Very disappointing experience. I waited over an hour for my car, only to be told I would need to upgrade and pay more if I wanted a vehicle instead of waiting even longer. I was running late to a business meeting so I took the upgrade. There was also a lack of clear communication about insurance options. I wasn't informed that adding coverage is charged per day rather than a one-time fee, which was very misleading. It also changes when you upgrade the car. I would strongly recommend being cautious before adding any extra coverage. Overall, I had to call afterward to get charges corrected, which was frustrating and time-consuming. I left feeling very dissatisfied with the entire experience and will not be renting through this company again Also, wanted to add I was not the only one waiting. Once it was our turn to be served, the attendant told us they over sold the cars. He told us to find another rental company. I reserved a car 5 months in advance of my arrival date. When I got to the kiosk to pickup my car they were closed. A sign said to go to Hertz to get the rental. When we finally found the Hertz kiosk I was told unless you paid in advance for the rental you do not get it. So I went to AVIS and the only cars left were electric vehicles at 3 times the cost of the original rental. I do not blame AVIS, they pulled my hind end out of a fire. Workers were amazing but the hidden fees are unreasonable. Airport taxes okay whatever, America is run on taxes. They will tell you "200 dollar fee is taken out, will be returned once returning the car" okay fine. Read all the fine print, I had rented a car, but I did not fill up the gas (as recommended) but was never told how much would come out if not filled up... $180 was taken out for a $25 tank. Dollar car rental took my money on a pre pay and refused to give me a car or a refund because I was not taking a flight. Rental.com said they could have refunded at the counter. Another guy before me experienced the same thing. I still do not have my refund from 3 weeks ago. I was trying to go to an out of town funeral. I want to give zero stars. Reserved a car at Birmingham airport and checked in online as instructed. When I arrived at the Dollar location, there were no agents there and the sign instructed to go to the Hertz counter. I went to the Hertz counter and was told that I could not have a vehicle because I did not prepay for it even though I was never told that I needed to prepay. The agent acknowledged that I had a reservation and checked in as I was supposed but stated they are only taking prepaid reservations. I asked the agent how I was supposed to know this since it was not communicated to me and she did not answer. I had to scramble to find another company who still had cars available on Thanksgiving evening and ended ip paying almost double. Do not rent from Dollar. You deserve better. read more

A friendly reminder to NEVER rent from this company from any location. They charged meover double the amount of my reservation and tried to tell me it was because I did not drop my car off, when I did and had documentation to support that. When that lie didn't work they tried to tell me they did not see that I had paid for the car at all when I had paid before picking it up. I had a long 12 hour day of travel from Massachusetts to Birmingham. I had made reservations about 6 months ago for this trip for an ultramarathon I am running in tomorrow. I got there just before my reservation, and it was clear something was up. All windows had extensive lines. I am a middle school teacher and understand sometimes patience goes a long way. My bags were the last off the plane so I was 8th in line. When I got up there, my name was added to the list and the rental car agent said she would do what she could to help us. She kept trying to walkie and chat on the computer for help, but supervisors were busy and did not respond. She assured us we would be taken care of and I continued to read my book for an hour or so. One by one she took care of every customer. Hilda was by far one of the most courteous rental car agents I've dealt with on my travels. She helped us out big time, and stood in the door to push to get us in cars for the night. Well worth the wait. The car was great, drives perfectly and got me to my destination! Having worked in customer service for many years and working in education, I have learned patience is a virtue. I am thankful that Dollar Car Rental, Birmingham employs people like Hilda! We, along with several others, waited, and waited, and waited. Rented in GA airport never had problems before but this time I rented from dollar. When I got there I discovered they messed up on my renovation which cost me more money. But the worst part was when it came time to return the car. They made the drop off 2hours away from where I live. If you live in NJ but not close to Newark Airport DO NOT RENT FROM THEM!!!!!!! We flew into Birmingham Airport this Wednesday afternoon. The Dollar Rental desk had a sign that said it was closed and to go to the Hertz counter. Many people were waiting in line. One worker was present at the counter. When it was our turn we could see the agent named Michael was clearly overworked and the place understaffed. His attitude was positive, professional, and incredibly helpful even though he was obviously tired and doing the job of three agents. Upon contacting them prior to my trip they were not helpful and have not been helpful since. Michael, the only agent working not only for Dollar but 2 maybe 3 other rental car companies was an amazing young man. He made the entire experience the highlight of a long day of travel. His attitude of being positive despite being impossibly understaffed is a credit to him. I asked if he was paid more for working for so many different rentals (all with the same parent company) and he smiled and said "No sir, but I'm working." No bitterness just truth with a smile. I left something at the counter and tried to call. Called the corporate number and they said they didn't have the number to the local airport office. Never again at this airport. I waited almost 20 minutes in line before someone came to the window. It took me almost 30-45 minutes to get the car. After driving several hours, I lost control of steering. I was on a major highway. Luckily, I was safely able to pull over. After calling Dollar with my serious concern they said "don't worry." Please don't tell me to ever not worry when I could have seriously been hurt or hurt someone else. They wanted me to drive the car to the nearest Dollar location for an exchange. If you think it is so safe to drive, you can come get it. They did nothing to help with the situation. Very dissatisfied with this location. I flew in to Birmingham, and payed in advance for a car because of previous experiences of not having a car ready because not paying up front. When I arrived I went to get my car and they said that we were unable to get a car because there were "none available". We were told by other workers that there was a big event and management advised to not give out any cars to anyone under any circumstance. I have rented many cars in the past, mostly through Avis and Budget. However, this was my first time renting a car through Dollar at BHM. When I booked my reservation for Dollar I also booked one with Thrifty. My rate for Thrifty was about $14.00 cheaper than Dollar. When I arrived, I noticed Thrifty and Dollar was under the same umbrella. Well of course I wanted to deal with Thrifty becuase it was a cost savings. However, the young lady behind the counter explained she did not see a reservation in the system for Thrifty I advised I had a confirmation number and attempted to show her, however, she was not moved nor did she ask to see it. I proceeded with my check out. Prior to returning I called to inquire if I can bring the car back an hour late. I was advised it would be $8.55 for an hour, I was never advised of any additional airport fees that would apply. Upon returning there was a situation which caused several cars to back up to let a car out. This now caused my hour to pass by a few minutes. I spoke with the young man checking the car back in and he politely called the service desk to explain the situation why I am 5 minutes late. Apparently the individual he was speaking with appeared to have no idea of what I was referring to and that I was told I can bring the car back an hour late. I walked in to the service desk and approached the same lady who originally checked me out. I explained the situation and she indicated she can take 1 hour off. I then went back to how I didn't understand what happened to my reservation that I booked with Thrifty. Carmen the representative stated there was nothing there it appeared to have been cancelled. I inquired who would have cancelled it because I wouldn't have being it was less than Dollar. Carmen just stated she does not know and pretty much was saying my transaction was over. I do business with a lot of places and I am big on customer service. I was not moved with Carmen's service. I politely left. Once I arrived back in Tampa, I called and left a message for a manager to call me back. I did not receive a call. I called again and reached a manager. I explained the situation to him and my concerns. He did appear to have a listening ear and he did locate my other reservation with Thrifty. At least I know I was not loosing my mind. However, he was not able to explain why it was cancelled. I still don't know how that happened but he did work out a deal with compensation. I explained any person would love to save money, my man concern was the way the situation was handled by the representative. Dave (the manager) apologized for my experience. Although I was bothered and thought about going some place else in the future, Dave may have kept my business. No amount of compensation is going to out beat bad customer service BUT because Dave took the time to research what the issue was and what I may have been confused about says a lot. It is all about how you treat each customer, not just a number. Thank you Dave for your assistance in listening and researching the matter instead of just pushing it away. This is my first time renting a car at BHM. The rental car location is in the parking garage (which I always appreciate for convenience). The clerk was moderately helpful, not particularly engaged in the transaction, but oh well. The biggest disappointment was the 2010 Toyota Corolla with 47,000 miles - this was my rental for my four day trip. It smelled like a wet cat had driven the car for last three or so years. The air conditioner wasn't efficient and there wasn't a USB port or Bluetooth for my iPhone (did they not have these in 2010?) I suppose this is the quality of rental at "Dollar." They "automatically" (according to the clerk) charge you for a full tank of gas and then "we take it off if you return the car on full." While they did take off the charge when I returned the car, I haven't ever had this happen before and was hesitant to sign the rental agreement. I usually go with Enterprise for my company discount and will probably stick with them in the future when I am in BHM. read more

Their computers were not working when I returned my car so they emailed the final invoice. They jacked me for an extra $92 in completely bogus surcharges such as "license fee". I reserved through Expedia and they were not able to help. I tried calling Dollar's corporate office and was not able to get anyone on the phone. I emailed Dollar and when I heard back over two weeks later they told me nobody at the location in Birmingham was responding. The company that owns the Dollar franchise is called Great Lakes Rentals. They also own the Thrifty franchise. Do not rent from them. They are highly unethical and you will get no help from their corporate parent. read more

DO NOT rent a car from these people!!!!! On Saturday of Memorial Day weekend I arrived at the Birmingham airport at 9:30 am after a 2 hour flight. I did not receive my rental car until 11:22 am because of a there was a long line of people waiting to get a car from the Dollar/Thrifty counter in the garage. There was no cell service to try and get hold of anyone to see about renting a car from someone else. The one young man,Darius, in the booth was doing his best, but clearly he was not trained to do that job. It was rumored that no one at all showed up at the desk until 8:00 am, and thats why the line was so bad. To make matters worse, another female employee seemed to find the whole situation hilarious, even counting the number of people in line while she laughed. Outrageous!!!!!!! Then today when there customer service line was finally open, I was passed from agent to agent, with long holds in between, all claiming that they would transfer me to the correct department. BS!!!!!!!! . UPDATE!! Upon returning the car, they were nice as they could be, and gave me a great discount. Still, I would be very wary of renting from them if you absolutely need to be somewhere on time. read more
