This is definitely one of my favorite book stores I've been to. I loved the way this book store was organized, especially the rare and vintage book sections they had. Everything was clearly labeled and the selection was amazing. It was easy to find the books we were looking for, as well as a couple books I had never heard of/thought of reading. The prices were also reasonable for the used books. I spent awhile in here just looking around everywhere and I could have spent even longer. While visiting the city of San Francisco came across Dog Eared Books and decided to stop in to see what they had to offer. The bookstore was small and pretty busy with customers reading and selecting books to purchase. I walked around the bookstore to see what would catch my eye and they had so many good books to choose from. Walked over to their clearance section and found two books that peaked my interest. Ended up purchasing, the portrait of Dorian Grey and animal farm. They we're both a steel at a discounted price. These two books were on my list of books that I've been wanting to read, and now they have been added to my personal library. The employees here are welcoming and friendly. They are also very busy, keeping the store while organized and appealing to the eye. read more

The coolest bookstore I've ever been to! My friend and I were on a mission for books to add to our "to-read" lists, and found this really cool store via google. It's nice to see small business bookstores doing so well, because it was really busy here! I wish we had more businesses like this where we're from. Small inside, but room to navigate around. I loved the Staff Picks and science fiction sections the best. There's also a decent fiction selection as well. At check-out, we ended up getting 4 books each! So there are some really great finds here. We'll definitely come back! This was such a fun shopping experience. read more

Probably my favourite indie bookstore in the city (which is saying a lot)! There's a really well-balanced mix of used and new stuff, and a few small gift items, but most of their stock is *just books*. I've always been able to find unexpected treasures in every trip in, and the prices are well balanced. This bookstore is the place I use to walk by when I use go to the corner store across the street to grab an adult beverage on the corner of 20th street and Valencia. I would pass this bookstore going to Mission Playground or the alley. Over the years my curiosity grew what was inside the book store as many people frequently roamed inside. Since it closes late I decided to give it a whirl years ago and still come here to find some rare books. Dog eared books is an independent bookstore ( I thought it is was a pet store when I first saw it) which has books of all kinds. Been to a lot of mom and pop bookstores and this one takes the medal so far. The staff here is amazing and so helpful even when there are crowds of people inside. I love the interior and the smell of fresh waffle cones next door. It makes browsing for books 100x better. Cute little stop on Valencia! They've got small sections of genres like history, science, philosophy, sci-fi, and animals / nature. There's also a little children's book section at the front. Even though they don't carry zines anymore (I get it, zines weren't made with profit in mind), I still love this independent book store, or just book store in general these days. I would say they're friendly and helpful, some staff warmer than others. It gets really busy in here on the weekends, so staff has to deal with a lot of traffic. Love their free bin, keeping this local bookstore accessibly priced for all the income brackets. Located in a convenient and vibrant neighborhood. Parking is sparse on weekends. Ride your bike, take public transportation, find you a book to read and a sandwich at Rhea's to bring to Dolores Park. read more

I love supporting an indie bookshop and maybe this was a particularly bad day for the staff at this store but my friend and I did not have the amazing experience that everyone else spoke of. For whatever reason, the staff were really cold to myself and my friend. Awesome local bookstore on Valencia. They have a huge collection of books and zines, and all of them were labeled and categorized perfectly making it easy to browse. They had a section of just San Francisco-based books which I thought was very cool. The employees there were all very friendly and helpful when I asked if they had a specific book I was looking for. Based off community word about this place had high expectations. It seems like everyone has found the staff to be amazing along side a vast selection of new and used print. However my visit today was nothing like the experiences shared online and by friends. I went in search of a couple queer books. When I entered the store the cashier made eye contact with me and I smiled and mouthed a silent hello. Their response was a blank almost agitated stare. As I was browsing the LGBTQ sections the cashier passed by me to return some title to the shelves behind me and again I tried to be polite and gave a friendly nod as I stepped out of the way for them to pass by. They still did little to reciprocate or even acknowledge my presence. Upon checking out I felt extremely rushed and had wanted to ask about selling a used book but the attitude by the cashier was very short and not very friendly. For my first time coming into Dog Eared Books this was not at all a pleasant experience and it's not close by. I like wont make the trip across town again since the book I did end up buying was even more than I could have paid at the bookstore just a few blocks from my home but I didn't want to walk away from an hour excursion empty handed. It appears the same cashier i had this negative experience with has this same attitude all the time. The business owners really should address this very poor customer service as it's now going on at least 4 months of customers complaining about this same long blonde haired individual. read more

Been here a couple of times, on visits to the Bay Area, and will now make it a point to add to my itinerary every time. Dog Eared Books is maybe my current favorite bookstore, even though I like in New York City. Even though it's not the largest, it has everything I need and more. While on a recent trip, I went to a couple of other larger indie bookstores in the area and was unable to pick up the book I wanted. Dog Eared saved me as I really really wanted to get something specific for the long flight back. In addition to the great selection, the staff is incredibly friendly. They're attentive and well informed. Once in a while, I'll be somewhere where I feel bad asking questions because I don't want to be a bother. I never feel like that here. My only quibble is that I couldn't find them on bookshop.org. When I'm purchasing books from bookshop, I'd love for them to be an affiliate so a portion of my purchase can go to support them. Serendipity. I saw the sign, like a beacon, beckoning me across the street. I went in and immediately was greeted by a friendly face who told me that I can stow my coffee behind some shelves in the front so that I can browse unencumbered. And then there's another face, kind with a curious look, a wag of their tail, a cursory sniff--satisfied that I am of the friendly-sort, permitted me to be her friend for the short stay at this bookstore. Yes, I didn't stay too long as I had to get back to work, but I will be back, and maybe even bring my own little fur monster along for the return visit. This was a really fun place. Did I just say that about a book store? Pros: ambiance, selections, service. Cons: I don't live closer to them. I walked in to escape the consumerism of the other shops and fell into an oasis of friendly service and beautiful books and stationery. I didn't actually think anyone would have a road map of California on the shelves. Oh crap! They did. Fun notebooks, pens, markers, stickers, post cards, and a comfortable selection of books at reasonable prices are all around this fantastic shop. Cute little bookstore! They didn't have the exact book in the series we wanted, but the staff was happy to order it for us. The kids love to rummage through the free books that are sometimes in a box out front and have occasionally found one to take home with us. They sell used books and also accept donations. We recently donated a bag of kids books and are happy that they'll get a second life with someone else! read more

I'm a bibliophile, travel quite a bit and always visit independent bookstores wherever I am. I've been to SF before and visited Dog Eared Books before. But after today's experience, I'll never again. There's an unspoken rule when you're browsing books--you don't come between the browser and the bookshelf, unless you do so with a polite, 'Excuse me.' Today, the woman working the counter who was re-shelving books, despite a stack of others, insisted on getting in the two feet between me and the shelf I was browsing. Literally, I had to back up to avoid full physical contact. Not only did she do this once, but at least three times. No excuse me, no apology, nothing. I thought about putting the one book back I was going to buy, but it was rather unique and I wanted it as a gift. At checkout, her attitude toward me was palpable. In complete silence we went through the checkout process, not a word. Then, she asked if I needed a bag. I said yes, and with an audible huff, she tossed the book into a bag hastily, flung it on the counter and walked away. No thank you, no have a nice day. Nothing. Exemplary! Look, we all have bad days, but being rude isn't going to garner any good, much less with your customers. So, to said rude woman with the pink sweater, have a nice day. I sincerely hope your weekend gets better. Be nice, try being polite--it just feels better. read more

Selling books here is so meh. The don't want my hardbacks, they don't care for my softcovers. They won't take the bestseller I bought two months ago at Browser. They aren't interested in the Anne Lamott I just picked up and read at Book Passage. You should have seen the buyer's eyebrows when I brought in an old Stephen King. (Not much of a poker player, that one.) Niche cookbooks and a mint condition language learning guide were handed back to me. I brought in a vintage first edition and the girl tells me it has a crack in the spine. Given that the book was older than me (which is saying something), and in otherwise perfectly readable good condition, I found her assessment to be petty AF. Especially given we were standing inside of 'Dog Eared' Books; the very name alluding to book damage. I don't doodle in the margins, I don't highlight, and I don't dog-ear my pages. I treat my books with respect. And every time I have stopped by here, I have had my books rejected for one reason or another. Also every time, I walk my small stack of reading material over to Fabulosa in the Castro, where they will invariably buy the majority of my offerings. The rest I use to stock up the LFLs or save for eBay. I'm on a library kick now and am happy to report that I won't need to hoof it down to this place any time soon. Woof. read more

So I called first and ask if they would be interested in vintage books I have and they said they had a buyer on til 8 would be happy to take a look at what I had so I went over there and put my books on the counter he said he would go threw them I walk around observing him look them up witch I already new what they sold for on ebay after 10 mins he called me up and said he was interested in these four books witch had dust jackets on the at least two of the four did on ebay the total cost of those four books is around 1250.00 he offer 25.00 for them and I said no the Robert Frost book he said oh well it's not the first edtion witch is a 4500.00 book I said I understand it's the tenth edition worth 750 oh no only 550 witch he was offering a whole 5.50 for that's crazy to me I understand business costs 8to 10x mark up to keep the doors open but it was pack in there and he was making money to offer so low was an insult I went a head and sold him 450 books for 18.00 dollars he hand me cash no receipt proof he screwed mo over so what out this guy not good business at all complete rip off scam scam scam don't let him steel your books and mark them up 200 percent save your self there better more fair books stores in town what a joke read more
