I go here twice a week for lunch--the food is tasty and good quality--yes, it's expensive, but also you're at a Met Market, so what do you expect? Every time I go there, something that always strikes me is how many staff they have--I feel like I'll see seven or eight in the hot fifteen minutes I spend buying my little sandwich. I would think that because they're fully staffed, that would make for a decent work environment, but based on the expressions on all the employees, that is most certainly not the case. Nearly everyone looks miserable, and visibly annoyed when a customer has the audacity to move past them to grab something off the shelf or gasp! Dare to ask them a question. I get it, we're all trying to do our jobs and get our groceries, but a little understanding goes a long way. This is an extremely expensive store with limited options. They participate in a food waste reduction program and fail to uphold their side of the bargain. Drove 40 min and waited in line for another 12 for them to tell us they did not have in stock what we paid for. No apology and no effort to make it right. I never thought I'd be told i needed a cookie in Seattle. On Sunday afternoon the bartender at Atlas Sports across the street gave me a bite of hers and i needed my own. Service was quick and i only missed a few minutes of the game running over between commercials. The baker let me know it's chocolate chip and walnut and not just chocolate chip which first discouraged me but it was amazing! Cookies were sitting on a hot pan so no worry of having to eat one not freshly hot and made. This cookie is rich in chocolate, so rich the bartender told me she needs to take breaks to finish it. It's also huge and a meal in itself. The stomach ache after having that and lunch was definitely worth it. if I could give a zero I would. Beware the people in the bakery don't know the difference in a lemon cake and a chocolate cake. My guest were all looking forward to eating a lemon cake tonight from this store. when I opened it up it was clearly chocolate. on top of that, it was a $38 cake. when I went to checkout I commented on how expensive the lemon cake was. the cashier told me if I wanted a cheaper cake go to Fred Meyer. I was insulted. The checker was the most arrogant checker I have ever had. What kind of person would say that to a customer that paid $333 for groceries? the arrogance of Seattle was so typical. Metropolitan Market is like a Whole Foods except really local. You can literally walk to it as there are many houses and a bus stop right by it. Convenience is likely a bringer of the customers here as well as those whose wallets have a bit of bulge. Temporarily staying here really drove home the convenience if food or beer was needed. What gets me though is Metro's competitors - QFC, Safeway etc. are just plain cheaper, even when things aren't on sale at those stores, they're still cheaper than Metro. It's no secret. I'm pretty frugal when it comes to grocery shopping and don't like to use excess cash for everyday needs so seeing these prices as I go up and down the aisles just froze me. Speaking of aisles I found them to be rather cramped, which isn't only unique to here but, this is a nice looking and sizable store so this hurts it. Also the cart return isn't great here unless I missed something. To it's credit, the staff seem really nice and the florist department looks good and they have other little perks for example, you can take specific amounts of eggs that come from a local farm in case you don't want a full or even a half a dozen. Still though, unless you have a penchant for the posh I'd stick to the everyday supermarkets unless there something specific calling you here. read more

The grocery store itself is one of those overpriced grocery stores, but the biggest complaint would have to be the bakery/coffee shop. The people that work there are some of the rudest people I've known and take their time to make the drinks. The coffee as well is nasty to a point McDonald's does a better job with their coffee. The hot breakfast items are also nothing I would want to eat as well to the point the sausage is still raw when I got it. Way back when pre-Yelp, when I lived on Queen Anne and in Ravenna, it was a culinary pleasure to occasionally shop at Metropolitan Market. Late this rainy Saturday afternoon, I turned strategic shopper but exercised restraint at the Hawthorne Hills/Sand Point location (12/14/19). I wandered the perimeter without a basket or cart, and only clockwise to prevent random purchases, took various photos of this, that, and the other thing. If only I was in the holiday entertaining mindset...I digress. Cue the Jaws theme song. Like a shark sensing blood, this former professional baker was detecting fresh baked cookie scent. Finally, coming full circle around the store, I finally located The Cookie. Yes, this Yelper and known Cookie Monster is late to the party regarding The Cookie. I ask and pay for 4 of these monstrous freshly baked lovelies ($2.99/each). Each one placed in its own bag, then all carefully arranged in a signature tote. I still had other errands to run, so The Cookies remained on the front passenger seat for 90 minutes. Brilliant The Cookie car fresheners! Finally got home, but before I could photograph all four...one got hoovered by The Homie. Finally with a cold glass of milk, I too tried and devoured The Cookie. OMG. Amazing that 90 minutes later, The Cookie remained still freshly baked warm! That is one absolutely decadent rich AF chocolate chip cookie. They have a coupon for buy-one-get-one free halibut. And they are not honoring them. A staff person told me that the fishing was unsafe for halibut fishermen, they are not able to go out on their boats. A quick news check shows no dangerous fishing right now for halibut fishermen. I've heard a lot of great things about these stores, mostly that they're really awesome for lunch, but I've never been in one until now. They weren't even on my radar at the time, but I drove past and decided that I must stop and check it out! I can see why people call this a great place for lunch! Self serve was shut down due to the current climate of the world, but they had employees actually working on cooking/baking all the goods and dishing them out. Black truffle potato chips? Oh yes, I need those. As a grocery store, they're pretty okay. I was able to find a few items that I've never seen before, and I paid premium for them. I don't know if I'd come back for the regular grocery store aspect, but the fresh made items for lunch? Definitely would come back for their offerings! read more

It's hard to believe, but Metropolitan Market manages to stand out among Seattle's bougiest supermarkets. It manages to out-bougie Whole Foods and Town & Country, which is no small feat. What's disappointing is how incredibly brusque the morning coffee bar workers are at this particular location. Today, for example, I managed to greet, purchase and pay for my items this morning, all without eliciting a single word from the sales associate. No "good morning", no "thank you"--nothing. I've gotten my AM pastry from this location for years, and the coffee bar associates never fail to astound me with their consistently disdainful demeanor. They truly seem to hate their job, or hate the customers--or both. And in case readers want to flame me for picking on the coffee bar associates, the Metropolitan Market cashiers are, by comparison, incredibly efficient, warm and perky at 7:15 in the morning. This little mama piggy loves this market! Big papa piggy thinks it's a bit expensive compared to other grocery stores. Duh! Papa piggy just don't get the can of Spam here! "The Cookie" is a pretty decent chocolate chip cookie but I would say it is over rated and the best cookie in the world is probably still Hope's Cheescake "Royale" cookie. The "magic" of "The Cookie" is that they serve it well heated which makes it especially ooey gooey melted chocolate goodness. I was really disappointed that that they had shut down serving coffee here by the time I arrived so while I was able to get "The Cookie" I ended up having to hike about 2 miles to find any coffee being served. The Metropolitan Market had a nice selection of all sorts of other groceries and it was a nice place overall other than failing to have coffee when I was in dire need of it to wash down "The Cookie" and even a bit of milk might have been nice except I needed my caffeine. read more

I've shop at this MM store since it opened in the early 2000. Historically I've always enjoyed shopping here. Unfortunately, my past two visit experiences were very off putting primarily by two different (male, female) cashiers. I'm at loss for words to describe what I felt like other than being disrespected and made embarrassed. Both individuals were off putting, ie the male cashier seemed bothered by my question about the cost of a product, responding by telling me in a curt, impatient manner and tone "it's on the receipt!" The female cashier was curt as well but with a smirk of a smile and a verbal tone that was condescending, very passive aggressive, even when I acknowledged and apologized for my mistake on a product. What happened to customer services, hospitality or just plan respectful of customers. In neither occasion was I short, impatient etc. These experiences have made decide that it'll be awhile before I return to this particular MM establishment. I will seriously consider an alternative MM site as this isn't the only one. Customer Services especially interpersonal interaction is highly needed, staff need to be in touch with themselves when interacting with the public especially customers of their establishment. This review is strictly for THE COOKIE in the Met Market bakery. After multiple coworkers and patients of mine said this was THE best cookie ever, ya know I had to eat one. One of our patients has raved about it for weeks, and brought in some for us to try! And they were still warm. Mmmmmmm.. So y'all. This is seriously one of THE best cookies I've ever had. It was gooey on the inside, and the chocolate chips were all melt-y. The bottom layer was crispy, and it tasted like they added some salt to the outside! When I saw that sweet sweet Carr Valley 4 year aged I realized my mental health is much more tied up in cheese than I initially thought. Wandered the sailed for far too long, and what was initially a quick milk run turned into a full on shopping trip. Walked out with what amounted to $100 of dairy, bread, and a cute coffee mug. Late nite adventures one evening! Nothing like cruising the aisles, reading labels, listening to overhead elevator/old school music, and exploring with nary a crowd nor clutter of customers as distractions. Chillin' & strollin' at the market. Aisle by aisle. I discovered, once again, more products & brands I've never seen before. (Suh-weet!). Various domestic, maybe a few international, but more super local stuff. The produce is solid with organic aplenty; I got me some of my favorite sweet potatoes for steaming & baking. The household section has (what looks to be increasingly standard) lots of clean, natural, non-toxic cleaners, soaps, etc. I was also pleasantly happy to find more cool new candles to try; local, vegan wax, and my kinda scents. Late nite crew is chill & friendly. With the restrooms closed that late, they let me use a sink behind the flower counter to wash my hands when they got a bit sticky from touching a leaky package in the fridge section. read more

I looked through some of the reviews here and I wholeheartedly agree. The chocolate chip cookie here is absolutely amazing. Also since I have down time thanks to the world essentially shutting down, why not catch up on reviews. The absolute best I've ever had was in Vegas, at the airport at the American Express Centurion Lounge, I took like 2-3 to eat as a snack while waiting for the plane, and they were so good I ended up wrapping 5 more to bring home. They were crispy, but airy. It wasn't break your teeth hard, but it was hard enough to hold itself together but not too hard to remain crispy and delicious and I am still looking for it to this day. What is the point? Metropolitan Market takes the place of top 5, maybe even top 3. And the crazy thing was that I was visiting my friend who is in Seattle for school and after dinner he and a friend had a sudden urge for the cookie. I remain skeptical of a lot of stuff, especially when it comes to supermarket bakery and hot foods. I've been bamboozled by Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl wayyyyy too many times to the point where I've just given up buying stuff like that from there. But no. My friend was adamant of this cookie so off we went. After a rather sketch McDonald's run for coffee at like 9pm at night (not my idea, and who drinks coffee at 9pm, don't people need sleep?), we were off to the market. As we pulled up it was raining as Seattle should, and we quickly ran in. I got to say, this market is super nice, clean and organized. We quickly found the cookies and my friends started looking through the stash while I stood back baffled at what they were doing. Apparently it was to look for ones that have a chocolate chip center, or what looked to be more chocolate chunks inside the cookie. They found 3, one for each of us and we also ended up grabbing some Haagen dazs strawberry ice cream to go along with it. The employee who rung us up was super friendly, but baffled as to why the 3 of us was fighting to pay. Anyway, we get back to my hotel and we start a movie and I grabbed my cookie and took a bite. And I was super happy. It was soft and chocolatey and gooey. Super delicious cookie. Oh lord why am I writing this, makes me want to fly back to Seattle just to buy it. This grocery store is probably the cleanest in Seattle. They are pricey, but it is worth the money. They have generous coupons that they give out, and they have a top notch deli, bakery, sushi bar, barista, meat counter, salad bar. Their food is always fresh, and they have a nice dining area on the second floor where you can trash/recycle/compost. They also have nice bathrooms. One of the highlights is when you walk in, you get to see their gorgeous flower display. They also have a nice home goods section. And cheese samples! I have been a customer for 10+ years. Outstanding service each and every time. PLUS they just went through a renovation. They outdo themselves as much as they can. read more

Quaint. That is how I would describe this Metropolitan Market. It is in Sand Point and thus has the feel of a neighborhood market rather than a big chain grocery. It is a bit smaller than the Metropolitan in lower Queen Anne, but don't hold that against this location. It has some charm and I kind of like that it is away from the hustle and bustle. While the Metropolitan in lower Queen Anne appears to be cavernous, this location seems very compact. I still can find many of the interesting items here, but it is like they squished everything into a smaller space. There all the essentials here as well as cheese, deli, bakery/coffee and meat/seafood counters Prices at Metropolitan can vary from being good to being very expensive, but this has more to with products they carry. Overall, I like this Metropolitan for its ambiance and neighborhood grocery feel. read more

This place has everything! The coffee shop is top notch and I also enjoy the sandwich section. They're bake shop is also pretty great (try the petit four!). What I really appreciate is the next level produce section- their produce is far superior to any other grocer in my area. To top it all off, they have a great selection of local beers. There was a time this was a great store and worth 20% plus premium you pay on every day items. But. Their sandwiches used to be made with baguettes and not hoagie rolls from subway. Croissants from Swartz Bros cost like croissants and are artfully made to look like croissants but taste and texture are like stale dinner rolls from Safeway. While on the pricey side, these decadent chocolate chip cookies were worth every cent (and calorie). They are always served warm and have the perfect gooey consistency. The serving size is huge, so you are sure to be left satisfied. And while I do not usually enjoy nuts in my cookies, these walnuts added a perfect crunchy and savory component to each bite. You can also pay for the cookies right at the bakery counter, so there is no need to wait in a second line.
