Tried to redeem $3 coupon online. Couldn't get to specials. Went in and manager was less than helpful then got belligerent. Won't go back.

DR McKays - "Boneless wings" more like "boneless bits"

I have been slow to come around to this place. The lady has always liked the place more than me,…read moreever since we first ventured in to try their wings shortly after they opened years ago. They've always had good wings with creative sauces but at the time the beer selection was pretty lame, the decor and wait staff not particularly impressive and nothing we tried food-wise besides the wings impressed us. Cut to the visits I've made since PopUp lost their (3rd party) liquor license 6-8 weeks ago. It drove me back and I e since found the beer selection has improved immensely, the hired help seems a bit friendlier and the summer special chicken salad sammich (all by itself) is my new obsession! How times have changed. Not sure if joining UnTapped had anything to do with it, but they now have 16 taps - mostly craft beer always incl a cider and Guinness. They have a plethora of sports, etc. on a plethora of TVs, darts and gaming, an expansive food menu. And while the wings still rock, it's the chicken salad on warm cibatta bread is one of the best true sandwiches, and best deals at $8 with homemade potato chips, in town. Eyes opened.

Yesterday, I went there with a few friends for dinner, drinks, and a friendly game of euchre with no money wagered. The waitress was friendly and polite and joked about our card game. When the manager saw us playing euchre, however, she screamed at us from across the bar that euchre was "illegal" and not allowed. She demanded that we stop immediately and made clear that we were not welcome at the establishment. Playing a friendly, non-cash game of cards is not illegal, and the manager said she also would have kicked us out for playing Uno. As a private business, McKay's is free to enforce whatever rules it wants. However, in addition to being forced to leave, the way the manager handled the situation was unnecessarily aggressive and belittling. She could have quietly come to our table and explained the policy, but instead chose to yell at us from across the bar. There are plenty of great businesses in Blo-No worth supporting that do not treat their patrons this way. I will take my future business elsewhere and encourage anyone reading this to do the same.

Lucky for me, I was able to get a seat at the bar. My adult beverage was a draft Flight by Yuengling. For lunch, I went with a Pork Tenderloin Sandwich with a side of Fries. The tenderloin was crisp and had good flavor. However, it had a perfect shape, so I could tell it came from a bag and was not done in house. I enjoyed the thin crisp fries. A roll of Paper Towels served as your napkin. Typically I prefer linen, but for a dive bar, paper towels do the trick. I also liked that the Wooden Duck has hooks under the bar. Hooks provide a safe place for purses and jackets. I got a giggle when I used the mens room and the owner showed his political views by having a caricature of the governor in the urinal. They even had a witty disclaimer, so you shouldn't be offended. I got a second giggle when I looked around the bar and realized, about 60% of the guest were an alternative lifestyle. So everyone is welcome at the Wooden Duck.

So we drove the 20…read moremiles to the thriving metropolis of Carlinville (not really, charming for sure, but just big enough to have cheap plaza office space for a state govt. office). So of course although my wife had done extensive research on all the documentation we would need to pay a state to drive our car...we had missed one. So we went to the Wood Duck for lunch while we waited for our credit union to send us a lien release form. We had talked to the kind soul at the DMV and she was "all-in" on this place. She was so right. It is an intimate space, with a small bar out front, and then a few more tables in a back area. We took a booth right in front of the kitchen. It is a very "locals" place. There were some police having lunch (likely the entire force, at least by weight)...and one of them stared me down as if he had never seen a veteran, former DoD executive, in a collared shirt, and khakis in a public restaurant before. [Yes I was the only pepper in the salt]. The actual restaurant staff was excellent, and welcoming. Our server was a whirlwind of effecient hospitality. I got a pork tenderloin sandwich (and later the same day was invited to join a pork tenderloin sandwich group on FB)... ordered the fries, not clear if that came with them, didn't keep the reciept. My wife got a cheesburger that she was very happy with. My tenderloin was crispy, juicy and a bit too salty in a good way. This place is a definite keeper on the list of places we will be willing to travel to over time. Perhaps if I come back often enough, Barney will get used to "others" visiting his little fiefdom.

I ordered online and picked up my order to-go. The good news is the wings were ready quickly and also super crispy which is always pleasant and what you want out of a wing. The slightly bad news is the wings are *very* lightly sauced. There was an option to pay an extra 0.50 for extra sauce, but I decided to see what their baseline was since it was my first time ordering. In the future, if you like a sauced wing at all, I would pay the extra. I got the buffalo (one flame symbol) and the Nashville Hot (three flame symbols) which I felt was accurate. The buffalo was not really hot at all, just the buffalo-flavored sauce and the Nashville Hot was warm enough to leave your lips a little tingly, but not so hot that you couldn't enjoy the flavor. My interaction with the staff was brief but pleasant. I would love to come back and try their loaded fries which look delicious, but didn't trust I could get them home before they got cold and soggy. So next time I'm there for dine-in, I'll give those a try. If you're a wing snob, it's worth a visit!
