As we we got within a few miles of the park, we checked the car's GPS machine for restaurants. There aren't many in the area. We passed and rejected a few. Then we stopped at at Pipestem Trading Post. We chose a table. A waitress brought menus. Two of us ordered the Philly Steak sandwich. I forget what the others had. The food turned out to be a wonderful surprise for all of us! I believe my Philly Steak sandwich was $6.99. The prices are from a decade ago. If you're looking for breakfast or lunch in the Pipestem State Park, WV area, this is the place.

Kroger in Hinton is a lifeline for the community. It's the only "big name" chain supermarket…read morearound, possibly in the county (we are a one stoplight town). So in addition to being an important resource it is also a major employer. It's definitely aging in terms of the building but it is well kept up otherwise. I personally have not seen anything horrible (which I have in other places/other supermarkets). The staff is very kind and helpful. This Kroger carries a surprisingly good assortment of "hippie" products, the sort of thing you find at Whole Foods (which don't exist in West Virginia). It has a good assortment of organic and vegetarian items, as well as local niche offerings including milk in glass bottles, and (fairly) local sausage and beef. They also often carry some 'chi-chi' items, especially in the arena of pickles and condiments and sauces; I got the Truff hot sauce there a while back, and today I picked up some pretty fabulous looking pickles. All in all, as Coastal "Elites" we find most of our needs met pretty well by this small town Kroger. Would I like to see it upgraded? Of course! But I think they are doing a good job serving the town.

Parking is plentiful. And there's no hurry in shopping. If you can't find something, they'll point you to three kinds of whatever you're asking for. You will always buy twice what you expected and eat some multiple of the candies you promised yourself you'd "save" on the way home. So save room in your trunk, people.

You can find every conceivable canned or frozen item. Unfortunately, many of the offerings are definitely NOT those one would find in an upscale grocery store. High-fructose corn syrup, 60% and above calories from fat and preservative-filled food seem to be the rule. The fresh vegetable section is seriously lacking, par for the course for the state with the highest chronic obesity rate in the US. If you're looking for last-minute convenience items on the way to Snowshoe, by all means come here. If you're looking for a week's shopping list, go down an hour on Highway 92 to White Sulphur Springs and shop at the Food Lion.
