What a difference a bartender makes. Even though it's been around for years, I first patronized this spruced-up dive bar last summer when I succumbed to the big lit sign that simply stated 'BAR'. It's next to That's It, the corner takeout spot that serves those humongous tortas. I sat alone at the end of a long bar where the rest of the space was populated with regulars. I thought the bartender Laura did a great job meeting every customer's needs. She made sure she made a personal connection with each one including me. I ended up having a Happy Hour special, the $8 Caribbean Sunrise, a cousin to a Tequila Sunrise that uses rum instead of tequila (photo: https://yelp.to/F88ifWInCb). It was quite refreshing with a more tropical kick. I came back a few weeks later and there was no Laura. Instead there was a young guy focused on his buddies at the far end of the bar. I honestly loved this place! The music wasn't too loud so my friend and I could easily chat and catch up. We stayed for 4 hours and there were always people around but it wasn't bustling. We each got two drinks and both were tasty and strong. The prices are also unheard of: $10/drink! read more

Time for yet another Dive Bar review! The Bission Bar pretty far down Mission Street and is propably one of the cheapest places in town. You can get a decent draft beer for below 5$ and also some cheap Longdrinks. They have a Full bar and a wide selection of liquids. The stuff is friendly and responsive and the crowd is diverse which I really like. They also have TVs where they show sports but almost nobody really cares. We needed an after hours bar & this was the place. We actually walked in & was ready to leave. The place reaked of piss & it just looked sketchy overall. The bathrooms were even worse. The only thing that kept us there was that the alcohol was dirt cheap. I recently had an event here for my dive bar group and Laura, the owner, was an "on the ball" professional. This is so refreshing for me because bar owners can be very frustrating people to deal with sometimes. Cheap beer, good times. A nice dingy bar with a pool table. It's really close to the 24th St BART station which is also a nice convenience. I wouldn't personally make a trip solely to hang out here, but whenever I'm in the mission I tend to end up here since it's pretty uncontroversial and serves as a nice place to chill before going somewhere else (or grabbing a burrito and going home). I broke a long-time rule and actually went to a DYL. Here. [This would be an odd story if the DYL was elsewhere, and I ended up reviewing this bar. Not that I haven't done similar things in the past. I just recognize that they're odd.] Usually, I'm totally cool with dive bars. Hell, at the bars in my hometown that I grew up drinking in, Bacardi was considered top shelf. I was at a bar two months ago where the bartender confessed that, in two years of working there, she'd never made a martini before. THAT'S a dive bar. There was, however, just something about this dive bar that I didn't like. I'm a Mission resident, and even I don't like the stretch of Mission that the bar sits on. The bar is narrow, dark, noisy, the bathroom walls appear to be on the verge of achieving sentience (you'll know when they do, because they'll start screaming). The drinks were cheap, and relatively strong. The pool table in the back runs true, and the cues were straight. If you don't believe me, you can ask the fellas my partner and I shellacked in a game of 8 ball. Overall, my impression was basically that I can think of a half-dozen bars in a 4-block radius that are as cheap (or close), cleaner (by far), and nicer in general. But then, I'm an alcoholic---no, wait, I'm a drunk. It means I don't have to go to meetings. Which, in turn, frees up more time for drinking. read more

Stumbling downstairs and ringing my doorbell a million times so that my roommates who STILL WEREN'T HOME could NOT let me in... Somehow stumbling to the bf's 'hood a mile away... I THINK trying to buy more beer and condoms at Kansas Food Mart. Which was most definitely NOT OPEN (classy shit)... Waking up the next morning still locked out... With no jacket... No phone... I don't watch horror movies. I have enough problems with wacky dreams as it is to add night terrors from watching some stupid sorority girl get chopped up because she WENT IN THERE. The bathroom here reminds me of one of those dirty, creepy hallways in horror movies. I half expected a hand to come reaching out of the toilet to strangle me. Thankfully, I was saved from any hands coming anywhere near my body parts. There was nothing about this place that really stood out in my mind, except for the drunk tattooed "skateboarder" named, I believe, Chad. The bartender was great, the drinks were cheap and good, and the jukebox has a lot of fun songs on it. Anytime I can sing along to "Brandy" by The Looking Glass, I'm good. This place has quickly become one of my favorite bars in the Mission. I can't believe that it took me a bunch of years in San Francisco to try this place out. The barmaids are sweet and remember me every time I come in, although it's really just been a handful of times thus far. The doorguy's always been pleasant every time I've gone, and I've never had to wait more than a couple of minutes for a drink, even on a packed Friday night. And this place is pretty local and charity-minded it seems. They were gearing up for a charity auction to be held there the last time I went in. The bathroom is pretty meh and it's one of those scary bathrooms where you're not sure if it locks and you can't sit close enough to the door whilst on the toilet to be able to hold onto the door to make sure you're not barged in on in a compromising situation. Yea, it's kind of scary, and I did barge in on someone once. Oops. And the piece de resistance? Shiloh the dog hangs out there. That's one darn cute dog. read more

Chilled at this little bar with a friend who I haven't seen in a while (like almost a year), and a co-worker. It was a pretty cool lowkey hang out place. Lights are low, they have this cathode-tube TV with the curved glass and everything that accepts cash money for video games. I seriously thought it was a small casino machine or something that I could like....win something in, but literally it was just like an arcade / video game. It's sort of appropriate in a meta way that they named this place 'Mission Bar', because I've been wracking my brain for the last ten minutes trying to think of *anything* positive or negative that made this place stand out from any other dive bar in the Mission. And then it hit me. Mission Bar is the perfect microcosm of the entire neighborhood's watering hole scene. It's a dark, dive bar on Mission serving local-ish beer and mid-shelf liquor. Cash only. Old-school punk-ish rock on the sound system. A standard selection on tap. Not that clean, but not what you'd call dirty. Mostly white hipster crowd, but grungy-hipster not pretentious-hipster.
