This is a gorgeous property and the wine was so tasty I ended up purchasing and shipping some bottles home. We were given a tour of the vineyards and then we enjoyed a private lunch in the villa. We felt so important, like royalty almost! If memory serves me right, we enjoyed a light plate with fresh salami and cheese. The main course was a meat lasagna that was so delectable. I could not stop eating. Add the wine and we were all happy! I would love to return here someday as the views from the vineyards were amazing, the staff were very kind and our whole experience was definitely five star!

The main point of interest is the wine that they age in terracotta containers, vs. wooden barrels. The wine tasting (and olive oil and balsamic vinegar tasting) were very good, and we ended up ordering several bottles of wine shipped home (and skipped dinner out that night). In short, a stop definitely worth it.

We came here in a full-day private wine tour- so keep in mind our experiences might differ slightly from others. However, we had a lovely tour of the facilities and explanation of the process, practice of biodynamic agriculture, and evolution of the land. After which, we sat down to taste a wide variety of wines, including of course the Chianti Classico, Reservas, and some special blends as well. The most delicious and impressive was their Batár wine, which is a surprising white (Chardonnay & Pinot Blanc) which was smooth and luxurious... difficult to describe but an absolutely delicious and rare flavor! Very unusual for this region, and they're known for it! A must try!!

Word of warning, don't put Monterinaldi into Google Maps and hope to get there. There is a village at the top of the adjacent hill by that name. The first winery we went to that day was Fattoria di Montemaggio. I'm so glad we hired the driver to go there. It was up on a hill off a gravel and dirt road in the far reaches of Radda in Chianti. Had we tried to drive there on our own, I think we may have given up, thinking we had gone the wrong way. However, on the way there, we saw beautiful view after beautiful view. Then we arrived and the views were even more stunning. Once we began the tour, we were joined by another couple (happenstance, also Americans) and our tour guide, an intern from the University of Florence who was very knowledgeable about winemaking in Chianti. We walked around the beautiful vista points, and through the vineyards. We saw hills, grapes, olives, and roses. This tour and wine tasting was beyond informative. I honestly learned so much about the region. It was really interesting. Our tour guide was very personable and the whole experience was enjoyable. We tried several wines and a grappa in the middle of an olive grove sitting in a lovely picnic area. In true Italian style, we were given a plate with salami, pecorino cheeses, bread and olive oil to taste along with the wine. We truly had an amazing morning of wine (yes, it is always 5 o'clock in Chianti) and I would truly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Chianti. Yes, it is a bit treacherous, so a driver is a good move.

I'm grateful that I live a…read morelife where I was able to take a tour of this picturesque winery tucked into a Tuscan hillside, followed by an absurdly delicious four hour lunch complete with ALL THE WINE. Look, I've been wine tasting before. I'm cultured. I usually go to the bathroom in the bathroom. But I was completely unprepared for this lunch. Partially because my friends who booked it didn't tell us we were tasting wine at a Michelin starred restaurant (and partially because I was deeply hungover from all the wine I "tasted" the night before). In any case, I was not at my best when I arrived. But the hospitality here is unmatched. They welcomed us in like we were guests in their home, offering espresso and anything else we needed before the informative and interesting tour of the monastery where they make and store the wine, including the 1000 year old rooms where they used to smoke meat, and store food. The entire estate is absolutely gorgeous. We were here in May, and everything was blooming. They have an incredible garden in the back which I assume provides much of the produce for our meals, and you can taste the quality and the freshness in their "garden's fresh salad" which was one of the five courses on our menu (that in reality looked and tasted like no salad I've ever seen). This menu underpromised, and the staff overdelivered. While there were five courses, there were also several bites, and tastes, and dips, and even mini-sandwiches of anchovy and butter and dehydrated chicken essence that blew my mind. By the time we finished the incredible cannelloni with roasted beef sauce, and started on the duck l'orange, we were bursting at the seams. I cursed my mother for instilling in me a need to finish everything that was put in front of me, but I was never not going to eat that airy focaccia paired with the silkiest olive dip you've ever seen. One of my friends joked (I think), "If they bring us any more food I'm burning this place to the ground." And of course, every bit of this food was paired with a fabulous wine from their estate. That monastery is filled with bottles of delicious chianti classico, tignanello, barolo, and more. It was amazing. It was excessive. I loved it all. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth it.
