El Cerviche De Waldito? There is no sign. But thank goodness it still showed up on Yelp and I saw the sign for Puerto Rican, Cuban & Peruvian food. My friends wanted to share their favorite restaurant with me and I'm so glad they ordered because I can't figure out most of the menu. If you ask them, they will definitely make recommendations on their daily specials. Lunch buffet is easy- dinner is a little harder :-) Hole-in-the-walls are the best. And for good reason. They are usually started from scratch with sweat, blood and tears. You can taste the passion in their dishes. Waldo and his wife started off as a catering business and just expanded into a restaurant a year ago and are going strong. It's definitely a two person show so be patient and go when it's slow...you'll get to spend time with him and maybe he'll share his stories with you. Please note that this business is listed several times- three, the last time I checked. This is probably to prevent you from seeing the mostly-negative reviews posted on all the others, but hey, make your own call. I got a groupon for this place and tried going no less than six times, but they were never open and had the worst customer service possible- I'd call and they'd tell me they'd be open the next day, but I'd drive up DURING THEIR POSTED HOURS, and they were closed. When I called back, they always blamed their catering business and how they had events on weekends that would take precedence. Well, maybe your regulars don't mind driving up to a closed restaurant, but I sure do. Like I said, called and came by repeatedly in a three month span, and never once was I apologized to or helped in any way- there was always an excuse. From those who have actually had the food, it sounds delicious. I just wish this place were run like a business and not like someone's pet project. read more

My mother and I went to Cebiche de Waldito's this afternoon, using our Groupon deal (which they happily accommodated, no issues/attitude!) First off, this is a VERY small little restaurant. There are eight tables and two were pushed together today for a family. We had gone last night but they were totally full. Waldito, the chef, runs this restaurant with his wife. It appears to be a two person operation. Waldito is the only chef, so if ordering off the menu please be patient and understand your food will take a little longer than other restaurants, especially if it's busy. To the food! We started off with a ceviche de piscado appetizer. Woah! It came with char-grilled yams, onions, corn, cilantro, pickled onions and extra lime sauce. Not overly fishy and super fresh. We followed with fried yucca fritters which again, great presentation! The yucca same paired with a tomato/onion salad, hardboiled eggs, calamata olives and two hot sauces (a red and a cream) for the yucca. This was the best yucca I've eevvvveeerrr had! Waldito cooked it so it was crispy on the outside but moist on the inside with amazing flavors. There was also a bed of mint leaves that paired well. AMAZING! For our entrees we split the arroz mixto and piscado de macho. The fried rice was amazing with flavor, truly a delight! You will not be disappointed! It has bits of meat and veggies with a Caribbean taste. The fish was quite good *talapia* served with six shrimp in a tomato lightly spicy cream sauce, fried plantains, pickled onions, more yam, veggies and rice. Fish was flavorful and the sauce took it to the next level. The sauces are so amazing here... anyone can grill a piece of fish or meat....but bringing these great flavors is a trick Waldito has mastered. During the eating of our main course Chef Waldito came and sat down with us *a first, but welcomed!* and shared his story how he has cooked for various five star hotels in New York city, LA, Miami, Atlanta, Pheonix and here in San Antonio. He decided that he wanted to see people enjoy his food and he loves his restaurant and the patrons. The ceviche is normally $10, the yucca I believe is $8, the arroz and piscado are $12 each so a $42 bill was summed up to a $22 Groupon. We left a $10 tip as we'd both thoroughly enjoyed the meal, service and company. We took two to go boxes and as we were headed out the door, Chef Waldito came and gave both my mom and myself little calendars advertising his restaurant. He gave each of us a hug on kiss on the cheek, thanking us and wishing my mother safe travels home. Someone commented that the owner was overly friendly/eager....I think that's truly who he is. He loves what he does and wants to know the people who he's cooking for and get their feedback. Waldito also caters private events and cooks any cuisine you like, of course he specializes in various latin/Caribbean flavors. I enjoyed this meal so much, I'll post my pictures soon. The restaurant is also called El Ceviche de Waldito, while the catering service is Divine Taste. I visited with friends on a weekday for lunch and the place was a bit busy, they were also handling take out at the same time. The food is amazing; coming from Florida it was hard to find good Cuban and Puerto Rican food in Texas and I was delighted to have this option. The rice and red beans as well as the plantains had a familiar, comforting flavor while the flan had surprising and pleasing hints of coconut. Unlike most buffets the food felt personal, like something my mother would have cooked and served me, though that may have been in part because the chef/owner served us at the buffet. That is one downside, however; the restaurant is small and there was quite the line at lunch and the wait did somewhat defeat the reason many people choose buffet. Chef Castro never skimped on portions, however, and came to speak with our table while we were eating and encouraged us to try more and explained a bit about some of the dishes. Our waitress was also very friendly and personable, though seemed a bit busy dealing with tables and to go orders. There is a menu and they will make anything off it if you don't want to have the buffet, you just have to ask to see it. This was delicious! It was flavorful and the owner was super eager and friendly. Maybe a little too friendly, as I've never had to shake someone's hand upon entering a restaurant, but I thought it was sweet hot enthusiastic he was. We went for lunch, and it was an all-you-can-eat buffet. The owner spooned the food onto your plate for you. Everything we was quite tasty, although the deserts were just okay. Divine Taste is a small mom and pop place that has an awesome and cheap lunch buffet ($6.99 from 11am -3pm daily). We went on a weekend and it was pretty much empty but we've heard that it gets packed during the work week. I wouldn't recommend going with a large party because the restaurant only has 8 4-top tables and the buffet is pretty small. Pros: good soup, awesome pork roast, and excellent service (the owner will come out and chat with you to make sure you're happy) Cons: not much of a selection and lack of presentation Who can really complain about paying $6.99 for a very satisfying meal? read more

Friendly service and excellent food. It's good to be able to get good Cuban and Puerto Rican food in the city. The short ribs and roast pork were delicious, as were the Peruvian tamales. And all-you-can-eat fried plaintains? Aww yeah! Even the frijoles negros and rice were delicious. The food is delicious and homemade. The pork roast is especially scrumptious. This restaurant is a must try if you are in the San Antonio area. OK...having never been to Cuba, I fell in love with the Cuban Sandwhich in Miami and have missed it on MORE than one ocassion. Flying back from Aruba we actually made sure we had long enough a layover at the Miami Airport to ensure we had time for a great cuban sandwhich....but just found the BEST EVER AT El Ceviche De Waldito's!!! He catered a party for us last night, and bringing back the trays/bowls, etc to him today, decided to try the Cuban Sandwhich....OMG!!! Yes he is very talkative and will sit down and enjoy a chat when possible again a first for the many with their busy life of eat n go. Second time here, really liked it the first time but fell in love today when we walked in and there was this beautiful hugh pork shank that had been roasted where the skin is that thin crispy oh so good. Took a friend from Puerto Rico who said all she had to do was close her eyes and she was there. Small, wonderful, this is the locals we really want to support. I went for the first to have lunch with my husband on Monday 17 Oct 2011. We enjoyed the buffet for the great price of $6.99 which included, among many choices, arroz con gandules, tostones, maduros, peruvian tamales (which are EXCELLENT), and pernil. It was so delicious we brought 17 friends on Saturday 22 Oct. I called in advance to let Chef Waldo know I would be bringing a large diverse latin party. He not only went out of his way to accomodate us, he made us all feel like family. He was able to modify the buffet to apease all of our tastebuds. All of my friends were amazed with the excellent service, divine food, and awesome hospitality. We have definitely found a new place to enjoy our native comfort food. The food is excellent. It is hard to find good Puerto Rican and Ecuadorian food in San Antonio but this is the place to go. First, the food is fresh. Second, the food is plentiful. Third, the service is excellent. The owner and chef is engaging a very welcoming as is the support staff. I have eaten there at lunch many times. The roast pork is excellent. It has a balance of garlic, salt, citrus, and spice that is very delicious. The arroz con gandules (rice & pigeon peas) is wonderful. Combine those with excellent tostones and mojo de ajo and it transports me back to NYC and the small family run luncheonettes that dot the city (especially Manny's on 10th Avenue). Found this "hole-in-the-wall" place thanks to Groupon and it's got very good Peruvian dishes. The chef was very welcoming (we got there early due to a Spurs game afterwards) so we were treated like VIPs. My favorite was the tamale wrapped in banana leaves. Check it out!! read more

Crappy food. You can tell they use leftovers from the day before when they make food for the day. Seems like air conditioner is always broken too. They use very poor quality meat (lots of fatty pieces). Owner seems like nice person, he tries real hard , but obviously not hard enough.
