I've grown up with a lot of martial arts in my life. From all my training, I have seen many kinds of teaching, but two systems have stood out; one is our system here and the other was a very traditional southern kung fu kwoon. For me, the traditional path is best. These systems of martial arts were developed over centuries. In a world of sports fighting, we often forget the "martial" aspect. These systems were developed by oppressed people for self defense from outsiders who had conquered their lands with large militaries, like Okinawa. The systems in the dojo blend beautifully together. Both systems extend from Okinawa over hundreds of years. These systems were developed from roots that existed before our country. The techniques have been tested across sundry generations. They work. The system is also developed to teach martial skills - the ability to defend yourself - without the need for you to hurt yourself sparring with lots of people. The systems work. Come try out the dojo. Moeller Sensei will introduce you to everyone. It's a welcoming environment for everyone, no judgment. If you're looking for a Cobra Kai kind of dojo (great series on Netflix) then this is NOT it. This is about thoughtful development of skills that meet your abilities and then the work to increase those abilities. It's excellent. You will develop. You will progress, and progression is earned on merit. There are no testing fees or anything like this. Moeller Sensei does not run the school to make money; he has a full time job. Moeller Sensei runs the school for his love of sharing two traditional systems of karate. Come join us for a class.

The kids classes are energized and playful, with a strong sense of respect for one's teammates and learning. I'm deeply impressed with Sensei's care of every single student that's ever trained here, whether it was for 2 months or 20 years. Many parents have said they see an incredible kindness in our dojo not found in others they've practiced at. I would say Sensei Moeller embodies what it truly means to be a martial artist. His teaching style provides a very practical and fundamental way for each student to find the ability to achieve the same for themselves.  Sensei welcomes new students try a class or two before joining. Normal workout clothes are fine. We have students that range in age from 5 years old to 81.

GENERAL ASSESSMENT Our overall assessment is that Shaolin…read moreInstitute does an amazingly successful job fulfilling its promise as a learning experience for both the body and mind. As we have so far experienced it, Shaolin Institute indeed teaches a "way of life" in which students can experience gratifying physical achievement, whether in Tai Chi or Kung Fu, while also exercising and expanding mindfulness. One of the most appealing aspects of Shaolin Institute is the frequent reference before and after classes regarding how specific cultural, historical, medical, and scientific achievements are directly relevant for learning and appreciating martial arts. TEACHING ASSESSMENT It is impressive that Shaolin Institute exceeds expectations in basically every category used to evaluate teachers. Below are our summaries of Shaolin Institute's multifaceted teaching strengths. CURRICULUM * SI teachers follow the SI curriculum. * SI teachers choose activities for each student relevant to the SI curriculum and each student's level of achievement. * When feasible, SI teachers sometimes helpfully group students together to learn and practice as a group the forms they have previously learned. INSTRUCTION * SI teachers provide direction so that each student knows what to focus on during class. * SI teachers present new forms clearly and logically, and helpfully demonstrate new forms. * SI teachers provide feedback and re-teach forms when necessary. Teachers provide opportunities for students to practice new forms both with and without supervision. MOTIVATION * SI teachers show genuine concern for the students. * SI teachers project a positive, encouraging tone for the classroom experience. * SI teachers establish a level of difficulty, suited for each student's level, which encourages success. SI teachers provide good verbal praise, as well as critique as needed. COMMUNICATION * SI teachers always demonstrate enthusiasm in what they are teaching. * SI teachers explain and demonstrate forms clearly. * SI teachers respond graciously and substantively to questions. EXPECTATIONS * SI teachers communicate expectations to students. * SI teachers listen to students' feedback during class and adjust their teaching pace and content accordingly. * SI teachers encourage students to participate inextracurricular community opportunities, which isimportant for the students' confidence as well as the school's exposure. METHODOLOGY & MATERIALS * SI teachers often vary how they conduct classes, for example by describing the forms, including their origins, applications, etc., and/or by physically demonstrating the forms. Both methods are helpful, especially for students who learn in different ways. * SI teachers sometimes provide supplemental resources, such as video recordings of the classes, which can be exceptionally helpful for students who want to practice at home. EVALUATIVE ACTIVITIES * SI teachers monitor and give feedback on student progressduring each individual class. * SI teachers give oral evaluative comments, as well as sometimes grades or scores. * SI teachers are available for and sometimes proactively create opportunities for one-on-one progress discussions with students. CLASS ENVIRONMENT * SI teachers clearly communicate requirements for attitude and behavior, notably by emphasizing the SI student creed and the rituals of class beginnings and endings. TEACHER-STUDENT INTERACTIONS * SI teachers make an effort to know each student as an individual. * SI teachers routinely work to promote positive self-image in students. * SI teachers routinely create a classroom climate in which students are encouraged to grow and assume personal responsibility for their growth. LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOR * SI teachers are observed routinely cooperating graciously with their teaching peers, demonstrating authentic respect for one another. * SI teachers are often observed sharing ideas and methods with their fellow teachers. * SI teachers are observed regularly seeking to advance their own growth. This continuing education, observed by the students, is motivating to the students and demonstrates how we are all learning and growing.

My child genuinely enjoys attending classes, looks forward to going each week, and has built wonderful friendships through the dojo. What stands out most is how supportive everyone is -- especially the senseis. They go above and beyond to support children in ways that extend beyond what you might expect from a traditional dojo. It is clear they have a genuine love and respect for the practice, along with a personal investment in helping children grow into confident, respectful, and compassionate individuals for the betterment of society as a whole. As a parent, it has been wonderful to find a place that not only teaches self-defense, but also emphasizes focus, discipline, moral development, kindness toward others, and the importance of only using their skills to protect themselves or others when necessary. The values taught here extend far beyond martial arts, and we are incredibly grateful to be part of such a supportive and positive environment.

I have been studying (several) martial arts for nearly 40 years, and have been in many different &…read morefine schools with many fine instructors. Let me just say that there is a difference between those who merely instruct and those who truly teach...Sifu Francis Fong and his people...Mentor!! I will put this succinctly for those who do not wish or need to read more...This is the School, This is the Art, and most importantly, This is the Man that convinced me to retire from 10 years of teaching my own classes as a midlevel black belt...to begin all over as a white belt again! As I mentioned, I have been teaching (martial arts, medicine, and surgery) for many years now, and have observed that there are many talented people out there who can DO...but it is rare to find one who can (really) DO and TEACH. No matter what your level or background, you can gain from this place. I take the teachings from this discipline and apply it to my surgical teachings. This has real world, everyday applications...you just have to notice. Just to be clear, it is not merely Sifu Fong, but his whole group of instructors who make this the Complete Package. I would say that one of the less common attitudes among martial arts schools is the encouragement (by this one) to "cross train" in other disciplines. Most find this idea to be threatening to their own doctrine (a bit of insecurity, in my opinion). Sifu Fong not only encourages this, but mandates this in his higher ranks. The reason is simple...to appreciate what you do, you should look at it from the eyes of others. There are many advantageous attributes that other disciplines offer, with which one might build or simply make themselves familiar in case of future encounter. It makes us stronger in the end. No matter what your background or familiarity...step in the door, and you will be made welcome. This does not end in the lobby...this is real. This is a place for all to learn and grow. Many studios try to impress the newcomers and wind up causing intimidation...again, (I believe) insecurity...None Here. These are my primary reasons for traveling across the country (at least) twice per year despite my (often) crazy schedule. Oh...(P.S.) did I mention the great Stress Relief?! If you are in the neighborhood and want to see and "feel" something truly remarkable and rare...stop in...I did...and stayed (going on 13 years now).

My Instructors in New York spoke very highly of Sifu Fong and his academy, so when I moved to Georgia, I knew I had to continue my training here and it's been worth every minute!
