The process of trying to make an appointment online, you first need to fill out an application. Once we arrived at the DMV, the lady security guard was keeping the lines in check. There are 2 lines, one for appointments only and the other for walk-ins. In terms with people with appointments, they are very strict on time frames. So if you show up 15-20 minutes early for your appointment, they will skip you until your appointment time. If you state that your appointment is 5-10 minutes earlier than your actual appointment, you make line inside, they will tell you to take a seat and wait until you are within 2 minutes of your appointment. The best DMV experience in my life! When I finished an appointment I knew I had to come to the DMV to finish paperwork regarding my car registration so I went on the website and I "got in line." I was 17 in line before I started driving and when I parked 10 minutes later I was already only 7 in line. That was so fast. Parking is plentiful and I thought because it's Monday that it would be empty inside however upon entering I was shocked to see how crowded it was. So many people that there was only one chair to sit and multiple people were standing. Despite this, numbers were being called fast and within only 5 minutes my number was called and I went to my window. I had been researching online and I thought there's more forms to fill out but I didn't know what to fill, but the nice gentleman who assisted me said nope he was inputting everything I needed now, then he printed my new registration and I was literally finished in maybe 3 minutes! So in total from getting in line to stepping out of the DMV was only about 25 minutes for me! I really appreciate the kind staff who helped me and how efficient they were. I would definitely come back to this location if I need anything else in the future! read more

Tip: Come early (before 10:00am) for less lines. No appointment? Save time and scan QR code on wall to get queued up. Otherwise, you might need to wait another 15-30 minutes just to be told to do so. Expect attitude here, too... :/ - - - - - - Oh, the inconveniences of going to DMV... this location reminds me of home, with entrances / exits that aren't the most convenient versus street side. No visit to the DMV is complete without a fair share of business hours that test your vision (quite literally size 6 font) - so easy to miss! Signs mention that we can't renew our licenses here, but then... we can if we do an appointment online? The online system doesn't load appointment times properly sometimes, too. I came for a walk-in at 9:50am. As a tip, try and get here before 10:00am and the "rush" because if you find a nice quiet pocket, it's actually a somewhat pleasant experience with a wait ~ 30-45 minutes. Other than the short speak and general attitude / moodiness of all the staff, the queue seemed to move quick based on intercom. There's lines for appointment and no appointment... and you'll be here for a bit. The space itself was also fairly difficult to navigate. No seating room other than outside, and all the staff are situated in the middle, taking up most of the building space. There is a bit of parking, though during busy hours, I could imagine that this would be filled. read more

This is the worst Customer Service that I ever had at a DMV office To get through them is impossible and when I ask a phone call back through text messages took 30 minutes to get a phone call back and when they called me back, it was closing time at 5 PM. I took my behind the wheel drivers license test here. The first time I failed, & not gonna lie I got tricked into doing an automatic fail (making an unprotected left hand turn), the instructor told me to just go. But...on the other hand, it was my fault for listening. I should have known the law well enough not to do that, and to drive correctly, and for that I'm glad they failed me because there are too many bad drivers who don't know the law well enough when they get their license. I like how harsh they are on their grading, and for this I practiced extra hard and passed on my second try here. Love the van nuys dmv. Don't let the reviews intimidate you. Just be on top of your game, and drive as correctly as possible, and you will do just fine. read more

On February 13, 2026 at approximately 11:00 AM, my daughter took her behind-the-wheel driving test at this DMV with examiner Charles. Upon entering the vehicle, the examiner immediately began rushing her to proceed forward and directed an immediate right turn while a pedestrian was actively crossing the intersection. My daughter proceeded cautiously and completed the turn correctly without incident. Despite this, the examiner claimed she had gone over the curb (which did not occur) and abruptly failed her for that reason. The examiner's actions appeared unprofessional, including unnecessary rushing from the start of the test, providing an inaccurate failure justification, and creating a high-pressure environment that may have contributed to unnecessary stress. I am concerned this conduct was biased or discriminatory (potentially related to race/ethnicity), though I have no direct evidence beyond the rushed and seemingly unjustified failure. I request an investigation into this examiner's behavior, review of the test circumstances (if any records or notes exist), and appropriate disciplinary action if misconduct is confirmed. My daughter would like a fair retest opportunity. read more

I would leave 0 stars if I could. I took my behind the wheel test this afternoon at 1 pm April 1st, at this DMV. I was going to turn right at a light when a driver decided to pull some illegal turns and moves, and if I hadn't reacted in time and the way I did, we would have crashed. But instead of recognizing the fact I was able to act quickly under pressure and make a good decision in a split second, my tester failed me for a "dangerous maneuver" and blamed the encounter on me "not yielding to traffic" as if I hadn't waited behind the light and checked both ways for also an entire minute. If you decide to go to the DMV and take your behind the wheel test and your tester is Michael, drive yourself out of that parking lot immediately. Never coming here again, if you ever need a good DMV, visit Winnetka instead. read more

I made an appointment beforehand and was in and out in under 25 minutes. I only had to wait outside before actually entering the building - and inside there was no wait at all. I had to come here recently to renew my driver's license because it had expired. I had to take the Knowledge Test again which is their written test. I would have to say I was dreading my visit to come here because overall in my lifetime of experiences at any DMV growing up its always been a drag. But I have to say the staff here at this Van Nuys location are pleasant and helpful. There is an older staff member with white hair that is always extremely helpful. He is usually at the front gate of the counter that all people with appointments or not have to go through. He's the one that assigns you the correct window to go to for the service that you need. I am very appreciative that he has always been very helpful. Some pointers BEFORE visiting: -MUST MAKE APPOINTMENT!!! for all services that they allow you to do so (This will save you SOOOOOO MUCH TIME!) -As recent as of this week, you MUST APPLY for ALL APPLICATIONS ONLINE ***BEFORE*** YOU PHYSICALLY GO INTO THEIR OFFICE. They might even turn you away. -PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to the services that they DO NOT OFFER in PERSON IN THE OFFICE ANYMORE to AVOID WASTING your time going in -If you DON'T HAVE AN APPOINTMENT - Go EARLY to get in line first thing in the morning. They open at 8am but their was already a line that started wrapping around the building starting at 7:30am. Go early! Finally, come with all the necessary documents they request of you to verify the proof of your identity and any additional documents to support that. read more

Came in to swap out my AZ license for a CA Real ID. The easiest DMV experience since I first got my permit at 17. I made an appointment months ago, but it was worth the wait. I was in and out within an hour or so. Incredibly nice employees; I wish I'd gotten their names, but I had a fun chat with the gentleman helping me out and his female coworker. I arrived at 7:23 am and stood in the non-appointment line, which already had ten people in it. A couple minutes later, an employee came outside with a tablet to talk to everyone in line. Since I had already registered online for a real ID, I had a confirmation number and my necessary documents (birth certificate, dental insurance bill, and W-2 form). I showed the employee my confirmation number and told him that I had my documents. He asked if I had an appointment. Since I did not, he told me to just wait in line like I was doing. Others were told to either form another line or get their documents for the real ID. When the DMV opened at 8 am, the lines moved inside. I was still in the non-appointment line until another employee with a tablet spoke to everyone in the line individually. Since I showed my confirmation number, the employee asked for my cell phone number. Then she told me that I would receive a text message and that I could take a seat. When I received the text message, I clicked on the link, which showed that I was sixth in line. About five minutes later, my number was called and I was able to get through the process of applying for my real ID. I was done at 8:17 am. It probably helped to use the DMV website first, but with the employees using tablets to assist customers, things seemed to move quickly. read more

I don't think it can actually recommend any DMV office. I was sent home with clear instructions about paperwork I needed from the lienholder on my car. I was at this DMV person's desk for 30 minutes. She sent me away with erroneous information. I now have to go back. I need to speak to a manager. I called the DMV helpline and that's what I was instructed to do. I would not recommend his office. Arrived at 8:40 AM on a Thursday, for an 8:50 AM appointment to have my license renewed to the new RealID standard. Raining outside, we were held at the door by Security. Upon entry, about five minutes later, we were given poor directions as to where to go next for appointments. After that, the line was fairly quick. I was assigned a number, and I waited to be called. Not surprising had an absolute BS experience at the California DMV Van Nuys location. Got there before it opened to get a good place in line, when our number came up the guy refused to help us finish filling out the form (which was not straight forward) and told us to come back after we took the stab at the answers. When we came back (literally 5 mins later) he said he had to go into a meeting and we had to go to the back of the line (which by then was 50 deep). What an "%#£*+~#" The DMV sucks ....I know, tell us something we don't know. read more

Make an appointment and save some time, but the Van Nuys DMV is one I recommend with shorter lines and wait times. I applied for a Real ID driver's license and submitted all my documents online, including my passport card. It was a lot easier than I expected. Once verified you go in with the same documents you verified online and the process is just a few minutes. Take a new photo at Camera 1 and you're on your way. The parking lot is very spacious and easy to navigate. The pre-check in/start here counter is outdoors, which is very helpful and they'll assign you a number depending on your business at the DMV. They do have some kiosk for simple registration, etc. as well as a lot of services online that no longer require an in-person visit. I do wish the camera line or even parts of the inside had arrows or floor sign/stickers to guide you when lines do form to keep up with distancing and avoid any confusion. They did give two people the same number at one point while I was here, but other than a few small bumps I definitely recommend for your Department of Motor Vehicle needs. Lots of great information about, a well spaced out written testing facility and plenty of seating both indoors and some outdoors as well. Open 5 days a week! They use to be open on Saturdays, hopefully they will again in the future. read more

"It's the DMV" is a punchline in many jokes. But I gotta tell you, if you make an appointment online, and go in with a pleasant attitude toward the folks who work there, you'll find it can be a fairly quick visit. If you go in without an appointment, you'll be there for a few (6?) hours simply because of the volume of business they get. And, you probably won't be in a pleasant mood because of the wait/crowd/etc. I had to renew my DL. About 30 days before my license expired, I made an appointment with the Department of Motor Vehicles. I got an appointment three days before it expired. I arrived about 10 minutes early and I WAS IN AND OUT IN 20 MINUTES! And I had a very pleasant experience...considering it's the DMV. read more

I expressed to her that I am 7 months pregnant and have come in to get a temporary handicap pass and she said it doesn't matter to wait in the line. I was assigned to window 9, today. The lady at window 9 gets all the heat from people walking by with their concerns since she's right in front. She was very professional and kept her cool, remaining kind as she tried to explain to the upset woman what she needed to do. Anyway, she was very clear, kind, and efficient with what I needed. I left with my day made, thank you! I got there at 9:15a with no appointment and left at 10:30a. There was a man who got there at 8a with an dl renewal and still is waiting though so it varies I suppose depending on what you're there for. I had an in office required reg renewal, so I'm not sure why he is still there waiting since he got there over an hour before me. read more

I know when you think of DMV you wouldn't typically think 5 STARS right? Well, that's certainly not the case, if you do it right. I'd been dreading this whole Real ID thing and the deadline (obviously pushed back now, but the original deadline) I figured why wasn't my passport plenty enough proof but anyways I had an April appointment that was canceled last minute due to Covid. I received an email a couple of weeks ago with a rescheduled appointment. Kudos to the proactive approach on DMVs part right there, and not just leaving it up to us to figure it out. I did have an 815A Soul Cycle class I needed to cancel because I understand I really needed to take care of business before riding a bike this AM. My appointment was scheduled for 9A. I arrived at 857A and the non appointment line was insane. The appointment line however, was quite pleasant and SHORT. I hopped right in, and within minutes they were calling me up, checking my documents (my son was able to upload these online, but I brought all of mine today passport, social, pay check stub, gas bill, dwp bill, appointment number code from online application in addition to my recent DL renewal form that was mailed to me). These docs were checked and I was handed a little green card with a number on it. Everything ran so smoothly! I was in, in no time, and called immediately. Everything is being cleaned constantly, everyone is masked and at least 6ft if not way more than that apart from one another. All of my needs were taken care of. The most painful part must have been the fact that it didn't cross my mind I'd be taking a DL pic today (yikes!) besides that all business handled in the most timely and respectful of your day and other obligations way. I would NOT recommend going without an appointment for any reason on Earth, unless you are literally just craving waiting in a crazy long line along masked strangers outside. If waiting around doing something like that is how you get your kicks, then be my guest otherwise an appointment is the only logical way of tackling your DMV needs my friends. If I could give a negative rating, I would!! Where should I start? REASON FOR VISITING: Renewing my driver's license. ARRIVING: The lines for someone with an appointment and without an appointment were not clearly marked! The lines were side by side. It looked like the lines at Disneyland (snake lines). ONE POSITIVE THING: The security guard came over and helped people know which line to stand in. CHECK-IN WINDOW: Two windows but only one was open. Although the person at the window was polite, she did not properly instruct me on the process. I had completed the form online and made an appointment (at 9:40 am). I was emailed a confirmation code once I made the appointment. RESTROOMS:- I felt like I stepped into a third world country!! They were filthy! This is not an exaggeration! I thought I was going to catch a disease. Both had no toilet seat covers or toilet paper or hand soap. One had puddles of water(?) on the floor due to the toilet overflowing. I regret not taking pictures to submit as part of a complaint! WAITING AREA TO BE CALLED: It was like a can of sardines, chairs so close together, right up against each other. You couldn't move them apart. Lots of people!! I was looking for the code on the screens waiting to be called. After 30 minutes passed my appointment time and I wasn't called, I went up to one of the windows to tell the person that I have been waiting. She told me that I missed my appointment and had to go back to the check-in window to get a number to be called. So, I went back to the appointment line, and the woman gave me another number. I had to walk back across to the waiting area. About 15 minutes later, my number was called. AT THE WINDOW FOR PROCESSING: I went to the counter to start the process. The woman pulled up the information I submitted online. I was told to review the information on the tablet and confirm it was correct. I was shocked to see that the tablet she was referring to was secured at the top of the wall of the cubicle. I am 5" 5' tall and the bottom of the tablet came about level with my eyebrows. My information was in clear sight of everyone behind me in the waiting area. Anyone could have taken a photo of it if they wanted to. I was not even told how long it would take to get my driver's license! After I paid my fee, I was instructed to go into another line to take my picture! The photo taker was in the cubicle next to this counter! PHOTO: I had to call my sister to come from the car where she was waiting for me and ask her to come stand in line cause I couldn't. I am over 60 years old and have sciatica issues. Luckily I had someone with me to get me through this process! When it was finally my turn to take a picture, the person didn't even give me a chance to get ready or warn me when she was going to take the photo. She just said OK, next! That was it! I know I am not a model, but I would like some dignity. This is a picture I will have for at least 5 years!! This place is chaotic, crowded and exhausting! There should be some violation for treating senior citizens/disabled people in such a manner. I will avoid this location at all costs!!! I warn others to do the same. This is clearly a case of bad management. ONE OTHER POSITIVE THING: With the exception of the person who took my photo, no one was rude or mean to me. read more

Claudia ( I don't know if she wants me to use her last name). This woman listened to my story and even though I felt ashamed for doing a stupid thing , she was nothing but kind and helpful. I returned another day to drop off the paperwork , she CALLED me and said I needed to get a refund. I had not been to this location in almost 15 years, but we had a great experience here today. The lines are much more structured and make sense (I had an appointment, which helps). Everyone here was also lovely and patient. I mainly wanted to write a review for one of the workers at the photo area today. I did not get his name, but he wore a "DEUS" sweatshirt. He was evident in his instructions and highly patient with everyone. He also managed to get one of the best license photos I've ever seen for my fiancé. DMV has always been an absolute nightmare and the REAL ID debacle has made it even worse! There are NO appointments for THREE MONTHS ahead and the DMV keeps putting representatives on KNX1070 news radio saying that the lines are only 30 minutes! BULLSH$&! I arrived at 2:45 pm on Thursday, February 13th and just getting inside the door to someone at the non-appointment desk (ONE LADY WORKING both registration and non-appt) took over 45 minutes. By the way, the "Current Wait Time" board was non-operational... Then the Real ID line and waiting for the ID verification, fingerprinting and photo. TWO HOURS TOTAL. And the signs within all say they'll take Debit cards but nothing says they'll charge you $0.86 extra. Plus, there's absolutely NO HANDICAPPED SEATING! DMV sucked when I was 18 years old and got my first driver's license and DECADES LATER - with all the advanced technology we now have - THEY STILL SUCK!!! Unbelievable. read more

I mean, it's the DMV. What do you expect? It's slow, all of the attendants have bad attitudes, they don't know what's going on, it's a nightmare to do anything online, it's a nightmare to do anything in person. Also, they introduced this "skip the line" feature that supposedly allows you to get in line from your phone. Sounds great right? Too bad it doesn't work! I've tried it several times and it never works the way it's supposed to. I tried it this morning, got the notification on my phone, went directly to the window, and the attendant was already helping someone else. Then, when I waited through the line again? They didn't know how to do what I wanted them to do. The reason it gets two stars instead of one? This specific location is better than some of the locations in Hollywood. read more
