Home with my yellow socks and air cast
    Kai A.

Last night I made a very late-night cameo at Castle Hospital on Oʻahu--strictly unplanned, slightly dramatic, but thankfully very efficient. Despite the hour, the team moved quickly and smoothly, which I deeply appreciated... even while in pain and trying to keep my dignity intact. This is what I get for being a good uncle. Chasing children to go to bed, my nephew threw a broom down behind him, before I could grab him, to trip me, which worked. Before I knew it, I tripped and slipped and ended up in the hospital. Shout-out to Austin, the very handsome x-ray tech, who somehow managed to be both professional and charming while contorting me into positions my body was loudly protesting. I may or may not have been sweating at the roots, and he may or may not have tried to get my safety word out of me--purely for medical reasons, of course...but failed. He was genuinely lovely and efficient; I was just in pain. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Then came my nurse, Marguerite--an absolute gem. She calmly talked to me and she broke down the process.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But before all the air cast and paperwork, she put a yellow sock on my right foot and without thinking I announced, "Master has given Dobby a sock. Dobby is a free elf!" [[HIGHLIGHT]]She nearly hyperventilated from laughter, which honestly might have been the best medicine I received all night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]And finally, Dr. Jacobson--who pushed just enough, explained everything clearly, and somehow managed to tell me I'd broken my fibula with candor, calm, and a lighthearted touch that made the whole ordeal feel manageable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'm incredibly grateful for her honesty, her support, and--most importantly--for not making me cry. All in all: late night, great care, quick service, unexpected comedy. Deeply thankful for excellent healthcare, wonderful humans, and the reminder that even a hospital visit can have a little joy tucked into it.

This was the best cup I ever bought.

**this has nothing to do with medical care** Make sure you don't leave anything behind when you go to the E.D. I left an expensive water bottle. Leak proof, beautiful blush matte pink. Screw on top steve madden edition when my daughter was seen. I called the next day and they told me they had and they would hold on to it for me and that I could pick it up any time. I just need to go to the E.D. Well, I wasn't able to get there until 10 days later. I drove there only to be told they "can't find it". Please! Someone knew the value of the bottle and took it. It has to be a worker because they had it. Be carful! Thieves at Castle!!!!

Aww Courtney is the sweetest - she took care of me before, during, after minor surgery. Nurses are true angels..

Yes, even Superman hits a brick wall he can't break... First and foremost, thank you to my nurse, Courtney, for taking care of me as I had minor surgery here at Adventist Health Castle aka "Castle Hospital" in Kailua. If you know me, you know that I travel a lot for my work and self, tho the past year it's been more of a focus on Japan - where it's my spiritual home. However, over the past summer while taking photos in Japan I noticed (felt) a sensation on my back which I immediately knew I had to take care of stat. My medical insurance is still in America so I decided to fly back for the holidays to take care of all my medical needs (including vision and dental) before my move. The tiny lump on my back was no longer the size of a pimple as I noticed it at my favorite Onsen in Kyōtō. I had to stop being a stubborn typical alpha male lol and fly back to the states and find truth. My medical journey started with Dr. Kwan at Kuakini Hospital, who immediately knew it was more than a dermatologist procedure and I needed to be cut. Ugh. I've never had surgery in my life, so ngl it set off alarm bells in my head, especially since I'm a former athlete and still active in Judo, yet never had surgery or even broken a bone in my life, hence the Superman tag I earned in Judo:D Boom! Yet. even Superman in prime get's ailments. I was diagnosed with having a cyst on my back and was referred to Dr. Yamaguchi. I encountered at least six nurses total, along with Dr Fujiya (sp?) and my surgeon, Dr. Yamaguchi. However, Courtney was the one I connected with as she made sure I was in good hands before, during (I hope since I was out cold :x), and there she was after my surgery. I mean she even has that Tiffany/Debbie Gibson vibe! For those still reading this lol... it was an overdue procedure that I should have taken care of over a year ago. Basically a cyst near my spinal erectors that I first noticed during the end of shelter in place, but the location of it (the middle of my back) was easy to forget unless I actually felt it. Plus. Sad to say I'm one of those men in your life that thinks he's invincible until he's laying face down on the hospital bed :( It does have a happy conclusion. The pre-op was easy peasy and where I first met Courtney. I realize it's their job to be as welcoming and pleasant as possible, but I truly connected with Courtney. We talked about my travels in Europe and Japan and how she was also a fan of wanderlust. As I was chatting with Courtney about coffee in Paris... ah is when...I woke up later with the Anesthesia wearing off. Surgery complete and only recovery ahead. Family jewels intact! :D The only hiccup was during post-op when they simply wouldn't release me unless I had a ride, not Uber or Lyft, or even The Bus lol. I just wanted to Uber home but the receptionist would not allow it which I felt odd since I wouldn't be the one driving. After seven calls, four hours later, and it being midday on a Monday I got a ride from my cousin (who was at work and took off). I spoke to several nurse friends how I found it odd, but they mentioned how it's just precaution and legal stuff. Okay, but I wouldn't be driving and it didn't make sense lol. When all is said and done they only wanted to make sure I reached home safely. Everyone was kind, Dr. Yamaguchi used his precision to slice, and sweet Courtney made my heart flutter. As pleasant as a hospital stay humbled Superman could ask for, onwards with my self-care regiment and hope my next time is a long time away. God speed.

I've only been here for screening procedures but all visits including the last one have been well executed. They all follow their posted policies of friendly concern and professional service from the moment you walk in, get checked in, called up and them the technicians amd doctors you meet. If I ever need acute care I would hope the ambulance takes me here.

The line was short and moved quickly. Although I was a little late they checked me in and the Doctor was able to see me a few minutes after I arrived. Dr. Onizuka was friendly and took his time allowing me to ask questions and do a thorough exam. The girls at the front desk were pleasant and had that spirit of aloha. The facility was clean and the noise was appropriate for a doctors office. Overall I had an excellent experience. I will make more of my appointments here in the future.

I confirmed that they can bill my secondary insurance (CHAMPVA) even without a contract, but they repeatedly chose not to. I emailed Emma (the manager) and left multiple messages requesting a call back--no response. Since June 2025, I've gone back and forth between my insurance company, PIM's front desk staff (including Shayna and others), and their billing manager (Cassie). It is now November, and no one has returned my calls or attempted to resolve the issue. I've had to call week after week with no progress. I provided PIM with the exact website and billing address required to submit the claim. CHAMPVA accepts claims from any licensed provider willing to submit them, yet after months of communication, PIM ultimately decided they did not want to process my claims at all. Unfortunately, they can operate this way because there are very few CPAP supply companies on the island, leaving customers with limited alternatives. However, there are companies in Honolulu that are willing to bill CHAMPVA. With many years of experience in healthcare administration, I never expected this to be the outcome. We always submitted claims to show patients that we tried, and if coverage was denied, we discussed payment arrangements. That is basic customer care. This shows a lack of regard for their customers. Before obtaining any equipment, make sure your insurance is contracted with PIM. Otherwise, you may end up responsible for the full cost because they refuse to bill insurance--even when they can. Now I'm left with a bill and no financial support options offered during an already difficult time.

The doctors, nurses, CNA's and other staff helped make my birth experience go as smoothly as possible. They were all professional, compassionate, and gave me 5-star worthy care. My favorite part was our celebratory meal we got to enjoy on the second night of our stay. I was fortunate enough to be on my way home after only 2 nights. The reason for deducting 1 star is because my discharge experience could've gone better. We went from 2 blissful days of feeling taken care of and pampered, to feeling like we were being rushed to move out. An older Asian lady (not sure what her role is at Kapiolani but I know she definitely wasn't a nurse) came into our room and started basically telling us it's time to get ready to go. She asked my husband where our car seat was. We explained to her, per the instructions from our RN that was last taking care of us, we were waiting for the pharmacy to call to let us know my prescription was ready, then my husband will grab the car seat on the way to the pharmacy. Then we would have someone from their staff ensure that we buckled baby in correctly, and then proceed with discharge. This lady started yapping and bossing my husband around, telling him to bring the car around up front and we'll all walk out together. She then proceeded to call the pharmacy to basically tell them to hurry up and fill my prescription. Her presence caused me unnecessary stress. We felt like we were being hurried to clear out the room. On top of that, I was not offered a wheelchair to our car. I had to walk, 2 days postpartum, freshly stitched up and sore, to our car parked in front at guest drop off. Despite this experience I'm not letting it overshadow my overall experience at Kapiolani. The nurses were so sweet and supportive and made me feel like a rock star first time mom after I gave birth to my daughter in just 11 hours. I left feedback for kapiolani and I do hope they take steps to improve their discharge process for future patients.

The doctors I saw came across as dismissive, rushed, and condescending. Instead of feeling heard, I often felt like my concerns were being minimized or brushed aside. Questions were not fully answered, and discussions about my health frequently lacked the detail and explanation that patients deserve. I sought care because I had legitimate health concerns and abnormal findings that warranted follow-up and discussion. Rather than receiving thoughtful guidance, I often left appointments feeling more confused than when I arrived. In some cases, information documented in visit notes did not reflect the depth of discussion that actually took place during the appointment. What makes this especially frustrating is that the nurse practitioners and APRNs have been excellent. They took time to listen, explain why testing or follow-up was needed, and treated me with respect. My experience with the emergency department was also positive, professional, and compassionate. This review is not directed at the nursing staff, APRNs, or emergency department. They have consistently provided better communication and patient-centered care than any of the physicians I encountered. After three different PCPs and the same experience each time, I have lost confidence in the physician care provided by this clinic. Patients should not have to feel talked down to in order to receive answers about their own health.
