As a homeowner, we think about what we're willing to pay and think about options that would give us the biggest bang for our buck. So I shopped around and got quotes from 3 painting companies altogether. Distinctive colors being the last one of the 3 - saving the best for last. During my initial consultation with Steve, he gave us a thorough walk-through, providing his thoughts and feedback about what can be done with the repairs. He pointed out all the flaws that needed attention. From top to bottom and around the corner, he included my pool deck in the backyard. With how bad of a shape the deck appeared to be, I was prepared to knock it all down and replace it with a new set of wood, which probably would've cost me twice the amount. Instead, he recommended giving it a facelift which I'm glad I went with. His transparency, knowledge and insight compelled me to work with him. The best part was receiving the most reasonable and affordable quote the following day, considering all the repairs that had to be done. The reviews were accurate and very spot on. 5 stars all the way.. and that's only starting with Steve. The contractors - Pancho, David, Kurt, Castro- worked tirelessly prepping, repairing cracked stucco, and wood from water damage, and then moving into painting the entire house.. making it seem so effortless. After the recent tropical storm, it was clear that we need rain gutters. This forced us to really look at the roof and fascia of our home, which is new construction. We were surprised to realize that the paint on the fascia was so thin, we could see through it. Then we noticed a neighbors' home, which is only 9 months old, had chipping and peeling paint on their fascia. We knew that we needed to have our fascia painted before we had rain gutters installed. I contacted Steve at Distinctive Colors Painting, hoping that he would be willing to take on a job this small. Not only did he answer the phone right away, he was able to stop by our home later that day. I immediately felt comfortable with Steve. He was friendly, easy-going, and very honest; I asked him if we should paint the eaves in addition to the fascia, and he said that they didn't need it as much as the fascia. Steve quoted a very reasonable price, so I asked to be put on the schedule. The day of the job, Kurt (the painter) arrived on time and quickly got down to business. He worked very hard for many hours, caulking all gaps and cracks and applying two coats of paint to the fascia. The fascia now looks great, but more importantly, we know it is protected and much less susceptible to problems like rotting. My wife and I had a small flood in our house and we hired a local cabinetmaker to build cabinets. Once the cabinets were in we needed someone to stain them and match the rest of our house. We have nice looking maple cabinets and we were worried that it would be difficult for someone to stain them and make it look consistent. We called around several different companies and received a few different quotes Steve stomp came to our house and by far has the best pricing. He was also very friendly and explained exactly what the job would entail. When it came time for the work to be done he sent his employee Josh to do the work. Josh was in my house almost 12 hours doing the job - he was friendly personable and was happy to answer my questions about what he was doing and how the repairs will take place. He did a Great job masking off the kitchen to make sure he only stained my wood and didn't mess up my walls or my tile or anything else. I had a few other spots in my kitchen where my cabinets were worn down and Josh was nice enough to touch those spots up - of my doors looked horrible and by the time Josh finished working on it I swear it looks like a brand-new door. Steve and Josh were great to work with. Only negative is we had to wait two months to get them to do the job that's how far out they are booked - obviously the reason is because they do good work in a fair price! I started painting the outside of my house myself, I thought I was doing an OK job until I got to having to work from the ladder and I realized I was over my head. So I got down defeated and started looking around for a good local painter. I tried to tackle the job myself because I've found most contractors to not treat people well. I called on a Sunday expecting to leave a voicemail, however Steve answered the phone and setup an appointment for the following Tuesday. To my surprise he he showed up and on time. Within a few minutes he had a quote for me. His crew showed up, Eric and Josh, they were polite, smiling and worked hard. Got what was originally anticipated a 3 day job knocked out in 2 days and made it look good. I'm happy, it's done. There were details about their work that made me feel that they actually cared about my house. I would definitely call them again for future work. Their office staff even communicated well, the day they were supposed to start it was raining, I was going to call them, but they actually called me first to give me a heads up it would be delayed by a day. Do not make the same mistake we made by hiring this "company" to paint anything in your home. It was the worst experience I've ever had with a contractor/trade hire and we remodeled our entire home so we experienced MANY. This is the most incompetent and unprofessional company available to hire for painting of any kind... it was the first hiring we did with our remodel so I did not know what I know now or I would never have hired them in the first place, but I definitely learned a lot from the nightmare experience with distinctive colors. I still get sick to my stomach thinking about it all even though I waited over a year to write this review. I'll just dive right in and try not to turn this review into 3 pages because it would take no effort to do so. 1) look at the pictures I attached showing the quality of work they did in our home. They speak for themselves and if anyone hires them after seeing their real work then best of luck. 2)The owner, Steve, is beyond unorganized, unprepared, unprofessional, and constantly complains about his clients to his employees in front of other clients. He was constantly screaming at someone on the phone or in person in our home. He treated his employees horribly and was a nightmare to deal with as he constantly made scheduling errors and tried to blame his never ending mistakes back on us or his employees. Chaos to say the least. 3)we paid a premium price to have a high end paint used and specifically discussed with Steve before we signed a contract that it had to be the specific brand and no substitutions. I saw the 5 gallon paint buckets left in the garage after the first night with clear labels of the vista paint mixed to the color I chose in the other brand. Attached a picture of this as well. When I asked him why he was using the cheaper paint he lied AGAIN and said he couldn't get the Benjamin Moore paint in the color I wanted so the next day I drove to the same paint store and bought a can of the paint within five minutes. This is just one example of his repeated dishonesty. 4) we paid to have some cabinets doors changed to glass fronts. He continued to "forget to order" the glass and kept telling us he had and he would get them installed the next week. Well, He never ordered them and we gave up trying to get him to make right of it and fired him at some point in the process of fighting with him about it for weeks. 5) when we hired DC the contract said 5-7 days total for the work to be completed. 1 Month and 10 days later they were not even half done! NIGHTMARE. We could not use our kitchen for TWO WEEKS, and they used the wrong paint color in the 1 of 10 rooms they had finished. 6) Steve sprayed toxic lacquer paint while my 2 year old son was home with me despite me specifically telling him they could not paint until I left with my son. It was another day he was pretending to fix the bubbling paint on the cabinets that was never fixed. This was weeks of living in destruction from them jumping from one room to the next and never completing any of the rooms so nothing could be put away creating complete chaos throughout our home. We had our fridge in our entryway for two weeks and could not use the kitchen or 3/4 of the home due to the mess. THIS WAS A PAINTING CONTRACT. They were not tearing down walls or putting new floors or new electrical or plumbing in.... they were simply supposed to paint and somehow capable of wreaking havoc in our lives for a month and a half only for us to have to hire another company to actually paint our home and redo the cabinets because they did such a horrible job. I could go on and on, but my blood boils just writing this thinking about it all again. In summary, there are excellent company's in this area who are do excellent work with paint and lacquering cabinets so run away as fast as you can if you ever come in contact with distinctive colors. It is unacceptable for any person or company to treat a family with such disrespect and behave the way they did in our home. read more

I hired Steve and his crew to paint my brand new 4200 square foot home, while I went on vacation. I left a color splotch in every room to show Steve the color that I wanted the rooms painted. Steve years ago was a quality painter that took pride in his work. Recently I tried them again and my experience has been a nightmare. The quality of paint job is poor, the help is young inexperienced kids for the most part, they do not do what they say they are going to do when they say they will do it. The follow-thru is non existent and Steve has an attitude that the customer is only the Friday payday and he chases from one job to another. He attempts to add additional charges to his quote that are way out of line for the work that is done. I would not recommend Steve or Distinctive Colors.
