My brakes went out yesterday, and I left the car in a parking lot overnight. I called AAA and went to Joey's Pancake house this morning (see my review for them). Chris showed up right about the time AAA said and had even called ahead to let me know he was ten minutes away. He put my car up on the rig, and we took off. As we chatted, I said something that made him think my brakes had simply overheated. We pulled off and I tested the brakes; they were fine. Since he'd only towed me four miles, it was only $3. My truck would not start so I called Domestic to see what they would charge to fix it. Obviously not knowing what was wrong, they told me there would be a diagnostic fee of around $99 to see what the issue was. When I tried to confim with them that it would not exceed 99$ they responded that it may be as much as $120 if it took longer. When I asked again that it would not exceed $120 they confirmed, that would be the maximum diagnostic fee. So I had my truck towed to Domestic. They had the truck for 8 days and I decided to call to see what the deal was. They said they had not looked at it yet and they had a month backlog. I responded that it would have been nice to have been informed of beforehand, but can you try and fit me in sooner. I admit they did get someone to look at it and the people were very nice. But no one ever even called me back, so after another 4 or 5 days I called to see what was going on. They told me that they had diagnosed the issue and it was a defective computer module. The cost to replace (including the diagnostic fee) would be $1080. I said that seemed expensive since I can get a computer module online for $299. They said they would try to find a cheaper solution. I never heard back from them, so I called and asked if I supply the new computer what would my bill be. They told me it would be $369 - $169 for the diagnostic fee and $200 to install the new computer. Knowing that replacing the computer is a VERY simple job, coupled with the fact that they just charged me $50 more for the diagnostic fee than they had promised, I told them to stop all work and I will get the truck towed back home. So I paid the $169 (+3% credit card fee and taxes) -almost $200! When I went to install the new computer I opened the hood and found that they had taken apart a bunch of components and left them just lying there. Nuts were missing to hold the air filter cowling and 2 grounding straps were left dangling. So after I fixed what thet had left for me, I installed the computer in 5 minutes (less actually). They wanted $200 to install it, at that rate. they are charging $2400 an hour. Domestic Auto is a nice place with nice people and if you dont mind paying $2400 an hour to get your vehicle serviced. then this is the place for you. read more

Yeah. I carefully read the Yelp reviews before having my truck delivered to Domestic Auto. At the time, I didn't have much choice given the nature of my problem and the backlog of work at many local repair shops. Turns out Allen is not only a damned fine mechanic, he runs a taut ship. I found the crew at Domestic to be squared away...competent, capable and motivated. Allen's diagnosis and fix was nothing short of superb. He's busy but doesn't hesitate to take the time to determine exactly what's wrong and commence to fixing it pronto. What's not to like? Well, turns out that Yelp reviews aren't always right or in this case, they're also not fair. Miserable folks seem to enjoy spreading their misery. Domestic Auto is worthy of your trust. I sure appreciate the work they did for me. I'll certainly be going back next time I need my truck fixed. read more

I have a 2012 Ford Focus that I bought in 2020 from a local dealership. It has been nothing but trouble. There is a major recall on that model for the transmission control module. I had already had it replaced once at the dealership and it went out again so I had it towed to Domestic Auto. Alan replaced the clutch inside the transmission and the control module but it still wasn't quite right. He called the dealership for me and got them to order me another control module. The car kept messing up but Alan would not give up. After replacing the control module again the Hill Assist Light would come on and the car would go into neutral and roll backwards at random times. He investigated until he figured out that a spacer under a sensor had not been put back in its place probably at the dealership. He went to the dealership for them to order me the part I needed and got the car back on the road. He made sure he drove it to make sure it was 100% safe before I put myself or my family back in that car. He has earned a customer for life. I appreciate his honesty, his hard work and most of all his tenacity because without him our car would have probably been worthless and sitting somewhere unable to drive. Having used Domestic Auto many times over the years, Allen's Domestic Auto in Clyde, NC is dependent for quality primarily on Allen's help. Allen is a very good mechanic, but he spends most of his time towing. Therefore most mechanical work is unsupervised and done by self-trained mechanics. Hit or miss. It is convenient for us, but overall the record for repairs done correctly is a "C" at best. Why do we still use him? Better shops are a long drive so we use his shop in a pinch. As of August, 2021, I don't know the status of this shop or who is doing what. read more

Minus 5 Stars!! Domestic Auto was called to tow my 2007 BMW 328i, which had been stolen, and the Clyde police arrested the meth dealers who had my vehicle. They towed it on March 13, 2019, but did not notify me. They FINALLY notified the NC Transportation Dept on April 26, 2019, and they didn't notify me until May 6, 2019! They had my registration, and could have notified me. They also had my Handicap placket, and numerous tools. I immediately called Alan Trantham at Domestic Towing, and he advised me I would have to pay him $2,345 for towing and storage!!! I told him since he failed to notify me within the 10 days required by the NC law, I would not pay that amount. He got mad and said. 'Fine. I will sell it.' I spent two months contacting lawyers, NC Officials, Law Enforcement Officers, the AG, etc., to no avail. My insurance company, AllState refused to pay. I attended the Magistrates Court in Waynesville, NC, on July 11, 2019, and the Magistrate was horrible, and although the representative from Domestic said I could pay $1,250, the Magistrate RULED that I had to pay $4,105 to get my car back. I called State Farm Insurance as part of their Roadside Assistance and they called Domestic Auto to tow me to my mechanic. After waiting for over an hour for Domestic Auto to show I called and found out they were in a contract dispute with State Farm. They didn't show, they didn't call me, they just left me and my family out in the cold - literally 19 degrees outside. Regardless of the state of their contract, they were notified of a motorist needing assistance - a fact I confirmed with their offices that day - and no one called State Farm back to tell them they weren't going to be making the pick up. The least they coulf have done was to call me and offer assistance outside of the State Farm situation. read more

Went in for a price on some exhaust work & was quoted "a couple hours ($150.00) plus what little bit of pipe they used. Ok, fair enough so I booked the job the following Friday morning. I dropped the vehicle off at 8:30 AM & wasn't able to pick it back up until 2:45 that afternoon. When I got there, the price they hit me with was $315.00!!!! Had it been 50 or $60 more, I never would have said a word... I realize that things happen but to charge me over double what was quoted? Not cool and not good business practice. If I treated my customers like this, I would be out of business real quick! This place has gotten its LAST dollar from me! Do they do good work? Yes. But was it worth paying double? Absolutely not! My girlfriend has been taking hey suv to DOMESTIC auto dropped it off for oil change and service got a call saying the brakes front and back was shot and both rear routers the job was priced at $660 .the month before I replaced front brakes . I called bullshit on that stopped by thin was told the front was new .that's what I know .so I was told the parts for the rear would be delivered at 2:30 pm . I said I would have to bring it back tomorrow morning .he said that was fine . So what I trying to understand how in the hell at 12:00 my lunch time I stop to get the car the job is dun .that doesn't sound right at all .and never called and said it was finished . So the alternator go's out my girlfriend had them to tow it to their shop 4 miles away the total cost to change the alternator was $1200 the alternator was $300 the job was to take 2houres that's a hell of alot of money if those guys makes that much a hour im in the wrong perfusion. So hell no that's not going to happen I went and bought the alternator 45min later it was on the car and running. It was told the alternator was located on the bottom and had to come out that way . But it was on the top and came out the top . Ez job people please recheck things win u get that price because there's a chance u have been done the same way . I'm not knocking there ability to do a good job. But I do fill like they change was to much and try to do work to cars that doesn't need it .I got a second opinion on the alternator a mechanic told me for that price he would drive 8 hours to my house and do the job . U never no who your dilling with for. Now on ill always check on things before jumping the gun and say just do it .it may save you in the long run. Thanks read more

After making an appointment for 8am and driving over to Domestic Auto and arriving at 8am I was told the guy didn't have time to do the alignment we made the appointment for. The "guy" came in and told me that he didn't have time, even though I had an appointment and that he would call me when he could get to it. I asked him about what time and he said probably about 11am. That was 3 days ago. They evidently don't need any new customers and show no consideration for their customers time. We have taken several of our cars there over the years and have always found this shop to be competent and efficient. The prices are fair, the work is done properly and I have never gotten the impression that they were trying to sell me services the car did not need. I have decades of experience with doing my own car repairs and would pick up on this pretty quickly if they tried. If I could give a zero star rating, I would. I understand you claimed you were short on help, but if you had no intention of attempting to repair my vehicle, or ever calling me with updates, you could have let me know from the start. I was stranded there, 4 hours away from my home, wondering why my van struggled to get up that mountain, and my vehicle sat, without ever being moved, from Sunday afternoon until I had it towed elsewhere on Thursday. For what I spent on rental car and accommodations I could have had it towed the 259 miles home. Instead, I trusted you to help me figure out the problem and get back on the road. While I was checking out and getting my keys, my daughter observed a local person drive up and a tech come look at their vehicle immediately. She was seething because she knew that my vehicle sat, without ever being looked at or issued a "number" for over 4 days. I'm so glad I had it moved to another location and am finally home. I guess I can say I'll give you one star for being kind enough to "kill the ticket" and not charge me for the 1/2 hour of "diagnostics" you supposedly did at some point between Monday and Thursday. read more

Poor customer service. If they hook you, it will cost you HUGE money. The real plan is to own your truck, through excessive pricing and filing for your TITLE. Over $4500 for a very short tow (approximately 3 - 5 miles). It appeared that the objective was to own my truck excessive pricing. There is NO regulation on what a tow company can charge to tow Your Truck. You have to depend on honesty and fair pricing. But I did not find that at this business. You pay or lose your truck. This business was not fair. Nor did they charge reasonable fees. They were extremely HIGH and LACKED SENSITIVITY. I felt Exploited to say the LEAST. read more

I was stuck in Clyde because my transmission would not shift out of gear. I was able to drive to Domestic Auto. They said I would have to wait for a part to fix the problem. First told me 2days then 5days. 2 weeks later when they finally got the part, I was informed they could not repair the problem and I should take it to a Transmission Shop.I rented a car for 2 weeks in trusting they would resolve the issue. They also charged me almost $300.00 for Fluid change and Diagnosis and no repair on vehicle. By Far the worst experience I have had with a repair shop in 30yrs. read more
