I recently moved to the area and noticed there is not a city collection for compost. Knowing there…read morewas a robust urban garden community here, surely there was composting services. After some googling, I found Midtown and loved their business model so I signed up. It's $16 a month plus a $5 start up fee and in exchange, I get a 5lb bucket to put compost items in, it gets picked up weekly and replaced with a clean bucket. In addition, I get a few buckets of finished compost in April or May, which will be perfect as that is the perfect time to start my own little garden. If you don't want your finished compost you can donate it to a community garden of your choice. Though I've only been a customer for a couple weeks, I'm thoroughly impressed. I signed up late on a Tuesday night and my new bucket was on my porch THE NEXT MORNING! I feel serious hippie-guilt if I have to throw away anything compostable so this was brilliant. And I put my bucket out the following Tuesday night and by Wednesday midday, I had a fresh bucket waiting on the porch. Excellent service so far and I'm glad to be supporting a small business and the environment at the same time.

I have left probably 6 voicemails, I have also emailed 10 or so times. Have not heard one word back. I will now have to go and close down my bank account and open a new one because I don't want to be charged for a service I am not receiving.

Pretty Orwellian name for what everybody calls the Detroit Incinerator. Built in 1986, it's like a…read moregiant everlasting cigarette that burns garbage and sends nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, lead and other carcinogens into the air. Most unfortunate for my lungs that I happen to live in the same zip code as this monstrosity. The wafting stench from the Incinerator isn't as noxious and nostril crinkling this time of the year as in, say July when it can be pervasively repulsive from miles away, but I doubt it's any healthier to live near it when it's cold. Found in violation of numerous environmental violations, the owners of Detroit's Eternal Garbage Fire signed a deal where within 2 years they'll retrofit the smokestack with technology to make it less unhealthy and uncomfortable to live near. The giant garbage cigarette is getting a giant filter. They're also to pay $350,000 in damages, which I'm sure is nothing but a slap on the wrist to them. So maybe in 2 years or so, the Detroit Incinerator might not be so bad. Who knows, it might even bump it up to 2 stars. Friggin godawful thing!
