I had a reservation for a specific car that I made 2 month in advance through Costco. When I landed in Charleston and when to checkout the vehicle, the clerk said, the car wasn't in stock. I returned the rental car on time on November 24, 2025. After reviewing my credit card statement, I found the I was charged $281.41. I was over charged $46.34. Seemed to be short staffed. Took several minutes to locate the car and there was no one around the area to ask a question regarding navigation system. Car was clean and met my needs. Returned early and once again no employee around to verify if I needed to do more. Left the key with an employee in a booth and was told "good to go". I strongly dislike leaving bad Yelp reviews, but I'm still confused, shocked and almost in disbelief about my experience at this counter yesterday. Perhaps if I'd read their Yelp reviews prior, I'd be far less disappointed in the sub-par customer service given at this place. I witnessed a few disgruntled customers storm off after being denied a rental because of the DL strip-reading issue other yelpers have mentioned, but I was still hopeful my experience would be better than theirs. WRONG! I don't even think I got to finish telling the girl about my reservation... as soon as she heard me say "I am late", she shoo'd me out of there so fast! I tried asking her why she couldn't help me and she couldn't give me a straight answer, so.. I got back in line! There were two others in front of me at that point but I quickly realized 1) the staff has one speed (slow af) and 2) they make no attempt to get customers into vehicles, so I left. I'm usually pretty patient and am very polite, even when receiving less than stellar service because I understand we're all battling something, but I'd go as far as saying I've received far better service from California DMV employees!! read more

We arrived on 7/24/21 at 1:30 pm and there was 5 other parties in front of me. There was two representatives working (one larger black female and one younger white male) working at the desk. It has now been 1.5 hrs and I get to the counter and the black female says "you might as well get back in line because I'm out and we waiting on cars." She than leaves the other employee by himself as there is 7 customers waiting. He said that the service center weren't washing the cars and were sitting around so they are backlogged. Horrible experience. Poor management and poor teamwork. Obviously corporate does not care as they have taken NO action to improve their customer service based upon past reviews. read more

If I could give a zero I would. Make sure you check your contract thoroughly. I reserved a vehicle online without any add ons. Once I got to the counter to check in, the agent tried to talk me into all these add ons and I refused. When he told me that the price was over $200 more than what I originally rented it for, I started questioning why. He printed the contract off, highlighted the one way drop off fee and covered the rest of the contract with his other hand. After arguing back and forth with the agent, I decided I needed to just leave before I got in trouble. After driving an hour and a half back home, I pulled up my original contract online and noticed that the one way drop off fee was already quoted. The agent added on insurance and roadside service. I did not need either one of these services, since my insurance covers rental damage and I have AAA for roadside assistance. I tried to call customer service and never was able to speak to a human being. I also, emailed customer service about the issue and they just responded 7 days later. Don't rent from this location. I travel a lot and rent vehicles almost every trip I go on and this will be my last time renting through Dollar. I'd rather pay $500 more on a rental from another company. read more

Unfortunately we experienced much the same as others before us. When we arrived there were several people outside waiting for their already checked out vehicles. They seriously waited over an hour. We walked in and had to wait for 30 minutes before we spoke to the employee at the counter. I will say she was very nice, and helpful regarding our reservation. Once we finally got through the counter, we then waited for an hour for someone to bring the car up. This place seems extremely unorganized, there should have been a lot more people at the counter, at times. I kept seeing more people bringing cars up, but why the long delay is beyond me. The counter people kept having to go out back to check on cars or something, you would think there would be like a computer or something to check!!! On a good note, our shuttle driver was amazing, very friendly and we felt comfortable driving with him. This was such a terrible experience. I lost my license before my trip and had an official temporary driver's license to use. Their website stated that they accepted this form of identification. The clerk was so rude about it and wouldn't accept my temporary ID. There was no room for conversation even when I showed her that dollar's policies stated that they'd accept the temporary ID. This put me in a terrible position at 6:30am! She gave me a "customer service" number but the mailbox was full. So I messaged them and I still didn't get a response back. This was the worst rental experience for me. It took nearly 1 hour to check in. I was forced to sign a piece of paper that said the car didn't have any damage BEFORE I was able to actually see the vehicle. I requested a toddlers car seat and it was not ready when I checked in. There was nobody attending the booth in the garage, so finding the vehicle was difficult. Upon return, again, nobody was there to check the vehicle in. I had to record the miles, condition, and fuel level, then return the keys in the terminal. Good thing I came to the airport early because this process took way too long to return a vehicle. I booked this rental through AAA, and was never reimbursed for the child seat. Normally I would contest this, however I'm am just so glad this experience is over, its worth $100 to not deal with the Dollar Car Rental at CHS. read more

It took forever for the shuttle to pick us up at the airport and the driver did not act like he enjoyed his job. We finally got to the rental place and it took almost an hour to complete our transaction..... there was only one person ahead of us. it seems like they bought stock in Kia Souls because that is predominately the only cars to choose from. The car was trashed, it smelled like stale cigarettes and some kind a cleaning spray. The interior was a mess, there was trash left from previous renters. along with a hair brush & tools. The car wasn't even checked after the last drop off because we were told we had to have a full tank of gas when we returned it but it only had less than a quarter of a tank in it when we got it. My suggestion if your flying into Charleston airport do not rent a car from dollar rental. read more

Looking at the other stars makes me wish I would have researched on yelp before booking this through Priceline. Long story short: Booked the "managers special" and showed up at midnight to be given a truck. I explained that at my age and with a knee surgery there was NO way I could hoist myself up into a truck. The woman at the counter (I won't call her out) replied to me "TOO BAD!" and went on to tell me that the managers special is a truck. I explained that one assumes they will get a CAR at a CAR RENTAL place. I did not see anywhere in the fine print that I would be given a truck that I could not access due to mobility issues. Then she said she would UPSELL me to a car for $100 (on top of the $454 I was already spending). Having no other choice/options I took it. This "car" was a souped up muscle car (Daytone Charger) with an engine built on top of the hood- making it most difficult to even see the road. I literally took it and drove it ONE MILE to the hotel and returned it at 8 am the next morning to cancel the entire rental. Only to then be told that I was going to be charged $113 - which included the upsell fee of $20. I have filed a complaint with Dollar Corporate offices, as well as with my credit card company. I rented a vehicle from Dollar at Charleston International Airport. At 9 am, you would think there would be more than 1 associate at the rental desk to support the customers in line. The associate told me that she could not reduce my reservation (current car rental rates are very high), but my final charge would reflect the actual rental duration once the vehicle was checked in. When I returned the vehicle that evening there was no associate in the garage or at the rental desk, forcing me to use the key drop box at approximately 8:15pm (the same day). The car wasn't checked in until after 2:00 pm the next day (more than 18 hrs later). Dollar than proceeded to charge me for a 2nd day, when I returned the car in under 12 hours. Poor customer service experience. Overbilling. Look for alternative car rental options from this location. read more

I rented a car from here and really had no issues. I booked it through southwest and when I landed I was surprised to have to take a shuttle as most of the others were right there. I would rather book with the ones in the airport however this one worked just fine. It was inconvenient but it did the job. read more

Horrible place to rent a car at Charleston International Airport. Make sure you realize that this location is NOT at the airport, unlike with the other major car rental agencies. You have to walk across the street and wait, and wait for the bus to take you miles away to the actual office. They appear to have only one bus, so get ready for a long wait. Both Dollar and Thrifty share same bus and office. Once you have arrive, get ready for another long wait for someone to help you. Horrible service. So once you have your car and you plan to return it, get ready for another round of waiting in line, both for check-in and waiting for that same slow bus to take you back to the terminal. You do save a few bucks by renting from them, I guess, but in the long run, what is your time worth? Never again. read more

One word for this place- SLOW. The only reason we used this place was because it was an add on for Southwest Airlines and I thought it would be easier. I had reservations for the evening. The line was crazy, we waited a long time and then the check out process took forever. They were extremely short staffed. We waited over 20 minutes after checking out to get the car. The entire process took about an hour, which is absurd. On the bright side, if I could rate the shuttle driver, I'd give him 5 stars. He was amazing- a magician at packing bags in, jolly, helpful, efficient... everything you desire in an employee. Unfortunately the rest of the experience paled in comparison to our shuttle driver. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS LOCATION!! Still unresolved issue from renting here. I was 2nd in line on 3/28/21 and it took me 45 min to get my rental completed. After picking up my rental and getting on the road to my destination I tried contacting them to confirm drop off location when I realized no specific site was listed on my agreement. I tried calling the number on agreement as well as one on agreement envelope with no answer and full mailbox so no way to leave a message - 19 TIMES OVER 2 DAYS! I tried calling 800 numbers listed on line and they can't help you because apparently this is a different type of location. Over a week past dropping the car off in Nashville, TN where they could not officially check car in but took all of my information, and they were not able to contact the Charleston airport location I've received a call today stating my car has not been returned, with a number to return the call. Guess what - again no answer and the mailbox is full. I have been unsuccessful in trying to contact this location now for a total of 27 attempts. The Nashville location is unable to reach this location. read more

We had a great experience with this agency in Charleston. The service was timely and the vehicle was fantastic. Just as important was the agent who checked us in. She was incredible. She was very pleasant and customer service friendly. She even made sure we got all the discounts we were entitled to which saved us almost $80. I wouldn't hesitate to rent from Dollar again just because of the service and professionalism of the agent. Thanks for everything. read more

Unbelievably slow service. We landed in Charleston (for our anniversary trip, by the way) and waited a full 15 minutes for the shuttle to show up. We also called twice but we're left on hold before I could ask how long the expected wait was. When we made it to the offsite rental location, it took an additional 30 minutes just to fulfill our previously made reservation. Wait. More waiting. Then the same guy that was at the register drove a WET car around for us. So on top of all of this we are expected to drive a car with water spots around Charleston all weekend. This place was a disappointment. They would not agree to let us get a rent a car with a debit card unless we paid a 10% of the rental total non refundable deposit. We chose dollar car rental because as Dave Ramsey podcast listeners we thought we could get the $200 deposit back. This Dollar does what ever want because it is privately owned. Don't use it. It's dirty and creepy and a bit away from the air port. Also, their shuttles have old branding logos and are easy to miss from the air port pick up loop. All that being said- their shuttle drivers were nice and accommodating to our 1 year old. read more

Use another car rental. First of all, this location is off the airport and you need to take a shuttle there. Shuttle drivers are very nice. Once there, long lines. I had rented a full-size car, none available and ended up with a small car. No adjustment of price. Bad attitudes at the counter. When i returned home, called Dollar to get a price adjustment for small car. I was told that I had to call back the LOCAL FRANCHISE for Dollar since corporate could not change their billing. Buyer Beware Here!! This is not a corporate location this location is a franchise. They are not obliged to follow corporate guidelines. I found this out recently during the current Caronavirus issue. First, it took three tries to get checked in. First they had the reservation incorrect having me renting the car for 2 months instead of 1 week. They adjusted the reservation for the correct dates but tried to charge me a higher rate for a smaller vehicle. The third try finally got it right when I insisted they honor the confirmed reservation I had. Then the option fiasco. This location added every option. Not sure what a 68 year old needs a car seat for. When I asked for all options to be removed only half were removed. I again said NO OPTIONS and of course one option was included. Unfortunately I missed this one and upon discovering the error the next day I was told nothing could be done. I'd like to write this off to incompetence but my belief is this padding the bill scheme was no accident. read more

Awful. First, this rental shop isn't at the airport and that is not clear whatsoever. So, you wait for a shuttle. That's not too bad, it takes like 10 minutes. But then you wait in the gross and dirty shop while the single employee rings two other customers in. 30 min later hear that although you rented a compact car, they only have mini-vans or trucks left. You realize you don't know how to drive something that big and wind up having to pay double for an upgrade for the only car they have left. A mustang. I'd rather have the compact. Also, don't forget the fellow renter who said last time he rented from here the cars tail lights were out so he got a ticket. This place is honestly just bullshit. DO NOT USE! 1) They are not at the airport, even though they show up that way on Kayak; it's about a 10 minute shuttle ride. 2) When I called for the shuttle (and I had to figure it out when I didn't see a desk at the airport), they didn't tell me it said THRIFTY on it (who they share a site with). I had to figure that out as well. 3) Once I was finished registering, it took 10 minutes for my car to come up (they claim they were cleaning it). 4) They didn't email me the receipt as promised. When I called Dollar to get it, they said I had to call the location as it is privately owned. 5) They tried to charge me for gasoline, even though I filled up right down the street. Small kiosk that shares Dollar and Thrift. Evidently employees can rent for either company at either computer console. Employee would not rent a car without full emergency contact info. Car was reserved under a government contract and they still refused to rent without additional personal info. Come to find out, they didn't even have a car of the reserved size available. I was the 3rd person in a row that walked up to the counter and walked away without a car, while another customer was waiting for over an hour while an employee went to "fuel" their car. This location is also a Thrifty Car Rental. It is not located at the airport and you will need to catch their free shuttle. The shuttle service is maddeningly slow and if you consider how close you are to the airport - it shouldn't be. The front desk customer service is almost as painful. But I think you will find the shuttle service to be the deal breaker. I would recommend using one of rental locations at the Charleston International Airport - you will save time and have a smoother transition from plane to car. read more

Worst rental car experience ever!! This place is terrible, so terrible. We waited at the airport for 45 minutes and the shuttle never came. We called as soon as we arrived and every ten minutes subsequently. Whitney told us it was en route, but that was clearly untrue. After a long plane ride with small kids the last thing I wanted to do was wait for a shuttle take that then wait almost 45 minutes for my car. They of course up sold me telling me the car I reserved wasn't available and this size was more comfortable. The car was filthy. Dirty and disgusting. The oil change sticker showed they were overdue for an oil change... Why have that in the car?!?!? Staff was friendly..at pick up VERY SLOW. Drop off staff was. Much more efficient. My experience here differed from a lot of folks but I could see where problems could exist. The process of obtaining my rental was a wee bit slow, but faster than others. The people were nice enough and the car was clean and well maintained. My experience may have differed because I booked on Expedia and thus the company required less effort to book my car.
