First time visit…read more Very big parking lot Friendly customer service Clean Quiet Lottery sold here

I used to work the door at a dive bar in Philly that attracted a lot of college students, so…read morecarding people was my main function. I learned a few things along the way. The better looking you were, the more likely I was to card you. The better you dressed would also get you a good look, whereas if you were ugly, and dressed like a hobo, you might get a pass. Still, I appreciate the difficulty in determining age within a few years, especially when people are young. There are dire consequences should you get it wrong, and the employee is rarely on the hook for it. On the other hand, there must be some common sense involved when you make a policy decision to just card everyone that comes through your door. This isn't a Wildwood Road House, it's a grocery store and most of the people in it, are older than dirt. Kids don't go to the grocery store. If the person in question is trying to buy Fireball while carrying a box of Captain Crunch, you should probably card them. If you look like me, you might want to give them a break. This is apparently company policy, which is simply lazy, an unforgivable display of hospitality, and not within the spirit of the law. It's illegal to sell liquor to minors so Acme has decided to use a sledge hammer on a thumbtack. Clearly, management has zero faith in their employees to make good decisions, and from the number of cashiers on the floor, apparently no interest in providing anything remotely approaching customer service. I find it tacky and insulting. It wasn't always this way. It's been four decades since I was underage, and now that I'm pushing sixty, I can't find the logic in carding me simply because Acme doesn't trust it's employees to have a lick of sense and doesn't give a rat's a** if their customers are inconvenienced. There's no competition in the immediate vicinity so they must feel secure that they can treat their customers poorly with little repercussion. Where else are we going to go? Why not have a more nuanced approach? Do they look like they could be younger than 30? Maybe you ask for ID. Carding everyone is an insult to everyone involved, including the poor employees who have to deal with it. It makes you want to order everything you can from Amazon, buy your liquor from a local store, and get your produce from a farm stand. No bags. No sense. No service. No sale.
