This review is for the Adult classes, specifically the ballet class. When I first started going it was a monthly fee for 2 classes of your choice. It then moved to 1 class for the monthly fee. This is a little pricey considering the fees for the other studios in the area that offer adult classes. If you took ballet as a child and want to get back into it and grow, I would not recommend this studio. The training of the teachers they select for this class is wishy washy. Sometimes they have teachers that are professionals or former professional dancers, which is great. Sometimes they have teachers that trained as a dancer so they took ballet classes, but ballet isn't their thing, or in the case of 1 person they would use to sub doesn't even like ballet. I signed up for ballet. I don't want a hip hop fusion or jazz, but ballet. There doesn't seem to be any mentoring of the younger teachers so they can grow and develop. I don't see the younger students exhibiting studio etiquette. Also not sure if it's even taught to them. When I was a young student, when the class ended, you needed to gather your things and leave and the class helpers made sure you were with your parent/guardian. There's a lot of lingering so the next class starts very late, but still ends on time, so we are cheated out of time and money. They also need to be more transparent on their money practices. They would sometimes randomly cancel class or breaks in the middle of the month, with no mention of giving a credit unless you specifically call or email to inquire. If you don't inquire, they have no intentions on offering a remedy. read more

Good dance studio. Good teachers. Very sympathetic to adult dancers by making accomodations for any physical issues. Problems with the studio - no locker rooms, they turned them into storage it looks like, very small waiting areas/hallways with kids' bookbags everywhere, you have to bring your coat/belongings into the dance studio because no lockers and hang your stuff on the bar because ants will crawl into it. It takes 30 extra days after you cancel your membership so they can charge you one more time. read more

I am so happy I tried ClassPass to visit this exquisite dance studio! Ever since I was little, I just loved dancing. I didn't mind being goofy, learning different routines within a time limit, or getting bruises while trying new choreography. It certainly felt like I made a full circle journey when I went to Trey's Contemporary dance class. If you want to rediscover yourself in a safe, beautiful environment, this will be a haven for you! FRAUDULENT BIZ PRACTICES!!....my now 5yr old daughter attended Intrigue for almost 3yrs until we decided to take a break for a season. We alerted staff she wouldn't be returning after a spring/fall performance and both said our goodbyes. Fast forward 8 months...I notice on my bank stmnt that Intrigue never stopped debiting my bank acct for $199 monthly fees! When my wife called to alert them and asked for refund....even having record/knowledge that my daughter had stopped attending, they refused to refund any of our $1600 for their mistake! Terrible business practices and a shame they treat long-term customers (that have recommended them to other families in neighborhood) that way. It says alot read more

I would not have known about this dance studio if it werent for groupon. Oh, how I love thee. This studio is located at an excellent location! Only two blocks away from me! I had no excuse not to go! Checked out the hip hop class with Nabz. She is a great instructor! The first 10 minutes focused on stretching. Man, did I feel old and out of shape. I cannot touch my toes. It was not a proud moment for me. The rest of the class was learning the moves. Nabz would teach us the moves, repeat, repeat repeat. More repeat. And then add the music. Repeat, repeat repeat with the music. I had a lot of fun! The class kicked my ass. I was sweatin by the time we were done. Nabz made sure we were doing ok, hydrated, and not too hot (temperature wise). I can tell she really enjoys her job and she was so patient with us. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back. The studio offers a variety of dances which include jazz, tap, hip hop, pilates, etc. I purchased a 10 class package so I'm hoping to check out the pilates class next. Will update on how that goes.......probably more stretching.... Dammit. Make sure to dress appropriately and wear shoes without black soles. They have an office where you check in which is located past the waiting area. I was a little confused on the set up when I first walked in. The new studio is fabulous! Clean, spacious, and includes locker rooms! I've taken a four classes and really enjoyed half of them. Strength and Stretch was enjoyable and challenging. The instructor/owner Pia was warm, helpful, and constructed a great class with good flow and great music. She even spent time correcting postures and helping push people further into stretches. I loved that. Yoga Sculpt also had a fabulous instructor. I was the only one in the class, so I ended up with a private lesson and she did a regular yoga class for me when I expressed an interest. Super sweet as well. The Jazz/Ballet classes I've taken were taught by a sub who I wasn't a big fan of. He had a little trouble with the flow of class, ballet ended after the jump combination. We never made it out of the center of the room, no grand allegro, which is the best part of the class. For beginning/intermediate jazz the combination was way too easy and short. I would recommend going up a level from the classes you take elsewhere. But Intrigue is a great dance studio and I love their new location. They just posted their fall schedule and the adult classes are aplenty, at least 4-5 a day. Can't wait for them to start September 4th! read more

Yup, I'm back with more to say about this awful dance studio in the South Loop. This time, however, I'm reviewing the children's dance classes. When my partner's three-year-old daughter was in two for two weeks last winter, we called Intrigue to see if they would let her drop-in for a few ballet/tap classes. They told us it would be no problem - just bring her by the studio, fill out some paperwork, and pay the $15 per class fee. Imagine our surprise then, when the man working the reception counter (which, by the way, is nearly buried amongst folding chairs, shoes, bags, toys and parents in a very narrow hallway) informed us in the second week that they would no longer be able to accommodate our little one, as there "might" be other children who wanted to take a make-up class. Strange, as there was no mention of that possibility when we first called (or prior to the three classes she had dropped-in for the previous week). And, though I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear this, there were absolutely no children waiting to take a make-up class. But my complaint is not limited to the complete lack of organization at Intrigue. No, in fact, my complaint is actually centered around the quality - or lack thereof - of the children's dance classes. The children's instructors at Intrigue seem exhausted, frustrated and ill-prepared to manage 10 children. Rather than making the class a fun and exciting introduction to ballet, they focus entirely too much on technique. Perhaps that's why the children find ways to entertain themselves - making funny faces in the mirror and twirling in their ballet skirts while the instructor tries, unsuccessfully, to establish some kind of order. Here's a perfect example: at Intrigue, students walk across the room on their tiptoes doing piques every other step. An instructor holds their hand and makes them do about 15 piques (it's a long walk to the other side of the room!). In the meantime, students awaiting their turn (for as many as 7 minutes) get restless, bored, cranky. And there's really nothing to look forward to: class ends with barre work, rather than free-form dancing or any kind of fun activity. I wish Yelp allowed users to post videos as well as pictures, because then you could see for yourself what a mess the children's program is. I'd love to show you comparison videos between Intrigue and A Fairytale Ballet, where we ended up taking our little one over the summer, despite the 25-minute drive to get there (and believe me, it is absolutely worth it). The difference is night and day. As it's very unlikely that even 1/4 of these girls will end up prima ballerinas down the road, I wish Intrigue would focus more on making ballet class something they remember and look forward to rather than a chore. On top of the lackluster children's program, as I said in my previous review, the studios themselves are filthy. The walls need new paint and the floors need to be mopped every once in awhile. Case in point: the bottom of our little one's brand new ballet slippers were black by the time she left her first ballet class. I do not exaggerate. Intrigue continues to disappoint in so many ways - it actually makes me mad that this studio gets away with poor instruction, dirty facilities and office disorganization. I cannot stress enough that there are considerably better dance studios in the area, both for adults and children. read more

My daughter enjoyed very much this place recently I had my grandmother pass away during winter break so we made an emergency trip to Mexico i sent my daughter back in the care of my mother but she can't make it to take her to class i did notify to studio i would be away and my daughter can't make it to please put her tuition on pause until i got back. I haven't been able to make it back due my grandfather getting very ill then shorty passing away also. They where everything to our family with them gone a lot needs to get done before I can leave . I lost my job due to this issue and the studio has been charging me tuition for my daughter that hasn't even been going to class i am depending on every cent that is saved up to get by until i can come back this studio is greedy, calls it's self a dance family yet where is the support. Some background on me: I am currently 24 and have been dancing ballet, tap, and jazz since I was 5. I have taken hip hop since I was 17 and co-led a hip hop dance group for 4 years. While I am no means a professional dancer, dance is a serious hobby for me. The studio has 2 rooms: one small, one large. I have taken the following classes: INT/ADV Ballet ADV/BEG INT Ballet INT/ADV Hip Hip Cardio Strip Tease Stretch and Strength Here are my reviews on the following: INT/ADV Ballet ADV/BEG INT Ballet Phia is a phenomenal ballet instructor. She takes the time to constructively critique every dancer. I feel I have learned more from her in terms of improving my form and technique than from the ballet instructor I had from age 5-18. While she goes fast, she challenges every student and encourages us to do our best. INT/ADV Hip Hip Good. Although I wish there was a separate INT class and ADV class. For an ADV student, these classes may not always be challenging enough. Cardio Strip Tease This is a good class for cardio. While an advanced dancer will also get a work out, the combinations may be too simple to keep your interest. Stretch and Strength Good. You will be sore the next day. read more

I seemed tyo have become uncoordinated in the past few years. I spent my whole life participating in one form of dance or another and have recently been unable to follow a choreagraphed dance routine so I was a little worried about setting myself up for 10 failures with the 10 pack of classes I bought with my groupon. I went with two friends who all agreed we were going to laugh our asses off at eachother during the cardio strip tease class...and we did. The instructor, Nabz, was so cool and patient. I think she got a kick out of horrible moves and laughter. For us it was not cardio strip tease but more like cardio strip? oh please! She saw that I was having trouble with a particular section and instead of pointing it out to everyone she review it with the whole group to save me the embarassment. The prices are reasonable and the classes are on a drop-in type deal so you do not have to make a commitment to come so many weeks in a row to build lesson upon lesson. You come in, take a class and walk away knowing you got a great work out. its right off the L and the class times are really convenient. A regular drop in class is $15, $12 for students. You can also purchase 10 packs for a discounted rate. I cant wait to go back and try hip hop and salsa. read more

My 4yr old daughter has been going to Intrigue now for over a year and she absolutely loves it. Pia is an amazing teacher. My daughter just turned three when she started and boy oh boy I had moments when I thought I was going to yank her out of class because she was such a distraction to the rest of the kids. Three is pretty young to have organized instructed classes and my daughter was not used to having to take direction. She would do things like play with the strings on the blind, lick the mirror, run around the room randomly while everyone was following the instructor. For weeks on end Pia would reassure me that she's improving and she will get better and sure enough she did. And the recital in the summer is sooooooo cute. Even if you don't have kids you should go see it as it's such a kick and there's been so much time and energy put into creating the pieces, picking out the costumes and teaching the little ones the routines. It was at Jones Hall Prep which was just the right size. They do have adult performances which were just as impressive. Definitely a place to try out. Be sure to call in advance to make sure there is room in the class as they've been booking up fast. I know some friends who's kids had to be wait listed for some of the classes. read more

This place is terrific! The instructors are very helpful and the classes are small enough that students get quite a bit of one-on-one attention. I've been taking the novice ballet class with Pia and she does a great job of explaining/demonstrating the moves, particuarly which muscles you should be using and how it relates to your body overall. As others have mentioned, it's a great location for those of us who don't drive in Chicago. About a 3 minute walk from the Roosevelt stop. If you work in the Loop like I do, the #1 bus goes directly from Union station to here. read more

Bought the Groupon and I'm glad I did. The place is a bit small and right above a Thai restaurant. I took a variety of classes but I was able to attend the Cardio Strip Tease class the most frequently. It was more cardio and not enough strip tease. You get a solid workout but the combinations are too simple. I really liked the instructors for most of my classes. They were very encouraging and talented dancers. I wished they would fix up the women's restrooms and sweep the dance floors more often. read more

My daughter has been attending Intrigue Dance for the last two years and has made great strides in learning a variety of styles, including ballet, jazz and tap. I credit her development to the instruction by Pia Hamilton, who owns and operates Intrigue, and to the other dance instructors she employs. Overall, the staff is very good, and they offer enough courses that a busy parent can enroll their child when it suits their schedule. The environment is great for children of any age and Intrigue offers sample courses through Groupon and open houses on occasion, which is are great ways to see if Intrigue is right for you or your child. In addition, Pia and the other teachers at Intrigue take dance very seriously. They have both a pre-professional dance troupe which performs frequently and a youth pre-professional dance troupe for children that attends dance conferences and competitions. Intrigue is great not only for people who want to learn how to dance, but for those for whom dance is their passion. Highly recommended! read more

I love that this place is walking distance from home! I went with my sis to their beginners hip hop class. I liked that we got to dance with other beginners, and learn in a smaller group environment. So I went back on Tuesday and it's nice to see familiar faces.... there were the same people and more this time around... The class was still fun but the instructor taught the same moves as the week prior. I was a little disappointed but I guess you can never have enough refreshers... The Thursday sessions are definitely worth trying! It's such high enegry and you definitely sweat a lot! So to summarize, Tuesday is great because you actually learn and take more time learning a choreography... the instructor will make time to explain and go over questions, a larger group... definitely a beginner's class. The Thursday is high enegry, calorie burning, and makes you feel like a dance machine! read more

I never took ballet (or any other dance, for that matter) as a child, so buying a Groupon was a low-risk opportunity to try it out at Intrigue. While I always leave with a healthy dose of humility from not being so good, I must say I really like this place and I have fun. I take the Novice Ballet for adults and I find that Pia (owner/instructor) is: 1. Very patient. 2. Very good at explaining movements and techniques. 3. Professional and takes dance seriously, but not to the point that it isn't fun or is discouraging. Sometimes the class gets a little crowded and there isn't a ton of space to share, but I keep going back because I love how the workout makes me feel. read more

I went with a friend to try the hip hip class at Intrigue. It was a great workout and a lot of fun! My friend & I were the only 2 in the class (probably a good thing since we are rusty) but it was wonderful. For a single adult class the rate is $15 a class. It's really convenient for those who live south but also it right near the bus stop and the red, green & orange lines! I will definitely be back. They offer a package of 10 classes for $130. They have everything from ballet, tap, jazz to cardio striptease! Great way to try a variety of dance. (Also, have children's classes.) Check it out! read more

I decided to take a dance class here. The studio offers a variety of class for adults and children. From the information on the website, it seemed like a good studio. Well, I arrived at the studio and it's messy. There are children shoes, clothes, books, toy's everywhere. I understand that children are at this studio but someone could at least keep the place tidy. But, i was going to forgive that. Well, my class was suppose to start at 12pm. It didn't start till about 12:10-12:12:15 due the children's class ending late and the instructor having problems with the sound system The instructor was substituting because the regular instructor was out of town. Well, the instructor was talented but he didn't have a plan in place for the class. So, we spent some waiting for him to develop a routine. The class ended on time but I felt cheated since we started late. read more

My daughter took a ballet/tap combo class here so my review primarily refelcts what parents of toddler dancers might want to know. First, they are on the second floor with no elevator. So if you walk, and or stroll over with your child (or two), you must leave your stroller in the lobby of an unlocked building unless you want to carry it upstairs. You figure out what to do with all the things in your basket and whether you can haul it all up or leave it exposed to passers-by on the street. Then there is a horrible smell of gas in the building which everyone talks about but nothing ever gets resolved. The staff says it is coming from the restaurant doiwnstairs, but why hasn't anyone called the gas company or the restaurant to get it checked out. Some days it was so overwhelming to me I left with a headache. As far as dancing, I think it is the only place in the city that teaches tap to toddlers. This is a pro and a con. Any reputable dance studio would never teach tap this young because it is not yet considered safe, however my daughter is obsessed with tap so I've let her do it, but only because she has taken ballet since before she was 2 so she a bit more stable and coordinated than most her age. The staff consist mostly of young college students and leave much to be desired. Class is perfunctory and boring. Most kids get bored and end up poking eachother, playing with knobs on the wall, licking things, and nudging one another while waiting their turn to practice the next move. They teach the kids as if they are adults, and again, for a child like mine who has experience and passion for dance it is ok, but for others it would not do. I currently have my daughter enrolled at another school for more age appropriate and serious training for developing skills needed for becoming a dancer. But I may keep her in the ballet-tap here just for the tap until I can get her into tap at another more professional school. Intrigue is not at all the place for parents of children who want to pursue dance more seriously. This place is better suited for those who do it for fun or just to see your little girls dressed up in a tutu. But even that is hard to do here. They have a tiny cramped hallway with one small window to peak into the room where the kids dance. On a good day maybe three parents can fit to see in the window and those who do are not friendly about taking turns. There is a handful of chairs lined up outside the window but once a parent sits down there, they don't move, so come early if you care for one of those seats. read more

Still loving my classes at Intrigue. I took a friend to a jazz class (also with Pia the owner) and we both got a great workout. The warm-up was much needed stretching on the floor and abs. I can feel my "six pack" developing today ,a sure sign I got a good workout! They moved into a bigger, nicer studio near Archer and State! There are now three beautiful dance rooms of varying sizes at the new location, and there's a free parking lot! However the lot is shared by all of the stores in this little plaza, so it can be hard to find a spot. But back to the classes, I have almost no dance experience, and have had a great time just learning the basics. The instructors are friendly, fun, and importantly, patient with a newbie like me. Class prices are reasonable, especially with the student discount. I have to admit, I haven't been to any other dance studio and have no comparison, but overall, I think it's a great place, especially for novices. read more

I found Intrigue through their Groupon deal about a year ago and I'm so glad. The class sizes average 6-12 people so there is plenty of individual attention. Pia's classes are my personal favorites! Strength and Stretch is the perfect training for any level dancer and her jazz classes are a great blend of traditional jazz and contemporary styles. We signed up our four year old for dance classes here and we will not return. While Pia may be very talented and able to teach young adults and adults, this is just not a good studio for kids. Issues: 1. The instructor (who was very nice) was still teaching new combinations to the kids just a few weeks before the recital and used adult music that was of no interest to the kids for a ballet routine. At such a young age, kids should be doing short, repetitive combinations that are tied to the music. That concept was not present here. 2. The rehearsal... over 3 hours long with just one dance mom to watch all of the kids in the class. That's borderline neglectful. 3. The recital - cute costumes but that's about it. The kids' class was a tap/ballet combo and they did 2 dances in the recital. One was #2 or 3 and the other was like #47 or something. Really? That is just not appropriate for a group of little kids. To think that they can sit around for 2 hours in between acts is just ridiculous. They should have 2 recitals so the kids don't have to wait around as long. We would not recommend Intrigue. read more

I purchased the Groupon last year for 10 dance classes for adults. I wanted to learn how to salsa! The first class was wonderful! The second class I was the only student that showed up, so we worked on more salsa steps and turns. The third class, new students showed up and we started everything from the beginning. The forth class, different new students showed up and started everything from the beginning AGAIN! Same thing with my 5th lesson. By this time I was already getting frustrated that I was not learning anything new and wasting my time. I asked why we don't build on what we learned in the previous lesson and was told that the beginning classes for adults are "open" meaning that each time a new person shows up, they start with lesson 1. This is not written in the small print or anywhere. I asked for a refund and was told no, but to try other classes. I don't want other classes b/c I was only interested in salsa. If you want to SAMPLE DIFFERENT classes, this Groupon is a great way to do it. If you want to actually learn ONE TYPE OF DANCE, don't get this Groupon. read more

My daughter attended this studio when I felt she needed better posture three years ago. I felt she wasn't ready to take lessons further as it was a big commitment. But now that I am looking for a studio again where my daughter can take both ballet & hip hop, I will be returning to Intrigue. I think the classes are fun and my daughter loved making new friends. Pia was her teacher & related well to the kids & showed them exactly how to do every movement. I have also taken ballet classes there as an adult and though I am rusty, I was able to get attention from the two teachers who instructed me & I received a great deal of encouragement. The hip hop class is so fun! The teacher has a slick, contemporary style that is not TOO difficult to pick up. The stretch & strength class was packed - it was fantastic! This place is great! I started about two years ago with absolutely zero dance experience (not even as a kid) and have learned so much and had so much fun since then. I started with novice ballet, which I still take after two years because there's plenty to learn and it fits my schedule. I also sometimes take novice jazz and ballroom, which are fantastic, and I consistently take stretch & strength twice a week. It is a terrific workout and I've never been in better shape! The ballroom workshops are a great way to get started with social dancing -- I came without a partner and it was no problem. They've now added a super-fun class called Latin Styles, which covers dances like salsa, cha-cha, rumba, etc., but you dance individually - no partners. I've already learned enough to actually go out ballroom and latin dancing now! The atmosphere at Intrigue is very welcoming, not at all pretentious, and I feel supported even when they give corrections. The adult classes are offered at several levels, which accommodates the serious dancers as well as those of us come for a hobby and a workout. They teach lots of kids classes too, so it's a vibrant environment. There's a free parking lot and plenty of metered street parking if the lot fills. read more

My kid had been going to the classes since last two months and I would say she thoroughly enjoys it. Teachers are knowledgeable and take care of kids learning pace. I love this place as it is clean, enough space for parents to wait while kids are practicing dance. In preparation for our wedding, my husband and I knew we were in dire need of dance lessons so we didn't make complete fools of ourselves during our first dance. Intrigue is right around the corner from our apartment (and just upstairs from our fave neighborhood Thai restaurant) so we decided to check them out. We signed up for a set of personal classes - I can't actually remember how many but I think four? Our instructors were Sharon and Arthur and they were both fantastic. I certainly had my moments of frustration and feeling like I had two left feet, but they were so patient and did whatever it took to make our dance look awesome. They were also really open to listening to what we wanted our dance to be. There were a few steps they suggested near the end of the dance that just felt awkward to us and we couldn't get it right. Instead of forcing it, they just came up with some other steps that we felt better about. They're both so talented and very professional, but also totally down-to-earth and fun. We ended up adding a few extra classes at the end because I wanted to ensure we got everything just right, so I think all-in we had six or so classes. It was well worth it. All of the guests at our wedding were totally impressed with our moves. The one negative thing I have to share about the studio itself is that it can get HOT. Granted, our classes were in the heat of summer--July and August--but it was definitely warm in there. Other than that, though, all good. We were really pleased. read more

I have been with Intrigue student classes for over a year. It started out relaxed and fun and my daughters loved going. This year, however, they have decided to get very serious about the dance, even for little ones. You have to wear your hair a certain way, you have to be in Ballet at the same time as Tap and Jazz or you can't do any of it. Your clothing has to be perfect (you have to sign an agreement about this). My kids just want to dance and have fun, not be worried about whether or not they have remembered to take their underwear off under their specific color of tights. Teachers are fantastic and prices are reasonable. read more

Overall, my daughter was disappointed with the summer camp experience. She loves to dance, but didn't like the teachers at Intrigue. In general they were stressed out and no fun at all, often shouting and punishing students if they were not able to complete tasks. It didn't help that it was a big group, with a wide range of ages. This was supposed to be a fun summer activity, not an army boot camp!! Also unhappy with their return policy. We bought ballet shoes through Intrigue which were too small so we had to purchase replacements at an external store assuming we could just cancel the order with Intrigue and get a refund (this is what we were verbally led to believe by staff). However, after dragging their feet on this all week, we were finally told this would not be possible and they could only offer credit on future courses as per their policy (buried in fine print). Very petty for the sake of $17. I don't recommend this school at all. read more

Intrigue offers so many class options for children and adults. The staff is always helpful and friendly. I started instruction here when I lived down the block and I will continue to commute to the South Loop from the northside for the back-to-back Tuesday Hip Hop classes! read more

I have tried a few classes here and there are definitely better places in the city. The rooms are small and the instruction was just OK at best. For the price, there are much better dance places to go to for adults in Chicago. Maybe the focus is more on kids classes. read more

TERRIBLE first dance experience. Granted, not for my daughter, but for us as parents. The "front office" was horribly disorganized, constantly asking for room mothers, but never following through or providing any parent contact information. The "recital" was also disorganized and the costumes hardly worth the 85.00 RENTAL fee, that's right - rental. You don't get to keep these little gems. I could have slapped some sequins on some satin and probably come up with something better. The teacher was nice enough, and patient, but the class was too big for any real individualized attention - which was unfortunate. At nearly 500 for the semester, I thought there would have been a little more individualized attention for beginners. There were also hidden costs down the line, such as parking at the recital. Anyway, not the best experience for a little one just starting out - for fun - it would be better for you to pay minimally out of pocket and go to the Y first to see if it's really worth it.
