I started out as Beginner with the DMX Dance Company in 2004. I was thoroughly impressed by the skill level of the teachers, as well as the students, but I was more impressed with the level of patience the teachers possessed when working with the students. Some of the most important aspects I learned while taking classes with the company include the history behind the dance, learning to dance to the music and not the count, and following any partner with ease. Dancing with Dave Maxx gave me the confidence to dance with experienced dancers that I would have never had the courage to dance with and to even get up on a large stage and compete. I love love love this class! I think I've missed 1 class in 8 months. I couldn't step a lick, and wasnt that good at faking it either, BUT Dave has turned me into a potential BEAST! He is very patient, and a hands on teacher that helps u in your areas of lack. He teaches attitude, style, and a don't come for me unless you know what you doing mentality. If you have ever thought about taking a steppin class, but wasn't sure, was nervous, or scared to learn in front of other people, Dave will get you together! I've taken several Chicago Stepping classes in the past both at clubs and a more formal course and this class is by far the BEST. Previous classes have focused on the counting method and when I got to the dance floor I was so focused on counting that I could never progress. Dave Maxx has a different approach to teaching the class without the focus on counting - which I love and need. I'm currently taking the Beginners 100 Level class and I look forward to taking more classes with Dave in the future. Oh - and the American Rhythm Center is a great location in the city. read more

Phenomenal Steppers class! Not all classes teach flow and follow through...most only focus on technique. DMX dance company taught technique first and then flow. Two very different things and when a person dances with only one of the two it looks forced or overly flashy. Every single time I dance I get inquiries about my teacher. I was taught to enjoy the dance, to enjoy my dance partner and the music! Plus love the organization and professionalism of how class is ran. If ya gonna learn, learn the right way! read more

If you want to learn how to "step" then this is the person I'd recommend. All I can say is that Dave is "Da Man!" I attended several classes so far and they are all professional and fun. He and his staff are very professional and informative yet laid-back and cool. The classes are pretty flexible, offered at different times, days, and locations, which is very convenient. I have started taking lessons from Dave and his company going in 6 years now and I can say that his classes are awesome. While he does teach the sexy and fancy side of steppin', the fundamentals are what have made me a strong dancer. Anywhere I go, ppl compliment my instructor. I've taken 2 sessions of Soul Swing with Dave Maxx at ARC. He is a master teacher who's passion for the dance is absolutely contagious. Dave's teaching methods are unique - you won't learn counting, but by listening and following your natural instincts.
