Day of service, Michael arrived promptly. He is professional and efficient. Turns out our valve had broken, which required a special part. 5 stars for the gorgeous Mendota fireplace and ease of installation back in 2020! It's still beautiful, which is good, since it cost close to $9,000. The installation was smooth, and aside from a burnt out lightbulb above the flame area, it has worked wonders to heat the house for 4 winters! Fewer stars for the wait-time and attitude when the fireplace stops working. I'm writing this to update my earlier, frustrated review based on having to wait for 8 weeks to get our beautiful Mendota fireplace fixed. In short, the gorgeous fireplace worked great at heating the house for the first 4 years! When it stopped turning on this past October, I was stunned to learn that we would have to wait almost 8 weeks until Dec. 18 for an appointment with OKells to repair it. This made for a cold Thanksgiving since we use the fireplace as the main heat and don't have a furnace. It would have been really helpful if the folks at OKells could either have 1. helped us out to get if fixed sooner, given that it's the only heat source... or if it was impossible to squeeze us in sooner, 2. It would have been awesome if they had recommended one of the independent repair companies immediately, so I knew this was an option. I finally got a referral after desperately calling around for help, from Blaze Fireplace of all places, who went out of their way to give me the names and numbers of several independent companies that fix these things! So, now it's working again after having a valve replaced. (Some of my frustration comes from the fact that I personally always try to go above and beyond for people in need. I'm a teacher, and I always try to go the extra mile for my students and colleagues. I really believe in taking care of members of my community, and I wish this business had the same work ethic and a little bit of kindness, in trying to help out someone who really needs their heater to work, instead of giving me a lecture on why they can't do it any sooner.) read more

So pleased with the work Okell's did to convert our wood-burning fireplaces to gas! We have two original fireplaces from 1908 and Okell's installed a gas insert in one and a gas-log set in the other. We purchased a gas log and installed a gas line to the fireplace, then our project went awry when the early November chimney inspection revealed that our flue was unsafe.  Our neighbor recommended OKell's for chimney flue repair and we're sure glad we contacted them. Despite not starting our project with OKell's, they came to our rescue.  Trevor and Derek were great to deal with.  They explained their Thermocrete repair process, had Jeff come out the following week for an estimate and scheduled the job for just 4 weeks later.  They even moved the job up one day to avoid postponing it due to the pending wet weather!  Gabriel and Ryan came out to complete the work and they were a pleasure to have in our home.  Gabriel further explained the process and was very professional as he completed the work. I had been hoping to save the original wood fireplace in our 1912 craftsman style home, but the chimney was just crumbling. I went to a few fireplace shops, and the team at Okell's was the best. Charlie and Trevor helped me select a Mendota FV34 and my family couldn't be happier. It can be hard to find a fireplace that looks like it could have been original to a hundred year old house. He remembered me from a decade ago when they rebuilt the firebox in our last house and we accidentally kept failing to open the flu! We had the open/shut reversed. Okell's seem to have different individuals responsible for different steps of the process (sales, scheduling, installation, repair, etc.). I am obviously not in the fireplace business myself (or else I would not be looking for one), so naturally, I did not know much about fireplace inserts. 1 star off: So when I had questions about something that spans different areas, it took forever to get those questions answered because someone was on vacation, out sick, on lunch break, etc. 1 star off: When Okell gave me their estimate, it was several thousand dollars over what other places quoted me. On top of that, they were scheduling couple months out, because one of the technicians was out. I hired OKell's for an inspection and cleaning. When the representative came over, he told me that the fireplace was not safe for use, but it could be if I allowed his company to do work on it. The work would cost close to $10,000 and would require ripping out drywall and destroying a wall that I would have to hire a contractor to fix when the job was done. Needless to say, I decided to get 2 more second opinions, both companies explained to me that it was unnecessary for me to do the work OKell's suggested. The first person to inspect my chimney told me I needed a chimney sweep. I explained that it had just been done the week before by OKell's. In the end I got the fireplace fixed by another company that did the same work for $3400 instead of the $10,000 I was quoted. My fireplace was cleaned by that company as well included with the work. The guy that came from OKell's seemed very sales pitchy and used a lot of fireplace jargon. I'm pretty sure they work on commission. Buyer beware! read more

If all businesses ran like this, life would be so much smoother. The very first visit was already a sign. It was one of those "we'll be there between ... " and it's often a huge period. But no, it was "between 12 and 1." They were there at 12:00. Not 11:59, not 12:01. This was a good sign. It all went like that. It was all smooth and according to plan. It was on budget, on time, and our final product was even better than we had hoped. It started in a beautiful showroom in San Francisco. We had visited other showrooms outside of the city and were ready to deal with an out-of-town shop if the price was worth it or we just felt it was a better operation. But they had lots of models to choose from at Okell's. We had an existing "fire box" and our new fireplace was going to have to fit into it. This really limited our options and it looked like we could only fit a toaster into the space. I wasn't going to spend thousands of dollars to insert a toaster into our home. When Kevin came to visit (30+ years on the job, he's seen it all), he took one look at the set up and said that we could just cut out the wall, take out the existing box and insert pretty much any model we wanted. Based on the set up (pretty simple drywall and studs), it wasn't going to cost too much more and we'd get a beautiful fireplace that we loved. Proposal, dates on the calendar, selection of model, parts, dates synced up with the inspector, and we were ready. They came to do the work and were on time, knowledgeable, experience, fast, and friendly. The whole experience was a surprising joy. We now have a fireplace we have used every single day. We got a Valor (so we didn't have to do electrical--big plus) and it's a beauty. My only complaint is that it works too well! It just blasts out the heat. We need it to be colder out! We don't need our central heating as it just pours the warmth out. It's attractive, cost-saving (well, it'll be a while ... ), and we enjoy our living room more. Thank you, Okell's, for everything. My guess on some of the bad Yelp reviews might be based on the fact that, hey, they're busy. They have a lot of business. I'm sure they get backlogged. Lucky them, they have a bustling business and it's hard to keep up and keep all customers happy. Also, our install, even though it included breaking out a wall) turned out to be pretty simple. A year later, they came out to clean the glass and show me how to change the batteries (guess I'm a slow learner). I am in Marin, but they are ok coming from the city. I would have given the place three stars but they do have a great product. Product asside, the customer service after installation, is terrible! A few days after the warranty was over the main service box ceased to work. I called to ask for in house assistance however they gave me a name of a person that would call me for help. I waited four days and no call. I called them back and finally received a call. I explained that I had done everything possible to get my fireplace to work like change batteries ect. They told me to breing in the service box as there was most likely residue from old batteries. The batteries were new, there was not residue! I was not able to bring in the service box and they would not send anyone out to help but they gave me the name of a plumbing company that would come out and take a look. The plumbing compay rep came by and told me the service box needed to be replaced after two years? i called Okell's for advice and was told the warranty was no good, so "yeah" go ahead and get a new box! $800.00+ dollars. I told Okell's and they just said "yeah". After purchasing a $6,000.00 unit all I get is "yeah". Some customer service!!!! Non existent!!!
