As a first time visitor I noted safety is compromised. I'm rating the place without my safety concerns but be aware of these. 1-Weapons are removed and returned to cases other than on the line. This should only take place while the line is hot, and pointing down range while on a picnic tables; not on the tailgate, trunk or hood of a vehicle. 2-I had the only open chamber indicators. 3-A shooter was using metal targets at 15 yards. The range runs to approximately 400 yards. There are about six picnic tables made of a stone material oriented with the long side parallel to a target. If they were bench-rests they'd be oriented with the long side perpendicular to the target with two seats. Whatever you shoot consider having something to cover the area of the table you are using. There are no restrooms. You could be isolated here so if there's an accident bring help may take awhile. read more

For a BLM site, it's not too bad, but a lot depends on who's there shooting. Last time I was there it was a bunch of kids and AR's, and it felt a little sketchy, especially when you hear full auto. You will want to bring your own targets and stand. read more

The range itself is decent, it's the people who go there which make or break the experience. Last time I was there everyone knew what they were doing and I felt very safe. The previous visit I packed up and left early because some of the shooters were being unsafe- firing at metal targets set up 25m from the line, popping off rounds with people down range during a cease fire, flashing neighbors while changing mags etc. I think the key is going when there few others. The range is good for pistol - there's a big berm at about 30m on half the line and clear shooting out to 300m on the other half. Take paper and your own target frames. Also take a shade structure and plenty of water during warm weather. read more

This is a good Range if you own it, you have to be careful these days because a lot of people in the gun range have mental issues and people who don't have common sense for safety a lot of them, guns are fun until something happens, that place is remote and can't imagine how to get help if something happens. read more

I love this place. It's a bit of a drive for me to get to but worth it. The folks that use the place seem to cooperate with each other very well as there is no range master. So it seems everyone takes their safety and everyone else's into consideration. At least when I've been there. I gave it four stars because I would've liked to have had shorter shooting periods, especially when trying to setup a scope! Other than that pretty cool place. read more

Bring your own stand for your paper targets. Do not expect to shoot at anything but paper. Because of this policy, it is the single cleanest firing range I have ever used or seen! And it is free. Be a good citizen when you go, so it will be as nice for the next person as it was for you. The only thing I don't like is that you have to drive miles of unpaved washboard surface to get there and back. If you have a beat up pickup truck, definitely drive that. read more

Nice table pretty clean and most people are respectful of setting up targets and calling out for all clear to fire again.

This was my first time coming to Spenceville Shooting range. This was along the way to Ferry Falls where my friends and I were planning on going for a hike along a trail and maybe catch a water fall. We elected to take a small stop and shoot some guns along the way. This facility is closed on Tuesdays between 6-9:30 AM for clean up. Those that use it are invited to bring their own targets but to clean up after themselves. There is a serious lack of shade so bring and EZ up if you are going to come to this facility during the summer. It love that it was free and I was in the company of amazing friends so you couldn't beat the memories being made. read more

Great range nice people, simple, you can set up your own custom tragets, shoot clays and have a good time. I would recomend going on a week day in the morning when it is less busy. Go during the week. If anyone is acting unsafe, just pack up and leave. Use only paper or clay targets and take them with you when you leave. Clean up after yourself : food, bags, shells, targets etc. There are no garbage cans, water, restrooms or other amenities. About 4 concrete picnic tables are there to place your equipment on and shoot from. If any of your firearms are illegal, you could be arrested. read more

I hunt Spenceville during dove season, and I've seen my share of craziness during the hunt. However, nothing prepared me for what happened at the range last Saturday. I brought my 11 YO son for a morning of plinking with our .22. We arrived early, and set up under the tree on the right side of the range so we could shoot the 50 and 75 yard berms. The couple next to us on the right were very friendly and offered to share the bench. The family to our left were also very nice--ex military guys, their wives, and son about the age of mine. The military guys were calling the all-clears and the whole line was observing the handling rules well. Then, a few lanes to our left, closer to the 25 yard berm, another family with older kids rolled up. They set up a propane tank, and some computer equipment stuffed with that exploding target powder that you see on Top Shot. They started rattling off .223 from their mini 14 and showering hot brass on our station. After a few whacks with their .308, the computers exploded, and so did the propane tank. Shortly thereafter, you could hear the whines of richochets as someone shot the propane tank at an angle and/or with a round that could not penetrate the tank. My car was backed in not more than 5 feet from where my son and I were shooting, and sometime during the shooting a round came right back through the rear glass. Check the photos. Needless to say, we packed up immediately, and so did the folks on either side of us. The glass cost over $500 to replace, but thank goodness no one was hurt or killed. Won't be back. It's too bad, because that was one of the only places I knew of to plink cans, golfballs, and other rimfire targets. read more

People don't seem to understand that the range is ran by dept. of fish and game to help prevent people shooting on the rest of the public land. The law states you can only shoot clay or paper targets on public land. People don't really seem to care as they drag printers, propane tanks and other junk out there to shoot and just leave it there. It's a decent range for what it is. There are some very stupid people that come here so be careful of uneducated people. Also have heard reports of theft... So don't leave your guns unattended and keep some ammo for when you leave. Also there are cattle that sometimes get past the fencing so you have to watch for that on occasion. Pack it in, pack it out please. Safe Shooting! read more

Horrible place. First time and last time here. There was a seize fire so each person can fix there targets. A gentle man down range. A guy starts open fire right the the guy down rang got off 4 shots. Until his attention was caught. He began to hold fire. Guy walked back from setting up his target told him to pay attention. This is definitely not a good place it is not controlled by anyone any type of person can come there. There are no rules that has to be followed. Had a fun time shooting off pistols, shotguns and rifles with a group of friends. The place wasn't too crowded for an early Saturday and the crowd was responsible and safe. Think we capped out at around 350 yards with the 6.5 Creedmoor precision rifle, grouping within 2 inches. I've heard stories of bad crowds going out there because there's no range control but I'd say it's a pretty good place to shoot. read more

If you're a newbie don't go here. It can be dangerous, there's no range help. Bring targets and or a bench if you have multiple firearms. Pay attention to the other shooters, there really is no dividers and sometimes metal targets are used which can ricochet. read more

1st time here w/our son. Great facility. Spent about 3 hrs. here w/a full line of shooters & no complaints. Everyone courteous, respectful & abiding by range courtesy. I can see the potential for issues w/bad apples given the rural area & no range staff. But.. berms for shooting from handgun to long rifle ranges, no range fees etc. It is very isolated so bring any supplies & do bring a trash bag to haul out your trash. There is/was zero shelter/tree cover so I'm sure summer shoots are toasty. If you're short on target materials theres plenty of target clay shrapnel & other remnants to plink away at. read more

Went with my son last Monday. A little apprehensive, given the urban legends of accidental discharges, armed robberies by bandits coming down from the mountains, and horror stories of newbies shooting the person next to them. Instead, found a great bunch of adults, responsible cease-fire and all-clear calls, a laid-back experience, and considerate people giving up their benches to new arrivals. No shortage of boxes and things to shoot at- but will build a target stand to take with us next time. Frustrating to have the boxes spin on you while shooting- but that was just me being unprepared. Some shade would be nice, some asphalt on the washboard gravel drive out would be nice, and people hauling out their junk would be nicer- but for a free range, absolutely no room to complain. Really enjoyed the day, the freedom to shoot responsibly without the overbearing and condescending Dillman RO's lording over us, and the nice people we met. I'll definitely go back, as long as it's a weekday. Not sure I am ready to brave the weekend dummies just yet. read more

Been our there a couple times and will go again. The last time I made it out we found two weeks after the fact, a ricochet had wedged it self between the seat and the head rest in the back seat of the Suburban. Thankfully the rear doors where open and it didn't hit the glass. While we were there we had a ricochet land about two feet to the left of my wife's foot. I picked it up and noticed it was a 45. There was only one guy shoot a 45 so I went and talked to him, nicely. I told him what happened and asked him to shoot at something else. He was agreed and apologize emphatically and said he was done shooting. I urged him to still shoot just something else. He said it was just to close to hitting somebody and was done. We shook hands and I told him no hard feelings and parted ways. Everyone out there was respectful of others and kept an eye out for safety. Which was great. I look forward to going back soon. read more

Its not huge, not much shade at all, kinda crowded but it's FREE! I was very hesitant to come here with the kids (ages 6, 9 and 16) due to the yelp reveiws but decided to give it a try and use some extra caution. We found a parking spot, backed up into it and unloaded our stuff onto one of maybe 4 picnic tables. We brought clay and paper targets only but did see quite a bit of people using other things as targets such as a helium balloon container, milk jugs full of water and stuffed animals with explosives inside (which made my daughter who loves stuffed animals a little sad lol). The "cease fire" calls were loud and obeyed by all and the "all clears" were double checked. I actually felt quite safe here and there were a ton of other families with kids. I will come back again to shoot here and I am so happy that my experience was nothing like some of the others. I'm a fan. read more

Wow, I was there again last weekend & some newbie was fooling with his pistol and shot the next guy just chilling 10 ft. away. Just shot him in the foot, but............... hey! Pool of blood..... screaming....... etc. Quite the spectacle. It's like anyplace............ full of great people, but sprinkled with the occasional idiot or young kid that thinks he's Rambo. Use your common sense, don't shoot other's targets, respect "clear" when you hear it. When the bozos pull up, just leave. Don't get in an argument, you're gonna lose. It's not worth getting into a fight while holding a gun. Weekdays are not crowded. Weekends can be a zoo. We spent 3 hours there Friday, skeet, AR15, Glock, BBQ & had a great time! ;-) I will not visit on the weekends. P.S. I never saw so much camo! read more

A nice self-serve range. General courtesy among everyone, "clear" and ""down range" call out protocols were generally self regulated and followed by everyone (except for one yobbo at the far end who walked out to reset his target while people were shooting. Good Cross-section of people out there shooting. Still some there just wanted to shoot stuff up and show everyone how big their balls were. What is telling is watching families. Great to see that, but some of those Dads clearly are not interested is teaching fundamentals to the kids. I saw a young girl, probably 11 or 12, shooting her dad's assault style rifle style. She is at the firing line standing with both feet together tight, and arching backward to counter the weight of the rifle. Clearly struggling to hold it and also clearly having some fear of the rifle. Dad gave no instruction. Fortunately she did not completely lose her balance. At the same time another relative probably 20 year old guy, is sipping his RC car all over the place in the parking lot behind. Just watch everyone around you all the time. read more

The greatest thing about this range is also a problem it is free and by free that means no monitoring no rules no oversight and no range master - it is a absolute free-for-all! The problem seems to always start when yahoos show up without any regard for gun safety or range safety and start shooting indiscriminately. Things can get out of hand really quick. i've seen accidental discharges and shooting at unauthorized targets such as Metal objects prone to ricochet vehicle rims propane tanks you get the just. The fun really starts when some Yahoo backs his four-wheel-drive pick up to the firing line and starts shooting his 50 caliber mounted in the back of his truck bed. seriously! i'm surprised nobody's been killed yet or this place hasn't been shut down read more

I enjoyed shooting here,can't beat free.Lots of shooters but they come and go,so be patient. About a hour from Sacramento,was easy to find with navigation.No garbage cans or restrooms,so bring a bucket/tp and garbage bag. read more

I went to the range the day after Thanksgiving, The place was full. Over 36 vehicles and approximately 150 people. Everyone that I talked to was extremely pleasant and safe. I was very pleased. Yes, people should only use paper and clay targets and you should use only legal firearms. As a whole, pleople were careful and had a good, safe time. Bring a garbage bag to help keep the area safe and clean. read more

Use caution when out here. Most people are good but there always seem to be the idiots. Drive by the other day and was saddened to see alll the trash. After reading the other reviews I think I may be lucky with my two experiences at this range. I spent about 2+ hours there today (Saturday 12-2pm-ish), no mishaps. There were plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, and targets left all over the first berm, but nothing too offensive. I did notice a couple fire extinguishers over to my right where people were shooting long range; fire extinguisher never hurt nobody. I had a much better experience at this outdoor range than I have been having indoors in a premium, controlled, paid environment. I think it was the relaxed atmosphere, or it could have been all the vitamins from the sun my Mom is always trying to get me to absorb. Anyhow, bring paper or clay targets, sunscreen, and maybe a folding chair for everyone. read more

******To whom it may apply****** off duty police are often present so avoid illicit behavior and don't be a degenerate. Also don't bring garbage (TVs, Canisters, Plastic toys, stuffed animals etc) to shoot, it's only fun for one magazine, it's a newbie move and it may lead to this range being closed. Paper targets, and clay pigeons are pretty cheap after all and help you become a proficient shooter, it's easy to blast into nothing hell get a gong and see what you can really do out passed 100! I have been to this range more than half a dozen times, at all different times and never have I experienced anyone with a belligerent or threatening attitude. It is very packed most of the day so it's best to go early on week days, forget about holiday shooting unless you're there before the sun. Though some newbies sometimes shoot carelessly or launch brass into your station a firm stink eye or better yet a friendly notice usually makes them realize their oversight. Ultimately you mustn't be dissuaded to interact with your neighbors if you want to inspire an amiable etiquette, if someone is ricocheting at 25-50 yards, kindly let them know of the dangers and they'll more than likely be polite about it, after all it's easy to get lost in the gun fire. The range is pretty nice and goes out to 300 yards I believe, nice for short range or medium range practice, though it is quite messy with junk a lot of the time -it is cleaned every once in a while and offers great opportunity to get some time in with your firearms. This is my preferred place to go and shoot for sure, it is best to bring a lot of targets with you as calling a cease fire every 5 minutes for one target out at 250 is a drag for your self and other shooters. Although when you call a cease fire it usually works down the line pretty quickly, even so bring a lot of targets. read more

I've read a lot of mixed reviews on the Spenceville range. Some are accurate, some must be from people who didn't really get the atmosphere of a public shooting range. Having been there about six times this year, I'd have to say that this place is as safe as just about anyplace I've shot at. Of course, you need to act like an adult! My only gripe is that it seems like people show up here on the weekend, shoot trap and have a habit of leaving spent shotgun hulls all over the place. Reluctantly went out to the Spenceville shooting range today. I had heard of all of the bad stories every one mentioned in the other reviews, but had also heard good things from other people so decided to see for myself. I was fully expecting to drive out be disappointed and drive back to the indoor range in Grass Valley. I guess I got lucky because it was and excellent experience, it was not too crowded and the people that were there were shooting responsibly. Will be going again hopefully will never run into the problems that other people have experienced when they went. read more
