What I know about chimneys could fit in a thimble. I was seeking other information and was informed that the Crown on the chimney was deteriorating and they showed me pictures. What was helpful here, after the owner answered 1000 questions, was getting the work done promptly after determining if it even needed to be done.. as I said that was not why I was calling around to begin with. The owner was courteous and patient explaining what my alternatives would be to correct the problem and what could foreseeably be an issue with water leakage inside the house if left without repair. I booked an appointment one week ago and their technician (Amador, a great guy :) )showed up exactly when promised. The home office called me 20 minutes prior to make sure I knew he was on the way. We couldn't get to my roof since our house is tall, but Amador tried all options first. He explored my attic, and we even tried to call my neighbors. We needed a chimney sweep to clean out our chimney since we recently bought our home and the listing agent said the former owners never used the fireplace in the 20 years they lived here. DNA is here in San Leandro and I liked what I was reading in their reviews, so I decided to give them a call. Had to leave a message but they were super responsive and called me right back. They gave their prices upfront for what it would cost for a cleaning and inspection, and came out as soon as they could given that it's fireplace season and they're majorly impacted. The tech came out on time and called before arriving, and got right to work cleaning out the chimney and inspecting it. He found that it's currently unsafe to use due to broken tiles in the chimney that won't effectively keep ash and embers from potentially starting a fire, and quoted us for repair work. We haven't yet had the work done, but I was really pleased with DNA. From start to finish they were professional, responsive, friendly, and transparent, and explained clearly in their report what we need to have fixed to get the fireplace back in working order. They also included photos of our chimney, the damage, and a diagram demonstrating what they'd do to fix the damage. We will likely be going with DNA for the repairs. TIS the season to get warm and cozy over a fire! I scheduled these guys for a fireplace inspection and potential cleaning and had a great experience! The people I spoke with over the phone with questions and all scheduling needs were very friendly and helpful. First off, I have never used my fireplace and I've lived in my place for 5 years! I always thought it looked decorative, and I was intimidated because it's a wood-burning fireplace - which I've never had before. I live in a condo building. Two guys came by and in total they were in and out in 1 hour! They spent that time doing a thorough inspection. They said I didn't need a cleaning - which I really appreciated, as this was proof they're not trying to upsell things that people don't need! The techs wore masks and social distanced, and I kept the balcony door open. Overall it felt pretty safe. Finally, they just mentioned that all I needed was to get a fireproof hearth mat and I would be good to go to start having fires in my fireplace! I ordered one online immediately. I asked a few other questions about wood-burning fireplaces as well and they didn't mind at all. Overall, great service! Loved all the crew I interacted with! I had my appointment last month, on 11/26, and I believe I called two weeks prior to try to get an appointment. These guys book up, especially during the cold weather weeks! I realized that I had not written a review of my awful experience with Adam and DNA. So here it is. I calledand requested that they clean & inspect my chimney. Adam called We talked. He sent the quote and I accepted. I had not used it in over 10 years. And before that, used the wax logs. I wanted to convert it to gas. He sent a worker over. He cleaned it out and inspected it. It needed to be repaired. They repaired it. So far so good. I had them install the new gas log set. It worked fine. That is when things went BAD. And I Mean VERY VERY Bad. There was SOOT all over the house. A BLACK LAYER of soot everywhere. I had to get the house, rugs, floors and curtains cleaned. And cleaned. And cleaned. What a BIG MESS. (Did they ever offer to pay for any of this? NO!) I Called Adam. Told him what happened. He sent his worker out. Guess what. He cleaned the chimney AGAIN. This entire sequence happened a total of 4 times. Not One. Not 2 Not 3 But 4 Times. I have attached some pics of the soot after cleaning. In total Disgust, I called JEFF @ PENINSULA CHIMNEY. He came over and verified everything was done correctly. He made the suggestion to add TEMPERED glass on the doors to the fireplace which would keep to the soot, THANK YOU JEFF. I really appreciate the time Adam took to talk with me about chimney sweep services. Long story short, watch out for companies that are not qualified to provide these services. There are a lot of companies listed on Google etc that are not legit, so be careful when you're looking for a good chimney sweep service. It's actually pretty hard to tell which sites are legit and which are not...so be sure to take the time to verify the company you book. I found out the hard way when one 'company' sent someone over who clearly did not know what they were doing. Note: if someone comes up to clean your chimney and starts blowing a bunch of ash all over your house, tell them to stop immediately and find someone who is qualified. I got my chimney cleaned by a screen/chimney combo company (not DNA) when I moved into my house. Little did I know, they also did a "full inspection" which resulted in an $8k quote. It didn't smell right to me and so I called DNA for a second opinion. I spoke with Adam for 10 min and he patiently reviewed the other company's quote and report w me. He agreed that it didn't sound like an honest quote and offered to send someone out for free to take a second look. DNA came out on time and did their own inspection. We've used DNA's cleaning and chimney repair services for the last 10 years and they always do a fantastic job. We recently had an issue with some smoke in our attic that we thought was caused by the fact that it needing resealing. After the resealing was done, the issue wasn't fixed. We called them back to ask what we should do and they came back out right away free of charge. They looked everywhere until they found the cause (a small issue under the chimney cap) and fixed it right then. I absolutely recommend them for any fireplace concerns you have. read more
