Consistently a bad store. As a UW student, there are an insane amount of issues: - items in wrong location (wrong price as result) - "new items" without a price tag (after weeks!) - insane markups (up to %150 to Safeway) - horrible return policy (takes 15 minutes on paper!) - staff that clearly don't want to do their job - receipts are never offered, I always ask - bags can't hold over 2-3 lbs before ripping - any hot/prepared food is often dangerous If you aren't a UW student with a required "dining" plan, steer clear.... please. If you are a UW student... I'd recommend always checking the price of something comparable on the Safeway app, sticking up for incorrect pricing at the register, and generally advocating for an abolishment of this "dining" plan. read more

This is a very nice and clean market. Medium size with a wide variety of items and I imagine it will only be growing as there was still some empty shelves. I was impressed by the variety of Asian food items including frozen pot stickers. This place really has everything in one spot from food and drinks to home/kitchen/bathroom supplies to cold medicine, and even a small selection of office/school supplies. They clearly went overboard on some items such as the sheer variety of bread/bakery goods and ice cream. I think they could probably have instead offered more frozen/refrigerated food and/or canned goods. I am sure this place is very convenient for staff and especially students. I was a bit disappointed with the prices as it was on par with everything being sold at the UWMC cafeteria and gift shop. You'd think that because it is an actual market vs. a small eatery in a medical facility that they'd be able to offer better prices. But I saw a pre-packaged thai sandwich going for about $7.50 which was the same price as a sandwich I bought from Lobby Espresso at the UWMC (and that was not including tax). Similarly, the small bags of chips and string cheese were seemingly the exact same price as what was being sold at the UWMC. Bottom line, this is a convenient place for students living on campus or if you need to grab some last minute items. Otherwise, if you have a car, save some money and go to a real grocery store. read more

By happenstance in the UW vicinity, I'd wanted a snack fix late and searched up this place. It's a nice good corner location, rather spacious and diverse for any snacking needs. You can opt for the more common stuff with loaded processing, naturally loaded processed and both with less processed. The damage: --An Odwalla Chai Vanilla protein drink (since when did they have chai? where have *I* been?!). This is pretty nice but I do slightly prefer Bolthouse's Vanilla Chai's consistency. --A microwaveable tofu coconut curry rice entree. As someone who does not have a dining plan, I must say DM is not at its most affordable range for us broke college students. However, it does have a great amount of convenience and opens til 1AM on most days which make my late night studying at Odegaard a lot more manageable. If you have a small appetite like I do, you can actually save money eating at DM vs eating on the Ave if you pick the right things. 8 oz cup of soup (which can actually fill me up), is $3-4, which is about half the price of an average entree on the Ave. I really like the chicken bisque and the salmon chowder! I always feel bad when I eat on the ave since I can't finish the larger portions. I must say... I would recommend their freshly prepared or local brand foods (since many can be out of reach within UD) but wouldn't recommend buying most of the processed foods, which you can get at Safeway for much cheaper and is a single bus ride away. read more

Seems like a pretty nice small market, and it's located extremely conveniently next to campus. I was able to buy a razor and shaving cream from their small toiletries section, and saw other people shopping their minimalist home goods section. I will check out their other supplies and be back with more info! Friendly female cashier, too. Update: I love this place! Further inspection (and several more trips) have endeared DM to me. They have: - fresh organic herbs (limited stock - they were out of basil once but had it when I returned) - delicious to-go items from their deli counter, like the curry chicken (yum yum yum please make it more often!!) and the tuna - half-loaves of bread from Essential Bakery, which is perfect for a solo-dweller like myself, cause it's often hard to go through a full loaf before it gets stale They don't have certified organic milk :( but they do have all-natural, hormone-free milk from grass-fed cows from a local dairy, Twinbrook Creamery. The student staff are always friendly and efficient, and the location is convenient in relation to the UW campus and west campus dorms. They have a large selection of convenience food, snacks, and a decent selection of fresh produce and freezer items. They also carry a range of household cleaners and kitchen items. There is a coffee shop and a deli counter, so you can pop in to get lunch. However, their prices are outrageously high- boxes of Oreos are over $5, and milk is nearly $3/quart. read more

The man "Waheed" was incredibly rude when I asked if there would be more bacon available that morning, he replied and said "I don't have time to make this for you, if it's empty it's empty", the question was if it would be available, not if you have time to make it? If your bus is running late you should really really pop in here for a snack. Bright, clean, well organized and so damn cute inside you may wonder if you have stepped into a TV set grocer instead of an actual mini grocery store. It is almost bizarre how ~nice~ it is inside here. Higher quality goods, anything last minute a college student may need im sure. But seriously. If you are here in the morning, march right to the back deli area and buy the BEST damn breakfast sandwich you have ever had in a long long time. Everything is made fresh -- eggs cracked and fried next to your sausage patty that gets placed on your freshly toasted english muffin topped with melty cheese. No joke -- I wish I had bought 3 of those suckers by the time I finished the sandwich and my bus was rolling up. It was that freaking good. So I guess if I am busing it early in the AM in the U District I have a go-to shop for breakfast. read more

I swear this place has some sort of cloaking device. It's been open since September, but somehow I only noticed it a few weeks ago. On my first visit, I took a quick walk around the place. It's more of a convenience store than a full-sized supermarket, but it has most of the staples, and a decent selection of produce. I was pleased to see their fresh meat and seafood counter; Safeway's pre-packed stuff can be a little hit-or-miss. The flat iron steak ($10/lb) looked good, and there was a surprising selection of fish and shellfish. Is this targeted at dorm-dwellers? I'm not sure who's buying all this stuff. They also have a deli counter, and a selection of pre-made sandwiches and snacks (Blue C Sushi's chirashi for $8 or so). I tried one of the deli counter's breakfast sandwiches, and it was pretty much what you'd expect. I also tried one of the pre-made bagel sandwiches, with smoked salmon, capers, vegetables, and cream cheese ($7ish). Not bad, for convenience food. The coffee counter was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting yet another HFS-run Tully's, but this place is run like an independent coffee shop (but, you know, cheaper). They told me they roast their own beans, and brew them as espresso drinks, ready-brewed drip, pour-over, and toddy cold brew. The ready-brew and espresso were both several notches above the chain coffee places, though this place isn't going to compete with the likes of Herkimer and Trabant. For the pour-over, they offered me a few single-origin options, brewed on a Hario V60. It was the worst of the three cups, because the lone barista had to divide her attention between brewing the coffee and taking other people's orders. I'll have to come back when they're less busy and give it another shot. They also sell bags of single-origin beans for a few bucks less than other local roasters. read more

Came here for lunch a couple of times in between classes. Super clean and lots of fresh produce. The grab-and-go foods are really good! I had the spanakopita which is a greek spinich pie. Great deal at 2 for $3.99. I also tried their mac salad, potato salad, and a roast beef sandwich which I recommend as well. The District Market gets mixed reviews from me that when taken together puts them at 3/3.5 stars. Here's how it all shakes out: 5 stars for convenience. I work in the UDistrict and often ride the bus. This store is part of Housing and Food Services for the UW and connected to one of the new dorms and has a heavy traffic bus stop right out front, so it really caters to students and the community. 5 stars for the design and layout of the store. The facility itself is bright, modern, clean, and stellar-ly designed. You wouldn't know you were on campus if they didn't tell you. Bravo! 4 stars for inventory. They've got just about everything you could want, but because of the size, you may not get as much brand variety as you want. They have prepared foods, actual groceries, housewares, coffee shop, and meat counter (which is more than I can say for Trader Joe's...yeah, I went there). 4 for the service. Most people who work there are really friendly and helpful. Where they lose me: 2 stars for the prices. They are really high since you won't find many sales. If these guys are catering to students and others in this community, they have to be able to compare a least somewhat to nearby Safeway on necessities. Just saying. When I add that all together, (giving extra weight to the price issue) they get 3 stars. (I'd give them 3.5 if that were possible.) It's a great option when you're in a pinch or feeling lazy, but until their prices are more comparable, I'll have to take issue. Clearly, I've got to try the breakfast sandwiches based on the other reviews...maybe that will push them to 4 stars in an update. Only time and my taste buds will tell. read more

District Market opened up recently after renovations in the building it is in. It's connected to a coffee shop, so you can stop in and get your typical coffee, latte, scone, pastry, or other coffee shop item. In addition, if you need something more substantial for lunch to take with you, there is an attached food location. It's larger and has much more selection than a typical convenience mart. It has fresh product, not a grocery store selection, but a good selection for taking home and cooking or taking with and eating. It has grocery store prices which is to say these are the prices you would pay for these items in the Safeway, QFC, Albertson's, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, PCC, or other food store. I was surprised at the good selection for all dietary types. You can find food for gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, and traditional-style eaters, without looking too hard. It's clean, they open extra registers when the line is long, and the food has a quick turnover. It's clearly a popular spot. I recommend this stop if you are heading into the U for work or class and need to pick up something to snack on, breakfast, or lunch. read more

I stayed in the Alder Hall dorm at University of Washington for a conference this summer. Throw back to my college days! This market is on the first floor of Alder Hall. It is a wonderful market that is equal parts grocery store, coffee shop, convenience store, and restaurant. This is a great place to swing by for a snack or meal. I stopped by every morning to get tea and a muffin for breakfast. Their bulk candy section is fabulous and actually wasn't too expensive (yogurt pretzels anyone?). They have a small selection of fresh produce, and a number of quick meal options. I wouldn't recommend District Market as a replacement for going to the grocery store or Target - the prices are much too high for that!! read more

District Market at Alder Hall is a bittersweet experience. As a West campus resident at UW, the convenience of the DM is unmatched. But the ridiculous prices neutralize the convenience factor. Be prepared for your wallet to be cleaned out buying pretty basic items. The DM does boast a pretty good selection for a small grocery store. There are hot foods, which are very tasty, and even a meat counter. The Husky Grind espresso inside is pretty good as well. The workers at the DM are primarily students and most do a good job and are very courteous. Even when it gets packed around meal times, the line at the check out stands moves pretty swiftly. But, again, the prices are ridiculous and unforgivable! read more

This place is absurdly overpriced! Over five bucks for a box of Wheat Thins. Ten bucks for a pizza. My friend got supplies to make dinner and spent over forty bucks. It's really absurd. If there were any other large markets in the area this place would go out of business overnight. It's only successful because it's close to the freshman dorms. There's no service of which to speak - the employees are either stocking the shelves or ringing you up. I recently went here to buy a few things with a friend. The clerk rang me up and I was about to pay when I overheard that they weren't accepting credit cards due to system maintenance. I stopped by District Market while visiting the UW campus and found it to be a very convenient place for college students to get groceries, general supplies, or a quick meal. Wish their café section opened at 6 am instead of 7am! The food is really good and fresh with nice vegan (I'm not vegan but their vegan but I like their vegan food) options too BuT it is expensive. I still go once in awhile to buy fresh food when I don't want to cook at home. The market is too pricey for me so I don't do grocery shopping here. BTW their soups are delicious! Wish they would cater a little more to Latin cuisines. read more

The location is really convenient so can't complain about the price sometimes. I commute and it's right by my bus stop that I get off at, and it's too hard to resist a cup of coffee in the morning sometimes, My sister now dorms at Alder so we go here a lot. What we really love is the selection of Asian food! I can't believe HFS has some Japanese drinks and snacks. it's amazing that they'd have natto and kimchi and so many noodle brands. The deli section is not bad either; I love their soup for a quick meal. I love how the cafe has 8oz size. read more

The store's location near a major bus interchange can't be beat. I'm a commuter, not a student & I often pop in for milk or vegetables. This would've been nice in 2011 when I actually lived in the Cedar Apartments a few blocks away. However, they didn't. Now I live about a fifteen minute bus ride from campus. This place is pretty convenient, even for me, because often after class I think of something I need from the store but all of the stores are inconveniently located away from the bus stop. I'll pop in here for a thing or two and leave. I would never do all of my shopping here as the prices are rather ridiculous for many things, such as milk which is outrageously priced here. I'd give it a one or two based on prices, but a five for convenience! I tried the cafe inside of this store recently, The Husky Grind, I believe it's called. I tried a chai latte which I've noticed are often made horribly at all school affiliated cafes, but something possessed me to order it anyway. I think they all use the Oregon Chai concentrate stuff in a box and it's just too flipping sweet. It was insane because the beverage itself looked really pale like there was a heavy amount of milk but the sweetness was just overwhelming. I ended up dumping it out. read more

Very clean and organized. It's designed for UW students who live in the west campus dorms to buy groceries. When I lived in the dorm above it (Alder Hall) my freshmen year, I went here every day, often multiple times a day since I found this place was by far a healthier option than most other dorm food. However, make note that with the convenience of location comes with a price. Many students complain about how overpriced everything is. Some produce and cereal are marked up by close to 1.5x when compared to Trader Joes or Safeway. In general, I would not recommend going here routinely to buy your groceries if you're not dorming. read more

An UW grocery store in one of the residence halls that sells almost everything from fresh fruits to hot food. Prices of local products are relatively low, however, some branded products that are well known can be more costly than other grocery stores. Some products are tax-free to UW students with dining accounts as well. There's also a coffee shop in the store called "Husky Grind" which is satisfactory for a moderate price. read more
