I highly recommend scheduling an appointment online or even giving the DMV a call beforehand. It saves so much time and makes the process very smooth. They only allow check-in 10 minutes prior to your appointment, no earlier. I arrived 15 minutes early, checked in 10 mins before my appointment time, and waited an additional 10-15 minutes. Overall, the entire process took about 30 minutes, which wasn't bad at all! The employees helping us were very fast and friendly. I witnessed many elderly people having trouble with no one around to help so I took it upon myself to help them out because the security guard out at the front--instead of helping, she was raising her voice and patronizing those who were having trouble with accessing the application. I had a negative experience taking my behind the wheel test at the Pasadena DMV that completely ruined my driving confidence. I heard the Arleta DMV was better so I scheduled an appointment here. Night and day difference!! The people inside behind the counter are very efficient and the driving examiners are amazing, especially Brian! He reminded me take deep breaths, struck up conversations, and was very positive throughout which kept me very at ease. I am an extremely anxious test taker and he made it feel like a normal drive. I had practiced this DMV's route with an instructor for a whole week beforehand. Took my first behind the wheel test here with Alex. Like 30 secs in I attempted to turn right on a red light and he grabbed the wheel to swerve, claiming I was about to hit an oncoming car. He ended the test, scribbled a few notes, and then rushed out of the car. It's been like four months, and I still can't remember there being any oncoming car. Regardless, it was an awful first experience, and he terrified me so badly it's discouraged me from even thinking about reattempting for a few years at the very least. No appointment? No problem -- early arrival is key!!! I agree, at times it can be a hassle, but I've gone both with an appointment and, like today, without one. Honestly, it's all about timing. I arrived at 6:15 AM and waited in the car line for the gate to open. Once it did, everyone rushed to park and get in the actual line. I was 7th in line. They only handle Real ID applicants from 7:00 to 7:40 AM. Promptly at 8 AM, I was inside. The front desk attendant was pleasant, and I got my number. I waited about 15 minutes for it to be called. The next attendant was also very helpful, and we were done! I still need to return to complete my paperwork, but I already set up an appointment for that. No one wants to wake up early, but if you don't have an appointment, it's BEST to arrive early so you don't end up waiting longer than necessary. read more

My parents recently went in trying to renew their ID and to their surprise, they had to do it online not in person. They no longer have paper applications... that being said they require you to scan a QR code. Please fix ur printer ink so your QR codes work properly. I'm a disabled veteran. I went in to get my DV plates and registration waiver or whatever it's called. I get to the gal to get my number. She's looking at my forms. She confirms with the other lady that the letter from the VA is accepted, it is. I get my number and sit down. Waiting almost an hour I finally get called to window 22. The lady there is just outright RUDE (Unfortunately I didn't get her name as I was too pissed off to ask for it or ask for a supervisor to explain further). She asked for the medical certification form from my doctor. I told her I had a letter from the VA that I was told was acceptable. On the REG256 form section 3, the instructions state the following: In order to qualify for exempt registration benefits for one vehicle and disabled veterans license plates, an eligible disabled veteran must submit the following to the DMV: 1. A copy of proof of true full name and DOB (used my DL, no issue there). 2. ONE of the following required documentation: a) The medical certification below (section 4) completed and signed by one of the medical professionals indicated. b) A certification completed and signed by a COUNTY VETERANS SERCVICE OFFICER THAT CERTIFIES THE APPLICATNT IS A DISABLED VETERAN AS DESCERIBED IN CA VEHICLE CODE 295.7 (Could be one option I say I chose) c) A certification completed and signed by an authorized representative of the Dept of VA (CalVet) that certifies the applicant is a disabled veteran as described.... OPTION I COULD SAY I CHOSE d) A certification completed and signed by an authorized representative of the US DVA that certifies..... This is the ACTUAL option I chose. The form says ONE of those options were required NOT option A AND another option. I qualify, the lady at the DMV was just being LAZY because it was the end of the day! I'm sorry that I have to work for a living, too! I can't just live off the disability from the VA. I have a family to support! read more

Upon entering this DMV there is a "no appointment" line and an "appointment" line. The two ladies who were working today in that area are absolutely rude. My drivers license was stolen and I asked if it was possible to take a new photo along with renewing my drivers license. The first lady said I wouldn't be able to take a photo. I went back in my car and found out that indeed I was able to take a new photo. I went back inside and the second lady rudely rejected me as well. This all would have been a lot better if they were kind throughout the process but they were SO RUDE. ZERO customer service skills. I drove all the way to Glendale and waited two hours. And can I just say, I would wait double the time in Glendale for the customer service I received. Upon entering, at the window, and at the photo area. EVERY ONE WAS SO KIND.
