Excellent fish & chips - I'm glad I don't live in this town as I'd likely be a frequent customer and my weight would double in very short order.
The cod was chunky fresh, sweet and delicious. The just perfect chips from a dry fluffy potato like Maris Piper (waxy spuds would be awful). Five star all the way.
I'd noted this place long ago, years in fact, as it kept winning annual British fish and chip awards as top in Northern Ireland and I see why. My food was delicious and even after price rises it was still good value.
So I rant on about unhealthy junk food but if you analyse it, fish and chips are mostly fat and crap free and can't be filled with saturated fat, cheap sugars or artificial chemicals.
The only unhealthy things are the batter, usually flour, water, salt (in the batter and on the food) baking soda and salt and the frying medium which if you really want the tastiest fish and chips is beef dripping.
There's no substitute for battered fish and chips, fried in beef fat and well salted, as it gives such a fabulous taste. If you like vinegar the taste is lifted to a whole other level.
The more posh places fry in
'healthier' ground nut oils and charge more, but their numbers have retreated here. I work on that old adage 'a little of what you fancy does you good' I just struggle to define 'a little'. read more
