After getting off a long day at work, all we wanted to do was to get some quick information and go home. When they did give us the rates at the end of the tour, we were blown away. My husband and I both work at Intel. We are both blue badges with graduate degrees. There's no way we could ever afford this place. It does have all the bells and whistles, but kids just need somebody loving and attentive; they don't NEED a gourmet chef cooking for them. Just feed them lean meats, whole grains, and lots of fruits and veggies: it's not rocket science. Look, if the rates weren't so outrageous, it might not be so bad. I'm sure this place would have lots of good activities, but it's also good for kids to have plenty of unstructured playtime. This is how kids develop creativity. I would rather save my hard earned paycheck for paying off student loans, a downpayment on a home, or for retirement savings. Such drastically overpriced childcare has no place in the budget of 99.9% of financially responsible parents.

Then, just six weeks before his third birthday, we were informed that he did not have a spot in the three-year-old classroom and that his spot in the two-year-old classroom had been given to a child on the waitlist. Yes, you read that correctly: Our son was forced out of this preschool without justification, and we were given six weeks to find new childcare accommodations at a time when most providers have six-month waitlists! After asking around, it became clear that this situation is by no means common for childcare providers. I won't get into the other red flags we identified because frankly, they pale in comparison to this infraction. I have had some time to process everything, and it has left me split between two conclusions: either Sunshine Montessori is managed so poorly that they failed to continue to care for our son or, for reasons I can't comprehend, the leadership at Sunshine Montessori made a malicious decision not to continue to care for our son. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusion. My only advice is to proceed with caution if you're considering leaving your child in the care of Sunshine Montessori Preschool. You too may be left scrambling to find a new provider on short notice.

Within one month, Rachel (along with her assistant teachers whom she'll only hire if they are also passionate about supporting children with this spectrum of presentations and needs) had worked her magic and our son has been thriving there since. I've had brief moments to connect with other parents and they've all said the same things - not working out elsewhere, came to Alderwood and within a short period of time, their kiddo was well adjusted and doing great! The children are taught from a young age to love and respect all people and their environment, and they are instilled with a personal responsibility to bring forth kindness into the world, just as the Orthodox church teaches. While I am thrilled with the excellent academic and cultured education my children are receiving, I could not be more overjoyed as I watch them develop into good humans. Details and logistics: Elementary classes are mixed grades (usually 2 grades per class), but capped around 16 students per class. The older students take on a more leadership role one year, and then have the opportunity to learn from role models the next. The student body is very ethnically diverse, and we have the opportunity to learn from many other cultures. The school provides after-school care which is helpful for working parents who cannot pick up right at 3pm.
