what a great space. Navy, white, golds and gray....sofas, bar seating, cream curtains, loads of windows, giant patio. I liked that the greeter was open and welcoming for us to simply walk around...and he was nice to my older parents who were moving slow. Thinking to myself that this place is more dressed up than dressed down, I am quick to remember this is Terre Haute. I think you could get away with a spectrum of clothing. Save the crappy cut offs and flip flops for another place, but I am certain they would not turn you away at the door. But with that, for a dressed up girls night out or a romantic spot in jeans with someone you love, this spot would be excellent. What a view and a what a patio! Now it is June and at 6:45pm as we are outside on this patio to take in the view, there is little shade, it is a bit warm and the sun is glaring to a person like myself that shuns the sun. But what a great space. Very open and spacious, some hightop tables, but mostly very tasteful outdoor sofas and chairs, with fire-pit coffee tables. Heat lamps are about and I know this space will be a hit at the perfect shoulder months of cool Spring nights and crisp Fall evenings. Full views south, West and North of the Vigo county area. This space in general is definitely a step up in the coolness factor for places to get a drink in this town. I give Altitude a 5 on Yelp and I am yet to have a drink. I'm optimistic that the bone dry Tito's martini with olives I will order on my next visit will match the ambiance we took in. And if they have blue cheese stuffed olives to boot, my cup will runnith over. I will come back.
