Once we started shooting, the instructor would check in periodically with helpful tips, such as how long to hold the draw and adjusting my aim when my arrows were consistently landing high. I really enjoyed archery itself, although I wasn't especially impressed with the instructional aspect of the class. The guidance was helpful, but I would have appreciated more hands-on coaching throughout the lesson. My biggest criticism is that I think a beginner archery class should provide arm guards or, at the very least, strongly recommend them. As someone completely new to the sport, I didn't even know arm guards were standard equipment. As a result, my forearm ended up badly bruised and inflamed from the bowstring. After doing some research, I now understand how easily this can be prevented. I'll definitely make sure any future lessons or equipment rentals include an arm guard, but I think beginners should be informed about this before they start.

The open field has that peaceful golden-hour glow in the early evening, and the playground is clean and well maintained -- perfect for siblings to burn off energy while practice is happening. As the sun started setting around 6:30, it became clear there are no field lights, and it gets dark quickly. Also worth noting -- once dusk hits, the mosquitos definitely come out. We were swatting quite a bit by the end of practice. Another important thing to know: there are no restrooms or porta potties onsite, so plan ahead if you're bringing kids or staying for a while. Helpful tip: this is a great daytime park with a lovely playground, but aim for earlier hours and bring bug spray if you're staying into the evening. Update: They now have one porta potty near the playground which is usually very clean.

If you're in the area, it's a nice place for a short dog walk or lunch/reading on a bench. What I like best about the park is the large number of shade trees. It's actually one of the more overall shaded parks in downtown Sacramento, giving a welcome respite from the heat in the long, hot summer months. That shade can also attract quite a few homeless who use it as a semi-camp/place to snooze, so keep that in mind. Not my first choice for a picnic, but definitely doable. There's a Senior Center in the center of the park that I've actually never seen in operation. One thing to note is that a lot of the park traffic might be spillover from the bars on a Friday or Saturday night. Also, the meter maids are ruthless around here, so definitely keep your meter full. I spent an afternoon here and they came around every hour like clockwork.

For the longest time I did realize how extensive the roads and parking is into this area as generally my entrance into this park is off the Bike Trail. It makes a great stop for picnics or for a quick restroom breaks. Activities: There are a lot of open fields, picnic areas, and water areas to explore off the river. One thing is that I would caution exploring the waterways around here as they can be deceptively fast and dangerous. There is also a great handicap accessible fishing areas off the farthest parking lot. Great for working and watching the waterway from the Harold Richy memorial bridge. Cons: It is a self-pay park so important to keep in mind. Can be a little hard to find but is straight down Arden Way.

Lots of parking and the trail is easy to spot from the various lots they had available, There were a variety of picnic areas, bathroom facilities and walking trails. It's close to neighborhoods in Carmichael, which is nice for people who live nearby and can walk right over. Access to the bike trail was my main reason for visiting and the trail itself warrants its own review. Minus one star, as having an option to pay entry by credit card would be nice. I mean, who has $7 exact change that they carry with them these days? Anyway, I would likely use this park again for a jumping off point for trail rides. Nice, clean, scenic suburban park.
