How can you begrudge a bar as divey as Doc's? It's been around since 1951 and has somehow survived all the business traumas...relocation, unsupportive landlords, pandemic closure. The photo shows exactly how my dirty Stoli martini was served, barely half full. Monday, Aug 10, 6:45 pm: the burly bartender kept his charm for a buddy at the bar's front. I've had much friendlier bartenders pour far more generous martinis at Zam Zam in the Upper Haight and The Makeout Room on 22nd near Mission. After getting this tiny pour, I sat away from the bar and sent a photo to friends: "Is it just me, or is this a short pour?" The consensus: "Even with a smaller coupe and olive brine, a proper martini should fill more of the glass. You got shorted." I didn't even take a full sip, lost my appetite, left it on the bar. After a lovely (and kinda pricy) dinner down the street, a cheap dive bar is what we needed to carry on the night's festivities. Doc's Clock is a great dive - dark but accented with all the typical kitchy dive bar decor and string lights. On this particular night, they were showing the 1989 slasher flick "Death Spa." I was able to get a Mezcal Negroni, and my amigo was able to get a beer on tap. Service was friendly too. read more

Doc's Clock is an SF landmark. I haven't been for some time, but expect your typical dive bar - cash only, etc. Honestly, I think the ambiance/interior has significantly improved since it moved/since I've last been there. The floors are less sticky and even the bartenders (I think Ron? helped us) are sweet. We went on a Thursday after a bday dinner at El Techo. It wasn't busy at all, maybe 10 people max in the entire place. We ordered a round of shots to close out the night - they were 2x the size of normal sizes, and much less expensive than anywhere else nearby. Highly recommend this place for fun vibes and economical drinking :) read more

My friend and i decided to come to this bar after one we went to right before, and oh did we have a shit time... shouldve read the 1 star reviews first. When we first walked in, we werent welcomed, and almost judged, just weird vibes. We each ordered a shot, then i went on to have a beer while my friend started to feel a little sick. So she went to the bathroom, and i waited about 5 minutes to go check on her. I was then in there with her for maybe 10 minutes, when the bartenders decide to tell us to 'get the fuck out.' We were very confused because we didnt do anything wrong. They then yelled at us to unlock and open the door, while banging it. I did not expect to get verbally harassed this night. We then got out and left, and they almost forgot to give my friend her card back. So yeah, i dont recommend this bar one bit unless you want a 1-star night. read more

Sometimes you really don't know the city as well as you think. Here I thought I knew the Mission until I realized that I have never been to Doc's Clock. Guess it was about time! With one of the longest bars I've seen and a fine list of on tap beers, Doc's Clock is a great little divey spot. Although quiet enough for our conversation, the place was pretty lively. From empty to crowded, people move through bar stools sipping pints and cocktails. My eyes always gravitate to people watching, checking out things on the wall and such. The little needlepoint over the register that said "Shut Your Whore Mouth" made me laugh and made me want to learn how to stitch. And if you needed more excuses to try this place, the pints were about $4.00 and it's close to BART. read more

Great dive bar! I discovered Doc's Clock while waiting for my dinner reservation at Foreign Cinema. It's a no frills and unpretentious cash only bar with cheap drinks and friendly service. The dimly lit bar has some "interesting" decorations, some of which are NSFW. It's kind of a breath of fresh air, as compared to some "fancier" bars out there in San Francisco and even in Mission District (ie. Laszlo across the street). As mentioned before, drinks are cheap. I believe they have a daily happy hour between 5-9pm, with half-priced well drinks ($3). Apparently a dentist owns (used to own?) the bar and that's where the name comes from. Has a similar vibe to other SF Dive Bars like Butter, Kozy Kar and Madrone Art Bar. Very SF. Interesting art from the locals. Reminds me of a old Casino Bar in the mafia movies. Bartenders are courteous. One of the last native spots left with neon lights. Games in the back and table seating. Alcoholic coffee and hot chocolate up there with Tommy's Joynt across town. Expresso Martini s are for snobs in Mission Bay & FiDi. One of the last neighborhood bars left. When I host internationals I take them where the locals go like this. CASH ONLY An okay spot to pass the night in the Mission. They have a long bar area and some small tables good for 2-4 people in the back. They do play music but it's not so loud that you can't hear yourself when trying to have a conversation. So why my 3 star review? There are no servers working and only had one bartender working the bar even on a Friday night, so that means 1) you have to get your drink at the bar, which is fine, but also 2) the service is incredibly *incredibly* slow... We grabbed a table when we first arrived and two of us stayed there to hold it while one friend went off to the bar area with our drink requests. Since there was only one bartender working, it was really hard for my friend to get her attention, only to be told that he needed to show the IDs for everyone drinking. He went back with our IDs and *cue another round of waiting* had to wait a while before she was free to take his order. I think the bartender must have felt bad about making my friend wait so long, since she ended up charging him only 20 bucks for our 3 drinks. I went with my go-to which was an amaretto sour, and those usually set me back at least 10 bucks at a bar, so there was definitely a heavy discount in there somewhere. We ended up chilling here for a good 1.5-2 hours though, so it was a pretty chill way to pass a Friday night in the Mission. There's also a shuffleboard table in the back so different groups of people were taking turns playing on it which was fun to watch. Let me start by saying that Lisa is the coolest bartender you can ever meet. My husband and I happened to walk upon this bar while exploring the area and we had a blast. Great dive bar for a laid-back night! We arrived around midnight on a Saturday and the place was not too busy. The bartender served us quickly and I was shocked at the prices of drinks! Monday-Saturday 6-9 PM and all day Sunday $2 PBR $3 drafts $3 well drinks $5 Chimay That's right, three dollar Anchor Steam until 9 PM 2) Once a month they have a charity happy hour and silent auction to benefit an animal cause. 50% of all drink money and 100% of the auction goes to the Charity Each of those reasons deserve five stars so I give them TEN stars. read more

Shut Your Whore Mouth. No, not you.* That's just what the embroidered sign behind the bar says. At first, I hated this bar. Not because of the sign, that's clearly fantastic. Mostly because they were screening an independent movie that seemed to consist only of shots of a passing train, a man tearing apart a chicken with his hands, and various rodeo activities. This would not have been a problem if it was not accompanied by a score comprised of DEAFENING mooing. When I yelled over the mooing, "What the FUCK is this bullshit?" The guy to my left kindly informed me that the "filmmaker" was sitting on the other side of him. Luckily, she didn't hear because of her absurdly loud soundtrack choices. Doc's Clock improved dramatically after that screening ended. The bartender is appealingly grumpy, they serve up $2 pints of PBR which are ideal for a chugging relay race (that my team won, of course), and the next film featured women in lingerie involved in a lot of spanking and eventually, dildo-sucking. Which could still be construed as offensive to some, but I found it to be marginally more palatable, as I could hear what my friends were saying. Definition of sacrilege: A bar in the Mission running out of PBR. Seriously, PBR paraphernalia all up in the whole bar, your "drink special" chalk board outside says PBR... so where the hell is it? Lame. Last night came to the conclusion with a group of folks that at night, when the bar closes, ghost cats take over the place to party. Like a ghost cat after hours. They show up, get hammered, do lines of catnip, and then pee all over the back of the bar. There has to be some logical, scientific reason for why it smells like cat pee everywhere, and this is what we came up with. Sorry Doc's, but maybe you should put out some ghost cat litter boxes or something. Doc's used to just smell like feet, but it's somehow morphed to cat pee. Not sure if that's an upgrade. On the positive side, rocked some serious Lord of the Rings pinball. I love pinball because no one really knows how the scoring works. Sometime special sounds or lights go off, a ramp opens, or the score board says something like "Secret Cave Adventure Bonus x200!!!". Everyone agrees, you just "try and hit stuff". So I have no clue what all the Lord of the Rings stuff is really, but I'm all drunk like "Yeaaa, Gimli bonus woooo!" or "Oh man, did you see that 'Ent War' ramp bonus? So sweet." Had an entertaining conversation about what the full name is of the Elf chick played by Liv Tyler and we settled on Arwen Sexyface. Her face is like smack under the right paddle and she's staring straight up at you. Kinda creepy if you're drunk enough. Between pinball, board games, table shuffleboard and PBR specials (when they aren't out of it), I do like Doc's. I ignore whatever the funky smell of the month is and always end up having a good time. Mellow crowd too, very social. Plus, it's the only bar I know of where I can yell things like "Oh man, I whooped that Balrog's ass" and not be looked at like I'm mental. read more

When I got kidnapped from a DYL by 3 beautiful women and brought here, one commented that I was either brave or insane. My response was that regardless of how the night turned out, it would make a great story! (Cop: Wait...he was "kidnapped" by 3 women? Wherever he is, he's probably thrilled and doesn't want to be rescued.) Given that I had a great time hanging out with all of them at Doc's Clock, that assessment would be perfectly accurate. The velvet curtains near the door created a classy feel, accentuated by the dim but adequate lighting. Bartenders were efficient, drinks we well-priced, and my vodka Collins was perfect. The narrow walkway along the length of the bar creates a choke point near the door, but the bar opens up in back into several tables and booths. Bathroom in the back was narrow and graffiti'd, but clean and otherwise fine; no complaints. This bar is a great place to hang out--in addition to good drinks, they have a jukebox, a LARGE pile of board games (including my favorite, Scattergories), and a shuffleboard table. I rocked a perfect winning throw one game that earned me a beer in admiration from my opponent! Next time I'm in the Mission, Doc's will be high on my list of bars to visit! TRIVIA: I have no idea the origin of the bar's name, but it makes me think of "Back to the Future", and that alone makes it cool. This place is 1.21 jigawatts of fun! read more

Post drag queen bingo, post dinner, pre sleep, I entered Doc's Clock with some work buds. The dark, slightly dingy, slightly packed full dive bar was just what the Doctor ordered post midnight for cheap brews and no thrills end to the evening pre Uber back to our hotel! Drink prices were pre modern and on the cheap for the San Fran, then again we were post buying anything other then Highlife. I slightly remember the conversations were post remembering them in the morning and the bar tender was post caring about being real polite since he was pre having to clean up after a very large full bar! Found out, through Yelp of course, that Doc's Clock had shuffleboard, so we were sold to mosey our way on over. Cash only dive bar, no surprise, great locals, not too many hipsters, and...did I mention a scrabble board?!? That's right, there's not just shuffleboard, but also Ms. Pacman, Pirates of the Carribean pinball, Scrabble, Connect Four, Jenga, Trivia Pursuit, and all other sorts of goodies to enjoy the night away. Respect is not something you demand from customers by yelling & screaming at them. So I had just had a shot & started to feel a little warmer in this rainy weather. My friend touches a beat up Trump Pinata & then our night went sour real quick. (Someone else had already destroyed it before I stepped foot into this nasty place.) The bouncers were incredibly quick to judge & started yelling at us for touching a piece of trash pinata that was left on the side. They felt we "disrespected the bar." Bunch of candy fell out but we cleaned it up. Everyone was pretty much sober. No one was being biligerent or out of hand until we started being verbally attacked. We didn't do anything but clean up the candy off the floor when we got yelled at & she kept going. The other bouncer even joined in. Really professional guys. I understand being upset someone ruined your precious Trump Pinata but you were yelling at the wrong people. We didn't know that piece of trash on the side was oh so important to you. Maybe you should have kept it behind the bar or in the back if you didn't want anyone messing with it? Reading from other reviews we're not the only ones to be treated this way by workers here. & what a coincidence, most of the other bad reviews are from or about people of color. Don't ever come here.
