I have lived here for 30 years and never had a single problem receiving medical care in the Castle ER until after Covid when they started staffing the ER with visiting nurses from the mainland. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Many stayed because they like the Hawaii lifestyle but they know nothing about Aloha.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I will never go back there again unless I am unconscious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I don't like hospitals and get anxious when I have to go, and they were so rude to me they turned it into a full blown panic attack.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I tried to leave and they physically restrained me after I said these words "You do not have permission to touch my body." They violated my space in a big way, and that is illegal. You don't have a right to hold a patient down who does not want to be touched. I was already out the door at that point. You're lucky you didn't get sued. Then when I was sitting on a bench waiting for my husband, and meditating to calm myself down, they threatened to call security and HPD to remove me. I'm thinking go ahead, maybe they will give me a ride. Then they did send a humongous security guard who told me I was trespassing on private property and had to leave right that moment. WTF? I'm a little old lady who didn't want to be manhandled either. [[HIGHLIGHT]]He was my son's age and was polite and just doing the job they told him to do. I don't blame him.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It was those nurses that caused the whole incident from beginning to end. [[HIGHLIGHT]]None of them could seem to realize that all I was ever trying to do was leave peacefully.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was in the ER for a reason. Did they expect me to walk home? "Windward Side Aloha" Castle Hospital, now named "Adventist Health Castle" is the Kailua/Kaneohe windward side of Oahu's, closest hospital [[HIGHLIGHT]]services, without having to go over the Pali or Likelike. It's smaller that big brothers Queens, Straub or Kaiser but from what I've heard, people appreciate the service they were provided. Clean, pretty easy to maneuver, as you enter the main doors, a dedicated information desk manned by dedicated volunteers can help you get to where you need to go. But of course on a visit I focused on the dining options and I have to say the food was pretty good, just a simple scrambled eggs, rice and corned beef hash (canned) and a taste of their fried rice. All enough to satisfy a mornings craving for sure. Not spectacular, but satisfying. Service, like the rest of the hospital seems to be friendly, helpful and efficient. It shows in the way the employees interact with each other[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Normally one does not specifically target to visit a hospital for their cafeteria offerings. This is not the case either. But if you are at this hospital on business and are hungry or thirsty, their cafeteria called the Bistro is definitely a resonable option. read more

Last night I made a very late-night cameo at Castle Hospital on Oʻahu--strictly unplanned, slightly dramatic, but thankfully very efficient. Despite the hour, the team moved quickly and smoothly, which I deeply appreciated... even while in pain and trying to keep my dignity intact. This is what I get for being a good uncle. Chasing children to go to bed, my nephew threw a broom down behind him, before I could grab him, to trip me, which worked. Before I knew it, I tripped and slipped and ended up in the hospital. Shout-out to Austin, the very handsome x-ray tech, who somehow managed to be both professional and charming while contorting me into positions my body was loudly protesting. I may or may not have been sweating at the roots, and he may or may not have tried to get my safety word out of me--purely for medical reasons, of course...but failed. He was genuinely lovely and efficient; I was just in pain. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Then came my nurse, Marguerite--an absolute gem. She calmly talked to me and she broke down the process.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But before all the air cast and paperwork, she put a yellow sock on my right foot and without thinking I announced, "Master has given Dobby a sock. Dobby is a free elf!" Yes, even Superman hits a brick wall he can't break... First and foremost, thank you to my nurse, Courtney, for taking care of me as I had minor surgery here at Adventist Health Castle aka "Castle Hospital" in Kailua. If you know me, you know that I travel a lot for my work and self, tho the past year it's been more of a focus on Japan - where it's my spiritual home. However, over the past summer while taking photos in Japan I noticed (felt) a sensation on my back which I immediately knew I had to take care of stat. My medical insurance is still in America so I decided to fly back for the holidays to take care of all my medical needs (including vision and dental) before my move. The tiny lump on my back was no longer the size of a pimple as I noticed it at my favorite Onsen in Kyōtō. I had to stop being a stubborn typical alpha male lol and fly back to the states and find truth. My medical journey started with Dr. Kwan at Kuakini Hospital, who immediately knew it was more than a dermatologist procedure and I needed to be cut. Ugh. I've never had surgery in my life, so ngl it set off alarm bells in my head, especially since I'm a former athlete and still active in Judo, yet never had surgery or even broken a bone in my life, hence the Superman tag I earned in Judo:D Boom! Yet. even Superman in prime get's ailments. I was diagnosed with having a cyst on my back and was referred to Dr. Yamaguchi. I encountered at least six nurses total, along with Dr Fujiya (sp?) and my surgeon, Dr. Yamaguchi. However, Courtney was the one I connected with as she made sure I was in good hands before, during (I hope since I was out cold :x), and there she was after my surgery. I mean she even has that Tiffany/Debbie Gibson vibe! For those still reading this lol... it was an overdue procedure that I should have taken care of over a year ago. Basically a cyst near my spinal erectors that I first noticed during the end of shelter in place, but the location of it (the middle of my back) was easy to forget unless I actually felt it. Plus. Sad to say I'm one of those men in your life that thinks he's invincible until he's laying face down on the hospital bed :( It does have a happy conclusion. The pre-op was easy peasy and where I first met Courtney. I realize it's their job to be as welcoming and pleasant as possible, but I truly connected with Courtney. We talked about my travels in Europe and Japan and how she was also a fan of wanderlust. As I was chatting with Courtney about coffee in Paris... ah is when...I woke up later with the Anesthesia wearing off. Surgery complete and only recovery ahead. Family jewels intact! :D The only hiccup was during post-op when they simply wouldn't release me unless I had a ride, not Uber or Lyft, or even The Bus lol. I just wanted to Uber home but the receptionist would not allow it which I felt odd since I wouldn't be the one driving. After seven calls, four hours later, and it being midday on a Monday I got a ride from my cousin (who was at work and took off). I spoke to several nurse friends how I found it odd, but they mentioned how it's just precaution and legal stuff. Okay, but I wouldn't be driving and it didn't make sense lol. When all is said and done they only wanted to make sure I reached home safely. Everyone was kind, Dr. Yamaguchi used his precision to slice, and sweet Courtney made my heart flutter. As pleasant as a hospital stay humbled Superman could ask for, onwards with my self-care regiment and hope my next time is a long time away. God speed. read more

The parking was full so I parked far from radiology and they wheeled me all the way. Even gave me a tour of the garden. I had to call an ambulance that took me to castle ER, I had chest pains that hurt every time I breathe. The pain was excruciating. When I got there, they did xray and blood work. I was crying in pain the whole time. Doctor came in and told me they didn't see anything on xray so I'm good to go. I asked him to give me something for the pain, knowing I had to leave I need to be able to walk out. They gave me one right when I had to leave, it takes 45 min to kick in. Ibuprofen. I walk ed out holding on to the walls, dragging my feet on baby steps, crying because it hurts to walk. And my cries made the pain even worst. [[HIGHLIGHT]]And the staff that I passed wouldn't look at me and the few that came across me said oh no , feel better soon[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. No prescriptions and the paper I got was Unspecified chest pains. Now I'm goin to get billed from this whole situation, but nothing came out of it. I'm still at home dealing with this pains. My surgery went well then I stayed in the hospital for seven days. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The day after my surgery, I pressed the button for Nurse and inform them I need to use the restroom. Remind you, this is 6 AM. 6:24 AM. Nobody came. I called again 6:25 AM at 6:45 AM. Nobody came. I called at 6:45 AM. Still nobody came. I called again and this time is 7 AM still nobody came. I called again and 7:25 AM. Finally, the next shift came in relieved me and apologized although it wasn't their fault.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I did inform the managers because I know it's a nurse. Might other nurse that's in charge might cover their back. It was very unprofessional on their part because what if there's an elderly that needs to use the restroom. Beware of deceptive billing practices from Castle Adventist Hospital in Kailua. I had some routine tests done there on Oct 3. I have great insurance which in the past has covered all routine tests. Today I got a bill for $3400. I called their billing office and asked if they had even submitted the bill to the insurance company. Oh, no, they said. They had not submitted it yet. They were just billing me FIRST, to offer a "direct pay discount." So they said they will file the claim and let me know if it gets paid. Like they used to do. What even IS a "direct pay discount?" I already HAVE insurance, which I pay for. My insurance policy IS my "direct pay discount". Why would I even want to pay the hospital IN ADDITION to paying for my insurance? Beware of all bills from Castle Adventist Hospital. Call them first before you pay online, and ask if they have even filed your claim. This is a scheme in coordination with the insurance companies to get money from you. Sad to see this behavior from Castle. read more

Wonderful customer service!!!! My daughter recently had an ingrown toenail that just seem to be getting worse after watching a few YouTube videos you know how that goes LOL I thought she needs to have it removed wrong!! Turns out she just needed some antibiotic cream and some attention from a doctor so after a day of monitoring it I brought her here. My family and I lived in the Kaneohe area and I did not feel like driving all the way to Tripler just to wait three hours to be told to go home. So off to this hospital we went. We were checked in by a lively and cute nurse at the front who is super sweet she even switched out our mask. I never did ask what was wrong with the mess we have but she offered us new ones that were a bit more comfortable than what we had on. Total time spent at this place less than one full hour. I had a feeling the antibiotic cream they gave us for work and I did I'd like to see her toe is looking a lot better and I think after this extent of ingrown toenails perhaps you will do a better job of taking care of her toe but I digress. The customer service was top notch we were seen by an RN and then seen by a Doctor Who just advised antibiotic cream and soaking in warm water I have not read about sucking in warm water and this actually helped a lot more than I thought it would. In my mind and need to be pulled out but it didn't antibiotic cream warm water helped I would definitely recommend this to military and non-military families. read more

I came here today to do an MRI for the first time for my left knee. I had done an x-ray and they found water in my knee. Before doing physical therapy and not being able to do a steroid injection to my knee due to breastfeeding, I had to do MRI to see what's really going on with my knee. They did well to keep me calm and informed through the headphones they let me use. It took about 20 minutes. Then I got hungry and went downstairs to the lower level to eat at the Bistro Cafe. They felt it was comparatively more thorough than at another island hospital. Friendly staff. Upon exiting the ER, we looked lost and someone escorted us personally to the Bistro. Marvelous help! Loved their cafeteria (The Bistro ). Enjoyed their pecan loaf covered with an enjoyable white mushroom gravy. I arrived in an ambulance with a high fever, chills, very sick. I asked to go to Queens but they said Castle was the only one with availability. The ER was actually surprisingly thorough, after testing negative for flu and COVID, they sent me in for cat scan and ultrasound. Turns out I needed surgery and/or IV antibiotics. I ended up staying a week. In patient food- 0 stars. Barely edible After surgery they had to replace my IV. The 2 nurses tried to poke me 20 times and kept failing. It was so painful. Turns out they were using low quality/inferior needles. I developed bruises all over my arms and hands a few days later from their numerous attempts to insert an IV line. The phlebotomist had to prick my fingertip to squeeze blood out which took an hour, because there were no areas left she could draw blood from after the two nurses did that. - it bears repeating, the food is horrible. I threw up on the first bite of the breakfast they served. - saving the most important point for the last. They withheld very important information about my health that is life-threatening. I had sepsis. I only found out about this after I requested my medical records. It was on like page 47 of 66. I am now experiencing severe pain in my joints and muscles, which after researching seems to be due to post sepsis syndrome. I was not told this at all during my stay or after. I was on cautioned about sepsis or what could happen post discharge. Now I face possible rehospitalization and high mortality rates due to having sepsis. I'm in constant pain and I have not slept since I left the hospital due to this debilitating joint and muscle pain. They never once told me any of this. I had to request my hospital discharge report and read through all 66 pages to find this. I am currently looking up hospital reviews because I'm pretty sure I have to be hospitalized again and I don't want to go to someplace as bad as Castle. read more

By far the worst care I've had. Went in to the ER to ask for a simple swap to confirm if I have an active Staph infection before I take antibiotics that I already had at home as I've had quite a few staph infections over the years and recognize what it looks like. However, antibiotics is so bad for you gut that I typically wont take it until I confirm. Dr. Daniel Coquyt was adamant and refused to give me a swap and said it will turn up positive regardless if you have Staph or not because most people have staph on their skin. I understand that part, then why even have a swab at all if he's going to say something like that. A swab is used to confirm that a blister, pimple, or open wound is infected and thats all I wanted to confirm. What I found criminal, possible malpractice, and a huge issue with medical practice nowadays was Dr. said it didn't look like staph and he still went and prescribed my Cephalexin when he barely looked at as he ran out to a radiology emergency. This is just wrong in every way. I wasted my time and money going to the ER. On another occasion, my dad was released too early in 2023 after having pnemonia. 3 days later he went back to Castle where he passed. So if you want great care, think twice about going to Castle. Going to the E.R. for *any* reason can be stressful BUT, if you must go, I highly recommend you make the trip out to Castle (unless of course yours is a life-threatening situation and Castle is not the closest hospital to you). A few weeks ago while my mom and I were carpooling to work, we got rear-ended while stopped at a stop light. I was about 4 months pregnant at the time and already my pregnancy had been a rocky one. I'd been to Pali Momi ER three times before and had *FRIGHTFULLY HORRIBLE* experiences each time. (Ladies, imagine getting an intravaginal ultrasound and the tech leaving the room with the wand shoved up there like a cigarette in an ashtray... THAT is what you get at Pali Momi.) The thing is, this accident happened in Aiea... NO WAY was I going to go to Pali Momi and though we had whiplash, at the time, we were well enough to make the 15 minute drive to Castle. Upon arriving, there was free parking and free valet as well. The E.R. is at the far right of the hospital- the closest to the street entrance. When you get there, they'll need your insurance card and ID as well as your SSN. The waiting area is clean and comfortable but the wait is so short you barely get to use the charging station- Bonus! I walked in there with my two feet and was still treated with concern and unparalleled care. They checked me out and did an ultrasound to check my baby's wellbeing to make sure we were both okay. The rooms they put you in are so clean and new and accommodating and you don't ever feel like a number or embarrassed to have gone- even if your case was not as severe as someone else's. Kind and caring staff, proactive doctors, beautiful facility and short wait time- what more could you hope for from a hospital?? Castle exceeds all expectations. read more

Honestly one of the best hospitals ever. It feels like a hotel when you walk in. Everything is clean, spotless, like perfectly clean. Super minimalistic vibe which I LOVE. There's no clutter, nothing extra. It's simple, clean and modern. It's bright and the temperature is nice too. If you had a headache, I feel like just you walking in, it's almost like your headache went away. The nurses and doctors here are 10/10. Everyone is kind, professional, fast, and very very trustworthy. I've never seen anything like it TBH. And they don't scare you if there's an issue, they are very realistic and reassuring. My foot was infected (I'm taking antibiotics for it) and they said I had nothing to be worried about, which was a relief because some other doctors can be dramatic about it. But yeah everyone here KNOWS what they're doing. The vibe is amazing, and I could tell everyone here gets along and genuinely enjoys being there. Great job and thank you to everyone here!! read more

Review on Birth Center by wife: I've had all 5 of my children here. Main reasons are the the care, location and large remodeled rooms. This hospital isn't central or busy, so there were 2 times that I came in the deliver & I was the only patient. This meant I had very attentive nurses & care. Location, well I live less than 4 miles away and can make it here within 7 mins with all green lights & no traffic.((yes husband and I tested it out lol)) took me 14 mins with red lights & took backroads due to traffic down Oneawa. Remodeled huge rooms. This needs no explanation. The rooms are very big, with couch that pulls out to a twin size bed. Flat screen tv, mini fridge, tub/shower, and mauka rooms have the best view of Ko'Olau range. Special shout out to the lovely nurses that kept me comfy, my husband on point, and being there for us during this special time. Thank you Kawehi (RN) for your cheerful, energetic, professional attitude even being on duty for 5 days! Idk how someone can pull these long shifts & still be so happy!! You rock Kawehi!!!! And special Mahalo to Monica, she helped me during my contractions, keeping me comfy (regarding my pain). Thank you for making me feel comfortable during the most uncomfortable moments & I appreciate your soft spoken manner. Bless your heart and your new baby. Thank you to Ms.Jackie who was my nurse during delivery, I can tell you've been doing this for years as you had it down to a science, everything went perfect & smoothly! I couldn't ask for a better nurse to be there helping during "showtime"!! And my doctors who delivered our baby, we met for the first time that morning, I can't remember your name-(freidlander , Friedman) gosh I'm the worst--but you, were amazing I wish you were my OBGYN from the get go...everything went so perfect, They called you at 5am, you arrived shortly after , think I pushed 2x and baby was out & less than an hour later the entire room turned back to Normal and we had a baby in the crib! Everything was so fast, love it. So fast we were out the next day...lol. But we're done with the baby's, had everything tied up. Thank you Castle! read more

I had two separately timed knee replacements perf by Dr. L. Rasmussen. The Doctor did an excellent job of both my surgeries and provided me with a menu devoid of sugar and carbohydrate for three weeks after surgery to prevent infection. The surgical staff was extremely pleasant, caring and helpful. The admitting staff was also very efficient and there was an excellent cafeteria to administer to my husband's needs. I flew into Oahu from Maui, and flew home the same day. I had timely follow-up from the office and could call anytime for advice or prescription renewal. Dr. Rasmussen also arranged for six weeks of PT in my area post surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Rasmussen. read more

I have a medically complex child so we are no stranger to hospitals and medical facilities and I have never been so shocked by such negligence in a medical setting as I was when I had to take my child to Adventist Health Castle during our recent trip to Oahu. I can't speak on the entire hospital as a whole and I'm sure there may be some great providers there but the emergency department needs some serious revamping and new employees. Firstly I had a nurse insist my child with a rare blood disease/bleeding disorder could have ibuprofen (he can't because of the bleed risks) and the "doctor" who "treated him" didn't even step an inch into the room! She literally stood at the doorway and told me that a CBC was pointless even though his hematologist told me to request one or have them call his regular hematologist and refused to do anything. He's also immune compromised and she didn't so much as listen to his lungs when he had a nasty cough that could easily and quickly turn into something serious and difficult to treat. The following day (less than 24hrs later) I took him to Kapiolani and sure enough his labs showed MULTIPLE CRITICAL VALUES which the ER physician would have known had she listened to me, his medical history or consulted with his regular specialist like I had requested her to do and ran a simple CBC. That doctor should not be practicing medicine on living patients and is better suited for working in the morgue where there's no risk to patients lives or health due to her incompetence. If you're looking for a place to get in and out of quickly this is the ER for you but for anything beyond something very basic I would 100% not recommend! read more

My mom recently underwent hip replacement surgery here. While the staff and physicians were very nice, there were always issues with communication. For instance, we were given a thick packet of information, which had mom's discharge prescriptions inside. The day of her discharge, we went down to fill them and were told they expired. So, had to go back up, intercept the nurse to get her to get new ones. Apparently, there should have been a verbal instruction to fill the Rx immediately. This was only one example of the poor communication here. There were several others, but I won't elaborate on them here. Other than that, this is a very nice facility. Nice cafeteria downstairs, and there's a small coffee stand right by the entrance, which seems to never be open. read more

ER was great. Quick and thorough. I was admitted to the telemetry unit because they said they needed to monitor my heart. But when I got to the 2nd floor some of the nurses who cared for me weren't even cardiac trained! They were nice but they didn't know what they were doing. read more

On 2/12 I had a heart attack. The fact that I can write this review is a testament to the nurses, doctors, aides, and staff that helped me throughout the whole ordeal. From the moment I was in the ER, the nurses and doctors did everything to diagnose and make sure I was getting the correct care. All I remember was the flurry of people in and out. My ER nurse, Cristina, is my angel and my advocate. She made sure that my concerns and fears were heard and that everything that was being done to me or given to me was fully explained. When my blood tests confirmed heart attack, she was there for my husband & I to explain what would happen next. The staff from the cath lab are amazing. I started crying as I was wheeled away from my husband and they all made sure to comfort and soothe me. They ALL did. When I woke up, they explained what happened and that I would be admitted to the hospital. The nurses who took care of me when I was admitted are such hard workers. They attended to me every time I called, held my hair as I threw up, tried to make me as comfortable as they possibly could, and were KIND. During my stay, I had a visit from Indie, an adorable dog who lifted my spirits. The chaplain gave me a visit and stayed with me and listened while I spoke about my experience. It really did help. I guess what I am trying to say is that if any of you or a loved one EVER has to go through what I did, I would hope that you would get the same excellent care that I received from Adventist Health. read more

This is a gem of a hospital located on the Windward Side of O'ahu. Because of its size, it's so easy to navigate. The staff, whether it be administrative or medical, have always been kind, helpful and professional. The faculty is clean, modern and has a very light feeling. Bring a jacket or sweater to keep yourself warm as it is very chilly. read more

Worst Experience of my life. My wife was pregnant and admitted into Castle ready to give birth for the first time. However the nurse related that the Doctor was at home in town and would come later at their own time, keep in mind we called throughout the night giving updates of my wife's contractions notifying that we are close to giving birth. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As we dealt with the nurse, she was very nonchalant and seemed as if she did not care.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Her attitude made us feel as if we were not important, and that we were just another patient she had to deal with before she got to go home and leave this place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When my wife is pregnant next, we could be right next to Castle Hospital and the babies head could be begin to come out. I am driving to Kapiolani Hospital because this IS THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER BEEN THROUGH. The nursing and medical staff is outstanding, but this review is for their Medical Center Call Center. The call center serves 40 doctors affiliated with Castle Medical and it takes up to 10 or 15 minutes, or more, waiting on hold, to get through. When you call your medical provider, it does not go to their office, but to the call center. They set up appointments for you and I assume pass messages to the office. This is a very inefficient system and definitely not customer-friendly. Hopefully, with enough feedback, this will be changed so patients can call their doctor directly. read more
