After landing at Charleston Airport, we called the car rental, and it took them 35 minutes to send their shuttle. I don't care if we are 2 or 6, if you are saying the shuttle is available in 15 minutes, do send it within that time window. We reached the rental counter, it is 3-4 miles away from the airport, and it is just like your neighborhood rental agency. Not a fancy agency, with no crowd, we got our car, inspected it, did some signatures, completed the formalities and we're good to go. The car was good, we completed our trip and returned the car in very good condition. (we don't smoke, drink, or throw trash in the car), not even candy wrapper. They inspected it and it was all good. Luckily this time we found the shuttle on the spot, so reached the airport in 5 minutes. We did pick up and drop off our car at noon, but it's not 24x7 so be mindful of that. No. Just no. I don't know where to begin. We thought this place was on site at the airport but it wasn't. Shuttle picks you up and drops you off and it's not. However, you still get hit with a lot of fees including an airport tax! Waited 40+ mins in line because there were only 2 people checking in and one of the people didn't have his insurance information including policy number and expiration date (yes, they ask... seriously?) Car wasn't washed or vacuumed and had stains on the seats despite it being a newer car with only 20k miles. The woman helping us washed it quickly but the vacuum was not available. 20+ mins more and we were finally able to go. Car had dings and dents all over the place and some bad ones too - I made sure to take pictures in case there were issues later. Upon return, delay again because no one was at the counter. Finally someone came out. Said shuttle was down so they were bringing people in a minivan back and forth and limited to 4 people. Lenny, our driver back to the airport started by saying "Hi, I accept tips"... yep. Got it. He didn't even handle our carry-on, we did. Got to the airport after him telling us a lot of wild stories, and we left to go inside and he said "What, no tip? See.. I knew it!" Great southern charm, Lenny. I've rented cars for years and this has to be the WORST car rental I've ever had. My husband rented a car from the Charleston Airport location (which isn't at the airport, by the way--you gotta Uber to their location or risk waiting 45-minutes to an hour for a shuttle), and the car we received had so many issues with it. The girl who inspected & approved the Toyota Corolla we got gave us the all clear, even though the dashboard and temperature controls were all fogged up (likely because whoever cleaned the vehicle used supplies they weren't supposed to use) to where you couldn't see anything--not even what speed you were going. However, we could see that the "maintenance required" light at the very top (which you could barely see) was turned on. How are you going to give your customers a vehicle that requires maintenance?!?!?! Never rent from this place. This is the WORST car rental place I have ever rented a car in my entire life (and I rent cars all of the time for work). The worker was so lazy that when I asked for the exact amount of my bill, she said, "I don't know." Prices were better than the rental cars directly attached and available at the airport next to baggage claim but taking the shuttle to a further out off-site location and waiting in a random building near the woods in a poorly lit area was pretty off putting after traveling a long flight and getting into Charleston at night. Wow. Where to start. First you hop off of your plane and there is no signage about where to go for the shuttle pickup for this company. Asking other companies about ACE and they were " We hear this all the time. Oooh, you just kind of wait over there..." Shuttle arrives and he was a nice helpful gentleman. Then he takes you to a sketchy old home surround by a junkyard and stray cats. The front desk was unbelievable. We had a nice Spanish lady helping us, while three other people at the front desk did nothing. This woman said it was her third day and was obviously struggling. Not a single ounce of help from her co-workers. One hour and fifteen minutes to get our Hyundai. We walked back to a DIRT lot that was just mud from the recent rain. Hopped into our car and off we went. Giant grease smudge right at eye level on the windshield. Hit the sprayers? Nah, washer fluid is gone and the wipers are just smearing some unidentified substance from the window. Fifteen minutes down the road, check engine light comes on. Who cares, right? Its a rental. Light goes off and it starts to rain. Hit the wipers again? Just smearing water. Oooof. It gets dark, turn on the lights. "Bulb out" warning light comes on. Holy crap. Looking at the instrument cluster that look's like it has been cleaned with a Hershey bar. Nope, just the plastic that you can barely see through. Oh well. We are stuck and drive the whole week in a car that keeps lighting up the instrument cluster like Christmas. We drive into the dirt patch upon returning the car and tell the most helpful Hispanic lady all of the things wrong. She looks through the window at the larger women that don't look like they have moved in the week we were here last. She says, "I will make a note of it." It is safe to say that this is one of the worst experiences I have had renting a car from ANY company. We could have paid three more dollars per day for a competing company and 1. Been at the airport. 2. Had a similar or better car. 3. Been treated with prompt service. 4. Had a fully functioning, clean car. Save yourself the headache. When I went to pick up the car, I was told that I needed to pay $40 a day for their insurance coverage because they did not accept Priceline insurance. So, they refused to let me take the car. I called customer service and they refused to issue a refund because they claim that I did not show up. First, it was completely unclear as to where to find them. Newsflash, they are not at the airport, nothing is labeled. When we got the car, the "lot out back" was basically a cloud of weed smoke and there were toddlers walking around! The exterior was pretty scratched up and banged up. The interior stunk like men's cologne but when that wore off and it heated up from the sun, it became clear that the cologne was a cover up attempt. The customer service is horrible! First when we arrived it took 45 minutes for the shuttle to pass, the location is roughly 10 minutes away so why the shuttle took so long makes no sense. I waited about two hours, was treated in the rudest, most unprofessional manner I have ever been in my entire life, only to be given a small compact car that was retrieved from a park and fly a lot rather than the SUV I reserved and was charged for . I asked about all the SUVS behind the building and was told some nonsense and when I questioned it she said she could refuse to rent to me all together. When I questioned her about the price difference of compact vs SUV, she said she gave me a 10% discount. I told her I'm still being charged more money than I should she once again stated she didn't have to rent to me. I would not recommend my worst enemy to rent a car from this car rental service. The manager Anitra lacks customer service skills, the ability to communicate, and professionalism. If I were able to rate this place lower than 1 I would! Hopefully, you see this review before renting and take heed. You may wonder why such harsh words and why I'd take time out of my life to write a review. Here's why, I scheduled a rental car for 7 pm, unbeknownst to me this Ace Rental Car Service which markets itself as an Airport location is actually not located at the airport and closes at 7 pm. I waited for about an hour. Called several numbers to be told by customer service agents at another location to take a taxi to the office. Upon arriving at the rental office I was met by an unlit renovated home on a side street with roaming cats. After knocking on the door a shuttle worker by the name of Michelle appeared and shared with me that she was not able to assist me because the office closed at 7 pm( the exact time of my reservation) and she had no clue how to process a reservation. At this point, it is 8:30 and I share with her the issues I had with getting an Ace employee on the phone after arriving at the CHS airport. I was met with an apology and she was not able to do anything about the fact that I'm standing on a dark, unlit street with no transportation. I then Asked for a manager or supervisor to be called and was told a few times she had no way of contacting them. After demanding someone be called, Michelle miraculously found a number for Anitra, pictured below. Still, no assistance or solutions were provided, and I was told to return in the morning. At this point, I have no choice but to call a ride to be taken. To my hotel and return in the morning. I arrive shortly after the office opened to be taken back to a dingy lot behind the home/office building, to cars that had stains, smelled of smoke, and burnt/ripped seats. When I refused to accept the vehicles shown to me and requested a better model and to speak to the manager because a $20/per day upgrade charge would be added to my bill, Anitra proceeded to scold me and raise her voice. When I asked her to lower her tone when addressing me, Anitra decided that she had had enough and told me I had 5 seconds to leave the premises or else she would call the police. Appalled and taken aback I asked why and was told because I was being mean to her employees. I never yelled at, them or was aggressive toward any of her employees, I only want the service I believe I would have received at any other car rental service. Well, instead of providing this service and acknowledging the faults of her company, Anitra proceeded to call the police so I turn called them too. Long story short, DO NOT RENT FROM HERE! Let me start off by saying the ladies that work the front desk were not the most courteous, and it makes me understand why people lose faith in humanity. Other than that, I had booked a midsize car through Priceline and got a compact car. If you are booking through them and you are a South Carolina local, you have to provide full coverage insurance. Also, if you were thinking about leaving South Carolina, North Carolina or Georgia do not book a car through them. These are the only states you can drive in. On 4/2, I picked up an unsafe vehicle (White Kia Forte) from this location. Of course at the time, I did not know it was unsafe. The counter gal was super nice and very helpful during the whole transaction. I went on my way and took the vehicle to start off my vacation. On 4/3, I drove the vehicle and while on the road, was notified about low tire pressure on the left front tire. No biggie right? I simply went to the gas station and filled it with air. No other issues came up that day and I ended my day parking the vehicle at my hotel. On 4/4, the next morning, I got into the vehicle and to my surprise the tire was extremely low once again at 15 PSI. At this point, I figured it might have a nail embedded so I reached out to the rental company and spoke with someone about it. She shared that it wouldn't be covered since I didn't buy additional insurance on the vehicle. No biggie, I figured I'd just take it into a tire shop and eat the cost of the nail patch. Once I arrive at the shop, they were super helpful and told me it would take about 10 minutes... about 5 minutes later, the associate rolls the left tire up to me and says "ma'am, you don't have a nail in the tire, this one and the right one are on wire. I legally cannot place these tires back on the vehicle" obviously, I was shocked at how bad the tires were but they were just as equally shocked that this was rented out to me under these conditions. I then called the rental company and spoke with someone about the tires being on wire and she said "let me place on you hold", I was on hold (the tire shop, my boyfriend, and myself kept calling from other numbers and no answer) for over an HOUR and 45 minutes before I gave up and paid for the tires myself. Fast forward to THREE hours after I had purchased the tires, I get a call from the rental company and once again, the gal who I spoke to was very sweet and shared that I could speak with a manager about getting a refund when I returned the vehicle and to make sure I brought the receipt in. I said okay, and not only would I bring the receipt, the tire shop was nice enough to throw the bad tires in the trunk as proof. Fast forward to 4/7, I went to return the vehicle and what do you know? No manager was available to speak with me. They shared she would return on Monday 4/8. They asked that I leave the receipt (I took a picture of course) and that I'd be getting a call from the manager to resolve this matter. I didn't make a fuss of it all being that I had a plane to catch. I simply said thank you and went on my way. Fast forward to today, 4/17, still haven't been able to speak with the manager about the refund. I've spoken to various associates (whom have all been very kind) and at least on three different occasions, they've shared that they already processed the refund or "we tried but your card was locked" but it seems the manager, Carmela, is avoiding me. I spoke to my bank and they do not see a refund coming through. In conclusion, I filed a claim with the Better Business Bureau to get my money back. Be very careful renting from them. And if you do, because I do understand their prices are exceptional, INSPECT EVERYTHING. read more

We found the same at the business. the car they gave us had a light come on right after we left the business. we called and then brought it back the next day and were given another car. I mean... brace yourselves. You're not at Hertz or Alamo. You knew what you were getting yourself into when you hit buy for an Ace Rental reservation. There's a reason why it's cheap. That being said, I was very pleasantly surprised. If you can get past the non essential things like friendly service and smiles... at the end of the day, they do provide a car that works and that's what you're there for. Friendly staff but...I'm almost jealous of an owner/proprietor who has no compunction about running a business like trash. That degree of shamelessness merits an extra star. UPDATE: Had a leaky tire --had to return to exchange vehicle but at least they gave me an upgrade. Carplay interface didn't work in that vehicle, and it had sand on the seats...but again, the staff including the shuttle drivers are so friendly it almost makes up for losing 90 min returning the bum car. First, when you exit the airport there is absolutely no signage indicating that the ACE headquarters is over 10 minutes away from the airport. Thank God there was a shuttle the with Ace logo on it and it took me asking the driver to even figure out where to go. The shuttle driver was the best part of the experience. Next, it's hard to explain, but when you first see the Ace building you ask yourself, "What the hell is this?" The process to even get the vehicle took north of 30 minutes. The gentleman I dealt with was very nice and pleasant. However the two females at the front desk were miserable. We finally go to inspect the vehicle. I take my own exterior pictures and when I open the doors to take interior pictures, I smell a strong odor of puke. Low and behold there was a giant puke stain on the passenger seat. How was this not addressed??? How was this car "cleaned" and ready to be rented??Foul. You can absolutely tell this place rents the cars back out as soon as they hit the lot. I go inside and tell the gentleman I was working with that there was a puke stain in the car and that I'd like a different vehicle. He was very understanding however the next vehicle he attempted to set me up with was a Mitsubishi I don't even know what, with missing hubcaps. I was kinda shocked they even tried to rent this vehicle out. When the employee attempted to start the vehicle, it wouldn't start right away. After it was all said and I done, I no longer wanted to do business with this place to which they were actually accommodating and voided the entire transaction. Don't let the cheap rates fool you. I would NOT recommend this company to rent from! They gave me a cat that had no AC.... Remind you it was 100 degrees out the week I rented the car.....About 15 minutes after driving car away the check tire pressure came on and I had to put air in my tires 5 times if not more... the car was very dirty.... When I call the same night to complain they asked me to bring the car back. I don't have time to sit there and drive the car back to them. My sister was about to have surgery that next morning and they were closed after I left.... They should have came to replace the car. After all said and done customer service wanted to give me 15% back which was only $41 and they gave me $36 so that's not even a full 15% back.... You come here and you wait and wait and wait....
