This was my first time trying Peruvian food - or at least my first time having it in San Antonio. I was a little hesitant at first, but the photos of Machu Picchu drew me in and convinced me to give it a try. I ordered a dish with French fries, thick-cut steak, vegetables, and a flavorful sauce served over everything. It was absolutely delicious and honestly exceeded my expectations. I've had a similar dish in New York before, so being able to enjoy it again in San Antonio with such authentic flavors was a real treat. We dined in, and my party had a wonderful conversation with the staff. The service was exceptional and went above and beyond what we could have asked for. I've been driving past Machu Picchu Peruvian Grill on Bandera Road for awhile, saying to my family that I've never had Peruvian food & wanted to try it one day. Today was that day The family ordered beef Empanadas, Beef Chaufa (beef fried rice), Tallarin Saltado, half a pollo à la brasa with fries, fried Yucca, and a side salad. We all shared & there was so much food that it will be lunch tomorrow because the portions are generous! As my first experience, I cannot talk about authenticity, but the flavors were amazing. I absolutely love Peruvian food. Brought the kiddos along to this one, and they both fell in love. Affordable, great portions, and wonderful service! Couldn't ask for a better meal to close a not so good week. I feel a great meal, with great company can lift your spirits. Man I needed it. Where do we begin. The Inca Cola was awesome. We don't normally drink soda, but the very sweet older gentleman taking our order recommended it. Even the diet one was great. There were other drinks available, and they will even bring you samples if you're not sure! We had Chaufe de Pollo, Bistec a lo pobre, and Tallarin verde. Each plate, even the simple ones, was simply well executed. I will start with the Tallarin Verde. The meat was tender, and the pasta was cooked al dente. It's not quite Italian pesto, and leans a bit more to chimichuri. Not a bad thing, but it worked so well! The beef was slightly under seasoned. Just a tad. The chaufa de pollo, is labeled as fried rice. You think like chinsese fried rice. Yes and no. Just like the amazing fried rice at Himalaya, it's different enough to be appreciated. It had a more toasted flavor, and not as greasy. Great flavor too. It's great when mixed with the surprising star of the meal. The aji verde sauce. We had to order more three times. It's semi sweet and cooling, but with a kick that builds up. Mixed with the rice, and on top of all the meals, leveled up all the dishes. Not ashamed to say we bought some of the sauce to take home. The last dish was just a simple dish executed to perfection. The egg was just right, and cut the yolk on the steak and wow! Can't say it any better. None of us are fans of fried plantain, but we loved it here. I don't know what they did different, here it was the best we've had. The fries were better than normal. The gripes, because no place is perfect... The plain white rice they served on the bistec a lo pobre, was just plain white rice. I mean it added nothing to the dish. She also gave us a sample of the most popular drinks the Chicha Morada and the passion fruit drink which were both great. We ordered a Empanadas de Carne and it was super moist and tasty! Wen only wished the pork was cut or chopped into smaller pieces. Our entrees were the Aji de Galina A Spicy creamy chicken, shredded in a creamy yellow pepper sauce. This was my first experience with Peruvian food! Having seen rave reviews of the Lomo Saltado, my friends ordered that and the Tallarin Saltado with chicken to share amongst the three of us. It was just the right amount of food - and it was delicious! Both dishes had an obvious tinge of saltiness to them, but it wasn't overpowering. The noodles in the Tallarin Saltado were more like pasta noodles so I would definitely call it a pasta stir-fry - how interesting is that! The person managing the counter also took our orders and was very courteous and friendly with his suggestions - we got the maracuya (a passion fruit drink) upon his recommendation and it was very refreshing on a hot July afternoon, also pairing really well with the food. My first choice was El Rocoto, but apparently they've been closed down since December 2021. Darn. Found this place as a Plan B. The size of the space is perfect. The wall art is a little random. There is a small shelf behind the counter with some retail food items to bring home. We ordered the ceviche for an appetizer. Price was $16.99. My son enjoyed it. I'm simply not a fan of Peruvian ceviche but although the red onion isn't marinated, it was still a refreshing touch. I'll never understand how sweet potato is supposed to complement raw fish. Never. For entrees, I chose the Bistec a lo probre. The beef was tough and the only knife they give you is a butter knife. The French Fried potatoes were fresh and crisp! Otherwise, not much flavor to this meal. The kid ordered the Chaufa con pollo. He enjoyed it. Again, flavor was absent. The only flavor I could taste was soy sauce. What boggles the mind is that this place doesn't have a beverage menu so had to ask if they had Chicha Morada and Muracaya. They do! I ordered both and found them both to be satisfactory. I asked for Alfajores for dessert, but they were out. Overall, this place is a good find for those seeking nearby Peruvian. This place was hoppin mid week for a late lunch. Lots of indoor tables for seating. My fam ordered the lunch special- Polla Saltado with Inca colas $9.99 It came beautifully plated- the fries were nice and crispy, chicken was moist, tomatoes were lovely. Flavorful broth, but very salty. The salt was overwhelming, but mixed with the rice, it eased it up. I must say I am super disappointed. The meal consisted of cut up pan fried chicken breast, red onions, 1/4 slices of tomato, and wrinkled French fries. It was all submerged in watered down teriyaki sauce with a side of dry white rice. Again I am not to familiar with the cuisine but, for $12.00 I expected much more. This is by far the best Peruvian restaurant in San Antonio. The food is authentic and delicious, the service is fast and friendly. The amount of food is good enough for one person and the price of the food is adequate, compared to other places. This is definitely quality food. Staff was friendly; the chef came out and said hi to a few patrons. I asked the waitress a few questions about some dishes I thought I'd like to try. I settled on the Aji de Galina - spicy creamy chicken ( my dish could have had more chicken, a little sparse) The sauce was spicy/ creamy not the chicken as the write up said. I was looking for something different to try and this place popped up as a suggestion and had a great rating. The pictures of the food looked really good so I decided to stop in for lunch. The place is not clearing visible from the road (intersection of Bandera/Huebner) but since I live in that area I knew it had to be part of the retail strip. The server working that day was extremely friendly and provided helpful tips about the menu. I decided to go with the daily special, the pollo adobado. While I was waiting for my dish, one of the owners, Maria, came by and started to talk with me and give me a history of the restaurant and her Peruvian roots. She also told me that her husband is the chef/owner and that although he is actually Guatemalan, he has perfected the Peruvian cooking techniques. Maria also mentioned that there is a strong Asian influence in Peru that has influenced the local cuisine. For example, Peruvian dishes use soy sauce, noodles, rice and woks in many cases. Nice tidbit of history. The order came with a side salad and that came out first. It was a simple salad with a very tasting ranch type dressing. Next, my server brought out the main dish and it was well plated and looked appetizing. The chicken was juicy and the sauce was very similar to a Mexican mole sauce just a not as thick. The side of white rice was light and fluffy and paired well with the chicken. Very tasty overall and a good value for the price. Since then, I have returned two more times over a two week period. The second time I came was during lunch and I ordered the tallarin saltado de carne and it was delicious (see pic). Steak strips grilled with onions, tomatoes and served over a bed of pasta. The dish was well seasoned and hit the spot. The third time I came was for dinner and this time I really got adventurous. I started off with the ceviche as an appetizer and the sudado de pescado for my main course. When the ceviche came out the portion size was large and could easily serve 2-3 people (see pic). The ceviche came with a two sides of white Peruvian corn, one steamed and the other roasted, and two slices of sweet potato. Lastly, there was shot glass full of a lime based juice that I poured over the ceviche. I ate with some crackers and it was delicious. I had to leave room for the main course so I ended taking some home. The main course was a steamed fish fillet topped with onions, tomatoes and cilantro served with a side of white rice and fried yucca. The fish was flaky and nice seasoned. The white rice really soaks up the seasoning and is a solid companion to all the dishes it is served with. Overall, all three visits could be summed up like this: this place takes simple dishes and elevates them by using fresh ingredients and great seasoning to give you something that is pleasing to the palate and very healthy. I definitely look forward to returning and this time trying the tamales and empanadas. P.S. There is a light green salsa provided with each dish that is very flavorful but has a bite to it so be careful not to overuse if you don't like heat. A little goes a long way. read more

My son and I tried to eat here several times, but kept hitting it when it was closed for all kinds of reasons that just don't seem to matter any more. Some things are worth waiting on. Macchu Picchu is one of them. However, we won't be waiting anymore. This is destined to be another of our repeat offenders on the culinary scene. I almost don't know how to approach this review without sounding like a befuddled nincompoop. Everything we tried was wonderful. We experienced flavors that we did not know and flavors that we recognized but had to struggle to remember where we knew them from. Being "just fell off the turnip truck" new to Peruvian food, we asked the server (I believe she is the owner, as well) to help us out. We ordered Ceviche de Pescado, Anticuchos, Tallarin Saltado de Carne, and Aji de Gallina. We also ordered glasses of Chicha Morada. The Anticuchos were grilled strips of beef heart on skewers. They were heavily seasoned and grilled perfectly. The little container of spicy chile paste that came with them knocked it out of the park. My mom cooked beef heart many different ways when I was growing up. It always had an "irony" taste. This did not. It could have been strips of prime tenderloin. The Ceviche was also great. There was so much of it piled on the plate. The lime juice and whatever the other seasonings where exploded on my tongue, and the red onion made it even better. I asked for a spoon so I could taste the Sangre de Tigre (ala Mark Weins) by itself. It was such an amazing flavor experience that I could drink it by the cup. I really liked the freshness of the fish. When I eat ceviche at Mexican restaurants in town, the fish is often lost in jalapenos and tomato chunks. This was just chunks of fish and thinly sliced red onions. The Tallarin Saltado de Carne could also be called Peruvian Lo Mein. But, man did they fine tune it in Peru! The pieces of beef in it were perfectly grilled. You could taste the fire, What blew me away was the flavor of the sauce. It was a blend of spices that created flavors totally new to me. Jared squirted some of the green sauce they put on the table in one of those catsup squirt container. It was such an amazing addition to the already powerful flavors, that I actually squirted some on my spoon to taste it. All I can say is, "Wow!" I'll be looking for bottles of that. Okay... This is going to sound crazy, but I just can't help it. The Aji de Gallina was super delicious. I couldn't place the taste. Then, after eating several bites, I realized what it was. It tasted like something my mother used to make all the time when I was growing up. She didn't have a name for it. It was just a creamed chicken dish she made to serve over rice. I know now that she made it to stretch out the tiny bit of chicken and feed all of us with it. I wonder if that is what some Peruvain mama was trying to do. Anyway you look at it, it is delicious and very filling. The Chicha Morado was a real surprise for me. I expected to taste something like the juice in a can of corn. Nope. I kept sipping it and trying to figure out where I knew the taste from. I had to force myself to slow down with it, because the flavor was tantalizing. Then it hit me. I was tasting a strong blend of cloves and cinnamon. It was like drinking a piece of my mother's minced meat pie! I loved it. Like I said at the start of all of this, some things are worth waiting for. But, don't wait. Get to Macchu Picchu ASAP! read more

Next, the fries and rice are supposed to be incorporated into the dish, not tossed in in the side. Lastly, the sauce on the lotado should tie the whole dish together, and it didn't. Nothing special on the inside just a few little pieces of Peruvian art. The waitress inside was very sweet and informative. I got the most popular dish which was number one.
