THE AFTER BILL IN THE MAIL

Well, since no one will answer the phone at their billing department, here I am. My boyfriend and I won a very very inexpensive trip to a hotel in Kaanapali, Maui. Unfortunately, on our last night there, my boyfriend came down with a 102 degree fever, and our flight was the next morning out of Maui back to Los Angeles. Thankfully, or so I thought, I found an urgent care that was conveniently located across the street from our hotel in a shopping center, who I called immediately and asked if my boyfriend's insurance PPO policy was in network with them. The girl immediately said yes, and I said great and sent him over there as I packed all our belongings in a hurry into our rental car to somehow try to do everything on my own with a very sick boyfriend who couldn't function whatsoever and not miss our flight. I was extremely grateful that the urgent care was able to take him so quickly, was in network with his insurance, and prescribed him medications on the spot next-door at the supermarket pharmacy. This day for me was absolute hell, not to mention my boyfriend who was severely ill. He paid his co-pay at the time and we thought at the most we may get a small bill later on. The bill I've repeatedly received in the mail for him is in the amount of $605.26. If you caught the earlier part of my review, you'd notice I mentioned that we WON a very inexpensive trip to Maui. My boyfriend and I can't afford a lot, let alone a $600 urgent care bill. With that said, it has been around five months or so since our trip. We have received this bill numerous times in the mail. We have called the phone number on the bill more times than I care to count and left more voicemails than I can remember at this point. We have not received a single call back. No one will respond to us and so now I've decided to succumb to our last resort, a yelp review. Maybe they'll notice this, but doubtful. Since you keep choosing to mail us the same bill over and over again and refuse to get on the phone with us, you'll be receiving a check in the mail for $1 because that's what we can afford at this time and because your staff are ill informed when asked if someone's policy is in network. I work in healthcare, I know how it works and what you're obligated to tell a patient ahead of time. No one informed either of us at the time that we may get an outstanding bill in the mail in this amount after the fact, no one mentioned anything about deductibles or out of state or any of the above, which had they we might have made a different decision that day. This bill is absolutely ridiculous. The fact that nobody will return a phone call is absolutely ridiculous. I'm sure all of the 4 and 5 star reviews posted here are pre bill in the mail once they've returned home. If anyone from Doctors On Call is actually reading this, know that we have tried repeatedly to get your billing department on the phone to no avail, there's no email contact provided, and a check in the amount of $1 is what is on its way in the mail. If you are on vacation in Maui and you get sick with a fever, I highly encourage you to go buy Tylenol to bring your fever down and other over the counter medications until you get home, and do NOT go to this urgent care. For reference, my boyfriend works FOR Anthem Blue Cross and has the best PPO policy through Anthem Blue Cross offered, and this is still what this urgent care is trying to bill us. So if you think you have a better PPO than he does and that this won't be you... think again.

The culprit! Look at that surface. A little water and it's as slippery as ice!

Checked in at the ER lobby. Was called in within 1 minute. Triage nurse took some info and was placed in a bed 5 minutes later. Testing, doctor visit, diagnosis and treatment provided. Discharged and was on the road less than 2 hours later. For unfortunate reasons, i definitely feel this is a well oiled machine and super friendly caring staff. Only "complaint" i have was I wish they would give a guy a warning before they tickle the backside of your brain doing a Covid test.

Mainly due to the wonderful wand expert Heather, who mapped my heart and made sure I knew what was happening every step of the way, what to expect, and put me at ease with her friendly personality. She even laughed at my jokes and told me a few of her own. In fact I was so at ease I almost fell asleep during the test! Mahalo also to the nurse who managed to put in the IV for the bubble. It's not easy to get a vein on me and she did a great job. Wish they had a vein finder in this hospital, it would make life easier for those of us who have vein problems. Everyone was welcoming, from the entrance to the exit, professional and caring, friendly and empathetic. Easy free parking. We are lucky to have such great facilities on Maui, and such dedicated health professionals :)

***4.5 STARS***…read more Recently a colleague reached out to me as his designated driver was unable to pick him up due to an unforeseen situation. He texted me needing a lift from Pali Momi Medical Center (PMMC) to his home just off Kinau Street. PMMC opened its doors in July 1989 and has been servicing Central and West Oahu. It was originally opened as Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi until rebranded as PMMC in 2010. They are conveniently located in Aiea just down the road from Pearlridge Shopping Center. It was my first time here and was impressed with the upkeep of the grounds. Because my friend just had a procedure to the day prior, a hospital staff wheeled him via wheelchair to the pickup/drop off area. I was amazed by the hospital's attention to patient's condition, consideration and service extended. Although the pickup was a fairly quick process, the setback I encountered was leaving. There were 2 parked cars in front of me and it didn't seem the cars would be leaving soon. Furthermore, the right hand lane was too narrow where I couldn't pass them. My only option was to back up and exit via the far left lane. Thank goodness there was no car behind me otherwise I would have been in a standstill. Overall, impressed with my first visit to PMMC, with the exception of their pickup and drop off area. 2026 #60

He was responsive and very caring. My son felt safe with him. The night nurse, Cliff, was also very good too! Case managers, Beth and Tainika, kept our family up-to-date with our son's status. My son still has a slight yellow tinge to his skin, but he is stable and getting stronger thanks to the great care provided by the wonderful Pali Momi staff of doctors and nurses! Mahalo!

The doctors I saw came across as dismissive, rushed, and condescending. Instead of feeling heard, I often felt like my concerns were being minimized or brushed aside. Questions were not fully answered, and discussions about my health frequently lacked the detail and explanation that patients deserve. I sought care because I had legitimate health concerns and abnormal findings that warranted follow-up and discussion. Rather than receiving thoughtful guidance, I often left appointments feeling more confused than when I arrived. In some cases, information documented in visit notes did not reflect the depth of discussion that actually took place during the appointment. What makes this especially frustrating is that the nurse practitioners and APRNs have been excellent. They took time to listen, explain why testing or follow-up was needed, and treated me with respect. My experience with the emergency department was also positive, professional, and compassionate. This review is not directed at the nursing staff, APRNs, or emergency department. They have consistently provided better communication and patient-centered care than any of the physicians I encountered. After three different PCPs and the same experience each time, I have lost confidence in the physician care provided by this clinic. Patients should not have to feel talked down to in order to receive answers about their own health.

I have lived here for 30 years and never had a single problem receiving medical care in the Castle…read moreER until after Covid when they started staffing the ER with visiting nurses from the mainland. Many stayed because they like the Hawaii lifestyle but they know nothing about Aloha. I will never go back there again unless I am unconscious. I don't like hospitals and get anxious when I have to go, and they were so rude to me they turned it into a full blown panic attack. I tried to leave and they physically restrained me after I said these words "You do not have permission to touch my body." They violated my space in a big way, and that is illegal. You don't have a right to hold a patient down who does not want to be touched. I was already out the door at that point. You're lucky you didn't get sued. Then when I was sitting on a bench waiting for my husband, and meditating to calm myself down, they threatened to call security and HPD to remove me. I'm thinking go ahead, maybe they will give me a ride. Then they did send a humongous security guard who told me I was trespassing on private property and had to leave right that moment. WTF? I'm a little old lady who didn't want to be manhandled either. He was my son's age and was polite and just doing the job they told him to do. I don't blame him. It was those nurses that caused the whole incident from beginning to end. None of them could seem to realize that all I was ever trying to do was leave peacefully. I was in the ER for a reason. Did they expect me to walk home? This was all kinds of wrong. Castle has gone way downhill. P.S. There were witnesses.

"Windward Side Aloha"…read more Castle Hospital, now named "Adventist Health Castle" is the Kailua/Kaneohe windward side of Oahu's, closest hospital services, without having to go over the Pali or Likelike. It's smaller that big brothers Queens, Straub or Kaiser but from what I've heard, people appreciate the service they were provided. Clean, pretty easy to maneuver, as you enter the main doors, a dedicated information desk manned by dedicated volunteers can help you get to where you need to go. But of course on a visit I focused on the dining options and I have to say the food was pretty good, just a simple scrambled eggs, rice and corned beef hash (canned) and a taste of their fried rice. All enough to satisfy a mornings craving for sure. Not spectacular, but satisfying. Service, like the rest of the hospital seems to be friendly, helpful and efficient. It shows in the way the employees interact with each other. Normally one does not specifically target to visit a hospital for their cafeteria offerings. This is not the case either. But if you are at this hospital on business and are hungry or thirsty, their cafeteria called the Bistro is definitely a resonable option.
