The park is really big with plenty of outdoor activities. Doling Park is a Springfield gem. I would definitely keep Doling Park Family Center in mind for future activities.

I would give this place 5 star's, but what's holding me back , is they use paper towels for cleaning instead of cloth, and their vending machine doesn't have lot's of healthy options. The area is very open, and even when the parking lot is full the building doesn't seem that way. They have a walking track, basketball court, break area, pool, aerobics, rock wall, and full weight area. The good; I love that this place is so big, and that it doesn't seem packed. Their weight room is extensive, and has plenty of free weights and machines to fit any need. A rock wall who else has that?! And a few nice places to just relax. The bad; The majority of weight machines have seen better day's. Lot's are rusted, and cracked. Some of the weights don't seem to accurate. Also the track is a bit narrow; you really can't walk with more than one other person. And if two people are slow it's hard to pass them on the straight aways. I also noticed today that some people were running full-court basketball. Sure they had enough people, but this might be an issue if you just wanted to shoot some hoops on a Saturday. I also didn't notice any side activities like there are at my regular gym; pool, table tennis, and video games. I also hate that the use gobs of paper towels to clean the machines, what a waste "IMO" All in all its a nice gym, and serves its purpose. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Maybe I just am use to my gym. ;)

I am also a Silver Sneaker member but today I came with my granddaughters who are out of school. The older ladies working the front desk acted like it was such an inconvenience to wait on us. Then proceeded to let us know that none of the amenities for children are available until after 4 so that older members can enjoy it. Even the lifeguards were grumpy! School is out and kids should be able to enjoy the facilities! Isn't that what parks are for? What a shame! I have family that retired from the park board and they are appalled too. But they wouldn't let us leave without setting us up at another park with courts, and they sent us off with some extra paddles and balls since we didn't have enough for everyone to play. That being said this place has some pretty big issues, at least to me. Their sound system sucks. Plain and simple. I went once and the building's PA system that they were speaking over was popping and cracking like a piece of wet firewood. I thought, "Surely they'll get that fixed before the next show, because that was no good." The next time I went to an event almost 6 months later they hadn't replaced the system and the speakers actually went out about 15 minutes into the show. Which pretty much ruined the whole night. Another time I was at a show there and went to the bathroom on the first floor. Every urinal and stall was taken but one. I opened the door and it looked like someone had backed into the stall after eating eating 50 Exlax laced White Castle Sliders and washed down with a couple of gallons of coffee and had their ass explode. It was one of the 3 nastiest things I've ever seen in person. I swear that the toilet had been filled to overflowing with crap and it was on the floor and walls of the stall. I didn't know that a single human being could hold that much feces. Either that or someone was running through the bathroom with a 5 gallon bucket of chilli, tripped,and dumped the contents into the toilet. At any rate, ever since that night the first floor men's bathroom at the Shrine Mosque no longer exists in my mind. It has been edited out of my universe. I realize that this was an isolated incident, but it was horrible. If I could have given 2.5 stars I would have, but it's not bad enough for 2 stars.

This building houses the Abou Ben Adhem Shriners which I am a member of. Where I understand a lot…read moreof people do not understand what the Shriners do, I'm not going to explain a whole lot of it here but would love to explain it to you if you have any questions and will also provide a link at the end of this to help explain more about that. The Shrine Mosque was built in 1923 and in 1982 was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Besides Shriner events it houses tons of other concerts and events. It almost seems that there is something going on every weekend there. I just helped out for the past two weekends as a clown at the Shrine Circus. It is a very unique old building that several of our past Presidents have visited and Elvis Presley even played. At the time it was built it was the largest Shrine west of the Mississippi and it's stage size was only second to the Metropolitan Opera stage in New York City. The main auditorium seating is right under 5,000 people with a basement area that other events are held at that can seat over 1,500. BUT the pool is regularly closed. When it is open, they definitely don't want kids nor families there. Pretty much no way a child over the age of 4 can swim, bc they are too big for the kiddie area (which is rarely open anyway), but also the "rules" about big kids swimming changes at the whim of who is working that day. If you ask a clarifying question, they are rude and unhelpful, not to mention unprofessional. The "lifeguards" are all snotty 20 year olds who make it clear they don't want you there. As for the workout area, NO rules are ever enforced: people hog the machines, don't wipe them down, and block the track. Despite all of this being against the rules. But staff doesn't correct them bc they don't enforce the rules. The locker rooms say "no kids of opposite gender" and "no phones allowed", both for the sake of privacy for people undressing. BUT people ignore these rules. Good Luck to you if you attempt to get staff or management to enforce the rules, bc their staff will gaslight you and treat you like YOU are the problem, if you want a rule enforced OR if you raise a concern about the rude rude rude condescending staff members. This place is only there to serve the staff and their buddies. Do yourself and your family a favor and go elsewhere.
