My wife and I stopped by The Sea Star on a Tuesday evening to kill some time before heading over to Chase Center for a Warrior's game. The large cocktail menu here is definitely a bit overwhelming. Not only are there too many good sounding drinks that I wanted to try, but the Happy Hour special -- a 2-for-1 deal on their seasonal cocktail, made the choice even more difficult. They also have Pliny here, which is always hard to turn down when it's available. I finally settled on two drinks: the "Monkey Business", a cocktail on tap with "Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey, banana, aperitivo, bitters", and the "Umami Issues", which was "rye, sesame, miso, shiitake". While the first drink did not taste as stiff as the second drink, both drinks were strong, yet balanced. I really enjoyed the prominent banana flavor in the first cocktail and the sesame in the second. The bartender serving us was super nice, and I wouldn't hesitate to stop by again when I'm in the area. read more

Very cute Dogpatch spot. The perfect place to go to before an event at the Chase Center (only about a 10 to 15 minute walk). The decorations are cute, quirky, but also quite beautiful. It wasn't too busy on a Tuesday afternoon, so it was easy to find space for a larger group of people. The service was quick and everyone was very kind and helpful, and there was a surprisingly large menu including some non alcoholic options which I believe is always important. I got an It Takes Too which wasn't anything special, but perfectly respectable. I don't know if I'd purposefully seek this place out, but if you're in the area for a Warriors Game or Concert, it's definitely a great spot to meet up with some friends and hang out. Now normally I only write reviews for places that take my breath away for a good reason. However, the Sea Star was absolutely atrocious when it comes to customer service and creating a welcoming ambiance. The security with the glasses and bald; worst security. My boyfriend and I were walking to a car parking lot from Portola and stopped by on the way since I just wanted a drink of water so we go to the Sea Star, at first the security was nice and did his job well (I didn't have my id because my phone was dead so he let me stand near the door while my boyfriend for me water, and he even told my boyfriend to get a glass from the other side of the counter since they don't have bottled waters. Few minutes goes by and my boyfriend comes back out the door where I and the security guy was -and just like that- it was as if a switch went off for the security he started cussing at my boyfriend saying "what the f*** are you doing" and as my boyfriend was explaining the guard was saying that he shouldn't be talking back....all of this nonsense..and the kicker....he made me step inside the door to drink my water, made no sense, he just wanted to be right and create a sense of a power imbalance. Listen SF goers, go to a hidden spoke easy, go to a music festive, go to another bar/lounge/club, whatever it is....just don't go here if you want you're entire mood to be ruined by a fat bald dude. read more

Visited the Sea Star for a quick cocktail before attending an evening function on a Friday night. We walked in as a group of 5 and were able to grab a seat upon entry near the front of the bar. Upon entry, there was also an Angel's Envy rep on site that night that was providing whiskey cocktails to sample, which was a nice coincidental occurrence. I only ordered one drink, Spill the Tea, which I got directly at the bar. This drink consists of mezcal, amaro, earl grey, cola, and lemon. I've really been into mezcal recently and was very pleasantly surprised by how well balanced the cocktail was. It was smooth and the mezcal smokiness peaked out just right but didn't overpower the drink. I didn't particularly taste the cola but the earl grey also stuck out and wasn't over powering either. Never would have known of this place if not for a Chinese New Year's pop up event. This neighborhood, the Dogpatch, has evolved over the years. I remember making trips to this 'sketchy' neighborhood with my parents and brother and enjoying Southern cooking. My dad's go-to was ox tail while my brother's was chicken fried steak. Well, fast forward a few years, the number of destination businesses came and some also sadly left (RIP Aina). The ice cream place, the line worthy bakehouse, and a variety of eateries to satisfy the new habitants of those newly built apartments and condos just behind Potrero Hill. So, I came here on Chinese New Year in the late afternoon to pick up my order. I found metered parking on 21st Street near Illinois so parking is not too difficult especially after 6 pm. Walking up the block, I noticed the corner restaurant and a boba drink place before I got here. There were a few people waiting for the bus in front as I walked in. Once inside, I admired the illuminating bar and the classic vibe here. As I waited for my food, I struck a conversation with the bartender/cashier Danny who I previously met at another pop-up event at another bar. Being Chinese New Year, I asked about his pop-up and what he was selling. I learned about some cocktails that he came up with and learned that he tends the bar three days a week here. Safe to say, you'll be able to enjoy his cocktails here if you are here on the right night. There is a pool table in the back near the restrooms but I don't recall seeing any TV's here or maybe I wasn't paying close attention. The location is not far from Oracle Park and Chase Center so this can be a post-game or post-event option if you'd like a quieter vibe. Nice neighborhood sleeper. read more

This is quickly becoming my go to bar in the Dogpatch. Came here last night with a friend and had a solid atmosphere to sit and talk for 4 hours. Bartender was friendly and the drinks were for the most part solid. I got a Dutch Flight which had a strong cucumber taste. I did not honestly care for it too much and preferred my second drink, the bullet train.
