Subtract this one from a short group of places in OC that I had driven by for years but had never stopped at until two weeks ago around lunch on a Thursday. Upon entering everybody is warmly greeted by someone who works there and while there are certainly shoobies who show up at least when we were there it was far more locals than anything else. The store part has a little bit of everything in terms of dry goods, dairy items, multiple drink coolers, frozen food items and bags of ice outside but the star of the show is the deli half of the store. All I can say is that it's good and by good I mean like really good. The guy working the grill knows how to make a cheesesteak and the rolls they buy are righteous. Past that aforementioned cheesesteak options (there are multiple) you also have a full line of hot/cold hoagies, all D&W products, several salads by the pound and even a few breakfast sandwich options along with coffee/ donuts from when they open at seven. A few noteworthy quirks to help your experience: * When they're open (in season only) it's from 7am-8pm. * The grill does not start until 11 and it stops around 30 minutes before they close. * They do not accept debit/credit although there is an ATM on site. * Their large hoagie is a 19 inch monster. (It's well worth the investment) * Speaking of investment, prices are definitely on the high side but I suppose that comes with the turf of being open seasonally along with being on the island in general. * Check out the picture frame on the wall with all of the prayer cards as it's very impressive as is the sign on the deli warning you of their ten dollar surcharge. Overall Berenatos is really a neat place with a bunch of character and everything we got from the grill was fantastic and next time we're in town especially if we stay as close as we did last time, we'll definitely be back for more. read more

Extremely slow. I waited 15 minutes for 2 Panini's with only 1 person before me. This was a take out order. Overpriced at 9.99 each. selection for lunch sandwiches are mainly all hot and definitely would have preferred a cold sandwich on a hot day. The food was poor. Started eating the sandwiches within 10 minutes and they were completely mushy and falling apart. The chicken salad panini was only chopped up pieces of chicken, not what was described to us at all. We chose that one because we were told it was cold. Worst chicken salad sandwich ever. Would never go back again. Atmosphere is nice for coffee house appeal except for dead plants around the shop. Pretty depressing for a bright sunny day. read more

I've been coming to Ocean City for years and just found this awesome deli! They have a little bit of everything and their food is so good. This place went downhill in the last few years. Went to place an order in person after trying to call multiple times and couldn't get through. Placed the order for a cheesesteak and salad, waited 20 minutes. Went to check on what was taking so long and they said they forgot to make it. No apology. Just left without saying anything. Was in here recently picking up a couple of items. A stressed out dad entered with his little boy who badly needed a bathroom. The owner wouldn't allow the little boy to use the bathroom, even after the dad offered to buy a coffee and sandwich there. Not sure who told them that they had the best hoagies at the shore or if that is just their slogan, but I did not feel that it was the best hoagie at all! I went in there on a Friday afternoon and there was only 1 other customer in the store but it took 15+ minutes for 2 hoagies even though there was at least 5-7 people working and yelling/talking to each other. The staff was not warm or friendly at all; no greeting, thank you or good bye from anyone. Asked for tomatoes and got 2 tomatoes on a large hoagie and 1 of them was a tiny end piece. We stopped at this deli on the way home from our vacation. I got the pork roll egg and cheese sesame bagel. I live in Central NJ and therefore pretty biased to those bagels I normally get there... But it was still good. The people are very friendly, it is family owned and the brother and sister were working there and very kind. This deli also is a small general store too for your basic needs and has fresh donuts everyday which is great. Oh and they also have a big barrel of those great dill pickles which made me excited. I have heard the hype all week from my family about how good this place is. We stopped in for dinner around 7pm and ordered two cheese steaks. The owner or some lady with out shoes was hanging out and ended up making nasty comments that we had ordered hot food because the grill was cleaned. I was staying on 2nd Street for a few weeks so after walking past this businesses dozens of times on my way to Express Pizza, I decided to give their sandwiches a try. The number one reason I would never go back is the extremely mean couple that own this business. The cheesesteak was ok and the Italian hoagie was fine but not compared to Express' cheesesteaks. However, there are limited options in the north end of town so when I compare the friendly environment of Express Pizza compared to the miserable and angry environment of this business, generated mostly by the owners demeanor, I will walk a few more blocks for far better food in a welcoming and friendly environment and pay less for that food. Stuffed sandwiches done right. They know how to slice meat and veggies, and properly construct a packed breakfast or hoagie sandwich. Berenato's is the real 'Jersey Mike's' of the Jersey Shore. It's a family-owned bodega, offering chips, deli pickles, and standard fare you'd find in a typical Philly/NYC corner store, except cleaner. Went there for breakfast because OC is crowded and I could see why it was empty. The environment was not put together although there were nice people working there. My bagel was ok but their was no effort put into it. I asked for cream cheese and got a block of it on my bagel they didn't even attempt to spread it I had to wipe half of it off. Could not dislike this establishment any more strongly. We own a home in the area and I've never once stopped by and been made to feel anything but an intruder. The man who owns the place and several employees are outwardly rude, even commenting negatively on my daughter's food order when she was 11 years old. Embarrassed her in front of several people. I've heard them commenting among themselves about not liking the tourists and looking forward to the end of summer. They refused to make my daughter a breakfast sandwich at 11:02 am because "we stop serving breakfast at 11:00... you missed it by a few minutes". Really? If I could give them zero stars I would.
