If I had to do a 3-word review of Tops, it might be: "What Sara said." Having been a CHS alumni and…read moreall too familiar with "The Grand Union experience" of the past, as well as some other Tops markets, I was expecting the worst here. I did find a few redeeming qualities in the store. In fact, I'd prefer to shop here than some of the bigger chains with whom I have to deal, such as Stop & Shop. I came here at what could have been one of the worst shopping times - the morning before Thanksgiving, 2 hours before a blizzard was to arrive. There was no chaos, the shelves were well stocked. The produce was in good shape though the floor should have been swept. The employees are small-town friendly, because this is a small town and you get to know everybody. A lot of the prices are indeed way too high. This included some (but not all) produce, poultry, dairy, and soda. Over $2 for a 2-liter bottle of Tops own brand of soda? Fortunately, there are convenience stores in Corinth now, such as Stewart's and Cumberland Farms, where you can - and should - get a lot of these types of items cheaper. But I did find a few surprisingly good deals and loss-leaders among the overpriced stuff. Clearly you can pick and choose among these items to not spend a fortune. But if you're looking for a full cart's worth of groceries, you can probably drive to other grocery stores in the area and still come out ahead in the money you'd save on the groceries versus the cost of the gas.

This is my favorite place to eat in Saratoga, thus far. And I realize that may be a weird thing to…read moresay since it's a little grocery store/specialty market, but it's just outstanding. It's a huge, high-ceilinged, open and airy market with salads, sandwiches, and prepared meals if you're ready to eat right then and there. They also have all kinds of fun jams and condiments and produce and proteins available if you're into cooking at home. If I lived in Saratoga, I'd live at Franklin Square. There is a LONG list of sandwiches to choose from (and you can make your own), but after a detailed and intense discussion with my man behind the counter, I decided to roll with the classic turkey club. WHAT. A. SANDWICH. Piled high on a triple decker with quality turkey, quality bacon, sharp cheddar, all the lettuce and tomato you want, and slathered with plenty of mayo...this thing was made with care and skill, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. When you get a simple sandwich like this and it is this outstanding, you just know everything else they make is going to be excellent. We got a few prepared salads from the deli (the Mexican elote corn salad is a winner) to supplement, and I don't think you can go wrong with anything. Plus, the dude at the deli counter and the lady who checked us out were so nice and helpful in the face of my inane questions. I appreciate that.

We popped into Franklin Square market on the way to happy hour at Chianti. Without great…read moreexpectations, we figured we would check out the little market that used to be a "mini" Market 32. When we entered the building, it was the quaintest, little urban shop--a counter with prepared foods on the left and a trendy restaurant entrance on the right. The market in the middle was full of curated items intended to capture customers. From fancy jarred items to unique serving tools, there was a curiosity around every corner. When we looked over the divider to the bar area, we were captivated. They advertised a happy hour that included six dollar drafts and sangrias. So, we figured we would give it a try. My husband ordered a Peroni, and I ordered one of the three specialty sangrias--the garden sangria. Since the happy hour appetizer offerings didn't interest us much, we opted to order Kalamata Polenta Frites off the regular menu. When the sangria arrived, it was garnished beautifully. The muddled fruit was an intriguing addition to the semi-sweet wine concoction--truly garden variety. While my husband's Peroni was pretty straightforward, the polenta frites knocked our socks off. They were piping hot. They were incredibly crispy. They were creamy and flavorful in the center and accompanied by a complementary dipping sauce. An item we have never experienced before in our pretty diverse travels. Needless to say, we never made it to Chianti.

The last time I had to ask for her help it was because a sale item wasn't in the store the two times I looked that week, so I asked for a rain check, which is in line with their store policy. This is after two other people at the customer service desk couldn't find the rain check slips and the second didn't know what to write. Finally when Leslie showed up from the overhead page, she literally huffs at me and then makes another clerk go back there to verify there is none of the rib eye there and the exact label information, despite me having it right here on my phone in the Hannaford app. 15 minutes since asking for a raincheck for the out of stock item later, she tosses it on the counter and walks away. This wasn't just a bad day for Leslie, I had the misfortune of interacting with her a few months prior and her behavior was similar. Leslie is the rudest customer service manager that I have ever come across. I hope that corporate sees this, and takes my more detailed complaint that I sent via email to heart; this store requires new management training and incorporates other changes to benefit the customer.

The layout is a little odd here though, not what I'm used to in other grocery stores I guess. Ample parking though and kept fairly clean. We just stopped in for snacks & some travel-sizes items before setting out on a road trip to Florida, but there was a decent selection of snacks & a limited selection of variety in the travel sized section. Their new loyalty program is a nice perk though and makes them more competitive with Price Chopper now.
