A little conflicted because once I got the car, it ran great and had no issues. It was the customer service experience that was terrible. I had booked the rental a couple months in advance, and when I got there after landing from my flight, the service wrapped basically told me a jeep compass was the only option available, even though I had booked a car with a little more amenities. I eventually got a Kia Niro at the very end when he happened to mention that there was one available but what really made me mad was he was trying to force me for a good 10 or 15 minutes to get the collision insurance which I declined when I made the booking. He made comments like you need this. You're gonna want this. You have to get it. It's mandatory. I asked him if it was mandatory then why was I able to decline it at the booking and after saying no for 10 minutes and letting him know that my credit card provides rental insurance even that he didn't believe me I had to show him he finally let off. Makes me nervous for all the people that were con into getting the insurance that people next to me definitely were going to the same thing and unfortunately, I heard them just opted to pay it because they were told it's mandatory. read more

Tried calling numerous times direct to the location but no option gave me a chance to speak to a real person ie., it was all AI. Calling head office, you can speak to a person but they were not knowledgeable of the location itself. Arrived early morning and there were 5 customers in line with only 2 people working at the counter. The woman who served me tried to upsell car size and then sneak in minimum insurance despite me telling her I have full coverage under my own insurance. She made me call my insurance company and when I asked if she wanted to speak to them or them to email a declaration of some sort, she brushed it off ie., finally accepted she couldn't charge me the extra fees. I don't usually write reviews, but this is the second time I've had issues with airport rental locations, so I feel it needs to be said. From the moment we arrived, the experience was frustrating. The customer service rep was on her phone playing games while taking our information. At one point, it honestly felt like we were interrupting her. She then told us that purchasing their insurance was mandatory, which was never stated anywhere when I booked the car online. Things only got worse from there. When it was time to bring out the 12-passenger van we reserved, she informed us it was under recall and that it would be hours before another one might be available. Her solution was to offer us two cars, but by then we had already been forced to pay for the insurance, and getting two vehicles would have doubled our cost. We ended up waiting a very long time for the van. We were thirsty and uncomfortable, and the only bright spot was a kind worker who offered us water. Considering the inconvenience--especially at a newer location--I would have expected at least some sort of discount or acknowledgment, but nothing was offered. Because of the delay, we missed our Dodger game and then got stuck in traffic on top of everything else. The Dollar Car Rental has moved and now operates out of the consolidated LAX Rental Car Center. It's spacious and clean inside, however, poor service. There were insanely long waiting lines and apparently they're short staffed. They have 26 working stations, 13 on each side inside the hall wall, but only 5 were staffed on one side of the station and the other side was completely empty, while there were more than 50 guests waiting in line. read more

BEWARE - Fuel / gas scam. I took a picture of the dashboard electronic display where it shows how many miles are left until the tank is empty and it said 405. I filled up the gas tank right before I dropped the car off at the airport. I took a picture of how many miles it said were left until the tank is empty and it said 417. So I returned it with more gas than when I received it. They still charged me $100 for gas! Also, when I booked the rental at Booking.com, I said I wanted a compact car and I agreed to the rate. When I got to the rental counter to pick up the car, they said I rented the "manager's special," which just happened to be a huge truck which got only 10 mpg. How convenient. I don't like driving big trucks. The representative then proceeded to upsell me to a compact car for an extra $122!! I didn't rent the manager's special. I tried to show him my receipt but he kept insisting I was wrong. I will never rent from Dollar again. Totally shady and crooked thieves. read more

I traveled to California for the funeral of my goddaughter and chose Dollar Rent A Car because I had rented from them years ago when I lived in California. I believe I was even a member at one point. They also had the best price for this trip. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing. I waited over an hour just to reach the reservation counter, only to be told that the vehicle I had reserved was not available. I was offered several large trucks and SUVs, which I didn't want because gas in California was over $7 a gallon, or smaller vehicles that did not meet my needs and were not comparable to the vehicle I had reserved. I was then told I would have to wait until a vehicle in my reserved class became available, but they had no idea when that would be. The employee asked for my credit card information so that if a vehicle did become available, he could call me from the lobby and I wouldn't have to get back in line. My reservation was for 12:00 p.m. By the time I finally left at 2:00 p.m., I had already missed a luncheon and an important meeting. I left frustrated, with a severe headache, and extremely disappointed with how my reservation was handled. What disappointed me most was that no compensation, apology beyond the inconvenience, or alternative solution was offered for the two-hour delay and failure to provide the reserved vehicle. A reservation should mean the vehicle you've reserved will be available, or that the company will make every reasonable effort to make things right. Based on this experience, I will most likely not rent from Dollar again. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. I now join the growing cadre of customers who swear they will never again rent from Dollar. The agent (Boston Logan airport) hassled us to pay for insurance we did not need, made up charges we'd have to pay if we did not have THEIR insurance: like $200 a day charge for every day of the rental AFTER an accident, 300 per day for a flat tire. Told me that letting them fill my tank at the end is cheaper than if I do it (not). Then tried to get me to pay extra for a daily tolls fee that would have cost me extra. In short, film- flammed me in every way trying to squeeze more money out of the customer. I wonder if they are paid a commission for any upcharges? I wonder if they are trained that the best way to get upcharges approved is to hassle, intimidate, and belittle the customer? I was so pissed as I finally finished with him that I just wanted to hit something! There are other agencies that will not make you feel so used. Look elsewhere. read more

Honestly, I had zero issues. I arrived around 7:30 in the evening and waited about 30 minutes. I think I got lucky with the line but you also have to realize when you're paying such a discount there aren't going to be a ton of staff there to move the process along. The 5 stars goes to Temika who went out of her way to accommodate me to get my rental car after booking it from a 3rd party (Priceline) and finding out that without a credit card you can't rent a car. I didn't have $300 on a credit card. So she offered for me to use a debit card but a $500 holding would apply. Since I had plenty of money in my checking account I said "sure let's do it". Unfortunately, when they pulled my Equifax credit (which has never been done before in my experience) due to some prior issues on my credit I was denied. I could not get my money back since I pre booked and I could not get the car. That would of been $600 thrown out the window. OK, I don't know if the place is like under construction or what but it was kind of a weird walk if you are coming in as someone that's not taking a shuttle from LAX to rent a car but we get to the counter and Rachel greeted us warmly and kindly. She was very gracious helping us out. I gave my confirmation number and there we go... And unlike the other Rent-A-Car company that I reviewed, our security deposit was $200. That's a normal security deposit for any kind of rental car. The most I think I've ever paid was $300... Got a great car great price gas saving vehicle... it's pretty weird though because I haven't been driving a gas car in like four years. I've been in an electric vehicle. So I am in a Nissan center until my car gets totaled out and I had another one. I don't even know what they're gonna do. I have no idea how this works. All I know is my cars beat up pretty bad and it was a new car and there's a lot of stuff that is wrong with it. Excellent customer service! Anna was very helpful and knowledgeable when we picked up the car, and she helped us change our reservation from an electric car to a hybrid which worked out much better for us. She also didn't try to upsell us on prepaying tolls since we didn't need that service. The only problem we had (and this is a company policy issue) was finding the return location since our map app took us to the wrong place (maybe it recently moved?) so it would be nice to provide info on the drop off location when picking up the car. read more

I rented through tmobile and all was well until I got to pick up the vehicle. The gentleman helping me was so rude and impatient telling me I booked through third party so therefore he couldn't review or edit any details for my booking. That would have been fine except i paid for the insurance and he refused to help me look into it as dollar was claiming I hadnt paid for insurance. He instead insisted I upgrade the vehicle and just kept pushing upgrades and insurances policies on me. I didn't understand this since according to him he couldn't change any details of my third party booking. When I pointed this out to him he became visibly annoyed with me and told me do you want my help or not?! I was so confused as he was making it seem like the only way he would help me was if I agreed to upgrade the vehicle and add a second insurance plan? I finally asked for someone else to help me and had my rental in less than 5 minutes. I called T-Mobile to assist with my issue and they were so amazing helping me find my policy number for the insurance I HAD purchased and helping receive my gas credit. I used the policy number to then contact dollar customer service to get the insurance information with the policy added to the rental in case of any accident or issue. The customer service representative said it would take at least 48 hours to look into the policy and decide if this was valid or not to dollar! I explained to her I would be returning the vehicle in 2 days( so did that mean I and the vehicle would not be covered anyway) she said yes then said even if the insurance comes back as valid they could decide to void it if I was in an accident or another issue with the vehicle because I signed the waiver of liability at the customer service stand. I explained to her I was told I would not be able to take the vehicle of the premises without signing the waiver and the whole issue could be fixed once the insurance policy issue was figured out. Reserved car months ago. Confirmed vehicle reservation yesterday with ID and insurance etc. They do not have ANY cars and this is clearly standard practice. There are people who have been waiting HOURS ahead of us. Should have used another company. This is a short trip and this will basically cost us a day. There are no chairs in the waiting area for people waiting for hours. There is no method for being able to leave the waiting area. It's like 1986. Agent was rude, misrepresented insurance options and charged us over $190 more than our quote for a "deposit." You can bet that will be refunded.i travel A LOT and generally use a different company. Waited 90 minutes to arrange pick up of booked car through booking.com. Was informed that the booked vehicle type was no longer available so an upgraded vehicle would be available at no extra charge. Vehicle was not in the allocated parking bay. So another 20 minutes wasted waiting for a replacement vehicle. On checking bank account 3 days later, Dollar/ Hertz had debited another $350 US for vehicle upgrade. Have contacted Hertz and after initial response indicating they would look into the matter there has been no recent response. So...check charges carefully and insist on showing a copy of booking voucher to counter personnel. Overall...book elsewhere. read more

The worst experience renting a car ever. The agent whose name was Mina was extremely rude. Their credit card reader was not functioning and kept declining the card. We kept asking them to use another unit since we knew there was nothing wrong with the credit card. Even contacted AMX and had AMX explain to the rude and nasty agent called Mina. I recently rented a car from Dollar Rent A Car at LAX, and honestly, it was a terrible experience. The staff member I dealt with, Renee, who I believe was the manager, was super unhelpful and had zero empathy. She gave me a really hard time, and even made me cry, but she didn't care at all. She even mocked me and had a very dismissive attitude. She told me, "It's not our problem if Booking.com doesn't refund you. It's your problem." She also said that I had to cancel my reservation with Booking.com and rebook the car directly through Dollar. But since it was less than 48 hours before the pickup, Booking.com said they couldn't cancel it and that I would lose the entire amount. I had booked through Booking.com, and they confirmed there was no cancellation on their end. I've rented from Dollar before and had a good experience--the staff was kind and helpful.
