Had a delightful weekday lunch here on a recent road trip. I went with the pork tenderloin "shoe." If you aren't familiar with the "shoe" it's a mid Illinois thing with Texas toast, topped with your choice of protein, fries, and your choice of sausage gravy or cheese sauce. Each element of the plate was great, good tenderloin, lightly battered, crispy fries, and outstanding cheese sauce. They were very busy with the local crowd, including a couple of tables of card players. Just one employee and a cook holding down the fort, but they managed well. Enjoyed lunch here today. I had read local reviews so we gave it a shot, only 30 minutes or so from our house. The service was efficient, polite, a single woman running the front and one cook. Our food came out pretty fast. It wasn't that busy when we first got there right at noon, but the numbers grew as we wrapped up. I got a pork tenderloin sandwich w/ fries and my wife got a shrimp basket. The meals were good, and a pleasant lunch. We will certainly come back and try some other things. The fries and my BPT were a bit overcooked for my personal taste but certainly not burned or inedible. The place itself is quite nice, a big old building with lots of old wood and brick. Made a pit stop in Mt. Olive for fuel and a bite to eat and Tilley's Tavern sounded good. It is located on the main drag in an older building on a corner. I arrived before the usual supper time... around 3:45PM. There were a few customer there already enjoying a late lunch or early supper. They had a decent selection of can/bottle beer so I ordered a Voodoo Ranger and the bourbon burger with seasoned fries. I sat at the bar and there was sports in TV. It's an older space with a big bar and typical small town decor, including an old school tin ceiling. The server at the bar was extremely friendly and responsive. Food came out quickly and was prepared and delicious. The bourbon burger included, caramelized onions, bacon, cheddar cheese with bourbon glaze on a pretzel bun. I've heard a lot of great things about this smalltown place which is on Main Street in Mount Olive. It's a bar and grill or tavern, as one would expect in a little village as most (if not all) towns in southern Illinois have one. Everyone seemingly raves about the food and atmosphere here, so I had to check it out. The service was very slow, and it took the server 10 minutes to finally seat me. There were only two servers but the place was not busy. She later apologized, got my drink order and then my food which also took quite awhile. I got the beef horseshoe. It wasn't a large or small serving, but just right. The fries were very crispy, which I liked. The cheese? I wasn't sure how to put it. It didn't taste like queso, spicy or average cheese, but more sweet or something like it. Let's just say, it was different. But I had a full belly upon leaving. One of my friends from Mt. Went here based on local reviews for a quick eat and, well, you get what you get downstate. Overpriced, bland, fried, and a disgusting atmosphere. When the staff isn't on their phones they'll stare at you as it seems they can only communicate in emoji. Overpriced national beers - pretty sad considering the popularity of breweries in Illinois - and that gross yellow plasti-cheese on everything. I say skip the waste of time and just get a drive-thru burger. It'll be more hygienic and your money won't go to waste of space kids who ruined a place. read more

This was definitely a hidden gem. A fantastically simple burger that was almost perfect. A group of wings that were a nice, vinegar base like a buffalo but with added red pepper flakes (Puffalo sauce). The Buffalo was just the right amount of Buffalo and the Asian was very Asian. Just the right amount of sauce to wing ratio. We are giving Tilley's an extra star simply for existing. Mt. Olive does not have a lot to offer and it was a real surprise to find Tilley's here. The first thing we noticed when we walked in was that is seems bigger on the inside than on the outside. The extra dining room and game room was unexpected. We happened to hit it on Monday (wing night) and the place was romping. Sitting at the bar we had a good view of the operation and had an opportunity to engage with the staff as well as other patrons. The universal advice was...get the wings. Tilley's was doing a great take out business while we were there. A steady stream of locals where hauling out large white plastic bags of styrofoam boxes with wings and extra sauce. Not wanting to look out of place we ordered the wings. And quietly ordered a salad and fried ravioli just to explore the menu. There are several choices of wing sauce. Following the bartenders suggestion I ordered a spicy sweet sauce. She warned me it was quite hot. When I received the wings I realized I had forgotten I was in the mid-west and their idea of spicy hot is different from much of the rest of the country. I've had spicier oatmeal than this. The fried raviolis were average at best. There were a lot of them in the basket which was nice but then I shouldn't expect much more than frozen and fried in Mt. Olive. The salad was iconic mid-west. Head lettuce with grated cheese. We ate it because it was green. Tilley's is a fun place to hang out and have a beer and we felt the place was very affordable. If you are looking for quality food then Mt. Olive may not be your best option. But Tilley's is your best option in Mt. Olive. read more

For third round (still no food) went to bar, took the empties and was told by the B--CH of waitress she would bring them. Sat back down and waited another 10-15 min for drinks. The burgers certainly lived up to the hype! I saw the sign by the interstate- "best burgers around"...so naturally I had to give them a try. I had the jalapeño burger, which was big, juicy, and delicious, with an icy, perfectly carbonated Mountain Dew to wash it down. The burger was fantastic and the ingredients were fresh, crisp, and savory. About the worst service I've ever gotten. Was there with my mom and sister. Guess the waitress only wants to wait on men. Her loss, I've waitressed and tip very well. Had to go to the bar to get the second round of drinks. Went for the 3rd round and she said she's bring them out. After another 5 minutes walked back to the bar and she's on her cell phone. Food was good. We had a big variety that we split amongst us. The burgers are great. Seasoned fries are better over regular fries. Our one big complaint is the bar staff was not friendly when we came in to pick up our Togo order. They we were not busy, it took her about 5 minutes to finally acknowledge us and she seemed bothered she had to do that. When we paid and left she couldn't even say to have a nice day.
