Sunday Scaries? Not if you're drinking this. You know it's a Castro Sunday when brunch is a memory, the drag queens are winding down, and you're debating whether to go home or make one last questionable decision. Enter: Last Call, dimly lit and perfectly cozy, with the kind of bartender who looks like they've seen it all, and still hands you the perfect drink without judgment. I asked for a Penicillin and what I got was Sunday night therapy in a glass. Smoky blended scotch layered gently over lemon, honey, and ginger so smooth, it practically whispered, "You're going to be fine. Just don't open Slack tomorrow before 10." It's medicinal in the best way, like if your grandmother were a speakeasy witch doctor from a Queen in Glasgow. Every sip feels like it's curing whatever twink nonsense the week tried to do to you. Your boss? Irrelevant. Your ex? Foggy. That existential dread creeping in? Drowned in peat and citrus. This isn't a cocktail. It's a reset button with ice. Pro tip: get it before the lights come up and the jukebox cuts off. It's called Last Call for a reason and this Penicillin is the prescription you didn't know you needed.

I guess it would be more appropriate for me to call this spot the First Last Call Bar since believe it or not, I had never been here before a recent atmospheric river forced me physically to seek shelter. And I do mean 'physically' because I was like Winnie the Pooh on that blustery day looking for my honey pot. It was early on a weekday, like 3:30PM, when I entered the portal. There was just a couple of guys at the far end of the long bar and the friendly bartender keeping himself busy. The TV was playing one of the Star Wars movies from the pre-Luke, Natalie Portman trilogy. I never saw that trio so I couldn't tell you why Natalie was looking like a pissed-off prom queen. I decided to try one of their specials, the $13 Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita (photo: https://bit.ly/3K1bYFE). It provided a nice, unseasonably warm kick. No arms were twisted on my second drink, the $8 Makers Mark & Ginger (photo: https://bit.ly/3KwZrvi). I was ready to face the inclement weather. Liked my experience so much I came back a couple of weeks later. This time, the TV was playing the pre-coital samurai scene from "The Bodyguard". That was more like it. A very chill place at 4PM. COCKTAILS - 5 stars...libations made to order AMBIANCE - 5 stars...heavy mellow during an atmospheric river in a compact atmospheric space SERVICE - 5 stars...nice guys tend the bar here TOTAL - 5 stars...return visits likely, Last Last Call unlikely RELATED - Exploring the Castro? The escape room is Alice In Wonderland themed and includes three drinks as part of the experience. Arrived on time for our reservation but were held in a waiting room for about 30 min before we could start. Didn't seem like anyone else was doing the escape room but it was also the week of their biz anniversary so maybe they were just super busy. Phoenix led our escape room and was such a delight. Friendly, great banter, helpful throughout the escape. The escape game is split across multiple rooms with a good diversity of puzzles. Don't want to spoil too much here but they were good challenges. Drinks we incorporated throughout and presented like test tubes that were drinkable in a gulp, kind of like a cocktail shot. Personally, I found the first two drinks to be a bit too sweet, but I liked the third, which was coconut forward. The price is definitely a bit more costly. It was $100/person for a party of five. I understand that it was an escape room + the staff + the cocktails. If you max out the party size, it's about $85-ish per person which I think is pretty solid. Still very unique and fun and glad I got to try it

I was craving a refreshing craft cocktail and got one with the Green Emmanuelle. I liked the cardamom in the Beauty Mark as well that my partner ordered. We ordered shishito peppers and mushroom bahn mi sliders. The mushroom bahn mi sliders were amazing - the quality fillings and taste of the soft bun - I was unexpectedly hit with a bite of spice from maybe jalapeño seeds left but didn't sour my experience. The shishito peppers ended up being extremely spicy as well, those are usually just a few spicy and not the majority. The roasted lemon and salt was a wonderful combo but just too spicy to eat. However, the server very kindly removed it from our bill without us asking. We order the crostini because we were still hungry and that was an absolute hit. Delicious med-soft crostini with luscious berries and sweet honey. I didn't care my hands got sticky as it was soooo good! Great experience, I would be weary if the peppers as I'm a bit spice-intolerant but everything else was spot-on.

I usually am very anti-ordering the same main, but it could not be helped. It sounded too good, and it was, indeed, a really good burger. The bun was soft and fluffy but didn't collapse under the pressure of being held, which is make-or-break for a burger. I don't want my buns to turn into frisbees. The patty was cooked through, still tender, and well-seasoned. Quite fatty, so just know that! The combo of the sauce, cheese, and onions was fantastic, but it did make for a more slippery experience. As a result, my hand was covered in sauce and juices by the end, but our waitress had wet hand wipes on deck, which was amazing. The fries were perfect, quintessential shoestring fries. We tried the Yuzu Custard, Peach & Basil Shortcake, and Rum Butter Cake for dessert, and all were solid!! It is a mission of mine (very casual mission) to find and promote restaurants that have solid desserts because it was hard to execute but also so necessary for Sweet Tooth Nation. My favorite was either of the cakes. They are honestly the same thing, just with different flavor combos. The custard actually pairs very well with the cakes. We don't mind regular bar noisiness but this was next-level.   We asked the server if we could move or if they could ask the table to take it down a notch since we were seated inside. The presumed manager then came over and rather snippily informed us she can't just "ask a table to stop talking", which of course, was misrepresenting our request and framing it as something unreasonable. IMO if you aren't able to speak to guests with kindness & understanding, even if you're unable to accommodate a request, you should maybe rethink your role in hospitality.   We settled on moving outside, which was totally fine, and finished our meal there. We then come to realize the staff knew the loud table next to us. It definitely left us feeling that their personal friendships were prioritized over kindness and respect toward other guests. The vibe was incredible, a live salsa band, everyone dancing, people having a good time... we definitely came on the perfect night! The band played until around 8 PM, which worked out perfectly because our dinner reservation was at 8:15. After dancing and enjoying the music, we got to watch one of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen from this rooftop. Such a beautiful way to start the evening. And the food made the experience even better! The menu is mostly small bites, so we ordered several dishes to share. We started with the classic ceviche, which was fresh, citrusy, and so good with the chips. We also had the al pastor tacos with pineapple, flavorful and a classic combination that worked perfectly. But the arepitas... OMG! Definitely my favorite. They come with three little arepas filled with shredded beef, and they were SO good. Between all the dishes, it was actually plenty of food for two people, and we left very satisfied. For drinks, we tried the guava and passion fruit mocktails, and both were refreshing and had really nice flavor. I've been to Cavana before, and I already thought it was a great place to stop for drinks or food before a concert at Chase Center or a Giants game. But this Sunday experience made me love it even more. It's also such a nice spot for a date night or just hanging out with friends. I don't know what the rest of their weekly schedule looks like, but this particular Sunday was a 10/10, salsa, great food, rooftop views, and a beautiful San Francisco sunset.
