I recently took my daughter here for her first appointment at two years old check out and we had a wonderful experience! Everyone from the front desk to the technician as well as the dentist made sure that my daughter and I were comfortable! They have lots of little kid friendly things to get them through such as stuffed animals to hold during the exam as well as a goodie bag with a cute token to get a toy at the end. We had Dr Melanie and she was amazing and my daughter warmed right up to her. I have three kids with very different personalities, but one thing they have in common is a natural fear of both the doctor and the dentist. I remember all the trauma I went through as a kid going to the dentist so I had done my due diligence to make sure I found a practice/team that had the patience, experience, environment and tools to deal with children. I am so glad to tell you that Discovery Pediatric Dentistry was the perfect match for all those expectations. Each person is friendly, patient and understanding, more than I am with my own kids (just being honest) they aren't judgemental and most importantly all my kids love them! And yes, if you're willing to shell out alittle extra...they have what I call "bravery air" which helps a lot! The office itself has a cute little play room for the kids to hang out in if you don't always have a babysitter handy and need to bring all of them while one sibling is getting work done. My son is only 14 months old so I was worried about going to his 1st appointment. Dr. Emily Wang was the BEST! She calmed him down and even got him to sit still while she brushed his teeth. For a large practice - and they have a considerable number of support staff - Discovery Pediatric Dentistry feels cozy and personal. The hygienists and dentists are so skilled at working with children that even though those little ones can be squirmy, they find a way to gently connect with each child, "See the mirror? Want to hold it for me? What pretty white teeth you have - can you see?" "Here's my special toothbrush - see it tickles a little. Can you help me to brush your teeth? Do you want orange or chocolate toothpaste?" The patter is so gentle that the children quickly forget their fear and focus on everything else and allow the visit to go smoothly and painlessly. Chock full of quality toys in the outer and inner waiting rooms, the children forget they're there to see the dentist. And they're allowed to take any of the toys to the dentist's chair for a some comfort and distraction. I highly recommend this practice! And they seem to take most insurance plans, too. read more

My kids absolutely hate doctors. Every trip to anything medical is cause for a lot of drama. That being said, we really wanted to get their teeth checked because it's better to have good teeth than to pay through the nose to fix cavities! Dr. Haeberlein's office is very organized. All the new patient forms are online so you can fill them out before you come. Much better than trying to fill out stuff at their office when you don't have some info. Office is nice, clean and cheery. The Kid actually enjoyed his appointment. No crying and screaming from that one. A lot of crying and screaming from Kid Jr. The dentists were gentle and very patient. Staff is also very nice. Kids get a goody bag after their appointment. My only complaint is that parking is a bitch in that neighborhood. The bldg garage was full (at 9 in the morning?!!? Really?) so we had to circle the block for a lot. Out of pure desperation, we settled for a lot that charged $15!?!?! $15 for an hour appt. Boy that was a lot! read more

I love Discovery Pediatric Dentistry and could sing their praises until the end of time. The front office staff has always been incredibly patient and helpful, especially in confirming my insurance coverage and with cost estimates for procedures (I have had terrible past experiences with other pediatric dental offices in regards to this, so it is very important to me). The dental assistants are all super sweet and caring and wonderful with kids, even my shy little dude warms up to them quickly. My son has seen Dr. Emily and Dr. Nate (he now sees Dr. Nate for regular check-ups, but we also loved Dr. Emily - she was very kind), and they are just great. Beyond how I feel about the office and its staff, my son loves Dr. Nate. That is saying something. I don't feel like any kid particularly enjoys going to the dentist or the doctor, but my kid tells me that Dr. Nate is his favorite doctor. Little dude never fights me about brushing his teeth, especially if I tell him "don't you want Dr. Nate to tell you what nice clean teeth you have?" The most recent visit he had, they stressed more flossing and my kid is all about reminding me about flossing, even if he doesn't remember until after we've read bedtime stories. read more

Dr. Fred is so great with my kids! I am personally a terrible dentaphobe, so I was determined to get the boys off to a healthy start with some one gentle and professional. My ten year old never complains about having to go to the dentist- and the result is: regular cleanings=no cavities He may charge a bit more than some, BUT the peace of mind is priceless and I DONT spend money on fillings etc. I am sure that it saves me $$$ in the long run! read more

1. We have private insurance, and I have noticed we are treated the same as the parents with denti-cal and other public-supported plans. I notice this because I'm a research administrator and know that very few dentists take denti-cal in the city. So good on him for that. 2. They are very efficient and convenient. We've gotten decent care there. 3. I had some very minor issues with a few of their policies and wrote about it here. However, later, Dr. Haeberlein not only explained the policies to me more clearly, but sent out a memo to his staff clarifying how he wants to be responsive to the parent's preferences and concerns. He is always looking for ways to improve the practice. 4. Overall I like really like them. The kids don't have cavities, and for the most part the technicians and dentists have been very accomodating. They let me stay by my children's side on the rare occasions we have had to get work and the kids have been unscathed. Since I give them foot rubs when they're getting work done, and always ask for nitrous, they actually kind of don't mind the dentist at all. ;-) 5. They always spend time to explain the procedures, and they investigate with your insurance what you will owe. With three kids, I appreciate the lack of surprises to my checkbook! 6. The staff always remember me when I call for appointments - the fact that he retains his staff for years speaks well of the practice. read more

Great dental practice. Nice office. Difficult front office. My big pet peeve with this office is dealing with the front office's billing system. We are raising one adopted and two foster children on a limited budget and yes the kids are using California's Denti-Cal system to process the claims. In two instances the office staff has not been that accommodating to the frustrations of being on public assistance. You can only make dental appointments using Denti-Cal on Wednesdays (maybe Thursdays) and only during the early daytime work hours. You have to take kids out of school to get their teeth cleaned. Yep it's a pain and it feels like the office is only mildly interested in seeing children on this dental plan. This seems to be a subtle discriminatory practice to keep poor folks separate from the "paying clients." But the biggest frustration is with getting the front office to really understand the state billing system and support you to make it work. They were unable verify current eligibility, even with current documentation and up-to-date benefits card. The burden is up to you, even at the last moment, to figure out why the current benefits card doesn't show up correctly in the system. read more

Consider: it's Sunday, on Memorial Day weekend. I take my small to the park. Hooray! The park! It'll be fun! Of course you can bring your scooter! So it's me, and my 8-year old daughter. I am a lucky man. And there's a hill. The park is at the bottom of the hill, and we are at the top. A sensible person would not race the child to the bottom, but I'm a parent and so clearly not sensible to begin with. Events transpire and physics takes over, and now I am an extra lucky man: now I have a daughter and part of a tooth. Discovery Dental is my daughter's primary dental group. They were the first we called, and of course we dropped a voicemail, but it's Sunday, and I don't remember if they have on-call or not, and listen sweetie, just don't breathe in through your mouth, ok? The wind you're sucking in is just making your tooth hurt more. It's Sunday, on Memorial Day weekend, and I'm now one of those famous for spending a holiday in the ER. Guess who's not picking up the phone? It's any one of countless "emergency 24-hour dental work". Here's something I learn: if it says "emergency 24 hour dental work" in red bold letters, it probably isn't. Over the next 2 hours it's possible I called all of them; one calls one back, from a nice man who is in Petaluma and could be back in town "in about eight hours". About 3 hours in, we get a call from Discovery: they got our voice mail. Yes, we're still in the ER. No, we haven't gotten an oral surgeon yet. "Drop everything, discharge immediately, and come to the office." Really? "Yes, we're en route and will be there waiting for you." Um. OK. So we do: ZOOM. 60 minutes later my daughter has her tooth back together. I don't know from dentists. But any dentist willing to stop what they're doing on Memorial Day weekend, on Sunday, and open up and repair a tooth at a moment's notice, is outstanding in my book. Prior visits, they're perfectly acceptable dentists. Future visits I'm certain will be just as functional: open wide, spit, you need to floss more. But opening up like that, and with the professionalism they had, was over the top outstanding. They will always be my daughter's dentist. read more

Took my 22-month-old to see Dr. Nate this morning and he was WONDERFUL. I was a nervous wreck, and I must have been transmitting major telepathy because the whole time he was reassuring me about the appointment. He was so gentle and friendly with my son, and was most concerned about making him comfortable about the whole process in order to establish a good initial experience at the dentist. He answered all my questions, left decisions up to me (fluoride treatment, polisher, etc), and gave a very thorough explanation of his Xray philosophy (not necessary at this age, and conservative from age 3 or 4 on depending on risk factors). He suggested I hold my son on my lap while he did the cleaning, and even though he was talking to a toddler he explained everything he was doing. My son was curious, calm, didn't fight, cry or make a peep of complaint. The cleaning was going so well Dr. Nate was even able to go in with the polisher and get rid of some stains on my son's teeth from iron supplements we gave him a year ago. And, bless that man, he showed me the overbite caused by the pacifier but made absolutely no judgment call about it and didn't lecture me. I almost cried in relief on the spot. The waiting room toys were clean, and the people at the front desk and all the hygienists we passed were so friendly and good with kids. And they take my insurance! I am so happy we found this place (a friend recommended Dr. Nate to me). Highly recommend. read more

I've been coming here since I was a little and now my daughter is a patient. With the new renovations this place is looking really up to par! The front desk ladies and back office staff have been here forever! They are all really nice and all still look the same from when I was small. Pricing I guess is normal? Not sure but I think they have payment plans. Over all experience I love this place and the staff are again, very sweet and nice. P.S Dr. Melanie Perea is our go to! We love her she's very gentle with the children and all the hygienist are great too! Oh and the X-Ray lady has been here like forrrrrevvverrrr! Much respect! Discovery Pediatric Dentists are the best! Their facility is big & very well oriented for toddlers. Not only are they patient & polite, but they're very accommodating. When my daughter is kicking & screaming to get an Xray, they have plan B. They use this thing that almost looks like a straight jacket, but it worked. They don't force the kids to do anything while performing a checkup or cleaning. Most of the toys in the waiting room are outdated or broken so only 4 stars. They also limit the child to only 1 parent inside even though it is roomy inside. read more

Minimal waiting, plenty of fun toys to play with, bright open exam room and exceptionally patient dentists and hygienists - The whole experience was super low stress and my son sailed through with no problems, as he did recently with his second visit. He had a cavity, and they 1) gave me options, 2) told me in advance what the cost was going to be, 3) were very kind and patient (my kid was super chill), and they did a great job. The staff were all very kind and polite and patient (I was late to the appointment by about 10 minutes). Our dentist, Dr. Perea was awesome. Love this place. Let's be real, taking your kids to the dentist is never fun, but Discovery Pediatric Dentistry makes it as easy, simple and stress-free as possible. We have never waited more than 10 minutes for our appointment and since I have 4 kids, I just schedule them back to back. As you can imagine scheduling 4 appointments all together is not easy, but they always manage to make it work for us. This works because they have a great kids play area so the other 3 don't mind spending 2 hours at the dentist. Dr Emily is so patient, sweet and calm that even my nervous nellie kids make it through their appointments without too much angst. These doctors are fantabulous! Dr. Fred runs the joint. But, when you are blessed enough to get him to work on your kids teeth, you will be so tickled. My kids have been going to Discovery Dental since birth! And during different times of their loves we have been on all kinds of dental plans (public and private). True. You can't make an appointment on Saturday if you are on public assistance. But, I can see the logic in that. If you are on public assistance, you probably don't work. So, you can bring your kid in during the week. Working parents get the Saturday appointments. I am not biased. i can just see the logic in it. I have NEVER had an issue with their billing. As a matter of fact, those folks in there are pretty well-versed in insurance billing. They are all very smart and friendly. Fred is no "easy win". So, to work in his office you have to have your stuff together. His doctors are all smart as hell! I just have to give it up to the entire group. They know what they are doing. They know how to handle your kids (except ain't nobody gonna put one of my kids on one of those straight-jacket thingees....it's just NOT that serious). But, EVERYTHING is up to the parents. They don't hard-sell you on anything! If you want the baby-teeth to rot out ...they aren't trippin. That is your call as the mama or the daddy! The staff speak all kinds of languages fluently. I have personally heard Chinese (different dialects), Spanish (w/ cuban and puerto rican accents) and Hebrew. They aren't cheap. But, I don't know that I would REALLY want a cheap dentist working in my kids mouths. So, that is a call you have to make. But, they do validate if you decide to park in the building. But, in my circle, the entire crew takes their kids to Dr. Haeberlein's Discovery Dental Group read more

The nurse was so nice to him, and made him feel very comfortable, explained the whole process, and made sure he was aware of what was happening to avoid any tension. We were done in about an hour. Our insurance changed so we had to switch dentists and I am so glad that we did. They were so nice to both me and my son. He had SIX cavities, a horrifying thing for a parent to hear. He had to have 3 visits all together, the diagnosis, at which time the dentist gave him a lecture about candy and brushing... which was great because he listened to the dentist more than to me. The next two visits were his fillings and a crown. They comforted him the whole time, let me sit with him, explained everything to him and to me thoroughly. They kept him preoccupied throughout both procedures. After all that work you would think that a child would hate the dentist, but they made the experience as good as it could have been and we both left there loving everyone that served us. The minute we walked into the office, the staff checked us in, updated our insurance information, and we barely waited a minute before our children had their x rays taken. Before our younger one was even finished, our older one was already having his teeth cleaned by Mila. He was fortunate not to have cavities, but the staff and Dr. Emily Wang went even a step farther for us. Since they checked and our insurance covered it, the staff also had his teeth sealed.
