We were lucky to get a walk in table around 12:30 on a Monday. Service was quick and competent. We shared an order of veggie pakora that was good, not great, with some lovely flavored sauces. We then shared Ruby Red chicken, green veggies and cucumber salad, as well as both garlic and cheese nan. All was delicious.
Dishoom was alright - good, solid food, but nothing special. We were excited to try it because we missed the opportunity to do so in London. It's definitely overhyped, but we enjoyed our meal. I just wished we didn't spend one of our precious meals in Europe here. We started with their chai. It's famous, but quite small and also not my cup of tea. Their chicken ruby was good, tastes like butter chicken with a bit more tomato? There's Edinburgh special was my favorite item here. The lamb was tender and perfectly spicy. The potato on top didn't do anything for the dish though. Overall, it was fine. If you traveled to Edinburgh, don't spend a meal here. You can get food on par to this almost anywhere. The ambience was fun and loud and crowded so if that's your thing, this is the place.
We had heard about Dishoom before we had arrived in the UK, and it did not disappoint! There was a long wait when we arrived, but they were offering chai samples to people in line, and within minutes we were inside at the waiting area where we had a drink and met some friendly people. The food was worth the wait; absolutely delicious!
We literally came here twice on our one week vacation. It was the best meal of the trip. Amazing, I have no words. Worth the wait, lives up to the hype, just go, you won't regret it. Might be best Indian meal I have ever had. We had "non-Indian food eaters" (super picky) and they found things they loved.
Second Dishoom location visited (first outside of England) and just as mind-blowing. Tried some different stuff this time; their take on the "British breakfast" is done so well. The akuri eggs are amazingly spiced, the beans are slightly sweet in a delicious way, and the bread is flavored well. The porridge, as always, is flavored with the perfect amount of sweetness. Can't wait until they open a location in New York! Walked in easily Wednesday 11 AM, but it was pretty busy by the time we left!
There was a 90 minute wait on a weeknight in June and one person had to stay in waiting the whole time. They were very precise about the wait time and even gave a modification of 10 minutes to an earlier stated wait time, which was amusing. They did offer chai and mint tea while we were waiting -- much appreciated! The restaurant inside is extremely extremely dim -- probably my only gripe with the restaurant! We were shining our phone flashlights to read the menu -- that's the level of dim I am talking about. Fresh nimbu soda was very simple but refreshing. Vada pav was delicious, though a tad spicy for my taste. Tandoori Chaat as well. The Murgh Malai Tikka was melting in the mouth and the Bombay potatoes that came with it were delicious too. Chicken biryani and chicken kathi rolls were ok (though the chicken in both was again beautifully cooked). The corn on the cob was also grilled to perfection. Be aware that portion sizes were small. Ended with Malai kulfi and a Kala Khatta dessert with mascarpone cream which was the most imaginative dessert I have had at an Indian restaurant. Totally worth the wait.
Dishoom Edinburgh didn't live up to the hype for me. After two visits to Dishoom, I find the food underwhelming & the experience lacking the charm everyone raves about. Service was fine, but overall it felt overrated compared to some other Indian spots.
I was so ecstatic to see there is a Dishoom location in Edinburgh. It's been on my list for when I visit London. We were in Edinburgh for two days and we went both days. We were able to walk in for two around 3pm the first day and the second day, we waited an hour and forty minutes around 7pm. They provided us chai/limbu pani while we waited. The team is a well oiled machine, I mean they got it down to a perfect system. I love all the black/white ads and newspaper clippings and pictures on the walls. Take a few minutes to read them and you'll learn so much. The owner is from Sylhet, Bangladesh; he has a well decorated resume. The food is Bombay style! Day 1: Chilli Butter Bhutta 2/5 - corn on the cob chowpatty style, corn was undercooked Salli Boti 5/5 - braised lamb, more of a hybrid cultured dish, pretty solid and served with roomali roti which is very light and authentic (it's not naan) Murgh Malai 5/5 - tender, pieces are big House Black daal 5/5 - highly recommend, cooked for hours, the lentils hold shape visually but don't have a bite to it Chicken biryani 5/5 - topped with dried cranberries...say less, plenty of chicken pieces, this biryani was perfect. Kala Khatta shorbot 5/5 - not overly sweet, definitely gives a taste of the region Chai 5/5 - no comment except I could drink 2 gallons. Day 2: Okra fries 5/5 - great snack, not too oily, somehow the breading stays intact even though okra has water, maybe they use dehydrated okras Up to date pau bhaji 3/5 - a bit heavy, nothing special about the bread Malia Paneer 4/5 - good portion, firm paneer Mutton Pepper Fry 3/5 - this is wet based, it's under Ruby Murray who was a singer and later coined Ruby Murray Curry for rhyming purposes, they gave a lot of meat but nothing special about the fish Goan Monkfish Curry 5/5 - creamy, decadent! We packed some to bring back to the states. Kala Khatta With Nice Cream 5/5 - "To the uninitiated, the first spoonful may surprise. The second is captivating." this is exactly what my experience was, get ready to be blown away!
Hands down the best lunch I have ever had. My wife and I came for lunch because this place book up way in advance. Must have a reservation. Cool restaurant with food unlike anything I have had before. Indian inspired flavors but with such complexity it was amazing. Had the chili chicken, Monkfish curry, Chili broccoli salad half, Cole puri halwa, and Murgh Malai. The monkfish green curry was my favorite. Also had a tamarind margarita that was delicious. Ambience is fun but very nice. Best lunch I had in Scotland.
The reviews for this Indian restaurant set a high expectation. As we were visiting on a Saturday, I made a reservation, I'm glad I did as they were booked for the night. The seating area is downstairs, low lite, romantic, and smelling of delicious spices. The service was excellent. I grew up eating Indian food, but my friend did not, and our server was apt at explaining their menu. They have several cocktails they have put their twist on. We started with papadum with three chutneys. All were excellent. My friend and I shared garlic naan, monkfish curry, grilled greens, and their gunfire potatoes. Everything was amazing, perfectly seasoned and portioned. While we were full, we still ended up sharing dessert, completely worth it. This was my favorite meal we had in Scotland. I highly recommend reservations!
2025 February: they take reservations for dinner which is very recommended. Me in 2018 visiting London: everyone said I had to go to Dishoom, so I went twice on my trip. Me in 2025 visiting Edinburgh: everyone said I had to go to Dishoom, so I went on my trip (would recommend making a reservation.) Service is very good and helpful--I was going to get 1 beer and they told me to get another one (a local one that was insanely good.). Food is delicious, prices are very reasonable. Ambiance is dim light, very date-y though families and girlfriends and work people also fill the place. We loved the Broccoli salad, garlic naan, monk fish, and Edinburgh lamb special. I'll be dreaming about the monkfish.
I'm going to be up front and say it, I might only be 50% Indian, but I am 100% certain Dishoom is the best Indian restaurant in the world. This is my first time in Scotland and thus far the food does wonders for the palate. I didn't get any photos since we absolutely inhaled the food, but we ordered the papad, Pav Bhaji, chicken tikka, pepper mutton, daal makhani, and a whole mess of other dishes. The meal closed with the kneer for dessert. I had the Dishoom ipa, and would certainly recommend it. After dinner drink was the Dishoom old fashioned, because whiskey and dates is a match made in heaven. This room is a gorgeous spot to get some incredibly delicious food. For everyone interested in eating some damn good food, I recommend Dishoom.
It doesn't get much better than Dishoom! I've been to a couple in London so had to make a reservation to try this one. Menu is so good we over ordered but loved every bite. Incredible service by the staff. We had a window seat upstairs and it was the perfect treat for my parents. Cocktails were perfectly balanced and delightful. Can't wait to get back to the UK to visit again!! read more
I visited the London branch of Dishoom, and loved it so much I knew I had to go to the Edinburgh one. This one was also pretty busy, but I had no issues getting a table for one during lunch. Staff was very friendly and attentive and the food came out relatively quickly. I ordered a half plate of the salli boti. Pictures do not do this dish justice. The salli crisp chips and tender lamb make for a nice variety of textures, with such a complex and flavorful sauce/curry. I just wish they had a Dishoom here in the US! read more
This place was unbelievable. With only a couple days in Edinburgh, this was a spot we kept hearing about. I was traveling with a big group of friends, so we made decision to make a reso a day in advance. This place was poppin' at all times of the day with a line out the door and down the sidewalk. When we got there, our group was lead upstairs to the dining area, not before walking past the amazing open kitchen on the main floor. Interior design was such a vibe. Lots of dark wood, low lighting, wicker, organic materials, and tropical greenery. Bombay was definitely present. Because there were so many of us, we decided to order family style and it ended being a GREAT choice. We got to try so many dishes and literally none of them disappointed. I'm serious, none of them. Some standouts for me were the House Chaat; Chilli Chicken; Sali Boti; and Mattar Paneer. Also had to get a Mango Lassi - fruity and refreshing! TIP: definitely make a reservation in advance!! Wait times were up to 40-50 minutes for walk ins. read more
Been on my foodie bucket for...10 years..?? I've had the London location on my list for so many years but hearing they have one in Edinburgh was great news. We walked down there on a Wednesday or Thursday and the place had a line to get in. We were kind of worried but it didn't last long. First wait in line and get your name added to the queue. Then they'll let you in downstairs to The Permit Room where you have a drink or two while you wait for your table. Buzzer buzzes you when your tables ready. The food is great. So many options and tons of vegan and vegetarian options too. The only downside is that their curries don't come with rice unless you ask for it. Other than that, we celebrated our bo theater and the space - though crowded - was welcoming and beautifully decorated. Can't recommend this place enough! read more

What an amazing experience from start to finish. We were greeting outside with lovely chai tea during a wee rainstorm. Then had some of the best old fashioneds I've EVER had. Then we were taken to our table where we had the best waiter! He suggested the perfect dishes for us and we did not leave one scrap of food left. Such a fun and warm atmosphere! Will definitely be back the next time I visit Edinburgh! read more

Dishoom is as close to a perfect restaurant as you can get. Amazing food, creative theming and environment and great service. Go with an open mind, try a bunch of things on the menu (everything is great!) and enjoy yourself. Be prepared for a long wait (no reservations) but grab some tea outside if they are offering it and peruse the menu. It's a bit loud and crowded inside but you are here to eat, not to read a book! Can't wait to come back! read more

If Mary Poppins and a Mumbai street vendor had a love child, it'd be called Dishoom. The Kerjiwal eggs are so good they could negotiate peace treaties. The Bun Maska and unlimited chai? An iconic duo like Batman and Robin, but for your taste buds. The place is so well-located it feels like a reward for some good deed I don't even remember doing. It's right on St. Andrew's Square, yet somehow not swarmed with tourists snapping photos every two seconds. This spot is the epitome of well-placed serendipity. The service? More attentive than a cat spotting a laser pointer. The decor? A nostalgic nod to a time when mustaches were unironic and everyone smelled faintly of sandalwood. And the noise level? Lower than my chances of quitting this place cold turkey. read more

This place is so good. Like, so so good. I am used to American Indian food and boy oh boy was I missing out. The line moved fast but I would've waited 2 hours if I knew how good it was beforehand. Food came quick too. Loved it! read more

Having been to Dishoom in London, I had to make one stop during my trip. Very glad I did. Everything was very, very good. I think sometimes Dishoom doesn't get as much respect as it's a big, popular chain--but it's excellent. The place was mobbed on a Monday. We waited 50 minutes for our table at 9PM. There's quite the system here, and they'll set you up downstairs in the bar area so there's no idle spending time. Highlights included the chef special Salli Boti and Chicken Ruby. Highly recommend. read more

Dishoom in Edinburgh is one of the most highly reviewed restaurants on Yelp in the city, as of March 2023, they have a 5-star average rating from 182 reviews, and based on my experience here, it's easy to tell why. The quality of food and service is exceptional. It was so good I had to make sure to visit multiple times during my short trip to Edinburgh! Dishoom is a small Bombay/Mumbai-inspired chain of restaurants with many restaurants in London and a few others dotted around the UK, including locations in Birmingham, Manchester and of course this one here in Edinburgh. The restaurant is very large and is over three floors, with the kitchen on the ground level, the main restaurant area on the upper level, and the bar area on the lower floor. They do not accept reservations after 17:45 unless you are a party of six or greater, but the wait for a table generally doesn't tend to be too bad, you will be given a pager, to come back when a table is ready. I do find the fact they turn their phone lines off at this time, to be a little frustrating, as it means you're unable to call ahead and get a rough idea of the wait time. The menu and concept are pretty much the same as any Dishoom, on both occasions, I opted for my regular order. Chicken Ruby with Gunpowder Potatoes and Basmati Rice, the food is of course a little pricey but considering the quality of both the food and the service, it is something worth splurging on as a treat or special occasion. The potatoes had a slight kick and were cooked well, and the chicken ruby was spiced well and had large and generous chunks of chicken with spices, while the rice had a perfect consistency and fluffiness and was excellent when soaking up the sauce of my chicken ruby. PRO TIP: The chai is refillable until the evening, and it's always hot the combination of spices makes it great to have a couple of glasses before and after your meal, combine it with some tap water, and you'll never be thirsty. The allergen knowledge from the staff is very impressive, they have a gluten-free menu as well as an allergen folder to advise of any dishes that may be listed as a may contain. Every single staff member here works really hard and is super friendly, on my first night here, I had a wonderful lady called Gabby, we ended up chatting about my local Dishoom in Manchester, and she told me my regular server back home actually used to work in Edinburgh and they were friends - small world! On my second night, I had a male server who was also super friendly. On both occasions, nothing was too much trouble for the servers, and my water and chai were never empty. The fact they're open until 11 pm, which is later than other restaurants nearby which close between 9 pm and 10 pm is also useful for night owls like myself, my server told me they have last orders around 15-20 minutes before they close, and the staff leave when the last customers leave. There is an optional service charge, which I normally disagree with, but the service is so good here, I just couldn't take it off as they work their socks off and deserve every penny of it. It's hard to fault this place, with excellent food and excellent service, as well as a comfortable and unique interior, it is one of my favourite places to eat in Edinburgh, and this place would be first on my list when returning to Scotland and that's a five out of five in my book. read more

This place was INCREDIBLE! Definitely my favorite spot that we ate at in Edinburgh. I love Indian food but this place is about so much more than the food. It's the entire experience, service and ambience that makes it so special. We ordered so many delicious things but the black daal was definitely my favorite. They also had the best vegetable samosa that I've ever had in my entire life. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the dishes. We ordered more than we could actually eat just to try as much as possible. read more

If you're looking at this Yelp page chances are you've heard of dishoom because it's been recommended as a top restaurant in edinburgh or london. The rumors are true. We had received multiple recommendations to come here and honestly waited just because we hadn't ever gone out to eat for Indian food before. Dishoom was unanimously the favorite meal of our two week trip in the UK. I wish we would have come here more than once but we wanted to give other restaurants a fair shake also. Not knowing what to order, our server recommended the Ruby chicken and it was amazing and a perfect recommendation. The chicken as so tender it would cut with the fork, and the spice level was very flavor forward without being too spicy. I had a chai and it was delicious. Would recommend 10/10. read more

This place was so delicious! It is honestly the best restaurant we went to in the city. The food is served like little plates but don't let that fool you! Order little by little. The drinks were great and we only waited 20 min out of the projected 45. It does get busy here so just be prepared for that. The service was impeccable and the ambiance is very nice! I've been here for dinner multiple times, it is always brilliant - the black dal! This was the first time i went for breakfast (pre-covid). It was certainly different from the standard breakfast food. I particularly likely the hot drinks they had on offer. If you want something away from the traditional fry-up, this is definitely worth a go. read more

On our last night here we tried Dishoom, and it was wonderful! From the decor, to the service, to the food all were top notch. We had the Chefs Special, Salli Boti, which was the most tender lamb in a gravy, very good. We also ordered the Chicken Tikka, and the Chicken Berry Britannia Biriyani rice, both of which was as good. Our serve Babi, was so professional and friendly. If you find yourself in Edinburgh you must make time to have a meal here. read more
An authentic Indian restaurant serving Bombay cuisine. The entrance opens to the ground floor where you check in with the host and can watch the chefs cook in the open kitchen. The restaurant was surprisingly large spanning across two additional floors, and was busy when we came for our 12:30 PM Tuesday reservation. Steamed Basmati Rice or Garlic Naan can be added for an additional £3.90 to accompany the entrées. Both of these sides were fresh, with my preference leaning towards the naan. ----- Pau Bhaji: a bowl of mashed vegetables with hot, buttered, home-made buns, Chowpatty style (£6.10). The pav phaji had decent flavor from the vegetable mixture and mild in heat. The portion of curry was sufficient to accompany with the soft dinner rolls. ----- Chicken Ruby: chicken in a rich, silky makhani sauce (£13.70). The curry was rich and light in spiciness. Chicken was tender but not juicy. Note the spices are still in the curry before you accidentally bite into them. ----- House Black Daal: cooked over 24 hours for extra harmony (£7.90). Legumes had a soft consistency, good to pair with naan or rice. ----- A 12.5% service charge is added onto the bill. I was not that fond of the smell of incense, but the sticks are mostly burned by the entrances and hallways, so does not waft much to the dining area. read more
Delicious food and great service. There was a little wait but the bar area and drinks were great. Okra fries were delicious! Pav bhaji was a little spicy but had great flavor. The potatoes and paneer were delicious. I would order all of this again. read more
Okay so my husband and I just returned from a 10 day trip to the UK. And we both agree that we had our best meal here!!! We enjoyed our dinner so much we had to go back the next morning for a quick breakfast before a tour. Let's get back to dinner. We had such a hard time deciding what to order because it all looked so good. Since we didn't make a reservation we had to wait a bit and was pleasantly surprised when they took us to the bar area. As a teetotaler, I was happy to see they had a special menu for me and I couldn't resist trying their jazzed up version of pina colada - hands down it is the best I've ever had. We tried to ask them how to make it but it's pretty complicated but I'm just glad I got to have it. Now on to the food, every dish was packed with flavor. I grew up in Malaysia and we have good Indian food, though mostly Southern Indian. And this is up there for me in terms of quality and flavor. Even though all the food we got was great, the one that stands out to me is the Salli Boti - braised tender lamb. Oh my gosh it was fall apart in your mouth tender. And the flavors were soooo good. The chicken ruby was described similar to butter chicken and it was nice though it was a little bit sweeter than expected - still very good though. Even something as simple as vegetables was done well. Anyway we went back the next morning to try their breakfast and I loved the bacon and egg naan roll I got. I was expecting plain ol' bacon and egg but the chutney inside added much depth of flavor. Finally, we have to mention the chai. I have had chai and this is up there for me as well. We loved it so much we bought it back so we can try and replicate it. Although I have a feeling it won't quite be the same. If we're ever back in Edinburgh, we will be going back!! read more
Probably the highlight of my trip to Edinburgh. We came here almost directly from the airport while running on like 2 hours of sleep, because I was so excited to try it. First, the atmosphere is absolutely adorable. I felt totally transported. We opted for a wide variety of things, starting with the okra fingers which were perfectly crispy and possible the best okra I've ever had (and that's saying a lot as a person from the South of the US). We followed with the house chaat (Warm-cold, sweet-tangy, moreish. Golden-fried sweet potato covered with cool yoghurt, pomegranate, beetroot, radish and carrot. Tamarind drizzle and green chutney lift it nicely) which was absolutely delightful. You could taste each individual flavor but they all came together so harmoniously. 10/10 you gotta try this. We then split an order of their famous house black daal (A Dishoom signature dish -- dark, rich, deeply flavoured. It is cooked over 24 hours for extra harmony) which that alone was worth the trip! Unlike any other dal I've had before. For an entree, we split the Chicken Ruby (Tender chicken in a rich, silky makhani sauce. A good and proper curry redolent with spice and flavour.) which was a hit but i definitely recommend getting it with a side of rice. For drinks, we went with the bottomless chai option. You can choose between the house chai or the chocolate chai (and go back and forth when getting refills) and I have to say I was super impressed by the chocolate chai. The service was also fantastic. Our waiter was super friendly and helpful, although we did have a couple of funny mix ups bc of my American accent and having to wear masks (I asked for a side of rice and he brought me a cup of ice... we all had a good laugh). If you get a chance, definitely try Dishoom!! read more

Since my friend and I enjoyed Dishoom so much, we decided to return for dinner to try the rest of their menu. We started off with the Okra Fries (£4.70) and Prawn Koliwada (£6.70), both very delicious and great options. For the rest of our dishes, we had the half portion of Sali Boti (£11.90), Black Daal (£6.50), Chicken Ruby (£10.90), and Cheese Naan (£3.90). Next time, I would leave out the Black Daal as this was a vegetarian dish, so contained all beans. The sauce had good flavor, but the beans were overwhelming, especially because I am not the biggest fan of beans either. On the other hand, the Chicken Ruby and Sali Boti were absolutely amazing --spicy and well seasoned. I highly recommend both if you're want a variety of chicken and lamb in your dishes. Throughout our meal, we each had two glasses of House Chai (£2.90), which ended up being charged by glass. Little did I know, the house chai is not unlimited after 5pm. I was a little disappointed because I am truly obsessed with the house chai here, which makes me more likely to come back before 5pm just for that! Go ahead and revert back to my first review of this place for their breakfast naan and house chai and it will be all you need. Nonetheless, amazing food with the best house chai --yum! read more
