They have fitness classes daily and open swim times in their basement pool. It's really great the way it is divided into different levels depending on what you are looking for. Most of the weight machines plus free weights and indoor rock climbing are in 2nd floor. The 3rd floor has a track which goes around the entire upstairs and mainly has cardio equipment. The weights include the only four way neck machine I have seen at a commercial gym. They also have a deadlift platform, power racks, pull-up machine, dumbbells to 120 lbs. Plus they have too many extras to mention. It's a great place that does a lot of good for the community with kids activities and a true health focus. I live close enough to walk and feel very fortunate to live so near. Highly recommend!

There are a variety of positives and negatives for Genesis that ultimately come out to a mixed bag of good and bad. The location is right off of Battlefield and National, and is very easy to access. However, the parking lot is far too small for the busy times of the day, and it may be difficult to find a spot during the afternoon prime time workout hours. The interior was completely renovated when Genesis took over the gym, and the locker rooms, cardio class areas, and upstairs treadmill and exercise bike sections were completely redesigned and are very well maintained. Honestly, the locker rooms look more like the bathrooms for a fancy hotel than a gym. The gym caters very well to the serious powerlifter or bodybuilder with a wide variety of machines and free weights, including several squat racks and a dumbbell rack ranging all the way up to the very impressive pair of 160's, although much of the equipment is rather old and was first used well over a decade ago. Because of the age of some of the machines, it's not unusual for some of them to be out of order for several weeks at a time when something breaks. The hours have gotten worse in recent years. The gym used to be open 24/7 and closed only on Christmas Day, which was fantastic for the college student with a late schedule. However, they now operate more closely to the day shift industry standard, and tend to close early on the weekends and close completely on certain holidays. They tend to close very early and open late with restricted hours the day before and after a holiday, so you have to pay close attention to their notifications. The price has also sharply increased. What was once a cheap gym membership is now a big monthly commitment that requires a significant bank account. They prefer that you sign a contact for a two year membership, although this can be automatically renewed without any input from you. When I moved out of state, management wanted me to transfer my contract to someone else, despite me not seeing any paperwork in over six years. The gym sells a variety of supplements and other fitness products, although the high prices are usually beaten by buying them somewhere else. They have a smoothie bar by the front desk, but again they tend to be overpriced. Overall, Genesis is a good gym with a few drawbacks. Expensive, and with a restrictive schedule and membership contracts, but very nice with a beautiful interior, and it's well worth the visit if you live or work nearby.

Now they've decided to cut daycare hours from 2-4 PM, which is arguably one of the busiest times of day for working parents who actually need it. It feels completely out of touch with the people paying for this service. For what Genesis charges, this place is honestly embarrassing. The air conditioning has been a problem for what feels like four years. Equipment breaks constantly and then sits unusable for months before anyone fixes it. Meanwhile, they have no problem charging premium membership prices and collecting annual fees right on schedule. I want to be clear that this isn't directed at the front desk staff or childcare employees. They're always friendly, helpful, and do the best they can. This is a management problem. The people making the decisions seem completely disconnected from what members are actually asking for. The sad part is there's finally some real competition coming. Crunch opens in November with newer equipment, functioning HVAC, childcare for a fraction of the price, and a reputation for actually maintaining their gym. I'm genuinely counting down the days until I can cancel my membership. Genesis has coasted for years because they had no competition. Hopefully that's about to change.

If you're an overanalyzer like me, questions might swirl around in your head, such as: will this work out? Could I see you as part of my life? What if I leave mortified?? The #1 thing I will tell you about Crossfit Springfield East is that you will experience a VERY productive hour of working out, including (based on my 2 visits here so far): - group warm up hitting on form for the strength, skill, or movements to come in the workout of the day (WOD) - a strength movement of some sort/EMOM (every minute on the minute) - met con/WOD I was impressed with how sweaty and rewarding a work out I got here on my last visit in August. Coach Mel gave me some great tips to keep in mind for my future training. Each class I've been to has had about 15 participants. For drop ins, the fee is $10. Lastly, I loved the very friendly community here. I was introduced at the beginning of class and greeted with friendly smiles and welcomes. Further case in point: at the end of our exhausting WOD, a friendly older gentleman told me "nice job, Chicago!" and helped me put away my weights. Great camaraderie. Looking forward to the next time, Springfield East!!

The coaches are phenomenal and so lovely. They all learned my name the first day, and they were great about making me feel welcome every time I was there. As a fairly beginner CrossFitter, the coaches paid close attention to my form and offered helpful tips to improve my lifts. This gym feels like a family, and between the support from the coaches and the other athletes-- I was excited to show up and push myself every day. I think this gym is great for someone from any level of fitness. The 5 week period of time that I attended this gym was fully during the covid pandemic, and the coaches did a good job of promoting social distancing and requiring people to thoroughly clean all of their equipment/areas. They require athletes to register/sign in to the classes in advance to ensure that they don't surpass the 18 person capacity. Drop in's cost $10 -- I highly suggest checking this gym out if you are looking for another CrossFit gym or looking to start your fitness journey!

Weight room is bigger than some, with 3 racks plus Smith, a cable machine, leg presses, etc. Only thing I didnt see was an EZ curl bar, but no big deal. (They also have lots of sign threatening charges for "dropping weights," not re-racking your weights, or "leaning weights against the wall.") So be warned, I suppose. I haven't had much interaction with staff here, but from what I can recall, they've been friendly. It's not the shiniest or prettiest AF I've been to, but it's got it where it counts. They've also got a vending machine with drinks. Would definitely come back.

I tried hitting up some other gyms but when I made it clear I wasn't interested in joining a cult or taking out a second mortgage on my house they quickly lost interest in me. The manager here was super friendly and willing to take the time to speak to me without undue pressure. The free weights and cardio machines were adequate for my use but the place is probably geared more for the casual user than the gym rats who want to grunt, groan and slam weights around like Neanderthals. So if you don't need a river of testosterone flowing around you but rather a pleasant place to work out without being judged by how many tires you can flip over than this is the place for you.
