I recently visited this DMV to have my Hawaii drivers license transferred to a Texas one. I admit I was looooong overdue (at least here in Texas you are required to transfer your license within 90 days). Covid hit shortly after I moved & life was turned upside down for everyone. Now that I've once again moved (this time from Houston to SA), I decided I had to just get it over with. This office is currently operating by APPOINTMENT ONLY. I was able to easily schedule online back in March but the wait was a month long. Hopefully it's gotten better since then. When you arrive, you will submit to a screening (sanitize your hands, temperature taken & the guard asks a few simple questions like whether you have any symptoms or were exposed to someone with Covid recently). There are self check-in tablets available & then you'll have a seat until your number is called. "Renew online" is what everyone will tell you. Convenient? Sure, easy? Definitely. However, there will come a time when you need to show up in person. That being every eight years. The DMV is always crowded and Texas has one of the worst wait times in the country. With the current condition of the pandemic an appointment is required. You're allowed to check in 30 minutes prior. Shoot, even with that in place my total wait time was two hours. I had my documents in hand and the actual process was quick. Some staff was a bit testy but I understand. They're understaffed and possibly underfunded. I'd say my only tips for this adventure is to have your documents ready i.e. birth certificate and or valid passport. Arrive early and avoid peak times such as 11am-1pm. read more

Stupid drivers license renewal. Gah. This bureaucratic mess is a required inconvenience that Texans have to put up with every few years. Fortunately, I checked in online and made a reservation, which they came pretty close to honoring! I had to check in on a broken kiosk when I arrived. It'd accept the first few digits of my reservation number, but then wouldn't allow input of the rest. So I sat there fiddling with it, finally beating on it with my finger until I got yelled at for manhandling the machines. But I got checked in on the one working kiosk- the other two were broken, making it the only working kiosk. I saw people get upset with how the line system was working, how people can show up, get their stuff taken care of, and leave quickly, while they're sitting there indefinitely- it seemed like they'd been there forever. But, they got my license renewed, and handed me a paper one until the real one comes in the mail. The staff seemed like they'd done all this before, and it was just rote routine for them. This dmv has had an upgrade on technical side but the employees aren't In Any hurry to get you threw .and you can't ask a question because they refer you back to the kiosk in the front which you had to answer a bunch of questions. San Antonio needs another Driver Licence DMV. Being stuck with hundreds of strangers, and waiting for over two hours wasn't my favorite experience to date, and it's even more frustrating when you see that there's so much room for improvement. It's a lack of respect for people's time, as if we were second class citizens. Out of all dmvs this was by far the dirtiest one I've been too, however the service was very pleasant and efficient once it was my turn to go. Overall a terrible location for a DMV, it's a busy area especially during rush hour. I must commend the people who work there for being very nice under such pressure. Must not be easy to see thousands of people every day at their worst. If you have to come here, do it during non crazy times, or check in in line before you leave your office. He is bald and has the look of efficiency about him. Who hired this guy? Will he open window 2? 38 Texans hold their breath. 23! There is order in this chaos, or maybe they only want me to think that. Mustn't give in. Mustn't have hope. They use hope as a weapon. Call a number near yours and then... 451? I knew it. They won't fool me again. Two hours now. The bald man has vanished. They probably put him on a performance plan. 857, 210 and the bald man has opened window 2. Is it a trick? "To expedite service, please have all required documents available." Do I have them? Doubt and fear fill me. A different deputy appears, "Take a seat! I need everybody to take a seat!". Or what, the plane can't leave the gate? Of course, he's got the gun and the taser, so I confine my snark to yelp. Aren't you lucky. 211, 212, 213... 800? I'm seeing a pattern. The bald man is only seeing bald applicants. What's up with that? 25, 214. Window six is on a roll. Three applicants in a row. 6, 6, 6. That explains a lot. Window six - the devil's window- just called 26. Is that where fate leads? Haven't my sins been purged in the waiting room? Two hours fifteen minutes so far. 27, 28, mustn't hope. Mustn't hope. 403. I knew it, and she got the devil's window. Ha! 215. Finally 29! At window six! I approach, like I'm about to order from the Soup Nazi. Temporary paper license issued, real plastic one in the mail. Total time: two hours, twenty-five minutes waiting. Three minutes getting renewed. Thank God the government is taking over health care. Two stars because I imagine that a dominatrix would charge more per hour but be less imaginative. read more

The DMV system on the south and west sides so far are the worst. 1. Unless you wait and get in first thing in the morning expect a 2-3 hour wait. 2. Both here and the hudnell location is stuffy. I would highly recommend Leon valley, or a third party vendor like "Texas auto title. 3. The employees obviously hate their job, I don't blame em. ;) 4. If you get caught past closing... well, you are out of luck. 5. Reread the prior 4 and really ask yourself, "am I that lazy or cheap that I won't drive or pay a little convenience fee for much better and expedited services?" read more

If I could give the zero stars I would. So my son had an appointment today at 2:20 to get his drivers license after having his permit for over 6 months. I had issues getting the voe (verification of enrollment) from the school because the administrator who takes care of that had not been in since summer started. Well I went into the dmv, took his report card in around 9:30am this morning and let them know the situation because his appointment was later that day. They said they would accept the report card, so I didnt have to reschedule appt, I said thank you see you at 2:20pm and kept his appointment for 2:20pm. We went back to the dmv for his appointment at 2:20pm, after 30 minutes in the waiting area we got called to a teller. The lady looked through his paperwork and said they couldn't take the report card because he had 10 absences. I told her he had gotten Covid and she said well we can't prove that. Then she said he is only allowed to miss 9 days of school per semester then said he had to be present for 90% of the semester. I was so confused like which is it 9 absences or 90% present, those would be 2 different numbers. To me she just sounded like she didn't know what she was talking about. Either way they didn't let him take the driving test and now I have to figure out how to get this stupid VOE form filled. TOTAL Waste of my time!!! That's why I went in the morning to ask. I am 40 something and this building is exactly the same from when I got licensed at 16! Not sure who I feel sorrier for, the sad faced employees or the public forced to melt in the sun..... Why did I bother putting on makeup today, ugh. Online renewal way to go except if you're unfortunate to lose your license... No online options for that one... I can't pass out, I'll lose my spot! Almost to front door, they say it's two hr wait from that position.... Dare I hope? God, if you can hear prayer from firey hell, please send breeze... Have mercy on the poor and the humbled... You'll be waiting for hours, the screen line is out of order, therefore they jump back and forth between ticket numbers, one minute they're on ticket number 420, the next they're on 200.. then 130.. wtf. I waited 4 hours for them to tell me I needed a fucking AT&T bill, in order to get my license.. ill go to another DMV. read more

This is Texas Department of Public Safety it is not the DMV, they are two different state agencies. DPS does drivers license and the DMV does duplicate titles or lost titles. read more

Worst experience ever they always find a reason not to do work. Been here 8 times for my license still haven't even took the driving test.

Can't really find myself willing to even punch one star for these folks--but yelp wont accept 0 stars so there you go. In an effort to look efficient they have someone look through papers when you get there to ensure you have everything for your quest. So when you are on your third trip home for another paper because you have achieved counter and gotten "oops dont know why they didn't notice you were missing that," an "wow they should have known we won't accept that" makes you feel like a fish on a reel as they see how long they can play you for. Think I'm kidding? There are signs that say hit M on your phone when they txt you it's your turn so they know you're there. When you do you get to watch your number move below someone lower on the que. My husband went to Pat Booker location--had much better luck there. read more
