The moment i walked in i felt unwelcome. I continued to go to Jessica who groomed my Maltipoo. My Maltipoo had long beautiful hair and for7 months she groomed her. She asked me to attend a "brushing class" which i did for free w her. I always felt confrontational w her like she didn't approve of me keeping my dog's hair long. Well it became apparent when she Hung up on me! I feel this was extremely unprofessional. I specifically asked her not to shave my dog and she did a 1 inch cut which to us is essentially shaved. Here are the pics. What's so bad is i feel she intentionally did this because she did not want to keep brushing my dogs long hair she said it was torturing her(the dog) and we weren't managing the hair well. I brush my dog's long hair w a wire brush and metal comb and then cut whatever knots out she has with scissors which i told her to do but her response was that will look choppy! So after expressing my displeasure of her decision to cut very short my long haired pup she hung up on me! Instead of cutting her hair so short, she should have said i am not comfortable with brushing and grooming her anymore and you should find a new cut. Instead she decided on her own to do this! And when my hubby picked our pup up that day, Jessica immediately said "she isn't shaved " which was apparently on my husband's shocked face, yes she was! Im not asking for my Money back but i do feel the owner of this "woman ran business" all woman only work there, should apologize for the unprofessional manner in which her employee conducted herself. Do not hang up on customers. In the future, Maybe take a class in how to be more professional in dealing with unsatisfied clients read more

Kathy, ever since you returned my call to let me know, Keely would no longer groom Buddy due to his behavior I have been really upset.My first appointment for Buddy was only 6 months after Keely started grooming. Buddy loved Keely. I asked Keely how Buddy was after each visit. Not once did she say he tried to bite her. I brought Buddy every 5 weeks for a couple of years, and the only thing Keely had to say was, "Buddy lays down when grooming" I told her to just do the best you can, since Buddy had an enlarged heart and gets tired easily. My last visit was right before Keely went on maternity leave. Mind you, I made all my appointments one year in advance.I asked Keely after 4 different grooming appointments if there was another groomer for the rest of Buddy's appointments. Buddy's last appointment with Keely said she could not find anyone there to groom him while she was on maternity leave. I had asked Kathy, the owner, to please let me know if she finds someone to groom Buddy while Keely was on maternity leave. Kathy informed me she would be hiring more groomers. I truly believed Kathy. The next thing I get is an email from Dog Day Afternoon stating that the rest of Buddy's appointments have been canceled. I did not hear anything from Kathy, nor Keely. I called and left a message for someone to call me back to schedule Buddy for an appointment. Kathy called back, informing me Keely didn't want to groom Buddy due to his behavior and that he bites. My question to Kathy was, "Why didn't Keely say anything about Buddys behavior in past years of grooming Buddy?" Kathy said,"There must have been a miscommunication between us. " After years of Keely grooming Buddy every 5 weeks, not once did she say anything about Buddy's behavior, but said Buddy was a good boy, and Buddy likes to lay down when she grooms him. Keely was always polite and sweet to me. Keely would have Buddy groomed in an hour and a half. If Buddy's behavior was so bad, why wasn't anything said at our last visit? How can Keely groom Buddy so fast if he is bitting and misbehaving. I think the miscommunication is between Kathy, not Keely. Kathy was extremely rude when she said I needed to get a vet to sedate Buddy to groom him. Who would say such a horrible thing to a good customer that respected both Kathy and Keely. Then Kathy states I haven't had Buddy there since July, yet Kathy didn't find someone to groom Buddy, and Kathy sent the email stating all of Buddys appointments were canceled. I informed her that Buddy was diagnosed with a form of cancer called scarcoma on the back of his leg and had two surgeries between Decembe 12 and January 23rd. Kathy didn't care.I was in shock when Kathy said, " Maybe I should find a different vet that grooms and sedates dogs after I said."My vet doesn't have a groomer. I was so shocked by the owner. Kathy, I couldn't believe Kathy was so heartless and mean. This is why I am writing this review." I believe Keely did not make this decision not to groom Buddy, but Kathy refused to groom Budfy because Keely knew I couldn't afford the price increase, so Keely kept my visits for Buddy at $ 75.00. It is just a few days since I talked to Kathy, and I am truly upset with all the hateful things she said about my 9-year-old Buddy. I can't believe the owner, Kathy, is so unprofessional. How can Kathy stay in the business being such a rude person. I see her nice to people spending a lot of money. l know why she is short staff now it is because she is all about the money and not dedicsted customer like me.I think the return call to not groom Budfy should have been from Keely groomed him for years. Keely was always a sweetheart to me. Buddy loved Keely and was used to her. I wonder if Keely even knows Kathy would not let Buddy come back. I will never refer anyone to Dog Day afternoon. I just went here today to have my dog groomed. I give this business three stars, because the groomer was kind and did a great job. Whoever was out front working the desk was very rude and curt. This was my first time at the "boutique" so I was taking my time looking around the shop. The woman walks over to me in a huff and says sharply, "ma'am, may i help you?" Then when I went to pay for my cute, but over priced items, this same lady just kept her head down while she was checking me out. Not even a thank you. THEN they didn't call to say my dog was finished. So i drove up after a few hours and they said. "Oh, she's been done." I was happy with the grooming. Yes, they have good food and cute items, but most of it can be found online. The most important thing is good customer service which is lacking. Even when I returned, the woman could have apologized. That goes a long way. I will not return to this business and I will suggest to my friends that they don't go to this place. read more

We had our Great Pyrenees in there for grooming and they let her slip off of a table and tore her ACL and now she limps and has to wear a special brace all the time. read more

They have a new phone system so they don't have to answer the phone. I had to waste gas to drive there to find out there are no available appointments for months. They really do a great job of grooming. It's a shame they treat long time customers this way. read more

You know, I have fed my cats one little mini-meal from my vast array of samples I picked up at DDA but I am completely comfortable giving this place five stars. I mean, the kittehs *really* liked their snack. I kid, I kid. But Cathy and Mary took a lot of time to talk to us about what our special little jerks need, and it's a lot, and were respectful of what we were trying to do. They didn't even let us buy anything, they actually told us to put something back, they just loaded us up with samples (because they have a lot of options!) and told us to research it and see what we thought. There was a lot of helpful information we were given on the spot and I trust them. They definitely also asked what we were looking to spend (which is obviously the Earth and possibly the moon for our little bbs but they didn't know that) and seemed like they were very empathetic regarding all of our needs. I will def be recommending Dog Day Afternoon, despite its speciesist name (kidding!), and will be going back myself thanks to the knowledgeable and friendly folks I met there. Just wanted to take a minute to commend this business and the people who work there. My sister and I were driving and noticed a dog walking alone outside of the daycare. Thinking the dog got out, we stopped. Immediately, the dog comes running to the car and jumps inside. It was pretty obvious the poor guy was scared and was glad to see some people. When we went inside the business, the woman working loaned us a leash for the dog and let us bring him inside. She then was able to scan for the microchip and kept the dog until the owner could be located. She really went above and beyond for a lost dog. She also informed us the next day that the dog had been reunited with his owner. I'm not from the area, but if I were, I would not hesitate to take my dog here. The staff really has a love for animals and cares about their four legged clients! read more

After my illustrious food service career, I went into animal rescue. Which is how I ended up with the lovely lady in my profile picture, and a less lovely teenage Doberman. My Lab eats Purina Dog Chow and is happy with it; she once ate a log of firewood with no adverse effects, so I figure cheap food can't hurt. The Dobe, however, has an intestinal tract filled with landmines and can only eat grain-free, mostly meat product (and consequently difficult-to-find and expensive) food. So after being too close to running out of his food to order it online, I googled his brand and it led me to this store. As "pet boutiques" go, they don't have too much in the way of toys, but they do have some of the more upscale ones. As far as the selection goes, if you have a small or not destructive dog, there are lots of cute toys. For large dogs/strong chewers, there are a couple things, but not much. They mostly carry gourmet/raw diet/organic foods you generally can't find at PetSmart or PetCo. A note on the products in general: they're not cheap. The prices are comparable to any other place that stocks these kinds of things, though. And as I was grabbing bully sticks and chicken livers, the staff member working was helping two ladies with dogs that had allergies but were feeding Ol' Roy find better foods. Just like with humans, McDonald's has a different effect than an organic spinach salad. But I think the expense is well worth it in general, and especially if you have a dog with special needs. They do also do grooming, but neither of my dogs require much in that way, so it's not a service I'll take advantage of. They actually didn't have the brand of food I was looking for, but I chose a comparable food to get us through. The best part, though, was when I mentioned that I was looking for that brand. I was told they can special order for you and they do get weekly shipments. Will definitely continue to come here; I feel better supporting local businesses rather than ordering my dog food online, and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. read more

They have a selection of excellent products for cats and dogs that can't be found at the big name places. I just got home from DDA and I am in love with this cute little shop. From what I could see they carry quality products ONLY. My little Maltipoo was having a problem with his food and the lady working was so helpful. She gave me 3 samples of food and when I got home I let him pick out which he wanted to try and he loved it. Having just moved into the area, I was delighted to find this boutique store, which is the only one in Southern Illinois that carries my dog's brand of premium food. I didn't want to have to drive out to St. Louis or order from Amazon, which was almost double what I was accustomed to paying in my old location! I feel so blessed to have stumbled through their doors. I recently purchased a GSD for my husband for his birthday and boy did I realize how much help I truly needed. After doing tons of research on nutrition, exercise, obedience, and habits I walk through door feeling completely overwhelmed and frustrated, then I met Mary. It funny, God truly has a way of reminding you how you are blessed! Mary has went above and beyond to help us get Bahston on right track. I can finally say that I do not dread going to the pet store.
